Nothing could've ever prepared Redwind for the intense loss and grief that she felt right now. Despite only having been his deputy for a couple of moons and before becoming deputy barely knowing him, she felt like she had known the LightningClan leader for a lifetime. And now he was dead. She was to be LightningClan's Leader. The thought scared her in many ways. I'm no leader! she thought desperately, I'm hardly even a deputy! Pacing up and down outside the medicine cat’s den, she thought back to the sight of Blazestar’s limp body. At least he was no longer suffering; he was in StarClan now. He had looked so... peaceful. Sighing, she realised what must be done. I need to announce his death to the clan. Redwind couldn’t bear the idea of announcing it so soon. The grief welling up inside her chest was constantly threatening to break out and the yellow-ginger tabby didn’t want that to happen in front of the rest of the clan. She pulled herself together, Come on, Redwind! You’ve got to tell them! Redwind shuddered, he had died of greencough she had been informed, before Rookfrost had even had the chance to go with him to the Moon Tree. What if that happens to me? The red-yellow tabby shook away the thought and gazed up at the hill top. That’s where the clan leader makes their announcements. Redwind still couldn’t get over the fact that she was to be leader now. Scrambling up the hill, she took her place on a boulder jutting out of the grass and spoke the words she had heard so many times, "May all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather below the hill top for a clan meeting." Redwind waited patiently for the clan to gather, her tail tucked neatly around her paws. She could sense their confusion at finding their deputy, instead of their leader calling them to a clan meeting. Once satisfied they were all gathered, she began to speak. "I bring you grave news," she spoke loud and clear; she didn’t want to repeat herself, "Blazestar, as you know has not been able to receive his nine lives due to illness." She gave them a little time to take the information in, "But what you didn’t know was that he had a severe case of greencough," she bowed her head a little as she prepared to give them the news of their leader’s death, "This morning, Blazestar passed onto StarClan." She could feel the grief welling up inside of her and quickly swallowed it. Now was the time to be strong, not to crumble. Pulling herself together, she spoke again, "Rookfrost and I will be leaving for the Moon Tree shortly." Redwind stood tall for a second, amber gaze sweeping over her clan. I’m going to be their leader, she thought, StarClan, guide me well![/style]

And then came the silence.
A great hush seemed to befall the crowd that had gathered at Redwind's feet, a pair of eerily clear gray eyes shifting from right to left as though to take in as much as one possibly could in the span of a few disbelieving seconds. Blazestar was dead. He had passed before sunhigh, and after a long discussion with Redwind, the Clan was called together, and the announcement was made. The tom who had known first, whom Rookfrost had personally approached and divulged the information to, was Rapidwind. Though they had not been brothers in terms of blood and parentage, they had been brothers in the less literal sense, and that had, in Rookfrost's eyes, made the silver tabby Blazestar's next of kin.
That, and the she-cat of RainClan to whom he had a final message for, the last words their leader had whispered upon his deathbed. Cross-Clan relationships were not something he frowned upon, nor encouraged - frankly he didn't care who loved whom for what reasons. Love had never been his concern, and nor would it be. It was out of courtesy to respect their leader's last few breaths that he would make the trouble of approaching the one called Roselight to convey Blazestar's final message.
Or not. Who knows? He might find something more interesting to do and get completely side-tracked.
For right now, however, he needed to speak with the three cats he and Redwind had selected for the trip to the Moon Tree. Mousepaw, Emberflight, and Rootstride. Searching for those familiar faces and pelts, the shadowy Medicine Cat left Snowpaw in charge of healing in his absence, stepping forward on soundless paws as he waded through the crowd. A quick glance stolen in Redwind's direction told him what he already knew; she was under a lot of pressure and a lot of stress, and it was up to him to lessen the load a little. He couldn't care less about the loss they had suffered, or the impact it would have on the Clan, in terms of emotions; in the political sense, however, Rookfrost could at least work up the effort to be genuinely concerned with the Clan's overall standing. A strong leader, a strong deputy, a strong Medicine Cat; three things LightningClan could really use right now.
Pausing to give Redwind a supportive nod, the healer and the heathen approached the first of the three he was seeking. "Redwind and I will be needing an escort to reach the Moon Tree. Unless you cannot go for some reason, you have been chosen as part of the escort. I've left traveling herbs for you just outside my den entrance." There, that was easy enough to follow. Now to just grab the other two...

