Name: Burningleaf
Age: Forty-seven moons
Gender: Tom
Clan: LightningClan
Rank: Senior Warrior
Picture:
Description: Burningleaf is a ginger tabby and white tom, long, lean, and handsome. The white consumes all four of his legs, as well as his underbelly and the last rings of his tail, before crawling up his throat and around his neck to finish off at his muzzle, creeping ever so slightly between his eyes. His eyes are wide pools of golden amber, which seem to always display his emotions, no matter how hard he tries.
He's about average in build for LightningClan cats, his body slim and agile. His legs aren't the longest, but they're proportional to his slender frame, and do their job well enough. He isn't the fastest cat, or the strongest, or even the prettiest. In fact, in all appearances, he's pretty average. But he's got heart, and that's really what counts.
Description Summary: A lean ginger and white tom with amber eyes.
Personality: Burningleaf is an openly emotional tom, as it's difficult to say you're fine while your eyes betray your sadness. At a young age, he learned it was better to tell the truth and face the repercussions than to lie and be called out for it, as he tried and failed to learn how to control what his eyes revealed. His eyes truly are the windows to his soul, as no matter what he is feeling, his eyes betray him. Whether it be joy, sadness, anger, love, or pride, his eyes will show it. He has tried to prevent his emotions from being so clear, but all of his numerous efforts have failed. As such, he has learned to cope with the obviousness, learning to embrace the way he feels and stay true to himself. He no longer tries to hide behind a mask, content to just lay everything down on the table had have everything perfectly clear. Some say this makes him a stronger warrior, others feel it makes him weak.
Burningleaf doesn't mind, though, what others think of him, as he's desensitized himself to their once-painful words. He's still a sensitive, caring creature, yes, but the harsh opinions of others no longer get to him. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and his emotions run down to his core. However, he is stronger because of it, as he isn't afraid by what he feels. He tries to encourage others to open up, as well, as he believes bottling up emotions leads to more pain, as he's experienced it himself.
History: Burningkit was born to a litter of five, to two loyal LightningClan warriors. He grew in a happy family just like any other kit, young and mischievous. He was always the more emotional of his litter, even moreso than his sisters. It was always obvious what he was feeling, and what he was thinking wasn't too hard to see, either. He was more easily hurt than his siblings, but he was always the first to try to make someone else happy.
Burningpaw was made an apprentice alongside his siblings, and there they went on to their individual training. His mentor, Willowsong, adored him for his open nature, but her mate, Venomspirit, whom also had an apprentice, thought he was weak for it. Since both cats had an apprentice, they usually trained them together, taking turns training the pair of young cats. Venomspirit was unusually cruel to his mate's apprentice, and attempted to force him to hid his true emotions. Burningpaw couldn't, though, and it only angered Venomspirit more. However, Venomspirit's apprentice, Flashpaw, helped soften the torment Burningpaw suffered, at times even placing himself between his mentor and his friend. Willowsong did little to help, as she was foolish, and in her eyes her mate could do no wrong.
So, as they grew as apprentices, Burningpaw and Flashpaw grew ever closer, until finally Burningpaw was no longer able to be hurt by Venomspirit. One session, when Venomspirit attacked him for yet again wearing his heart on his sleeve, Burningpaw turned that anger back at Venomspirit, finally confident enough in who he was to stand up to the cruel warrior. Venomspirit was shocked, but when he attacked his mate's apprentice, Burningpaw was ready, as was Flashpaw. The two apprentices fought back against the tom, while Willowsong watched in shock. Together, Burningpaw and Flashpaw were able to defeat Venomspirit. Venomspirit, angry that he had been bested by a pair of apprentices, and angry that Willowsong had done nothing to help him, had stormed off.
For the rest of their training, Venomsong refused to train Flashpaw with Burningpaw and Willowsong, but the apprentices remained close. It wasn't long after this incident that they were made warriors, Burningleaf and Flashbrook. They spent their vigil in silence together and found nests in the warrior's den near to each other the next morning.
As they aged, their friendship grew, and Burningleaf began finding it difficult to look his friend in the eye, afraid of what Flashbrook would see there. Burningleaf began to fall hard for his friend, and his biggest fear wasn't what the Clan would think, but that Flashbrook wouldn't feel the same. One night, returning home from a Gathering, Burningleaf worried, sensing Flashbrook was hiding something. The ginger and white tom pulled his friend aside, asking him what was wrong. Flashbrook replied, as most cats would, with a simple 'nothing'. Burningleaf, of course, didn't believe him, but he didn't push it. Instead, he just continued back to LightningClan's camp, his fur brushing Flashbrook's.
A few weeks later, Burningleaf woke with a chill in his stomach. He noticed Flashbrook's nest empty, and so went in search of him. He picked up a faint scent trail outside of camp, leading toward StarClan's Claws. Puzzled, Burningleaf followed the trail, and to this day, regrets it. When he got there, he saw his friend, Flashbrook, with a she-cat from another Clan. Burningleaf didn't stay long, but what he saw convinced him that the pair he saw within the circle of stones were more than just friends from two different Clans. Heartbroken, Burningleaf raced back to camp, getting there long before his friend.
He didn't have a chance to talk to Flashbrook alone for a few days. But when Flashbrook came from a hunting patrol one evening, Burningleaf pulled him aside and asked him to join him for a walk, since they hadn't really connected in a while. Flashbrook agreed, and once they were far enough away from the camp, Burningleaf brought up what he had seen. Flashbrook's first response was anger. As Flashbrook verbally assaulted his friend, Burningleaf just stared at his paws. When Flashbrook fell silent, Burningleaf retaliated, his original sadness giving way to an anger of his own. Then, both cats broke, and as they shared a moment alone, a mutual enemy came to attack. During the attack, Venomspirit chased them into the mountains, and Burningleaf was the only one of the three to return to LightningClan.
