Gustkit
Despite straightening up and acquiring a somewhat smug expression, the young tom simply shrugged somewhat awkwardly in acknowledgement of her praise. At the nudge, he gave in to his impulses and climbed to his paws, tail flicking as he turned hopeful yellow-green eyes on his companion and wondered where she would lead him next. Granted, it was getting dark and visibility had diminished considerably since they had left camp behind, but that didn’t mean that there wasn’t anything else to see. The somewhat lenient air that had overcome him as he focused his attention on the fireflies in hopes of letting the she-cat enjoy her peace disappeared, driven away by the incessant curiosity that gnawed at his mind. Surely there was no harm in wandering the territory at night; besides, he could take on any predator that might be able to find them. He was a big kit, and he bested his brother all the time in their wrestling matches.
His energy dimmed, however, when he heard that their next destination would be none other than the boring old nursery in camp. ”Really?” A whine escaped him, and he stared after her departing figure for a moment in bitter disappointment before bounding forward and catching up to the apprentice. ”Do we have to? Mom’ll be okay. She has everyone else to look after!” It wasn’t him, he conceded, and Blazekit and the rest were hardly any good replacements for him, but he was willing to let that matter go if it meant that he could spend longer outside of camp, on their secret mission. Even though his paws were sore from all the walking and his legs had begun to feel heavy with every step – he only just noticed it now that she mentioned his exhaustion; had he really been that obviously tired? – Gustkit still wanted to continue exploring. There was so much more he could see. LightningClan territory wasn’t that small; it couldn’t be.
Despite his protests, Spottedpaw was unmoving in her decision to return to camp, and it was with leaden paws that he inconspicuously followed her into the familiar area. No one appeared to notice the odd sight of a kit returning through the entrance – or if they did, connect the dots and realize what it implied – and only then did he remember that he wasn’t actually supposed to be out of camp yet. Once that barrier had been breached, however, he couldn’t understand why that rule existed; nothing bad had happened just because he stepped a paw outside of their designated area. There wasn’t anything to worry about in LightningClan territory, and already he figured that he could go out exploring on his own. If he was feeling generous, perhaps he would bring his siblings along as well.
Jaws parting in a yawn, Gustkit stretched striped limbs and looked up at Spottedpaw with a grin on his face. ”I did,” He whispered back earnestly. ”And thanks.” Yellow-green eyes watched the apprentice leave before casting a longing glance back toward the entrance of camp. He would sneak out again, he promised himself as another yawn stretched open his mouth. Just not tonight. Tonight, he had a warm nest and dreams filled with adventure awaiting him.
