The huge StoneClan deputy watched his apprentice and the other warrior from the shadows of the forest with a keen interest. He noted that his apprentice had not picked up on the scent of the mouse that Frozenrain had located. Still, the apprentice noted Frozenrain's clues and followed her to the position of the mouse. Amber eyes watched the positioning of the younger tom's body, noting that his stance was well balanced, which was important. More so when you were as large as Hawkwing himself. He then watched as the apprentice leaped right into a thicket of brambles. Sandy ears shot up and the StoneClan deputy blinked in shock.
He was out of the undergrowth and standing beside Frozenrain the moment Umberpaw walked back out with the mouse firmly in his jaws. He gave his apprentice a slight nod of approval, before flicking his tail and speaking. "Good catch, Umberpaw. However, you should be more careful. I don't care how thick your coat is, leaping into a thicket of brambles like that isn't the smartest thing to do. You've cut your ear. When we return to camp, I'll ask you to go and check in with the medicine cat. StarClan knows what might be on those brambles, just waiting to cause an infection. And StarClan forbid, had that been your eye. Brambles can be as dangerous as any opponent if you don't pay attention."
He wasn't trying to find fault in what Umberpaw had done. He was honestly worried about the well being of his apprentice. This was obvious in the tone of concern that laced the tom's voice. However, with another flick of his tail, he continued, his voice lighter. "That being said, your stance and your balance have improved considerably. Your pounce was excellent, though I did not see the kill itself." He then turned to blink at the warrioress beside him. "Anything to add, Frozenrain?"

Not a muscle woven inside the bodily system of the gray-and-white tabby feline shifted as keen eyes observed the mouse from their position amongst the thickly enclosed brambles, that was, not until Hawkwing's apprentice whispered the shortest phrase: “I got this,” followed by his meticulous pounce through the foliage to reach the prey of choice. Immediately, Frozenrain's baby blue eyes widened out of shock, straightening her stance in an attempt of getting a better view of his performance. Through the thickness of the brambles, it was providing to be quite a difficult challenge to successfully peer through the various tangles of lightly snow-coated greenery. She captured the briefest glimpse of black-and-white fur, before the brambles parted yet again – a mouse clamped in the jaws of Umberpaw.
It started off with a smirk lightly dancing its way across the white furred jaw of Frozenrain, her head nodding in approval of his successful hunt. However, the congratulatory words on the tip of her tongue were cut short by the StoneClan deputy's sudden appearance at her flank. She flashed Hawkwing a curious gaze, attentive ears closely tied into each word he spoke. For the most part, it remained to be a mixture of worrisome lecture about the cut Umberpaw had received at the top of his ear. Frozenrain's ghostly, pale blue eyes flickered to the injury Hawkwing was inquiring about, carefully analyzing the wound to form her own opinion of the matter. She nodded in agreement with Hawkwing's bringing up of a visit to the medicine cat, not returning her gaze to the lighter furred tom-cat until her name was detected. "Anything to add, Frozenrain?"
The she-cat's warm, gentle eyes averted from Hawkwing to Umberpaw. “I would say Hawkwing covered the basics. Your initiative to take immediate charge was admirable. You should never give the prey enough time to escape, or cue in to your nearby presence.” A grin tugged the corner of her mouth upward, her tail swishing against Hawkwing's flank. “I'm sure you already know that, though.” Although her gaze had been upon Hawkwing, she was addressing Umberpaw. Of course, she had no doubts in her mind whatsoever that Hawkwing wasn't a skilled mentor.
Umberpaw was surely in talented, capable paws.

