song @lacihpargfalling so hard, so fast this time
A flame in the snow, it was nearly impossible for the she-cat to hunt on the ground. It was fortunate, then, that she was familiar with the trees. A flash of orange through the tightly-knit bare branches was the only sign of the feline predator as she scented and searched. Her paws moved with a speed and confidence true to only TreeClan cats as she crossed the territory without ever setting paw on the ground.
In the dead of leaf-bare, prey was hard to come by, even in the areas usually most rich in prey. Still, the Clan needed prey, and every spare effort was spent attempting to find food. Thus, the lean ginger she-cat hovered above the edge of the wildflower clearing, senses alert. Perched on her branch, Emberstorm waited. And waited. And waited.
And then finally, movement. Her ears perked forward at the sound of a rustled leaf, and her green eyes searched for the movement she caught a moment later. A mouse, poking around for whatever meager offerings it could find. For a moment, she almost felt bad for the creature, knowing his struggle was her own. But then the empty twist in her stomach pulled those feelings away.
Taking a moment to readjust her position, Emberstorm took a deep breath before stepping off the branch. Like a stream of orange water, she flowed to the ground, paws landing squarely on the mouse. With a quick bite, she ended its struggle, sending up a silent thanks to StarClan.

t h o r n s t r i k e warrior, treeclan Thornstrike padded through the woods silently, sticking close to shrubs and foliage to stay camouflaged in snow. Cool, crisp air crossed his nostrils as he searched for the familiar scents of prey. Hunger gnawed at his belly, its rumblings only increasing when the warm smell of mouse drifted his way. He pushed the irritation aside and stalked the scent, staying downwind. Finally finding his target, he went to strike, but the mouse spotted his dark coat against the bright snow and scurried away. He spat in disgust. Leaf-bare was never his favorite time of year. He was older than last season, so perhaps his nest in the den might be warmer, but leaf-bare was a time of cold, hunger, and loneliness. He continued searching on the ground, but finally gave up hope of finding food from below. He climbed the nearest tree. Reaching the solid branches, Thornstrike was almost breathless. Blood pounding in his ears, he felt some spark of warmth in his body and relished the heat while it lasted. Once again, he took up the hunt, but was distracted when a flash of red entered his vision. Emberstorm, he thought, needing no confirmation. His former apprentice leaped from the air gracefully and landed on a mouse before it even knew what hit it. "That was impressive, Emberstorm," he finally mewed, making himself more visible by resting on the branch she had previously occupied. Her scent lingered in the air and he breathed deeply before realizing what he was doing. "Who taught you how to hunt like that?"

falling so hard, so fast this time
'That was impressive, Emberstorm.'
With the mouse dangling from her mouth, she tilted her head upward. Her green gaze snagged onto the mottled brown form of her former mentor, lounging on the branch she'd vacated. The sight of him there, relaxing and smiling at her, set a pawful of butterflies fluttering in her belly. For a moment, it was just the two of them, and everything around them faded.
'Who taught you how to hunt like that?' Emberstorm dropped the mouse between her paws, lifting her head again to fix the older warrior with a playful smile. "You know, I actually can't remember... might've been my father.. You know him, don't you? Flamedance? I think it was him..." She lowered herself to a sitting position, her tail twisting behind her in thought.
Her gaze dropped lower, a picture of innocent concentration. "Actually, I think there was someone else, too.. Torn, Thorn.. flight, fight, strike.. OH!" Her tail shot up and her ears and head perked up. She looked up at the cat above her like an excited kit. "I remember! Thornstrike! His name was Thornstrike! Do you know him? I remember his name, now, but I'm not really sure I could pinpoint his face in a crowd. Maybe, if you know him, you could help me recognize him?"
Emberstorm felt she was doing a fine job of portraying the innocent and naive cat she was channelling, but beneath her facade was an undercurrent of thrilling excitement. Playful banter wasn't unusual for them, but somehow, this felt different. They were older now, and though they were still the same, something had changed. She wasn't sure what it was, or if she was imagining it. All she knew was that it was new, it was different, it was exciting, and she wanted more of that feeling. She didn't know what it meant, but she was eager to find out.

