[style=float: left; background: url(http://i56.tinypic.com/jqjdld.jpg); height: 300px; width: 320px; overflow: auto; font: 10px Georgia; color: #1c191a; text-align: justify; padding: 10px;]From the edges of Stoneclan camp emerged the gray-and-white frame of Frozenrain, a small mouse dangling from her clamped jaws coated in a thin layer of blood from the kill. Proudly, the she-cat glided her way to the prey pile, allowing the lifeless mammal to fall from the grip of her powerful jaws and into the pile with the rest. Her small black nose wrinkled with an inhalation of air, analytical skills kicking in while the thought of Badgerpaw was on her mind. It wouldn't hurt to squeeze in some extra training with the ruddy-furred tom. However, her search was cut short by a familiar face still in need of her congratulations. Hawkwing. Badgerpaw could wait.
The tabby patterned feline pivoted gracefully, eloquent strides advancing across the terrain of Stoneclan with a ghostly precision. “Greetings, Hawkwing.” Her tone was pleasant, executed in the usual lightness that could be expected from a she-cat with passion for the arts of utmost elegance and properness. Settling herself into a relaxed, seated position, her tail lightly layed itself across white furred paws angled in the newly announced deputy's direction. Occasionally, the tip twitched to further imply her jovial greeting. Pale blue irises intently fixated on the features of Hawkwing's facial structure as she addressed him.
Frozenrain dipped her head for a moment's time, blinking thoughtfully at the light brown tom-cat. “I don't believe I've gotten the chance to congratulate you on your newly found position.” Fixing her posture, the she-cat's warm gaze once again laced across Hawkwing's own green. Gray tipped ears pinned forward, a smirk dancing across the outlining of the she-cat's white jaw. “So, congratulations. I'm sure you'll serve Stoneclan well.” Briefly, Frozenrain nodded. As if required to assure her own words as true. It wasn't long before her mind wandered to previous memories of Falconleap. There was nothing in the entire forest that could possibly turn Frozenrain's blood hot, other than traitorism of one's clan. Although, the more genuine side of Frozenrain found a way to understand Falconleap's love for another... it still wasn't enough for her to possibly experience sympathy in any way, shape or form for the former deputy of Stoneclan. She had betrayed Fallingstar, she had betrayed Stoneclan. Now, she was nothing more than a figure of Stoneclan's history.
Not even the love of Frozenrain's life could ever drive her away from the clan that had the entirety of her loyalty. Mostly, because she'd never so mindlessly allow herself to fall for the looks, or personality of a cat outside of Stoneclan. How could Falconleap have been so utterly mouse-brained? Hopefully, Hawkwing had more common sense – and loyalties – to his clan than Falconleap had.

The sandy brown tom stretched slightly, his large paws shifting a little nervously. He wasn't afraid to admit that he was indeed nervous. He was the newly named deputy of StoneClan, and quite frankly, he had little to no clue just what he was doing. He'd sent a patrol off not too long ago; his mind was still confused by the fact that they just listened to him. Not as they used to. Sure, not long ago, he'd been a fairly well respected senior warrior of StoneClan. His opinion was often asked, or taken into consideration. But now... Now they did as he told them. He found it eerie and a little disturbing. He only hoped that this didn't change their opinion of him. He was still the Hawkwing that he'd always been. Now... Now he simply had a fancy title to wave over his head. Or crumple up in a ball and scoot aside, pretending it wasn't there.
The tom blinked his amber eyes, deciding he'd simply leave the title be as it was. There was no need to do anything with it. He would simply strive to fulfill what was expected of him. His sandy tail flicked again as he considered what he should do now. It seemed to him as though everyone was busy but him. He noticed Frozenrain, a young warrioress, return with a mouse in her jaws. Good, StoneClan needed all the prey they could get. He continued glancing around the rather empty looking camp, frowning slightly. Had he pushed everyone out of camp? He didn't think so... Perhaps they were simply all busy. The large tom shrugged his broad shoulders, preparing to head off somewhere. Perhaps the Sandy Plateau...
The sound of paw steps caught his attention and he glanced over his shoulder, ears following the sound. He noticed the she-cat he'd spotted earlier heading his way. He blinked, offering her a smile as she pulled to a stop before him. He turned to face her, sitting down as she had, his sand-hued tail wrapping around his slightly lighter paws. “Greetings, Hawkwing.” He bowed his head to her as she spoke, before he spoke up slightly. "And to you, Frozenrain." His voice was quite deep, a rumbling that could easily be as soothing as a gentle rainfall or as threatening as the crack of thunder. Today, it was the former.
“I don't believe I've gotten the chance to congratulate you on your newly found position.” He chuckled softly, knowing exactly where this was going. Still, he was a polite tom, and never could think of interrupting a she-cat exchanging kind words, so he let her finish. “So, congratulations. I'm sure you'll serve Stoneclan well.” His ear flicked slightly as he nodded his head to her, a sign of acknowledgement. "I thank you for your kind words, Frozenrain. I still have no idea what I am doing, I simply pray that StarClan will show me the way." He chuckled again before continuing. "Save for my close friends and apprentice, StoneClan is the only thing I have left. They are my family now, and I shall serve it to the best of my ability, I can assure you of that much. And should I fail.. You have permission to give me a good smack on the nose."
He grinned at her, humour sparking in his eyes. He could look so serious, but at times like this, he looked moons younger, closer to 30 moons than the near 50 moons he was now. "I should congratulate you for the prey you caught. StoneClan could use some food, so I'm glad to see you were able to find something. Every bite counts!" He breathed the cool air, feeling it seep into his fur as he sat. His breath unfurled in a puff of steam, billowing around him slightly as it faded. "StarClan forgive my slip of manners. How are you on this cold Leafbare day, Frozenrain?"
Oh Hawkwing, ever the gentleman.

