The ground beneath his paws was spongy and soft; the pine needles were a great impact absorber, making his pawsteps quiet and light. He crept slowly through the forest, his body low, long fur skimming the pungent earth slightly.

The white tom kept his honey gaze trained on the small creature as it scuttled carelessly through the undergrowth; it had not yet noticed the young cat as it went about it’s business. This suited Frostwind just fine as he took another tentative step forward, his tail tip flicking just slightly as he moved.

He was a foxleap away when the tiny animal finally took notice of him, but it was too late; a flurry of pine needles and leaf litter and a streak of white through the air and the mouse was caught between two large, white paws. With one swift bite, it was all over.

Picking up his prey in his teeth, Frostwind lifted his head, his tail following suit proudly. The morning’s hunt had gone well; he would be adding two mice, including this one, as well as a plump chaffinch and a vole to the freshkill pile before sunhigh.

The earthy, warm scents of the mouse in his jaws made his mouth water; the scent was tantalizing, especially after a hunt. He ached as hunger clawed through his belly, but he would not eat until he had deposited his catch back at camp. While it was true, he wasn’t technically on a hunting mission (he had come out on his own early this morning), he still believed that the Clan came first.

With the mouse clamped firmly in his teeth, he turned and trotted back towards the camp. He had buried his earlier kills not far from the camp entrance, and he would stop and collect them before heading home.

The white tom had just picked up the scents of his prey cache when a flurry of motion caught his attention. It was a robin, pecking around busily at the base of a tree several foxlengths in front of him. He dropped into a crouch quickly, hoping his movement and white pelt hadn’t alerted the bird to his presence.

Eyes wide, he watched as the small bird hopped around, pecking the earth as it went. If he was careful, he would have quite the prize to take back to camp. He placed one paw in front of him slowly, deliberately, so as not to alert the bird.

so let's set the world on fire

Rowanpaw had been stuck in the camp all day, removing bedding from the elder's den and the nursery. The sorrel apprentice had accumulated a generous ball of old moss, and now that the two dens were empty, it was time to get rid of it. One of the other apprentices was already on their way in with fresh moss.

Rowanpaw added another scrap of moss to the ball she had formed. Green eyes narrowed at the ball as she moved behind it, her ears barely poking over the top. Rowanpaw moved forward slowly, pushing the ball forward with her nose. Carefully, she navigated her way out of the camp, muttering sorries and excuse mes to passing cats.

The apprentice made it out of the camp with little trouble, and began making her way to dispose of it. Rowanpaw began moving faster as the ball began to roll, the slight downward slope causing the moss ball to gain momentum. Rowanpaw tripped on the uneven ground, and the ball rolled away, startling a robin from it's pecking. The apprentice hopped to her paws and ran after it, not noticing the cat lurking nearby.

The ball of moss hit a tree and split, sending the once-packed moss flying. Rowanpaw skidded to a halt in the middle of the mess, moss catching in her fur. Green eyes glared at the scattered moss, sorrel fur bristling in frustration. The apprentice pawed away a scrap of moss and turned away from the mess. It was then that she noticed the white cat standing there.

Rowanpaw's tail dropped and her fur fell flat as she stared at the large tom. Her green eyes grew wide as she remembered the loud cry the robin had made as it fled her moss ball. She stood there, giving her best deer in headlights look, and hoped he hadn't been hunting the robin.

Before he could take another slow, cautious step towards the unsuspecting bird, a ball of what appeared to be moss rolled into view, starting both bird and cat alike. The robin unfolded its wings and launched into the air, a shrill, indignant shriek sounding through the still forest.

Frostwind stood slowly from his hunting crouch, the fur along his spine and tail fluffed up. He glanced around briefly before spotting the tawny apprentice standing nearby; he had been so focused on the robin that he hadn’t even taken notice of her scent. He scuffled the ground with his paws, distracted. Turning his neck, he licked the fur on his shoulder briskly to lay it flat once more.

“Rowenpaw, what happened?” he meowed, turning his head to gaze at her. She looked absolutely flabbergasted; his whiskers twitched in amusement at her wide, shocked eyes. He nudged a clump of moss that littered the ground; it was old, most likely from the Nursery and Elders’ nests.

The lost robin had been a stroke of bad luck, but he had managed to catch a decent amount of prey already, so he wasn’t that concerned about it. He could always go and find another bird if he felt like it was needed.

“Don’t worry about that robin.” He shifted his gaze to the direction the bird had taken. “It was probably old and tough, anyway.” He knew that it wasn’t, of course. It was a young bird, plump and juicy due to the benefits of new-leaf. He hoped the apprentice wasn’t taking it too hard.

The sorrel she-cat stared in shock as the white warrior padded closer. "Rowanpaw, what happened?" As she stared, she began to realize he looked familiar; he had only recently been made a warrior.. Frostwind, he was called.

"Frostwind, I'm so sorry! I was bringing the moss from the nursery and the elders' den, and I thought it would be easier to take it all out at once in a big ball, and then it just started rolling and I tried to keep up but it kept going faster and I was running and it just kept going faster and then there was a bird and then the tree and now moss.. moss everywhere and I don't know what happened but I'm sorry!" The apprentice gasped in a long breath, after her words tripped over each other to escape her mouth.

She stood there for a moment, panting slightly. Her account of the events leading up to this moment had been a rushed, blurred mess, and she needed a moment to collect herself and catch her breath, both literally and metaphorically. "Don’t worry about that robin. It was probably old and tough, anyway." Rowanpaw pricked her ears, seeing that the warrior had no hard feelings about the lost prey.

Her fur began to lay flat, and her bushy tail curled upward slightly. "Yea, it probably was.." Rowanpaw followed Frostwind's gaze, so that both cats were looking to where the bird had flown. The apprentice sat still for a moment, longer, before her head turned back to Frostwind. "So, how have you been? It's a little weird not having you in the apprentices' den anymore. Oooh, what's the warriors' den like? It must be nice being able to leave the camp whenever you wish, without having to tell your mentor where you are. Do you enjoy being a warrior? I can't WAIT for my warrior ceremony." Her earlier actions were forgotten as she spoke, her words at first coming out in a gentle stream, but soon exploding into an unstoppable train of thought as her mind jumped from one thing to another.