t h o r n s t r i k e warrior, treeclan The older tom chuckled at the way she chose to respond. Emberstorm certainly had a fast wit -- and no, he told himself, that was no different than liking any other cat's wit. Even though the butterflies danced in his own stomach. "Thornstrike..." he mused, tail flicking as if he was deep in thought. "I'm not too sure I remember him." He jumped down from the branch lightly, back arching through the air as his dark coat stood out against the cool snow underpaw. "Do you think you could describe him to me?"He circled back around to Emberstorm's other side, aware just how bold he was being. At this point, he wasn't sure he cared. The fiery apprentice he had trained had become like spark in his life. She learned quickly, pushed herself far, and had proven herself a strong warrior times over. He still remembered that she had chosen to trust him with the suspicious nature of her brother's death, and that had nearly toppled him over the edge into a world of emotions he wasn't ready for. All in all, Emberstorm held a spot in his heart that had a lot more value than he cared to admit. Thornstrike felt something, but he wasn't quite sure if he had the bravery to give the wave of emotions that hit him a name. They slept in adjacent nests every night. They often patrolled together. He poured his life into this she-cat, beginning with her young, six moon old self and now, the twenty-three moon old warrior was still in his thoughts daily. He looked at her closely now, admiring the shape of muscles under her coat and just how cleanly she had killed the mouse. His eyes still looked at her as a mentor fixing an apprentice's form, but there simply wasn't anything to adjust. Emberstorm was, in all sense of the word, perfect. He just couldn't wait to tell her. 'Thornstrike...I'm not too sure I remember him."
Emberstorm watched as her former mentor left the branch. Watching the way his body moved as he landed, a shiver went down her spine, and it wasn't from the cold. 'Do you think you could describe him to me?'
He circled around her, so close, and her breath caught in her throat. "I-I told you, I don't remember what he looked like." Stumbling on the first word as her breath caught up with her, she looked at him with the wide, innocent eyes of the character she was playing. She thought of trying to describe Thornstrike's character, but she didn't know if she could.
Emberstorm's heart rate had increased, and continued to do so, as Thornstrike's scent washed over her. It was getting harder and harder to think and focus, between the butterflies and his closeness and his scent...
She needed to get away, before she lost herself completely. In her last moments of clarity, she decided to change the situation completely. Her innocent eyes narrowed in mischief. In a quick motion, she drew her paw up and prodded the tom with it before leaping away. As she bounced off, she cried over her shoulder.
"Tag, you're it!"

t h o r n s t r i k e warrior, treeclan A stutter? Was that a stutter, or was he just imagining things? Thornstrike never knew Emberstorm to be at a loss for words. Quick-witted even as an apprentice, she had always impressed him with sharp retorts and deadpans that he couldn't quite decipher. Not this uncertain she-cat he felt beside him. He felt a tension in the air, almost like the same feeling before a lightning storm. Something crackled between them, bringing a heat to the air around them. He heard Emberstorm's breath hitch and felt his own heartbeat rapidly increase. Whatever was in the air, it surely had an effect on them now-- "Tag, you're it!"Wait, what? Did she really just...? Thornstrike purred his amusement to unhearing ears and bounded after his prey, grinning and feeling like a kit again. "Are we really playing tag right now?" he called up ahead. He shook his head and followed the scent of the one he had come to cherish, knowing it would eventually lead him to his prey.

Two bounds away from him, her head started to clear. She could think and she could breathe. Her first instinct was to think back on what happened, try to figure out the feelings that had almost overwhelmed her -- but she shoved all of that aside. She didn't want to think about what had happened, didn't want to think about how close he had been, the butterflies in her stomach, the tension that wasn't all bad, his scent...
Tripping over a tree root brought her back to earth. She stumbled, catching her balance with a few extra steps. 'Are we really playing tag right now?' Though his voice was faint, she could hear the smile in his words. Rather than responding, she pressed on, now completely focused.
Gentle bounds turned into a flat run. Her task? Get as much distance between them as she could. Emberstorm raced through the forest, a wild smile on her face. The chill in the air was gone, butterflies forgotten, as heat filled her veins. The burn in her muscles and the wind in her fur made her feel lighter than air. She almost laughed aloud, but stopped herself as she remembered what she was supposed to be doing.
Suddenly, she veered off to the side, changing direction in a flurry of snow dust. Her pace remained the same for a few fox-lengths, before she slowed. She still bounded forward, though not as fast, paying attention to her surroundings. She needed a place to hide.
A shadow near the ground caught her eye, and she stopped. Just beneath one of the bushes lay the opening of an old rabbit hole. With a devious smile, she glanced behind her. Confident the coast was clear, she crouched down and slipped into the darkness.