. : B u r n i n g l e a f : . 328 The lean, somewhat skinny ginger and white tom had just strode into the LightningClan camp, jaws clamped around the small field mouse that had been the only prey he'd seen on his hunt. He dropped the meager offering onto the fresh-kill pile, his stomach rumbling under exposed ribs. Redwind's call pulled him away before he could offer the pile a second glance, and without a further thought about his own well-being, he turned away, pacing to where the deputy sat.
"I bring you grave news. Blazestar, as you know, has not been able to receive his nine lives due to illness. But what you didn’t know was that he had a severe case of greencough. This morning, Blazestar passed onto StarClan. Rookfrost and I will be leaving for the Moon Tree shortly." Burningleaf, notorious for his inability to hide emotion, stayed true to his personality. His jaws parted as his amber eyes filled with shock. There was a hint of sorrow, but he hadn't known Blazestar that well. It wasn't like when...
Burningleaf stopped the thoughts before they could start, his head lowering as he stared at the ground. No, he couldn't think of him now. The senior warrior closed his jaws and lifted his head, eyes still holding a bit of shock. But also, there was concern. For his Clan, for Redwind, for the future. His jaws parted again, and this time his voice slipped out, rough, but strong.
"Travel safe, Redwind. May StarClan be at your side, as we mourn the loss of a leader too young." Burningleaf flicked his tail as he finished, dipping his head. Internally, he let the question rage through his entire being. 'How many more must life take from us? How many more to enter StarClan's ranks, before there is reprieve for we who haunt the land?' As the thought began to form in his mind, he closed his eyes, to prevent those near from seeing his inner turmoil.

The hushed silence was only broken, when Rookfrost spoke to the first cat that they had chosen to escort them to the Moon Tree. "Redwind and I will be needing an escort to reach the Moon Tree. Unless you cannot go for some reason, you have been chosen as part of the escort. I’ve left travelling herbs for you just outside of my den entrance." Unsure of what to say next, Redwind just stood in silence; her head bowed in respect to their dead leader. The yellow-ginger tabby only looked up when she heard another voice rise above the crowd and this time it was Burningleaf. "Travel safe, Redwind. May StarClan be at your side, as we mourn the loss of a leader too young." The ginger tabby and white tom then dipped his head before falling silent once more. Redwind silently thanked StarClan for his support before speaking. "Thank you, Burningleaf," she dipped her head to the senior warrior as he had done to her. He’d make a good choice for deputy. she realised. Deputy? she hadn’t thought that far ahead yet. When she returned from the Moon Tree she’d have to announce her new deputy. Thinking about it properly though, perhaps the ginger and white tom wasn’t such a great choice. He’s a little old, Redwind decided. She would have to choose an experienced warrior, but not one of Burningleaf’s age as he would be retiring to the elders’ den in several seasons time. [/style]

Surely, the words that came forth from the deputy's mouth were unexpected, earning the sudden, sharp widening of the warrior's yellow eyes. They did not send an emotion of grief flooding through his chest, however. As shock suddenly spread throughout the assembled cats like a forest fire, Emberflight sported his best fake frown as to not stand out. Surely, Emberflight had respected Blazestar as leader, his lack of grief wasn't due to any hatred at all. He was pleased because the spot of deputy now was open, just waiting to be snagged. If Redwind was a smart she-cat, she'd surely recognize the tom's potential. If not, it'd be just another day to completely repulse the gruff natured feline. The last thing he wanted was another cat to be superior to himself.Emberflight had caught whiff of Rookfrost's scent a moment before the Medicine Cat with as eerie a personality as his deep black fur approached. As he spoke, the orange-faced tom subtly turned his head in his direction, his amber eyes gleaming with honour, more or less. "Thank you, Rookfrost. I'll gather them right away." The enthusiastic initiative behind Emberflight's deeply tone voice evolved into a bothersome frown and a roll of his eyes upon turning away from the Medicine Cat. His paws were leading him toward the Medicine Den, where Rookfrost had apparently left traveling herbs for him to gather. Goodie. Hopefully, this journey to the moon tree could get up and over with so he could be announced deputy of this clan and show them some true leadership. (He's not actually trying out for deputy. He'd turn Lightningclan into something brutal. xD. He's just power hungry, is all~).[/style] [style=font-size: 10px; text-align: center;]TEMPLATE BY SAMARECARM OF OTE + BTN[/style]