[style=float: left; background: url(http://i56.tinypic.com/jqjdld.jpg); height: 300px; width: 320px; overflow: auto; font: 10px Georgia; color: #1c191a; text-align: justify; padding: 10px;]Hawkwing's response wasn't only what Frozenrain was hoping to hear from the tom-cat, but managing to exceed the expectations she had. Gray-and-white ears pulling forward with a newly inhabited curiosity toward the Stoneclan deputy, she offered a delicate smirk, contemplating the genuine, humble radiation of the light-furred feline. “And should I fail.. You have permission to give me a good smack on the nose." Recognizing the joke for being humorous as likely intended, the tabby she-cat chuckled lightly, a nudge with all-the-most friendly intentions being offered to the tom's shoulder nearest Frozenrain. “I see no reason to believe you'll do anything less than surpass everyone's expectations.”
At mention of the mouse she had moment's earlier arrived in camp with, the she-cat performed a shoulder-check in hopes of locating the petite-sized mammal amongst the rest of prey in the nearby pile. At the praise, her tail tip twitched with a spark of appreciation, returning her vibrantly gentle gaze of pale blue pigmentation to the face of Hawkwing. “Although appreciated, it is nothing to congratulate. I'm happy to provide for my clan in these... darkest leafbare hours. I refused to return empty-pawed, no matter how many hours it'd take.” Allowing her tail to freely brush across the light snow coating the Stoneclan terrain, she remained relatively deep in thought before pondering further response upon the topic. “As much as it would have been nice to locate a more... largely sized meal, a mouse is satisfactory in times where prey is scarce.”
As Hawkwing commented on Starclan forgiving him for poor manners, she couldn't help but smirk. Mannerism? One of his problems? There likely wasn't a cat in the entire forest that appreciated chivalry and proper manners to the same extent as Frozenrain. Any tom that was to even consider glancing her way with a trace of affection could forget about it, in the chance they didn't know how to charm a she-cat. And as for Hawkwing, she didn't consider poor manners to be something the light-furred tom-cat had to fret over. If to analyze manners alone, she'd give the new Stoneclan deputy a marvelous ranking. “Oh please, Hawkwing, your manners are perfectly in check.” A glaze of delight formed within Frozenrain's ghostly pale irises, paws shuffling neatly in the thin layer of cold snow. “Though since you ask: not even the harshness of leafbare has been able to dampen my spirits.” A smile laced across the she-cat's jaw, a twinkle of pride swelling in her mesmerizing gaze. She took her duties as a warrior incredibly seriously: constantly hunting, patrolling borders to assure safety, and not to mention often including herself in various friendly exchanges of words with her fellow clan mates, much like she was currently doing with Hawkwing. There wasn't even a hint of lie in Frozenrain's words. It was rare to see a less-appealing change in the weather as enough to cause her to hibernate. “What about you, Hawkwing? May I ask, how have you been this cold, leafbare day?”