t h o r n s t r i k e warrior, treeclan Hearing no response, Thornstrike picked up his pace as they raced through TreeClan territory. He couldn't help but remember when he tested her tracking skills, putting her to the test. Thornstrike and Nightmaple had decided to train Emberpaw and Sprucepaw in tracking. Emberpaw went first, and she had to find her mentor somewhere in the territory. The other pair held her in a location as Thornstrike made his way through the trees, leaping from ground to bush to tree, branch to branch, down to a stream he followed upriver for a ways, and back to the trees. He varied his path, doubling back on his own trail sometimes or making it a high and low scent trail. Eventually, he parked himself at the base of a tree, his mottled pelt hidden among the roots as he stirred up mud to cover his scent. Nightmaple and Sprucepaw were to follow his own apprentice, Nightmaple keeping an eye on Emberpaw's tracking and Sprucepaw to observe for when it was his turn. Emberpaw had found him and decided to announce her success by sneaking up behind him and jabbing him with a paw as she yowled "boo!" Needless to say, it startled his out of his little hole and he scurried out, covering up his embarrassment with a reprimand to treat him like prey. "Jabbing your prey with a paw and yowling 'boo!' to StarClan won't catch us any mice or allow us to track invaders. You were supposed to take this seriously." The fiery she-cat had just shaken off the complaint with a self-satisfied air, and Thornstrike had discussed with her later the tactics he used and how she countered them. He had to admit, she was pretty good. Now, he regretted sharing his evasion tactics with her. He sniffed the air carefully, but found no scent of her. Thankfully, the fluffy snow under their paws gave him more than enough to work with. He leaped to the trees and followed the path of disturbed snow, trusting it was upturned by a flame leaping through the forest. She ran hard and fast, he noticed, seeing the distance between her paws as she ran. He admired her even when he couldn't see her, from the long strides she took and the clear speed at which she ran. A snow drift alerted him to a change in direction, and he quick his haphazard leaping to carefully study the pawprints Emberstorm left behind. Finally, they stopped in front of a dark hollow under a bush. Thornstrike grinned, knowing exactly how he would announce his own success. Leaping from the trees with a mighty push, he landed directly in front of the entrance to the rabbit hole. stretching a paw in until he felt fur, he mewed one word. "Boo."[Oooooh my gosh I had so much fun writing that There's the details of the hide-and-seek game. Go make up her side of the story!]

falling so hard, so fast this time
He sure was taking his time. Emberstorm knew now how her mentor felt, oh so long ago. The game they played now mimicked a training exercise in her apprenticeship. She had sat impatiently with Nightmaple and Sprucepaw as Thornstrike ran off to hide on the other end of the territory. His trail had led her up in the trees and down on the ground, round and round and round. Through all his tactics and tricks, he had taught her well, and only tripped her up at the stream. She had searched high and low, up and down, before finally catching his trail somewhere upstream. After that, it was smooth sailing, and she smiled as she remembered how she had found him. A quick paw against his back and a loud 'BOO!' had scared him from his hiding spot. She could barely remember what he had said to her, caught in the rush of pride that she had both succeeded AND scared a warrior.
In the quiet of her little den, she basked in the happy memory. She listened for signs of her mentor, but everything was still. Between the quiet of the forest and the warmth of her den, it was becoming ever more difficult to stay focused. Emberstorm stirred, settling herself more comfortably, sensing that her wait wasn't going to be short. Before long, her nose dropped to the ground and her eyes closed.
...
Something brushed the short fur atop her head and it shot up, banging on the roof of her little hideout. A soft 'boo' reached her ears, and she smiled.
"You found me!" Still in hiding, her voice was happy and bright. For a moment, she toyed with the idea of making him come into the cramped space to get her, but thought better of it, realising that there wouldn't be enough space for him to back out. Stuck in a rabbit hole.. It might be pretty funny, but who knows when someone might come around to pull him out by his tail? Emberstorm giggled at the thought.
"Ready or not, here I come!" With a bright smile on her face, she wiggled her way forward. Darkness and warmth gave way to light and a slight chill, and she found herself nose to nose with Thornstrike. "Boo."

