"Take someone with you and be careful,"

Duskpaw replayed what her mother had said as she stood under one of the many tree in TreeClan nearly drowned. Beside her was her denmate and fellow apprentice Stonepaw. The goal was to go hunting for something fresher before the storm really hit but luck wasn't on their side. Just as the pair of them reached a decent hunting ground the storm rolled in and started to pound the earth, scaring away all possible prey.

It was Duskpaw who insisted they stay out longer but she regretted that considering they were both now stuck under what little protection the tall tree provided. Duskpaw looked around and saw a hollow log a few tail lengths away, but wasn't quite sure if it was forth it. The current situation was just a heavy rainfall that made her pelt lay flat and feel thick.

"I'm sorry I made you come out here," Duskpaw finally manged to say, trying not to shiver when a rush of cold wind licked at her fur. Normally the orange and white tabby would bring her brother, but Dunepaw's earlier bout with greencough always made her nervous about making him do anything in the cold and rain. Few apprentices seemed willing to even hear her out, most were content with being in their dens nice and warm. Duskpaw was just persistent and maybe quite annoying in her attempts to convince Stonepaw to join her. She wouldn't be surprise if he was angry with her, but that was a concern for a different day, right now her main focus was finding a better place to wait out the storm.

STONEPAW

NINE MOONS. TOM. APPRENTICE. TREECLAN.

The rain pounded down around them, soaking them in a matter of moments. Stonepaw huddled close to the ground, the water in his fur weighing him down and making him feel heavy. Looking up through the trees, he could make out the sky above them. The rain had only just started, but by the look of the dark, angry clouds, hanging so low it looked like you could touch them if you climbed high enough, it wasn't going to end any time soon.

Stonepaw stifled a sigh, looking at Duskpaw when she spoke. "I'm sorry I made you come out here." He offered the orange and white she-cat a smile when he responded, "It's alright. It's as much my fault as it is yours; I could have said no." He hoped his smile would be enough to assure her he harbored no hard feelings, but it was hard to tell.

He looked around, catching sight of the hollow log Duskpaw had seen before she spoke. He looked at her again and nodded toward the log. "I think we should make a break for it. We're already soaked through, and these trees aren't doing much for us." He looked between her and the log, before creeping closer to it. There was a gap in the forest canopy between where they stood and where the log was, and the rain fell like a curtain. The tree they stood under offered a decent amount of shelter, but the rain was coming down too hard for the tree to block all of it. At least the log had a solid roof.

He glanced back to Duskpaw, shooting her another smile before fixing his eyes back to his destination. Taking a deep breath, he pushed forward with his hind paws, sprinting across to the log. As soon as he left the relatice cover of the tree, the rain drenched him anew, and the drops fell so hard it almost hurt. His journey to the log was mercifully short, however, and he was soon shaking himself off and crawling further inside.

Scoping out the inside of the log, it seemed there was adequate room for them to fit in comfortably together, and the bottom of the log was patched with a bit of moss, making it fairly comfortable. All in all, a perfect shelter to ride out the storm. He turned around, walking back toward the opening, waiting for Duskpaw to join him. He offered her an encouraging smile. "Come on! It's actually pretty cozy in here!"

There was a little bit of hope that their relationship wasn't soured by such a reckless adventure. Duskpaw had a little difficulty making friends outside of her brother. It wasn't that she didn't love Dunepaw with all her heart but more like she knew everything about him already. She wanted the challenge of making a new friend for the sake of learning about someone. Stonepaw was her first challenge and it was a comfort to know their wet paws weren't heading in the wrong direction.

Hearing what he had to say in reference to the log, hear ears twitched with the sound of rain. He had a good point, the only thing holding her back would be not knowing if the log was wet inside. Mud was quickly forming around them and could easily ruin their possible sanctuary. But it was somewhere covered and suited them better than the leaves above.

Moving to a crouch, the she-cat prepared herself to dart out after Stonepaw, following in his muddy paw steps.