Amber eyes watched the she-cat as she spoke in response that what he had previously said. “Oh please, Hawkwing, your manners are perfectly in check.” With dip of his head, he thanked her for her kind words, attentive as she continued. “Though since you ask: not even the harshness of leafbare has been able to dampen my spirits.” Light brown ears pricked forward at this comment, eyes flashing slightly. He was glad to hear that someone was doing well. He wondered just what it was that had her in such good spirits. He smiled back at her, a soft purr acknowledging her seemingly happy air.
“What about you, Hawkwing? May I ask, how have you been this cold, leafbare day?” At this question, the large tabby had to pause and think. He frowned slightly, one paw lifting from the ground as he glanced up at the sky. Slowly, he lowered his gaze, back to the she-cat before him. “Well… In truth, Frozenrain, today has been a day I never expected to live. I’ve been chosen to be deputy of this Clan, so I can’t really say anything other than I’ve been fantastic, can I?” The large tom chuckled, his tail swishing across the ground. “I can’t count how many times I’ve looked up towards StarClan today. I honestly cannot believe I’m not dreaming. However, I do believe this is reality, as I do not think my dreams or nightmares would be able to recreate the rather… Mesmerizing qualities of your eyes, Frozenrain.”
His gaze was friendly as he blinked at her. He couldn’t think of very many conversations he’d had like this one, with a cat other than Eagletalon. It was nice to be able to talk to others. It was true that others spoke to him, but it was usually either to learn something new, or they had a question for him. And now, being named deputy… He felt as though the normal conversations he would be a part of would diminish more and more. “But yes, to answer your question, I’m in quite high spirits today as well. I simply hope I’ll be able to get out to do some hunting or patrolling later today. So far, setting up those patrols has taken most of my time.”

The thin she-cat - this due to the lack of food consumption that leafbare had brought - sported a smile that beamed pleasantly, her pale blue irises unblinking as they peered deeply into the depths of Hawkwing's own as he spoke. "However, I do believe this is reality, as I do not think my dreams or nightmares would be able to recreate the rather… Mesmerizing qualities of your eyes, Frozenrain.” Frozenrain's tabby patterned ears twitched, as if required she further process his words to indeed prove they had indeed been spoken. For a moment, her entire figure remained still, this due to an element of surprise that had caused her muscles to refrain from visible movement.
It wasn't that Frozenrain wasn't appreciative of compliments when they were offered. However, she simply hadn't expected to receive one. Giving her gray-and-white head a quick shake, this being all it took to return to the state of reality: she chuckled softly, her tail lightly brushing against the tip of Hawkwing's own large paws placed nearby her own. "Aren't you quite the charmer, Hawkwing." Arising to her paws, the she-cat protruded her neck to draw nearer to the lightly furred deputy. Briefly, her small black nose made contact with the side of Hawkwing's jaw, her salmon hued tongue exiting its chamber to spare a gentle lick across a small portion of the tom-cat's face. Frozenrain wasn't trying to come across as openly flirtatious, especially since this was merely a friendly exchange of words, or at least, it had started as so. It was simply the fact that compliments didn't sweep passed with a mere 'thank you' in return. She was far more expressive of emotions, including the emotion of appreciation, then majority of the fellow forest felines.
The Stoneclan warrior drew away, glancing thoughtfully at Hawkwing. Patrols? Hunting? "If you do decide to do some hunting or patrolling, I'm a shout away. It'd be a pleasure to offer my assistance, in any way."
(I believe this would be a good time for Umberpaw to come in. Either, after your next post, or, right now. xD).