t h o r n s t r i k e warrior, treeclan Thornstrike exhaled sharply as his paw was smashed between head and roof. He drew it out and licked it quickly, hoping to remove the sting from his nerves before Emberstorm emerged. "You found me!"He heard the smile in her voice, and suddenly she was there, nose-to-nose with him. He had no air of his own; they shared it. He had no space of his own; they shared it. Everything around them melded together until he felt her. His breathing slowly adjusted to hers. In and out, they created a cloud of hot breath together. Their heartbeats aligned. He couldn't just hear the blood pumping through her veins, he felt it. He couldn't deny what he was feeling any longer. He just hoped, with all of his heart, that she felt it back. Nose-to-nose, so close he would remember it forever, Thornstrike finally broke the silence between them with a simple statement that captured the feelings on his heart and laid them out on the ground before him, plain for all to see. For her to see. "Emberstorm..." He paused as he felt the gentle snowflakes fall around him. It was perfect. Flakes dotted her body in a sharp contrast to the fire he found so alluring. "I will always find you."

falling so hard, so fast this time
His breath was hers, his space was hers. Through the physical connection between their noses, she chould feel his heartbeat echo hers. She had never been so close to anyone before, never like this. His gold eyes held her green ones with such a fire, such an intensity, that she had never seen before in him. Her breath abandoned her, left her there, with only him supporting her.
'Emberstorm.. I will always find you.'
Snow fell gently around them. There he stood, stripped bare, for her to see. It was beautiful. He was beautiful.
Suddenly, she was overwhelmed. She wanted to get close to him, as close as possible. Wanted the world around them, the distance between them, to fade. To be so close that there was nothing between them, nothing to separate one from the other. But she couldn't move. She was trapped, pinned in place by his eyes. She couldn't move, couldn't breathe, couldn't think. All she could do was feel.
There was an emotion she couldn't identify that filled her to the brim, so strong and so intense that she could cry. Her heart raced so hard it could leap out of her chest at any moment, her head spun, and her breath still escaped her. She felt like she was flying, like she was falling, like she was drowning, like she was burning. For a moment, she didn't know up from down, or whether her own paws were still on the ground. She felt like she was going to burst.
Her eyes focused again, and there was a storm of emotion brewing. There was a moment of clarity in her upside-down world, and she clung to it.
"You can't.." Her voice caught and she swallowed hard. "You can't find me.. If I never leave you.."

t h o r n s t r i k e warrior, treeclan He watched her carefully now, waiting for her to process what he said. Thornstrike didn't know what to expect from this warrior in front of him. Whether she would reject his advances and run away or come to him with love in her eyes, he didn't know. All he knew was that he had done his part, and it was her move. "You can't.." He heard her voice catch and he waited, holding his own breath. "You can't find me.. If I never leave you.."His breath came out in one swoosh and he rubbed his head against her own, breaking the space between them. Emberstorm was now his, and he would not let her go. His heart overflowed, and he had never felt this way before. He felt complete now, like a hole in his heart had been filled. "Emberstorm..." Thornstrike trailed off, unable to put into words what he wanted to say. He pulled back from her cheek, seeking her eyes to know that the emotion her words displayed was actually a real feeling. "Are you sure this is what you want?" Are you sure I am what you want?