He was quick and appeared to make it safely. Evening going as far as to call out that it was actually a decent place. Bundling up some tension in her hind-legs to better propel her forward. She didn't get a chance to gather much before a wild crack of thunder startled her and forced the she-cat to bolt forward.

Claws outstretched to provide her some sense of traction, Duskpaw dove right into the holllow log without pausing to let Stonepaw make room. She stumbled for a bit, ears flattened down before she realized that Stonepaw was right. Further into the log the sound of rain and wild thunder wasn't softened. Even the air around them was gradually warming up considering two apprentices took up space.

"I guess we can wait here until it slows down or a patrol finds up, but personally I rather face the storm than my mother," She meowed aloud, a poor attempt at a joke. Lionsong was a wonderful mother but also a strict mother, not afraid to tell her daughter how to fix her mistakes.

"So...what now?" She asked an awkward attempt to spark conversation.

It looked like Duskpaw was about to start running toward him, but a crack of thunder sent him to the ground, ears pinned back in a small display of fear. Seconds later, Duskpaw was crashing into him, nearly trampling him as she made her mad dash into the log. Apparently the thunderclap had scared her, too. He watched as she stumbled a bit before catching her balance. Stonepaw pulled himself from the ground, following her further into the log.

“I guess we can wait here until it slows down or a patrol finds up, but personally I rather face the storm than my mother.” Stonepaw couldn’t resist a small smile at Duskpaw’s words. His own parents would likely give him a stern talking to, and he grimaced at the thought of his parents’ faces when he returned home. “Yeah, I know the feeling.” He chuckled softly, attempting to soften his words.

“So...what now?” Stonepaw turned to see Duskpaw looking to him questioningly. After a brief moment’s hesitation, he shrugged. “I guess we have to just wait it out.” He stepped over to a patch of moss before settling himself down onto his belly, lying with his head facing the open end of the log. As he watched the rain splash down, his mind wandered. How would they fill their time and the silence between them?

A small beetle caught his eye, and he smiled. “Hey, Duskpaw, wanna play ‘I Spy’? I can go first.” It was a game he and his siblings had played frequently when they were kits, and he hadn’t played it in ages. Since they had time to kill, he figured it might be a good way as any to pass the time.

He glanced around, pretending he hadn’t already spotted his object. “I spy...something small and black, and slightly shiny.” He purposely avoided glancing at the beetle foraging not far away from them, instead pretending to inspect the roof of their little hideaway, hoping to give her a bit of a challenge.

Her ears rotated to listen to what Stonepaw had to say. He was right. The only hope they had of getting home without injury was waiting for a patrol. She added Stonepaw's mother to the prayer she sent to StarClan, a prayer asking for a patrol to find them but to exclude those cats in the party. In the dimness of the log, she smiled when she realized that she wasn't the only one that dreaded their mother. It wasn't out of fear but just knowing that Lionsong would be upset she was almost hurt.

waiting.

It was probably the worst part of being young. She waited to be aloud to be out of the nursery. Waited some more to be allowed to be an apprentice and now currently waiting to go home. Waiting was quickly becoming the worst thing in the world.

Her followed suit and laid down with her paws facing forward and her head promptly dropped on top. Her bronze eyes watching outside of their shelter. She blinked a few times before letting her eyes close and letting her ears focus on the sounds around her.

It wasn't until Stonepaw spoke again did she open her eyes and look up.

I spy? That's a game for kits. She was half tempted to remind him of that. But considering the log reminded her of the nursery and was a temporary home, she agreed with a nod.

Hearing his clue she looked around her for anything that was small, black and shiny. Her mental image of the object was a pebble or the eyes of a bird, but none of those things were lurking in their shelter.

Paying attention to what was around her, Duskpaw's eyes narrowed in on a small moving thing their the edge of the log. A beetle by the looks of it and at first she was intrigued by it's presence before realizing that it had to be it!

"Is it that little beetle?" She asked and smiled. Confident she was correct, Duskpaw carried on with their game.

I spy..something wet and slimy" She gave the clue and smirked, mostly to herself. Convince he wouldn't guess that it was the mass lingering at the entrance of their shelter.