U M B E R P A W The apprentice turned his head towards Hawkwing, surprised that his mentor had revealed himself during the assessment. Is it over already? He only caught the one mouse, and both the warriors indicated he did a good job... Or maybe it wasn't an assessment, and Umberpaw was just jumping to conclusions. The mottled tom dropped the mouse at his feet and started re-arraigning his fur after it was rumpled from the bramble bush, ears focusing on what his mentor was saying. A cut? Umberpaw stopped grooming and swept a paw by his ear, finally registering the small amount of pain and noticing the smell of cat-blood on his paws. "Oh." This wasn't the first time his ears got injured due to their inability to fold back, and the apprentice was sure it wouldn't be the last. "I kept my eyes closed, though," the tom added, trying to alleviate his mentor's worries. He had learned that trick a while ago, from a much older cat, and used it often.
Olive eyes blinked gratefully at Hawkwing's praise; what cat didn't like being told they did well? The praise that did surprise him, however, came from Frozenrain; with the knowledge that it wasn't an assessment, Umberpaw was a bit embarrassed about taking over the prey she scented first. "I only took over because I thought it was an assessment," the apprentice muttered, licking a bit of his chest fur clean. He didn't bother telling Frostrain he knew what she was saying already; she knew he knew and he knew she knew he knew. "If this was a normal hunting patrol, I would have let you chase it and been prepared to catch it if it escaped you." That's what he had been taught to do, at any rate: the apprentice had never been on an actual hunting patrol before.
He wanted to know what Frostrain would have done differently, but something Hawkwing had said finally sunk into his brain. "Do I have to go back to camp now?" Umberpaw asked, only slightly disappointed. He had wanted to learn and compare the other warrior's techniques to his mentor's, but he liked the medicine cat and his apprentice and didn't mind talking to them instead.

The large, sand colored tom listened to his apprentice, giving him a nod. "I understand, and I'm sure Frozenrain does't mind that you took over the hunt. After all, she and I are warriors, it's your training that matters at the moment." Upon hearing the younger tom's final question, the StoneClan deputy paused, flicking his ear thoughtfully. He was painfully aware that his apprentice would want to continue the training, as having Frozenrain tag along was an excellent opportunity to learn. Yet... An infection was nothing pleasant. For the big tom, safety always came first. It was with this in mind that the tom made a partial decision.
"I think it would be wise for you to return to camp and have it checked now. The sooner you do so, the more likely you are to fight off the infection. However, this isn't to say that you can't return afterwards. You may have caught something for the Clan, but Frozenrain and I have yet to do so. I couldn't return to the Clan empty pawed. I have a feeling we'll still be out hunting, if you hurry it up." With that, he glanced at the she-cat beside him. "What do you think, Frozenrain? Will we be hunting for a while yet?" His amber eyes were even and steady as he awaited her reply. The tom's size seemed proportional to the size of his heart, and the amount he cared for others.

“Oh, most certainly we will.” the gray-white tabby feline mewed, flashing the StoneClan deputy a pleasant smirk. “After all: It's going to take you a while to keep up with the prey I'll be dragging into camp.” Prior to the afternoon's event, Frozenrain never would have been gutsy enough to address the deputy of her clan with such a hint of sarcasm. However, as the day continued to drag along, she found herself growing increasingly comfortable in the tom-cat's company.
You know, he wasn't entirely bad-looking for a tom. And, his manners were certainly admirable. Hmm. Frozenrain blinked thoughtful blue eyes in Hawkwing's direction, her attention snagged down toward the black-and-white apprentice nearby with the mouse still dangling from his jaws. “Oh, and, not to worry Umberpaw. It likely was an assessment, after all.” Frozenrain once again found her eyes averting in the direction of Hawkwing, referencing to his immediate arrival upon Umberpaw's catch and his follow up of things he excelled with, and things he didn't.
Nudging the deputy gently in the shoulder, she pivoted with a graceful radiation from white furred heels and started off in the direction she found most accurate to continue hunting. Halting abruptly, she spared a glance over lithe shoulders toward the pair of tom-cat's still in their same positioning. “I'll probably be seeing you again later, Umberpaw, after your visit to the medicine cat's den. And Hawkwing,” her pale blue eyes traveled from the apprentice to the mentor, a slight grin forming at the corner of her jaw. “don't want to fall too behind, now.” She chuckled softly, her slender figure slipping into the tangles of foliage until the moment the entirety of her frame was no longer visible in the clearing to the tom's watchful gazes.