falling so hard, so fast this time
She hovered there, vulnerable, stripped bare. There was a moment of fear as the last words left her mouth. What if she was wrong? What if she had misinterpreted, stepped out of line, what if..
Thornstrike exhaled heavily, and suddenly his face was against hers, and everything melted. Her green eyes closed as she returned his gesture, rubbing her cheek against his.
And then he was gone, and her name was in the air again. Her vibrant green eyes opened, catching up in his. 'Are you sure this is what you want?' She stared up at him, his words not making sense at first. Her lower jaw dropped slightly, her mouth parting. For a moment, there was nothing; her mind couldn't figure out what to say.
"I.." She swallowed hard, breaking eye contact. Why was it so hard to think with him so close? Why did he have to.. make her.. melt. Her gaze had drifted back to his, and she didn't know how she remained standing.
"I.. Thornstrike.." She couldn't find the words. How could she ever? Was there really a way she could explain the rush of feelings coursing through her? The butterflies that started every time their eyes met? The way she melted in his presence? The way she was rendered useless when he got too close?
"Thornstrike, I.. you.." She inhaled sharply. How was she supposed to do this? Her gaze lowered to their paws, earth and fire on a bed of white; she couldn't look at him anymore. "I can't think. I can't breathe. I can't move. I can't.. do anything.." She shook her head as though shaking off a fly. Her face darkened in concentration, forcing the words to her tongue. "One moment, I'm fine. The next, I'm soaring. And still the next, I'm melting into a puddle. Even now, I don't know whether I'm lying or standing. I get so confused, and everything gets muddled, and I don't know anything anymore." The words started to pour from her lips unbidden, and she paused, risking a glance up toward his face before dropping her eyes. "And it all gets harder the closer you get, and when you look at me, I get little flutters in my stomach, and you get closer and it all gets worse and worse until I don't even know who I am anymore and I don't know what it all means and then I get scared.."
Her voice trailed off as her last word dropped like a bomb, the sound of it echoing in her ears. Scared? She was Emberstorm, the flame in the forest, a firestorm, a whirlwind of power and confidence, and she was scared? Of something as simple as.. What is this, anyway? She didn't know.
She forced her gaze back to his, afraid of what she might see there. There was uncertainty and doubt in her own eyes, and she didn't want to see that reflected back at her. ".. I'm scared, Thornstrike." Her voice was barely above a whisper now, as though speaking the words aloud might cause the forest to fall. "I don't know what.. this.. is.. I've never felt like this before.. I don't want to lose you, our friendship, if this.. if this isn't what you expect it to be..." Her gaze fell from his again, and she shuffled her paws uncertainly.
She had been so certain, so sure of herself moments ago, and now faced with the enormity of the situation, she had crumbled, cowering like a kitten before an angry warrior. She was scared, so scared.. But would he be there to pick her up? Or would he, in her moment of weakness, see a cat he couldn't bear to know, and abandon her? No, she wasn't scared.. she was terrified.

t h o r n s t r i k e warrior, treeclan “I..”Wait for it. “I.. Thornstrike..”Wait for it. “Thornstrike, I.. you..”Her vibrant green eyes left his and he left something else leave, too. Thornstrike needed her. Their nests weren't close enough. He wanted to take her now and curl up in the warriors den and sleep, feeling her breath next to him and her heat next to him and know that they were them. Things just didn't work out the way he wanted, did they? "And it all gets harder the closer you get, and when you look at me, I get little flutters in my stomach, and you get closer and it all gets worse and worse until I don't even know who I am anymore and I don't know what it all means and then I get scared.."...what was she saying? That she didn't know what she wanted? That she didn't understand? Because Thornstrike knew. He wanted to to be the tom Emberstorm chose as her own. He wanted the fire of the forest, and not just to say he had gotten her. ".. I'm scared, Thornstrike. I don't know what.. this.. is.. I've never felt like this before.. I don't want to lose you, our friendship, if this.. if this isn't what you expect it to be..." He lifted her head with his paw, forcing the she-cat to look at him. “Listen to me,” he meowed in that appropriate “mentor” voice, hoping to impress on her the seriousness of what he was getting ready to explain. “I know what this is. This is love, Emberstorm, and it started when we touched noses in front of our Clanmates many moons ago.“At first it was a one-sided relationship of respect. I expected you to respect me, and that was that. I treated you as a pupil, and you shouldn't have expected any warmth from me.” He paused to take a breath, and found himself staring at the beauty before him. Continuing, he mewed, "and then, as I got to know you, I began to respect you back. I gave you more freedom, allowed you to do things the Emberpaw way, and I stopped caring about all the shenanigans you pulled on me. It became less of a work-based relationship and more of a team. You became a constant fixture in my life.“I didn't truly love you until your warrior ceremony. You were so strong, for your brother and the fact that you confided in me brought us past the mentor-apprentice and into the friends stage. I didn't truly realize what was happening until I found myself making a nest for you next to me.”Thornstrike trailed off, unable to find words expressing the emotions running through his brain. Emberstorm was perfect. The fire of the forest was the clever, smart, loyal, fierce, and independent. Best of all, she wasn't a she-cat who wanted to lay in the nursery all day. She was fire itself, and that’s what he loved most – her spirit, her spark... “I love you,” he finally mewed, stripping himself even barer than before. “I don’t want you to change who you are for me. I want you to keep being Emberstorm. You’re not going to lose me. I will always be your friend. If you don’t want us to be more than that, okay, but I want more than that. I want you by my side for the rest of my moons. I will carry you when you need to be carried. I will share your fears, your heartache, and your success.” He looked at her sharply, nose-to-nose with her again. Right there, right in front of her, he commanded her to hear him, to understand him, and to know that he would go to the ends of the earth if she told him to. “Look into my eyes and know I speak the truth when I say this. I love you, and I will never abandon you.
“Never.”