birds flying high you know how I feel sun in the sky you know how I feel it's a new dawn it's a new day it's a new life for me -- and I'm feeling good --
ROOTSTRIDE~ The yellow green gaze of the tom opened in small, banana shaped slits and his long back legs pushed themselves outwards as the LightningClan senior warrior attempted to awaken from an afternoon slumber. Tired eyes hardly reacted to the call of the clan to the Hill Top, simply because Rootstride initially did not recognize that he was back to reality. The call of the clan to the Hill Top was what woke him, but, as he had just become conscious moments afterwards, he did not hear the call. What alerted him to the deputy's call was the movement of other cats towards the clan meeting point. While the movements of cats in LightningClan camp was, of course, not shocking, the fact that so many cats moved at once and with such purpose was.
The orange tabby rose to his paws and stepped gingerly out of the Warrior's Den, his limbs feeling a resounding ache from the cold, the cramped living space, and his age. While Rootstride was still an able-bodied warrior and did not wish to be taken to the elder's den, his yellowish eyes did eye those with a sedentary lifestyle with some jealousy on some days. Feeling the wind against his fur and his heart pumping to the thrill of the hunt, however, brought him back to the joys of warrior life.
Spotting Redwind atop of the Hill Top, his stomach became twisted in knots. Though Redwind's news was unknown to the maine coon, Rootstride instantly was filled with dread and questions as to why Redwind was still leading his clan. The senior warrior sat on his haunches and peered up at Redwind with concerned eyes.
It was a good thing that the tom was sitting -- because, when the deputy -- no, leader, announced Blazestar's death, Rootstride was crushed. Such a young life and such a great leader. Gone, the tabby thought to himself and glanced around to feel the same strong sense of sadness resounding from his clan-mates. Rootstride bowed his head for a few moments to wish the dead leader well amongst StarClan.
After Rootstride was informed about his part in Redwind's journey to receive his lives, the orange tabby padded over to the medicine cat den to lap up the bitter herbs. The tall tom's gaze only flashed upwards from the ground for a moment to spy Emberflight leaving the medicine cat den as well. He must be involved with the journey as well, Rootstride thought to himself as he watched him depart. The tom did not question nor complain about his impending journey. The tom was an able-bodied warrior and loyal to his clan and future leader until death.
Dipping his head, the tom ate the leaves, one by one and grimaced a little at their taste.

M O U S E P A W Mousepaw had been in the middle of giving herself an afternoon wash when Redwind, the deputy, called for a clan meeting. Quickly, green eyes looked at the hill, seeing only the deputy there and not the clan's leader. Where was Blazestar? The apprentice knew that the new leader had been sick, but she didn't know he hadn't received his nine lives. After all, his name was BlazeSTAR, not Blazehawk anymore. Concerned, the grey she-cat slinked over to where the rest of the cats were, though she made sure to sit off to the side and not with all the warriors that she didn't really know. Blazestar was dead? The news that he hadn't actually received his nine lives was worrying, and explained why the tom had died so easily from the sickness. Mousepaw herself wasn't so affected from the news he died as much as she was worried about the leadership of the clan. It seemed like yesterday when Emberstar had died, and now Blazestar (Blazehawk?) was gone. How soon would it be until Redwind died? The news that she and Rookfrost were leaving soon for the Moon Tree was welcome. A leader having nine lives made them nine times harder to kill. Reassured that LightningClan was safe for a little while, Mousepaw slinked away from the group and resumed her afternoon wash, idly wondering what the Moon Tree looked like...
At least, until Rookfrost approached her. Instantly the apprentice stopped grooming herself and righted herself onto all four paws, making sure to not look the large black tom in the eye. Be careful what you wish for... Mousepaw made an assenting noise not dissimilar to her namesake and scampered off to the medicine cat's den, where her mentor and another tom were already eating some bundles of plants. So, those were the traveling herbs? Making sure to stick closer to Rootstride than the tom she didn't know, the all-grey apprentice pawed the bundle closer to her and attempted to eat them. Eugh; yuck! Mousepaw almost stopped eating them altogether, but the combination of her mentor right there and the mere chance that the medicine cat might get upset with her overcame the gross taste of the herbs. She managed to eat all of them, and hung back nervously next to Rootstride while she waited for further instructions from her mentor. He was the oldest warrior she knew, so he would have the most idea of what to do.