U M B E R P A W Umberpaw nodded once at Hawkwing’s forgivement of his lack of manners, although he was a little disappointed that he hadn’t stepped back and watched what Frozenrain would have done instead. Not cut her ear, for one. Olive eyes watched the older tom patiently, waiting for his decision. When it finally came, the seasoned apprentice was not surprised at his mentor’s choice. Nor was he all too bothered by it; the mottled cat had a few questions he had wanted to ask Blackeagle, and he could see if Ivypaw made any headway with the ‘where did StarClan live’ question…
Curled ears perked up when Hawkwing mentioned returning, but the more Umberpaw thought about it, the more he decided that he’d probably take too long at the medicine cat’s den to come back here in time, especially after factoring in that they were leaving this area. “I’ll try; I have a few questions for Blackeagle first.” With his fascination with SilverPelt and StarClan, the mottled tom always seemed to have questions for the medicine cat.
Olive eyes blinked gratefully at Frozenrain, both for her reassurance that she didn’t mind him butting in and at the offer of meeting later. He was curious, but there were always other hunts. Besides, she and Hawkwing were doing that weird-talking thing again, and Umberpaw wasn’t entirely sure what to make of it. “Goodbye, Fros- Frozenrain,” the apprentice called out, and with a much less formal, “See you later, Hawkwing,” he headed back to camp. Despite all his interest and amassed knowledge of StarClan, Umberpaw had no idea what was to be done for a cut, even though this wasn’t the first time it happened.

The StoneClan deputy watched as his apprentice left, telling them he would try to catch up to them, but that he wanted to discuss something with the medicine cat. The sand colored tom shrugged slightly, not minding if his apprentice chose to do that rather than return. They would have time to train later. The large tom was about to speak when Frozenrain beat him to it. He felt her nudge his shoulder, causing his amber gaze to turn towards her questioningly. Ears pricked up in shock slightly at what the younger she-cat said, before a chuckle escaped him. That was certainly unexpected. Him? Fall behind? Just watch.
He was on the move, heading in the direction she had disappeared, just as the bushes began to lose their momentum. They were soon pushed aside by his larger frame. His jaws were parted as he followed her scent, moving surprisingly quickly and agile for a tom his size. Soon enough, she was in his sight. He wove around trees, pulling up to her flank before giving her a very strong nudge, putting his weight into it with a wicked grin, and and innocent look in his eyes. He meant to knock her over. Sometimes it was obvious he was still young at heart.

The gray-white she-cat had been in the midst of winding her way through the trees of StoneClan territory, keenly upon the trail of a mouse's fragrance. In fact, she was so entirely tuned into the hunt, that she had been caught off guard by the sudden flanking and powerful nudge of Hawkwing. It was clear he had meant to knock her off her paws, and he had nearly done so had she not tested her quick reflexes and caught herself mid-tumble to the terrain. Twisting her head in the tom-cat's direction, she returned his smile with one of her own. “You know, Hawkwing, I would expect you knew better than to disturb a cat on the hunt.”
Frozenrain returned to her position at the deputy's flank, her tail flicking against the base of his neck as she attempted to quicken her strides and travel in front. Glancing over lean shoulders, her baby blue eyes fixated upon the lighter furred tom, a curiousity glazing her expression. Momentarily, all thoughts upon the mouse-hunt had vanished from her mind, now thoughtful on the concept of whether or not he was simply messing around, or had a spark of interest passed this friendly conversation.
Thankfully, Frozenrain was no coward when it came to a situation quite like this. She was the type of she-cat that would sooner discover an answer for herself, instead of waiting with a heart-ache for a tom to make the first move.
Suddenly, her pale blue eyes accustomed to a narrowed feature, white jaws parting to voice aloud her inner accusation of StoneClan's deputy. “Hawkwing, with all of this playful, goofing around, I'd assume you're by no means, interested in just a friendship.” [/i][/b] How was that for outright stating what was on a feline's mind? Flashing the tom-cat a smirk, she returned her attention frontwards. A part of her, quite eager for his answer.[/blockquote][/size]

At her first comment, the large StoneClan deputy only offered an 'innocent' grin and a shrug of his heavy shoulders. His jaws parted, catching the scent of the mouse she had been stalking before he had interrupted her. By some StarClan given miracle, it was still where it was, probably scurrying around and trying to find something to eat. He expected Frozenrain to continue after the same mouse, but it seemed as though she wasn't finished speaking yet. His ears angled towards her as she spoke once more, catching him off guard, though he managed to hide it well.
He watched silently as she turned her attention back to the mouse, and closed the distance between herself and the prey. Although it would seem almost as though he were evaluating her, in truth, his mind was anywhere but on hunting. Had she been right with what she'd said? The sand colored tom's amber eyes blinked slowly as he thought back. He had never really spent much time with Frozenrain, today being the longest amount of time they had spoken by a long shot. To be honest, he'd never thought of anything like that, simply because of the age gap that lay between them. The StoneClan deputy was beyond certain that Frozenrain was not nearly fifty moons like he was. His sand colored tail flicked behind him slightly as he waited for her to return, before he opened his jaws to speak.
"And what if such was the case."