While still grieving over the loss of his dearest friend, Burningleaf carried on with his life, taking on his first and second apprentices. Now, at fourty-seven moons, he still wakes up every morning and grieves over Flashbrook's memory, before heading out to serve his Clan.

"Hey, Flashbrook. Do you want to go for a walk?" The ginger and white tom's voice was slightly shaky, but if his friend noticed it, he made no sign. Flashbrook smiled at his friend and nodded, rising to head out of the camp.
Burningleaf swallowed hard and followed, pondering what he would say. Once out of the camp, the lifelong friends walked silently side by side, until they came to the affectionately named star field. The sun had set shortly before, locking the friends in a quiet darkness. As the fireflies began to emerge, Burningleaf stopped and turned to face Flashbrook.
"So, Flashbrook." The young warrior swallowed and fixed his gaze on his paws. "Who is she?"
Flashbrook stared at him, mouth agape, as realization sank in. The hint of that familiar scent had not been his imagination! "What does it matter to you?"
Burningleaf had expected Flashbrook to be angry, but he hadn't expected the guarded response of his friend. "I.. well, I care about you. And I don't want you to get in trouble over a cross-Clan relationship."
Flashbrook snorted. "Well, don't worry. I can take care of myself, you know. Unlike you when you were an apprentice. Heh. So damn weak. You couldn't even stand up for yourself! Pathetic."
Burningleaf's broken heart shattered. Though he had long ago steeled himself against the opinions of others, this was different. Flashbrook's words cut deep, and it was all he could do to suppress a yowl of agony that threatened to release. Burningleaf lifted his amber eyes to Flashbrook's, his gaze a mixture of love, sorrow, and agony. "Is that all I am to you? Pathetic? And here I thought you protected me because you cared."
Flashbrook's gaze remained unreadable. "Of course I cared. I didn't want to watch a cat die at the hands of my mentor." His tail flicked behind him in irritation.
"So, it was only for selfish reasons, then." Burningleaf turned away as he spoke, his pain unbearable. He didn't walk away, though, merely turned his body so he didn't have to look at his best friend, the cat he loved, the only one able to shred his heart to bits. "You know, I became strong because of you. I learned to not be so sensitive to the opinions of others. But you.." Burningleaf sighed heavily and turned back to his friend, the agony clear in his eyes. You're the only one who could do this to me, break me down to the weak apprentice I used to be. I love you, Flashbrook. I have for a while. I had hoped we could continue to be friends, but apparently that's no longer possible. Not after the secrets. Not now that I know how it is you really feel about me." Burningleaf's pain hardened into anger and his eyes narrowed. "I was even foolish enough to indulge in the fantasies that we could actually be together. But that's just me, right? Pathetic! But of course, what do you care? Is there any real reason you continued to pretend to be my friend, to pretend to care?"
Now it was Flashbrook's turn to look away. Fireflies danced around the pair of fallen friends, lending light to the darkness consuming them. Flashbrook took a step back, gaze lowered and unreadable. "Yes, my original motive for protecting you was selfish. But.. I continued, and I really began to care. My friendship for you was never a lie. And I'm sorry. What happened between me and Freezefur was a mistake, I know that now." Flashbrook lifted his gaze to meet Burningleaf's. "But most of all, I'm sorry that I've hurt you. You really are my best friend, Burningleaf. I really am sorry."
Flashbrook stood still for a moment, before lurching forward to press his head against Burningleaf's neck. Burningleaf stood in shock for a moment before purring and returning his friend's nuzzle. The pair were interrupted, however, by a ghost from their past.
"Well, well, well, what have we here?" Flashbrook jumped back at the sound of Venomspirit's cruel voice. Flashbrook's eyes were wide with fear as he stared at his former mentor. Venomspirit smiled, a wicked, twisted shape transforming his maw. He stepped toward his former apprentice, malice in his every step.
Flashbrook backed away in fear, and Burningleaf darted in between his friend and his long-standing enemy. "Venomspirit, go away." Burningleaf's voice dripped with anger. Venomspirit merely looked down on the ginger and white tom, his gaze cold and distant.
"You're the one that caused all of this, don't you know? Now, move!" Venomspirit lashed out, catching Burningleaf off guard and flinging him to the side. As the wicked tom set his eyes onto Flashbrook, the younger tom ran. Venomspirit took off after him, leaving Burningleaf in the dirt.
Burningleaf scrambled to his paws. "Flashbrook!" His cry came out distressed, and he darted after them. Venomspirit chased after Flashbook, chasing him even out of the valley and partially into the mountains surrounding them. The three cats raced on until Flashbrook spun around to face his former mentor. He had been backed against a wall of rock on two sides, with a sheer drop on the other side, and Venomspirit blocking his only escape.
As Venomspirit darted in for the attack, Flashbrook reared up to meet him. Burningleaf scrambled up the path behind them in time to see the two cats clash. Flashbrook met Burningleaf's eyes, a sadness in his gaze that had not been there before. Then, Flashbrook managed to tilt to the side, sending both he and his former mentor tumbling over the edge.
"NO!!!" Burningleaf darted to the edge of the cliff, where Flashbrook and Venomspirit had gone over. There, lying at the bottom of a ravine some distance below, lay the still forms of his best friend and his worst enemy. He crouched there until the sun rose over the horizon, searching for any signs that Flashbrook could have survived the fall. But when the sun rose and Flashbrook still had not moved, Burningleaf rose and headed back to LightningClan, his heart heavy with all that had transpired.
