The fog was thick enough that walking the short distance from the nursery to the fresh kill pile could prove treacherous with a cat of poor eyesight. Fortunately for Pyrelight, she was no such cat, and waded through the icy fog that clung to her coat like the claws of frost spirits with ease. Her coat was an intricate blend of cinnamon and silver stripes and patches of color set upon a cream base, the nippy weather as well as genetics giving her a fluffy, full coat. She looked soft and fragile at first glance, but the only thing 'fragile' on this she-cat was her heart at that moment, the death of Warhawk still as fresh as an open wound for her.
Casting aside dark or mournful thoughts, Pyrelight called over her shoulder to the queen back in the nursery, "Do you want me to get you anything, Morningpetal?" She mewed, her tail brushing aside the fog as best as the tabby cat could. The pale she-cat back in the nursery shook her head, instead content with blinking sleepily and looking down at the collection of kittens at her side. Four were Pyrelight's - Oceankit, Emberkit, Windkit and Earthkit - and the three little ginger kittens were Morningpetal's. "No thank you," mewed back the queen, and Pyrelight gave a brief nod, her head swiveling back to face the fresh kill pile.
The she-cat almost jumped out of her fur, having just now noticed a dark gray tabby standing there in the fog. "Chillstep?" she mewed, on guard in case it was no cat she could recognize, but the fog shifted slightly, and the fur along her spine relaxed upon spotting the familiar face. Pyrelight managed a soft smile. "I almost completely missed you."

The fog hung ever so heavily upon the young tom's eyesight. He didn't have very good vision to begin with, so the fog only made it annoyingly worse. He carefully kneaded the ground with each step he took, trying to prod his way back into the camp. His jaws were clamped around his recently killed prey, merely a vole. After a few minutes of nosing around the rocks, he finally found the entrance. "Ugh, stupid fog," He mumbled to himself as he walked into the clearing. His pelt, about as grey as the fog itself, stung with the uncomfortable wet but dry feeling. Right when he had dropped his fresh-kill down, a squeal of fright rang in his ears. He perked up, his fur prickling down his spine. "Oh, I'm sorry to startle you," He responded, relaxing as he noticed the familiar she-cat sitting tail-lengths from him. "My pelt blends in with the fog, huh?" He laughed, hoping he hadn't frightened her enough to scare her away.

Nose picking up on the scent of vole, Pyrelight, with some effort, tore her gaze away from the fresh kill pile to meet Chillstep's calm gray eyes. "It really does. Hunting must be rather easy for you," she mewed, smiling in that quiet way of hers. Effortlessly picturing the gray warrior slinking through the fog to descend upon any unfortunate animal that couldn't see him coming, Pyrelight felt a pang of longing. Oh how nice it would be to hunt again!
She adored her kits. She'd die for them, but sometimes the four of them together were exhausting, with their conflicting personalities and raucous play-fights. Sometimes Pyrelight found herself wishing for the solitude that came with hunting, the patience, the stillness of the environment around her, the rough stone beneath her paws and rabbit-scent on the wind.
"The sooner new leaf gets here, the better," observed the queen, sitting and sweeping her tail around her paws, delaying taking something off the fresh kill pile until her conversation was over. Pyrelight thought it rude to sit and eat in front of someone. Not only would new leaf bring the prey back and thaw all this snow, but it would mark a time where her four offspring could advance to the rank of apprentice. She was eager to see them blossom and grow as the moons rolled past, her desire for new leaf wasn't purely selfish, after all. Pyrelight's whole life were her kits now, and that wouldn't change when she returned to the warriors' den and her babies moved off to apprenticeship.

"It comes quite in handy, in fact. Prey never see it coming." He boasted a little, although that wasn't his style. He didn't like to brag usually, but his pride got the best of him. He noticed something in the she-cat's eyes, they seemed as if to miss something, or perhaps someone. "I actually like leaf-bare, to be honest. I don't mind the cold." He meowed with a flick of his tail. "But, it's not the greatest season for kits." He murmured. The intoxicating aroma of the fresh-kill roamed into his nose. He took the vole and placed it at the queen's paws. "Here, you look hungry. Don't mind me, I'll eat later." He offered. "How are the kits?" He asked politely, keeping the conversation going.