U M B E R P A W Dreamless nights were always the most disappointing, Umberpaw found. True, he knew that most dreams weren’t sent by StarClan, and every night he grew more and more unsure that StarClan and SilverPelt were related, but it was always strange to curl up and fall asleep one moment and wake up the next without a moment inbetween. With a yawn, the black and white tom stepped out of the empty apprentices’ den. He was a bit surprised to see the sun so high up; not that he woke up so late (stargazing had lasted longer than usual last night, but it wasn’t uncommon for him to sleep through the morning job delegations), but usually his mentor woke him before the sun got too high…
A glance around the camp revealed that Hawkwing was still in camp, although he was talking to another warrior whom Umberpaw couldn’t quite remember. Coldcloud? Snowsky? Icehail? Ah well. The apprentice walked over to his mentor and head-butted the sandy-colored tom in the flank as a typical greeting by the curled-eared cat. “What are we doing today?” he asked in his typical soft voice. A few moons ago, Umberpaw would have asked why Hawkwing didn’t wake him up, but the ten-moon-old cat learned by now not to ask questions like that.
Olive green eyes turned to look at the she-cat with his mentor. “Will… um… Frostfur be joining us?” Was that her name? That wasn’t it, was it? Or was it? Frost sounded right… or at least close enough. Frostcloud?

The sand colored tom’s amber eyes blinked at Frozenrain evenly, the large tom not seeming even the slightest bit put off by her touch. He simply smiled at her as she mentioned her assistance was open. He would probably take her up on that offer. StoneClan could use all the healthy cats they could to catch prey and patrol the borders.
“I do plan on going out on a bit of a hunt. I know that you’ve just come back from hunting, but I’d be honored if you would lend your assistance.” Before the large tom could say anymore, something butted his flank. His large frame shifted slightly from the unexpected weight, but he was certainly more stable than some of the other cats in the camp. He blinked, glancing to the side and seeing his apprentice, Umberpaw, moments before the young tom spoke. He readjusted his weight, nodding his head to Umberpaw.
“Good morning, Umberpaw, I’m glad you could join us. We were discussing going out on a small hunting trip.” He glanced at Frozenrain, his eyes shining with a humoristic glint, before blinking at his apprentice. Frostfur? “Umberpaw, do you really think a name such as Frostfur would fit a she-cat like this one? If you ask me, Frostfur is simply too… Ordinary. As for your question however… Frozenrain was going to accompany me.” He turned his gaze to the she-cat once more, tipping his head slightly. “Do you mind if my apprentice, Umberpaw, joins us today, Frostfur?” He grinned at her, putting emphasis on the incorrect name. Still, he used his tail to flick his apprentice gently, a silent sign to let him know he was only teasing him.

Her jaws parted in means of acceptance, however, a youthful black-and-white body nudging at the flank of the Stoneclan deputy caused Frozenrain to halt and glance downward.
She recognized the apprentice as Umberpaw, his mentor being none other than the light brown tom-cat Frozenrain had been speaking with up until this moment. Frostfur. Her ear tip twitched at the name's mention, a brief puzzlement invading the she-cat's mind toward whether or not Umberpaw believed Frostfur to be her warrior name. Her gaze narrowed, though not sharply. She was about to speak upon her own behalf, perhaps, even introducing herself to the young tom since he didn't seem familiar with her true identification. Although, Hawkwing seemed to beat her to the task.
As the light furred deputy addressed the she-cat, her gaze at last lifted from the black-and-white figure of Umberpaw. “Do you mind if my apprentice, Umberpaw, joins us today, Frostfur?” She chuckled softly, rolling her eyes at the tom-cat's mention of the improper name. "I don't see it presenting an issue. It'll be a good opportunity to help Umberpaw further his knowledge on hunting."
Frozenrain approached Umberpaw with flawless steps, her gray-and-white tail lightly swishing against the side of the young tom-cat. "No need to worry about the mix-up. You were close." It was clear she was addressing Umberpaw on the topic due to the fact Hawkwing had been teasing him for mixing it up in the first place. Her neck lowered to be more level with Umberpaw's height, whispering into the apprentice's ears, though, not necessarily at a volume so low that Hawkwing wouldn't be able to detect it. "Maybe you've got to show him up in hunting today for some revenge, hm?" Turning toward the deputy, she dipped her head as a sign of politeness, acting as if she hadn't just plotted for the apprentice to show him up in the hunting trip soon planned to unfold.

