Over and over Starlingpaw said those words in her head, trying to picture the herb that Featherpaw pointed out before they left but the ebony she-cat was having trouble picturing it and wasn't having an easy time. Not that she was having a great day all together, her legs were sore and body battered, Blackwolf had trained her harshly over the past couple days, learning battle moves wasn't and Starlingpaw was learning the hard way Blackwolf was feared by more then just enemy cats.

Stepping carefully over a fallen branch, Starlingpaw's nose was twitching trying to pick up the scent but her nose just wasn't keen on finding herbs, but she had been able to catch a mouse not that she'd been really looking. Pausing for a second Starlingpaw looked around her, ears fluttering, taking in the sounds of the forest.

She noticed the tweets of the birds, rustle of the brush as mice rambled about, just a little out of her reach to actually go after them, instead she was peering into the bundles of grasses and herbs trying to seek it out, when he movement of undergrowth caught her attention.

"What's chervil again?" She asked out loud, turning to see Featherpaw coming up from behind her, Starlingpaw's eyes bright and pretty blue, hiding well the soreness in her body.

Insects walk below, I'm on a wire

Padding adjacent to her dark-furred friend, the young silver tabby absently stepped around the forest debris, her maw slightly open, pale green eyes searching. Smokefur's instructions were fresh in her mind, and as she inhaled, hoping for a promising scent to wash over her tongue.

Starlingpaw trotted, distracted, to her right. Her gaze fell on the other she-cat, whose attention was darting from birdsong to rustle and back again. She noted a subtle but out of character stiffness about her friend, a slight discomfort in the way the deputy's daughter was carrying herself. She made a mental note to ask her mentor about herbs to help dull mild pain. Perhaps poppy seeds? Her attention was drawn back as she made a small leap over a fallen log, tasting the air once more.

"What's chervil again?" Featherpaw glanced at her companion again, whiskers twitching. "Well," she began, "it's--" she broke off as a sweet, earthy scent floated over her. It took but a heartbeat for her sharp eyes to find the lattice leaves, and she bounded forward, excitement welling in her belly. She'd done it! "This!"

The tall stalks grew in a clump, and she observed them for a moment before beckoning her clanmate to her with her feathered tail. "See, these tall stalks with the fern-ish leaves and tiny white flowers," she began, enthusiasm causing her youthful voice to squeak a bit, "and..." she trailed off, waving her tail dismissively. Starlingpaw wouldn't find herbs interesting, and besides, that wasn't what she was here for. After briefly considering to ask the apprentice to help her, and then dismissing the idea at the thought of the damage the would-be warrior would likely do, she began digging. Delicately removing the dirt, recalling her mentor's precise instructions, she began to unearth the bulb-like root.

Thank StarClan I don't have to hunt herbs.
The ebony she-cat thought to herself as her attention wavered from the tantalizing scent of distant mouse to the bitter smell of the herb. Leaping over the log in the same manner as Featherpaw. Starlingpaw brushed her pelt against Featherpaw as she bent down to look at the herb and it's slightly appealing flower. Carefully the deputy's daughter sniffed at the leaves but recoiled in their strong smell and took a few steps back.

Pretending to care, Starlingpaw kept her ears perked and forward as Featherpaw started to explain the herb, but her eyes went glossy as she drifted into zoning out and it wasn't until Featherpaw stopped talking did she snap back."Sorry.." She mumbled softly, her ears slightly pinned down, knowing that it wasn't very polite to ignore her best friend, but it was difficult to actually care about plants when she much rather be looking around for mice or small birds.

"Why don't you pick what we need and I'll help you carry it back." Starlingpaw did her best not to express her dislike of her own idea, but it was a sweet attempt to make amends for being a dirt friend. As she waited for Featherpaw to start the task, Starlingpaw started her own by grooming her pelt, enjoying the simple and routine practice of being presentable.

Featherpaw moved the earth from around the thick root, kneading into the dark, moist soil. The dirt piled beneath her soft white belly, turning the long fur umber. Using her forepaws, she delicately pulled the tuber free. Careful not to break the stalks, she laid it beside her. Twitching her whiskers at the black she-cat, she instructed, "Just... leave it until I get the rest." These herbs were precious, and she would make sure that they got to camp intact.

She turned the remaining plants. Smokefur had told her to leave some of them behind, so that more could emerge. They were only to take all of a herb if it became absolutely necessary. She took a deep breath and began unearthing more of the chervil root. Focused on her task, she mumbled quietly to herself, her words incoherent, ears twitched back.

The medicine cat apprentice dug up two more roots, slightly worried that she was overestimating their ability to carry the herbs back. Taking up the large roots in her maw, she motioned for Starlingpaw to do the same. Careful not to let her fangs sink in to the root, she deftly lifted her head and, waiting for her friend to grab the remaining chervil. Her jaw stretched wide around the tuber root, Featherpaw turned back towards camp, her light green eyes calm and thoughtful. Dirty paws moving faintly across the pine needle-strewn forest floor, her senses were filled with the distinct, slightly sweet scent.

Accomplishment swelling in her belly, her pace increased. She couldn't wait to get back to camp. Smokefur would be proud.