Frozenrain pushed her way back through the brambles, back toward where Hawkwing had remained in wait; mouse successfully clamped in her jaw. “And what if such was the case.” Her baby blue eyes found there way toward Hawkwing, gray-white ears perking forwardly as she knelt down to place the mouse upon the terrain, her front paws digging up the dirt to bury the captured prey. “Firstly, I would feel obligated to approve in your taste of she-cats.” Patting the dirt back into its proper placement, the feline allowed her gaze to avert back toward the lighter furred deputy.
She grinned, refraining from permitting a chuckle of amusement to wiggle its way out from her vocal chords. “And secondly,” her hackles folded beneath her weight into a comfortably seated stance, thinly furred tabby tail curling neatly atop her tucked forepaws. “Admit to a possible commonality shared between us.”
Hawkwing seemed awful nervous, though it could easily be her eyes playing tricks. Whereas Frozenrain was completely comfortable in the situation. She didn't see any reason to act as though this was a conversation where a quality of shyness should befall her. Hawkwing was, in fact, a tom-cat that had the traits she often found to be necessary: chivalry, manners, and overall, pleasant company she easily found herself enjoying.

Amber eyes focused on Frozenrain as he watched her bury her catch. His coat, which was slightly ruffled by a passing breeze, began to lie flat again as she met his gaze with her sky-hued eyes. Upon her first comment, a grin tugged at his lips. Frozenrain, playful and sharp as always. He listened as she finished, his yellow-tinted eyes blinking slowly at her. This was something he had not expected. It showed in the slight tilt of his head as he considered her. "A commonality..." He repeated, his voice a low rumble as he spoke. He gave a half-chuckle half-snort as his gaze shifted, glancing up through the trees, to what little of the sky he could see from within the forest.
Tan tail sweeping around his paws, the StoneClan deputy lowered his gaze so that it rested once more upon Frozenrain. As he spoke, it was obvious his voice had adopted a very serious tone, dipped in the slightest bit of concern. "If such were the case, and you were to admit a commonality shared by us, I'm afraid I would have to question your choice in toms." There was a slight pause, but something about him indicated that he wasn't finished speaking just yet. "Should you not be interested in younger toms, closer to your age?" If you listened closely, you might just pick up on the slight heaviness of his tone, weighed by a sadness.

"If such were the case, and you were to admit a commonality shared by us, I'm afraid I would have to question your choice in toms." [...] "Should you not be interested in younger toms, closer to your age?"
At this comment, Frozenrain rolled her eyes, fixating her gaze upon the tom-cat, all the while, attempting to match his seriousness with her own element of it. “Closer to my age? I don't consider a cat 'too old for me' until they're no longer able to tend to their warrior duties and must reside in the elder's den.” It was true, too. Frozenrain had, by no means, ever considered Hawkwing to be an old cat. Sure, he was older than Frozenrain was. But, not nearly so old as to force her to believe any relationship between them was inappropriate. “You don't fall asleep in the comfort of the elder's den at night, do you, Hawkwing?” Her head tilted to the side to further imply her questioning tone, a teasing grin sprouting across her white furred jaw.
She stood from her seated stance, covering the distance between the duo of StoneClan felines so that she was able to be face-to-face with the deputy. She blinked warm, thoughtful eyes up at Hawkwing, establishing a firm eye contact within the depths of his golden gaze. Drawing her gaze away, she lightly prodded the base of his shoulder with the tip of her muzzle, tail swaying gently behind her slender frame as a sign of her contentedness. “My choice in toms never fails to go through careful consideration. So, there is no reason to cloud your thoughts with doubt.”
She smirked, though more to herself than Hawkwing. The gesture was able to go by unnoticed by the deputy, for, she forced the grin off of her expression in time with her drawing away from his shoulder to glance into his eyes once again in wait for his answer.