U M B E R P A W Olive eyes blinked; he was surprised Hawkwing didn’t scold him for sleeping in. Probably because the-cat-whose-name-he-couldn’t-remember was there? A quick glance at her showed she was probably closer to his age than his mentor’s, but his mentor was pretty old (a senior warrior), so that wasn’t surprising. Hunting trip? Excellent; Umberpaw was quite the hunter. Fighter, not so much, but he figured the clan needed food more than fights now. Actually, it needed water, but that wasn’t something he could catch.
The young tom stared at his mentor as though the older cat had grown a second head or a fifth leg. What was wrong with the name Frostfur? And what was wrong with Hawkwing? Umberpaw gave Hawkwing a look of ‘You Are Being Weird’ before looking over to the cat in question, to see if she had noticed. Apparently, she hadn’t. Wait, if her name is Frozenrain, why was he… Oh, right. Mocking him. Umberpaw barely resisted swiping at his mentor’s twitching tail, but he managed to settle with a tail-flick of his own.
Further his knowledge? His knowledge was already quite far, but perhaps this younger warrior knew things his mentor didn’t teach him? That was an exciting thought. Ears perked towards Frostrain with new interest as the warrior walked up to him. “Thanks,” Umberpaw mewed softly. Other cats always seemed to get offended when he called them the wrong name; it was nice that she didn’t mind. His tail flicked happily when she joked about him showing up Hawkwing today. “Lately, I’ve already been~” the tom purred happily. True, that only meant that he caught more prey half the time, and often he just got lucky, but still it was a nice feeling.

The large StoneClan deputy's ears pricked at Frozenrain's slightly lowered voice. He was perfectly able to hear her words, and grinned at them, shaking his head. He listened calmly as Umberpaw spoke, tail flicking as he remained silent. After a moment's pause, amber eyes considering them both, the huge sandy-brown tom rose to his paws with a chuckle. "I can excuse you, Umberpaw, as you are still young. But you, miss Frozenrain?" He shook his head, face dead pan, but eyes shining playfully. "I thought you knew better than to hand your enemy your plan. Would you really explain to a mouse that you were hunting them?"
His voice was serious, but he ended it with a chuckle, showing that we was only playing around. He lowered himself slightly in a stretch, making a soft noise of contentment as his muscles loosened slightly. He straightened, considering them once more. "Come now, let's get going, so that you two may continue your secret plotting in a more... Suited environment, hm?" He turned, his tail snaking from one side to the other as he strode towards the entrance to the camp. Just before slipping out, the larger tom glanced behind him again, an obvious, mischievous glint now in his eyes.
"I challenge each of you to catch as much prey, or more than I do by the time this is patrol is finished. Should you fail to do so... There will be consequences. Say... Oh I don't know... Serve my every beck and call." He grinned at them before giving a mighty bound and disappearing through the entrance, letting them scrabble to catch up.

"Would you really explain to a mouse that you were hunting them?" Frozenrain's tail slashed, a surge of obligation to defend herself traveling through the entirety of her slender frame as her pale blue eyes pierced directly into the depths of Hawkwing's own. "Apologies, sir Hawkwing. Forgive my considerate behavior meant only to assure you had a chance of keeping up." If Hawkwing was allowed to dabble in this art of sarcastic, yet good-natured mockery, Frozenrain considered joining in on the fun herself.
"Come now, let's get going, so that you two may continue your secret plotting in a more... Suited environment, hm?" The gray-and-white furred warrior smirked, an obvious attempt at matching the trait of mischief glistening in Hawkwing's eyes. "What a brilliant idea."
The she-cat's ears perked as Hawkwing spoke of some kind of hunting challenge. Catch more prey than him? Serve his every beck and call if unable to do so? Frozenrain wasn't the type to turn down a challenge, especially not after some of the sarcastic comments she'd heard from Hawkwing. And even as the tom-cat bounded into the forest to begin, Frozenrain - instead of immediately following like a crazed cat on the hunt - glanced over her shoulders to where the black-and-white apprentice of Hawkwing stood. Gesturing lightly with her head for the youthful tom to follow, she slithered into the forest on the trail recently taken by Hawkwing.
Although a chance at winning this challenge and proving to Hawkwing she wasn't one to be easily challenged... Umberpaw had also been addressed, which meant, this challenge at catching more prey was also intended for the apprentice. She didn't doubt that Umberpaw's knowledge on hunting hadn't been greatly improved since he began training with Hawkwing. But surely, if he needed assistance with his tactics, Frozenrain would be at his aid if Hawkwing was elsewhere in an attempt to win the challenge.