Pyrelight dipped her head gratefully to the kind words of Chillstep, her eyes upon the younger warrior brightening at mention of her kits. It was quite possibly the easiest types of conversations she could ever have - discussing her four little ones! "They are doing well," purred Pyrelight, taking a bite from the vole, her eyes closing as she savored every mouthful. Fresh kill was scarce, and while she did feel a certain amount of guilt for eating food she hadn't hunted for herself, it was the way this Clan worked. Though if she could get Morningblossom to watch over her brood for an hour or two, she would've gladly braved the fog and the rocky terrain (the combination of which could result in quite a few clumsy mistakes) to catch her own meal.
Still, she wasn't complaining. She was simply grateful for Chillstep's kindness. Not intending to inhale the whole thing, Pyrelight forced herself to stop, the she-cat gently nudging over what was left of the vole for Chillstep to take a few bites. "Please, you can have the rest. My kits are asleep, and have already eaten."
Hoping he would accept the remainder of the skinny vole, Pyrelight went on to elaborate on his question, her tail once again sweeping around her paws. "They are all so different, especially Emberkit and Oceankit, who bump heads quite often." spoke the queen, her voice soft and gentle with fondness; "though I worry for Oceankit. He is bigger and stronger than the other three, that would not bother me so much if he was... less aggressive."
It really was troublesome. In Oceankit's case, Pyrelight regretted sharing so much about their father with him, for it had all gone to his head, and thoughts of vengeance and death to the TreeClan leader had left her first born with a dark fire in her heart she would've given anything to put out.

He sat contently, his fluffy tail wrapped around his paws. He took in everything the queen had said, listening politely and respectfully. The talk of kits wasn't unusual to him, but he could never dream of having them. They would be too much of a hassle for him, still being a young warrior with a long life ahead of him; hopefully. "That's good to hear." As she progressed to the names of her offspring, Chillstep decided to finish the rest of the vole off, not to be rude and ignore her offer. The delicious taste of prey danced on his tongue. He was starving from a long day of hunting and patrolling. It wasn't all that bad, being a queen must be tougher than what a warrior goes through. "I love their names," He complimented softly. "I think when they grow older they won't fight as much. Maybe Oceankit will lose some of his 'aggression.'" He meowed thoughtfully. "When they leave the nursery, you won't have to worry as much anymore," his voice swayed with comfort. "Then maybe we can hunt together," He murmured. "If you'd like."

"Thank you," she purred, the compliment toward the names of her brood making her feel warmth spread throughout all four paws. "Warhawk picked the names Ember and Ocean, I chose Earth and Wind. It was just luck, I guess, that we had four instead of two or three." Eyelids slipping halfway over her clear hazel irises. She was pleased to see that he had eaten the vole, her guilt lessening considerably by that small act of politeness.
The hopeful tone with which he spoke of, when talking about Oceankit had Pyrelight smile almost sadly. "That's rather optimistic of you, Chillstep. If Oceankit is anything like his father, then I fear that he is destined for the battlefield until the day he dies. It's practically in his blood." Warhawk had been reknowned for his battle prowess, the fact that he had gone 'undefeated' in battle for his entire life was a feat that had even won him a name change, from Thornfang, to Warhawk for his valor and strength. He'd been their 'golden boy', their poster child of everything a true blue warrior should've been. The last she'd heard at the rumor mill, many senior warriors and elders were all suggesting the handsome dark tabby take over as deputy once Fallingstar had run her course and Falconleap had assumed leadership.
"I would appreciate that, Chillstep. It will feel so nice to hunt again - but I might get overly distracted," she mewed with an honest sort of humor, "Not having my children right under my paws might make me worry about them even more!" a soft sigh slipped past a cream-furred muzzle, whiskers twitching. "I feel as though they are destined for greatness, though, whether I've got my eye on them or not."

