Finally Lionstar had called the for every cat’s attention, going over the hunting competition rules before sending the medicine cats off with the groups of younger apprentices, into their own territories. She watched Featherpaw lead the NightClan apprentices away and flicked her tail. Personally she would have allowed what the others called ‘cheating’, but once again she’d been outnumbered. If you didn’t hide your prey well enough, if one was intelligent enough to go searching for it and making their own life easier, who cared? It was simply a different tactic, not entirely one that should be frowned upon. All the prey would come back to the Clan at the end of the day regardless of who caught it. Her ears twitched in annoyance as Lionstar’s voice sounded again, announcing the start of the battle competition. She turned to look for Juncopaw, whose name would shortly be called, and as he stepped forward her pale amber gaze fell upon his opponent. A LightningClan she-cat.

She glanced briefly at Redstar, briefly feeling the urge to comment on the matchup, but holding her tongue lest she say something rude. It was not worth jeopardizing their easy truce with the other Clan and she knew she wasn’t entirely tactful when it came to interacting with those outside of NightClan, because frankly she generally didn’t really care how such interactions ended. She settled for a nod toward the other she-cat that could be taken as a silent ‘good luck to you and yours’. Yes, that would do. Let the apprentices’ fight speak for itself. She turned back to watch the first match as Juncopaw made the first move.

Ouch. Russethawk likely wasn't the only cat who'd winced upon seeing Juncopaw smack his jaw off the ground, the LightningClan apprentice having successfully tangled up his legs and sent him careening ungracefully into the soil. That would sting in the morning, but what would sting worse was knowing he'd allowed that to happen in front of every Clan in the forest. Suddenly, Russethawk was not quite so envious of the current generation and their games; he did little to suppress a grin, watching the smokey-hued tom get back up onto his paws and try again. That was the spirit.

After the border skirmish that had taken Sandstar's life in such an unnecessary, absurd way, one would think that Russethawk harbored some ill will towards NightClan - and believe you me, he did, but it had nothing to do with the apprentice he saw fighting. Any resentment he felt had no place here in this peaceful gathering, nor would he ever direct it towards a cat who hadn't been there in the first place and was so much younger than himself.

He was not certain if Razorstar felt the same, though. Emerald gaze seeking out the familiar, distinctive face of his mentor and friend, he watched the sharp-toothed feline where he stood with the other leaders, Razorstar's gaze seeming to be on the fight. Perhaps if Razorstar had still been Razorfang, he would have openly expressed his dislike of NightClan in a way that didn't involve unsheathed claws but still got the message across with a few well-placed looks. Russethawk chuckled. He could always trust that tom to have a way with icy, menacing glances. He'd given him quite a few in their early training days together.