U M B E R P A W The apprentice blinked once again in mild confusion when Hawkwing teased Frozenrain for ‘telling the enemy the plan’. Hawkwing wasn’t the enemy here, and neither was Frozenrain… were they? It was just a hunt; the only enemies there would be if RainClan or LightningClan tried crossing the clan border. He really hoped they didn’t. His mentor’s chuckle helped dissuade those fears, but left the tom more confused than ever. Perhaps if he waited long enough, or once the two separated, they would start talking sense instead of whatever they were talking now. They’re as bad as Volepaw.
Umberpaw didn’t attempt to interrupt the warriors and their banter or whatever it was, but he followed them out of camp readily enough. His curled-back ears focused on Hawkwing as his mentor issued the hunting challenge. ‘Each of us to catch as much prey as him…’ Wait, did that mean that they were all hunting separately or they were hunting together but had to catch twice the prey? Before he could ask for clarification, his mentor bounded away, leaving Umberpaw with Frostrain. The warrior took the lead and the apprentice readily followed, although he did have to ask, “Does Hawkwing mean we together have to catch more prey than he does, or that we separately need to catch more prey?” Umberpaw was hoping together, as he was curious about this cat’s hunting techniques and how they compared and contrasted with those he both learned from Hawkwing and learned by himself, but he wasn’t sure about her choice to follow Hawkwing’s trail. Wouldn’t we have better luck in an area he’s not covering?

The StoneClan deputy pushed forward, ears pricked and feeling for the traces of the wind. He noted it's direction and used it to his advantage. He made a large circle, being careful to pass through some heavily scented foliage, which would dull his scent a little bit. His goal here was to circle back to Frozenrain and Umberpaw, hopefully undetected. He would not only be testing his own skills, but their's too. He was interested to see how long it would take for them to figure out he was watching them. He suspected it would not take Frozenrain all too long, she was well trained he was sure. It was Umberpaw's skill set he was looking to test. After all, as much as he would like to simply enjoy himself today, he had duty to fulfill as a mentor.
The sandy brown tom suddenly felt the weight on his shoulders. He gave a silent sigh, remembering he was no ordinary warrior anymore. As deputy of StoneClan, he would have more responsibilities towards the Clan. He just hoped he would still have his times to enjoy himself. He would hate to see this get between his friendship with Eagletalon. The other tom might have been younger than him, but Hawkwing was well aware of just how much Hawkwing depended on him. Even if the younger tom wasn't aware of it, Eagletalon helped Hawkwing clamber out of the pits that threatened to swallow him up, the pits created by the loss of every family member he had ever had.
Now was not the time for mourning. Eagletalon wasn't nearby, so Hawkwing had to take control this time, and pull himself out before he got in too deep. With a bound, he continued, making sure his movements were quiet as he slowly caught up with them, picking out their pelts amongst the foliage.
And now, to watch and understand.