"Well he seems to fit his father's description, from what you've told me." Chillstep responded. "If battle is in his blood, then there's no reason to fight it. He'll more than likely be a great fighter, and turn up to be very useful for StoneClan." He meowed, trying to look on the bright side. He didn't usually look at things very optimistically, but this was about a mother's kits, so he took a very kinder approach then his normal, aloof self. "As long as he isn't murderous or anything, he'll be fine. A strong, proud warrior. Just like his father," Chillstep murmured. "They'll be great, trust me." He purred, flicking his tail. "Especially since their your children."

Pyrelight accepted his kind words with a gracious dip of her head, her tail thumping faintly against the snow-covered earth. Though his words about Oceankit being murderous were the kind that made her pelt prickle uncomfortably, a mother's overprotective instincts taking center stage, Pyrelight was able to calm down after realizing Chillstep hadn't actually meant to offend.
"Have you gotten your own apprentice yet?" she meowed, shifting the subject to him so that she wouldn't keep talking about her own issues in her own life - it was rude to keep the conversation so one-sided. Pyrelight had never actually had an apprentice of her own, life had happened too fast for her to ever be assigned one. She'd been found by Warhawk at 16 moons, at 21 moons she'd been renamed Pyrelight, her Tribe Cat heritage forgotten. She'd spent the next 7 moons enjoying warriorhood, before becoming Warhawk's mate and motherhood took over her life roughly 4 moons ago. It was an experience she would've liked to try, Pyrelight supposed, getting the opportunity to pass on her knowledge - both tribal and what Warhawk had personally taught her - but Pyrelight was unlikely to train an apprentice until her kits were apprentices themselves.

"No, actually. I haven't quite yet." Chillstep responded. "I don't know if I could handle one yet, I'm barely a warrior myself." He chuckled, remembering his apprenticeship. Something about that thought made his fur rise. His apprentice days were not as cracked up as they were to be; and he hoped Pyrelight's kits didn't have to go through what he had. "My sister and I were pretty mischievious before we were warriors," He trailed on. "Anyways, I think being given the opportunity to train a young cat would be an interesting experience. However, I don't think I would have the patience for one, yet." He meowed, amused.

She was really comfortable curled up beside her mother. Her mother helped keep her warm and keep her safe, and feed her! the she-kit heard mews though and she woke up slowly. She yawned a big yawn before she opened her eyes and looked around the nursery. Her litter mates were still sleeping and she looked up at her mother. Her mother was talking to someone. She looked around the nursery and she saw another cat. A tom. She looks at him before she gets up quickly and jumps at him. She saw his tail then and she eyed it before she looked at her mother. She had an innocent look on her face, but then, everyone seemed to know better than that.

"Ahh, hello there," He said to the kit who had tugged on his tail. He tried not to make himself look threatening, for he had a soft spot for kits.

"You might be getting a little practice," Pyrelight mewed with a cryptic sort of humor, the she-cat having spotted her ginger daughter sneaking towards Chillstep's tail. Their eyes met, Emberkit's face awash with typical kitten innocence, oh but Pyrelight knew better. Being the kit's mother, she knew all too well how devilish her little fire-spirited daughter could be. "With patience and how well you can play with others," Pyrelight mewed, the queen trying to carefully keep her eyes trained on Chillstep without letting Emberkit know she was subtly tipping off the tom.
She didn't want Emberkit to actually surprise him, that is, though in her opinion if Chillstep didn't already know she was there, then he really was a new warrior. Emberkit wasn't exactly subtle. Adorable beyond words, yes, but subtle? Er, not quite. Maybe when she was older. When she tugged on his tail, he had spoke to her. She jumped a few inches in surprise, she did not know that he had heard her at all. She looks at her mother though and she walks over to her. She purrs lightly and rubs her head on her mothers side as she sat down and looked at Chillstep. She looked up at her mother then. Mom, what are you doing? She was curious and spirited, but there were moments when she knew that she had to stop doing something, especially when her mother was trying to counter it. Emberkit looks back at Chillstep and she moves from her mother then and drops into her messy crouch as if she was about to pounce on the young warrior.