falling so hard, so fast this time
His paw was under her chin, and she allowed him to tip her gaze up to meet his. Her green eyes were wide and uncertain, a riot of emotion welling up inside her. 'Listen to me.' His tone was serious; he spoke in a manner she hadn't heard since her warrior ceremony. "I know what this is. This is love, Emberstorm, and it started when we touched noses in front of our Clanmates many moons ago."
She listened to him speak, of respect and freedom and the tricks she'd played on him, and though she took it all in, the storm in her eyes remained. He spoke of her ceremony and the events immediately before, of her strength and the trust she placed in him and of making a nest next to his, just for her.
He trailed off then, and she stood frozen, uncertain of what to do or say. She found that her bottom jaw had lowered, parting her mouth slightly, but she couldn't find the proper muscles to close it.
'I love you.' There. That was it. There was a name to the electricity that flowed in the space between them. Love. The word floated in her mind, and she tried to sift through the storm of emotion that made it so difficult to function. There was fear and uncertainty, but not the kind that came from a threatening situation. This fear was from within, this uncertainty from treading foreign waters. She was honest when she said she'd never felt this way before. Even the fear and uncertainty were new. Beneath those, though, something else stirred.
It was what made her fly and fall in the same breath, what made her melt and gave her butterflies and struck her dumb when he was near. She'd at first thought it to be several emotions, shifting faster than she could notice, but now that Thornstrike had put a name to it, she could see it. One emotion that could ignite so many others. As she came to realize this, her fear began to dissipate.
'You’re not going to lose me. I will always be your friend.' Those words took her fear away completely. Her biggest fear, the biggest obstacle keeping her from losing herself to him was that she would lose him, and now, he had taken that possibility away. Her confusion and uncertainty melted, and she felt more like herself again. 'I'm not going to lose him.' She repeated it to herself, to make herself sure of that certainty, that constant.
'I want you by my side for the rest of my moons. I will carry you when you need to be carried. I will share your fears, your heartache, and your success.' He would be there for her. She was beginning to realize that now. 'Look into my eyes and know I speak the truth when I say this. I love you, and I will never abandon you. Never.'
She knew now. She believed him. The storm in her chest lifted, and the clouds in her eyes faded away. She closed her eyes for a few heartbeats. She inhaled deeply. Exhaled slowly. When she opened her eyes again, her fire was back. Her eyes burned with an intensity that had never been there before, a fire that could be fueled by one thing: love. She held his gaze for a bit, before acting on impulse.
Emberstorm stepped forward, breaking the space between them. She pressed her chest hard against his, nuzzling her face into his neck. The feel of his fur against hers elicited a deep purr; his scent overwhelming her was intoxicating. "Thornstrike," she spoke into his throat, not wanting to break contact with him. "I love you, too."