Amber eyes watched the she-cat with a curiosity that glimmered in his gaze. This she-cat never ceased to catch him off guard, it seems. He held his tongue, trying to figure out what it was he would reply to that. Perhaps the StoneClan deputy had been putting too much thought into his age. He certainly wasn't the oldest cat in StoneClan. It had probably been the title of senior warrior that had made him think such a thing. He blinked at Frozenrain as she moved forward, pressing her nose to his shoulder. His sand colored ears pricked forward at this gesture, and he found himself gently tapping her shoulder with his own nose, seconds before she pulled away.
He looked downwards slightly, meeting her gaze once more. There was a slight silence that stretched between them before a wicked look flashed in his eyes. "I'll have you know, the elder's den is very comfortable, and I enjoy the rest I obtain while there." In truth, he had no idea if such was the case. He quite obviously had a nest in the warrior's den, near the entrance. He volunteered to take that spot, knowing it would be colder in Leafbare, but he didn't mind. It wasn't easy to miss his large figure when you walked into the den.
He flicked his tail, catching her chin with it slightly as he blinked down at her. "I trust your judgment, but I would like for you to think about it a little longer." His sandy tail lingered there for a moment before pulling away as he rose to his paws. "For the time being, I suggest we finish up this hunt. You might be in the clear with your mouse, but I'm not." He told her, gaze warm as he began to move further into the woods.
Could this really work..?

Her baby blue eyes matched the gaze of the StoneClan deputy as he tilted his head downward to glance at her, his tail lightly swishing forward and catching her white furred chin. "I trust your judgment, but I would like for you to think about it a little longer." Her eyes narrowed, though, she didn't verbally question his comment. If he wanted her to take some extra time and consider whether or not she was truly interested in Hawkwing, she would do so. However, she didn't think it was possible for her to change her mind. Frozenrain was, in truth, simply stubborn like that.
“If that is what you want, then fine. I will think about it.” She mewed in response, pivoting to follow his direction taken into the foliage. “I'll have you know, though, I'm not one to change my mind.” She smirked lightly, blinking warm eyes in the direction of the light furred tom-cat.
Pausing, she allowed herself to greedily inhale a portion of the air in search of any other traces of prey. Frozenrain didn't believe Hawkwing was in need of her assistance to track down his own piece of fresh kill, however, she was offering it regardless. The surrounding scents were faint; likely due to the fact she had been recently hunting in this general area. However, small traces of prey could be detected to the right, though it would perhaps be in need of a few minutes of decently paced travel to stumble upon anything.
The tabby patterned warrior immediately found her paws angling in the general direction out of instinct, though, she halted her onward progressing movements abruptly in favour of glancing over lithe shoulder blades toward her hunting companion. She didn't announce her findings, believing Hawkwing could figure it out just as easily as she could say it.
Flashing him a delicate smile upon meeting his warm gaze, she twisted her attention frontwards and pushed forward into the tangles of prickled foliage.

The sandy tom dropped low into a crouch as his nose picked up on the scent of a squirrel. His movements were surprisingly fluid for a tom his size, and although he wasn't as small as some in a crouch (which made sense, due to his obviously larger size), the crouch was still an effective one, with his weight evenly distributed amongst his four paws. His tail immobilized itself, staying low to the ground as he slowly crept forward, ears and eyes alert for signs of the squirrel. Finally, it came into view, atop a tree stump, nibbling on some sort of food it had managed to find. He kept himself calm and steady as he readied himself. After making sure the squirrel was still busy with eating, the StoneClan deputy pounced, landing squarely atop the stump.
His paws trapped the squirrel under their massive size long enough for him to deliver a killing bite to the squirrel's neck. He picked up the prey, thanking StarClan for his catch, before returning to where he'd left Frozenrain. His large paws moved the earth near where she had buried her catch, and once a hole large enough for his squirrel appeared, he dropped it in, shuffling the dirt and muddied snow back over his kill. Once finished, he straightened, turning towards Frozenrain. He purred at her, giving her a coy grin and a playful nudge, before purring out a sentence. "Well, Miss Frozenrain, shall we continue our hunt?"