Frozenrain traveled through the bushes with ease, her lithe frame radiating a meticulous edge with each powerful stride of her limbs. Occasionally, her gray-white furred head twisted over lean shoulder blades to assure Umberpaw was nearby. As much as her attention was fully fixated upon their hunting expedition, she wasn't about to allow herself to completely forget about the presence of Hawkwing's apprentice. Her baby blue eyes met with Umberpaw's own, flashing the apprentice a warm grin.
The she-cat was about to fixate her attention frontwards again, before the sound of Umberpaw's voice was detected in her ears. “Does Hawkwing mean we together have to catch more prey than he does, or that we separately need to catch more prey?” She thought about it for a second, attempting to familiarize herself with Hawkwing's words before they had departed. "From what I can recall, we're to both catch as much, or more as Hawkwing, separately. I'm not too worried about it, though. His chances of catching prey are just as good, or bad, as ours." The StoneClan warrior chuckled softly, stifling it after a few short seconds so that if prey was near, her laughter would not alert them of their presences.
Her black nose seemed to be on a mission; constantly inhaling portions of the air, effectively analyzing for both traces of prey scents and Hawkwing. It was no secret that she was currently following the deputy's steps, a minor interest present in her intellect toward whether or not Hawkwing was devoting his entire concentration toward beating Frozenrain and Umberpaw upon catching higher numbers of prey, or had decided otherwise and was lurking. Frozenrain didn't doubt the air of seriousness that cloaked the light furred tom-cat of StoneClan, but after the conversation she had with the tom prior to this event, she was certain he knew how to lay back and enjoy himself every once in a while.
Even warriors weren't constantly dedicated to their duties. Most of the time, sure. But, they weren't all complete workaholics.
Then, the faintest scent washed over the she-cat's black nose. Her movements came to an abrupt halt, neck protruding upward as a more in depth analysis was processed. She refrained from turning her neck backward and sparing a glance into the shadows of the brambles, instead, rotating her ears backward to become more alert to surrounding noise. She wasn't about to ruin Hawkwing's little act of playing spy. A smirk formed on the she-cat's white jaw, meant for her own eyes and no other. At last, she began moving forward once again. “Smell anything, Umberpaw?” She addressed the tom-cat in a cheerful tone, tail tip swaying gently behind her frame.
Through completing her in depth examination of the air, it was not only Hawkwing's fragrance that was detected. It was closely accompanied with the faintest trace of mouse, from what Frozenrain could interpret. By requesting for Umberpaw to take a whiff as well, she was both giving him an opportunity to impress her with his capability to sense faint prey fragrances, along with perhaps revealing to himself that his mentor had peering eyes. She hoped that the multi-coloured apprentice – if able to sense Hawkwing – wouldn't immediately turn-tail and call out to the StoneClan deputy. They could have some fun with his watchful gaze, if Umberpaw was able to catch on. If not, however: the fun could always be one-sided for the time being.
The she-cat lowered her slender figure into a crouched position, progressing through the prickled foliage toward where she assumed the mouse's location would be. If she was able to successfully pinpoint its whereabouts, Umberpaw would be gifted the ability to attempt a swipe at the mammal's life. It was an opportunity for Hawkwing to see his apprentice in action, regardless of whether or not Umberpaw knew he was nearby.
(OOC: In your post, Sheep, you can probably just skip ahead to them finding the mouse, if you want Umberpaw to catch it. ^^. If not, that's fine as well!) [/b][/blockquote]

U M B E R P A W The mottled tom kept up easily with the warrior's pace, occasionally scenting the area for any prey or water. The apprentice was thirsty, but not unbearably so, not yet. Perhaps later today he would go to the sky springs to see if any of the ice had melted yet. Or, he could swallow some snow before curling up in the apprentice's den so he wouldn't get too chilled. When blue eyes looked back towards him, Umberpaw blinked his own olive eyes to show he was still paying attention, even though he hadn't sniffed any prey out yet. More prey than Hawking separately? "But we're hunting together and have a less chance to come across prey then we would separately." It didn't seem quite in their favor, but Umberpaw figured if they caught two prey and Hawkwing caught one, they would 'win'. The apprentice was of a mind that hunting was better done individually, but he was curious about how the she-cat hunted, so he didn't recommend they split up.
The instant Frostrain froze, the apprentice did as well. Did she smell something while Umberpaw was lost in thought? Apparently so, otherwise she wouldn't have asked his opinion. The tom opened his mouth to better scent the air. After a heartbeat, he picked up an a very familiar but unexpected scent: Hawkwing. His mentor must be testing him, then, and the premise of a competition was just a ruse to make him think he wasn't being watched. The experienced apprentice was no stranger to assessments, and so with a knowing tail-flick the tom shook his head. "I can't smell anything," the black-and-white tom lied, ears twitching as he tried to make them not focus on where he thought his mentor to be.
Apparently, Frostrain had smelled more than Hawkwing; the apprentice followed her as she went into a hunter's crouch and inched forward. He scented the air continuously, and finally picked up on what the she-cat had: a mouse. Umberpaw's mouth watered involuntarily, and his curled-back ears focused intently on the mouse. "Got it," he whispered quietly. Since this was his assessment, the apprentice didn't feel bad about taking over the hunt for the prey Frostrain had sniffed out first. Slowly and making sure to be light on his paws, the black-and-white cat snuck forward as he used his very functioning ears and nose to pinpoint the mouse's exact location. A few moons ago, the fact that his prey wasn't visible would have thrown the apprentice, but the moons between then and now were filled with experience hunting prey his eyes couldn't see. By the time the mouse had paused, indicating the prey had grown suspicious, Umberpaw was close enough to pounce. The tom dove into the bramble, and within ten heartbeats the black-and-white apprentice made his way out of the foliage, mouse neatly and securely in his jaws. His thick coat had protected him from most of the thorns, although one of his curled-back ears had a shallow cut the tom didn't notice yet.