It would do no one any good to cause a panic over a leader who did not have nine lives; now that the grim seriousness of the situation had bled through into full-blown tragedy, Rookfrost was conscious of his desire to do things properly this time. If it had been up to him, he would have dragged Blazehawk's greencough-riddled body all the way to the Moon Tree, trusting StarClan to do their duty if he did his.
However, Blazehawk had been in no condition to travel, not through snow and sleet and frozen rain.
Laying aside these thoughts of the past, the shadowy black tom spied all three cats he had gathered, entrusting Rootstride, the oldest of the three, to take charge of the situation while he sought out their next would-be leader. Approaching the ginger she-cat, Rookfrost set his bundle of herbs down and cleared his throat, cold mechanical tone rising up out of his chest along with a few chilly clouds of frost; "The party has been formed. Eat, and we will proceed to the Moon Tree. LightningClan will once again have a leader with all nine lives." Though that last line hardly fit the brusqueness with which he delivered his emotionless dialog, he felt it a necessary attempt at emotional support for the she-cat who suddenly had so much on her plate. Nudging the bundle towards her with one solid black paw, Rookfrost momentarily excused himself to deliver his final instructions to the white bundle of fluff that was his pupil.
When that was over and done with, the shadowy tom once again approached the party of three waiting beside the entrance, a casual flick of the ear signalling he had noticed the absence of herbs. As expected. He did not need to stress the importance of getting Redwind to the Moon Tree, every cat in the Clan, nearly down to the kits, understood just how crucial it was that LightningClan once more get a powerful new leader with divine longevity. "Though I do not expect it to start snowing, we will travel as though we expect it to, and need only rest momentarily once we are across the StoneClan border."
StoneClan. That simple, yet complex word jogged the tom's memory and forced thoughts of his meeting with Swanfeather to bubble up to the surface; he would have a word with Redstar about taking Sun Stones. Predicting quite a bit of heavy flooding when all of this snow finally melted, they would surely be needing the dry land, though he did not anticipate the camp actually accumulating too much water. However, it would be hard for the ground to absorb all the moisture while it was still mostly frozen... Icy gray eyes narrowed, and he signaled for the party to rise and follow him, Rookfrost pivoting around to face Redwind.
So much to prepare for, and so very little time.

Dipping her head, she expressed her thanks, "Good," her amber gaze trailed off to the sky above. Will it snow today? The white stuff was the last thing the LightningClan deputy, no, leader, needed. As if to read her mind, Rookfrost spoke again, "Though I do not expect it to start snowing, we will travel as though we expect it to, and need only rest momentarily once we are across the StoneClan border." Redwind nodded, but didn't utter a word; there was too much on her mind right now. Settling herself, she quickly swallowed the herbs, grimacing a little as the foul-tasting leaves slid down her throat. The ginger tabby she-cat wasn't usually impatient, but right now she just wanted to get going. The sooner I get my nine lives, the better. Rising to already weary paws, she nodded to Rookfrost to signal that she was ready to go. They hadn't even left camp and the nerves were already building up inside the red-ginger tabby. What if StarClan aren't there? Forcing her worries to the back of her mind, she tried to compose herself a little. If her clan picked up on her unease then they wouldn't put their faith in her. A strong leader is at the heart of a good clan, her mother had always told her. Runningbreeze. Redwind swallowed the grief welling up inside of her. Perhaps, if she was lucky, her mother would be one of the cats to give her nine lives? Maybe Bramblethorn will be there too? Perhaps it was the thought of seeing her lost parents that cheered Redwind up as she suddenly felt a rush of determination. She would get to the Moon Tree and she would get her nine lives. LightningClan needed a strong leader; could Redwind be that cat? [/style]
