Doe is small in form, being quite young yet, but this slim, lithe build will prevail through adulthood as well. Her pelt bears many shades of brown, darker in color along her back legs and tail and gradually lightening in the fluff around her neck and belly. There are a few areas that have sprinkles of a charming russet - like behind her ears and above her little dark nose - where her browns appear loveliest. However, most of her coat is marred with black tabby stripes, obscuring the majority of brown shades in the lower half of her body. Her eyes seem to straddle the line between amber and green, the shade somewhat yellow-toned, but they are unmistakably green in bright sunlight.
The only manner in which her appearance deviates from her mother, Eagle, is in her coat-length, which is slightly longer and fluffier - a quality she shares with her littermate, Camellia.
+ Compassionate, Honest, Independent, Intuitive, Thorough.
NEGATIVES
- Vague, Meek, Detached, Gullible, Inattentive.
Practically anyone might seem shy when compared to a sister as charismatic and forward as Camellia, but Doe really is shy, as if to offset the bigger personality of her littermate. Though quiet and unassuming, Doe is an independent cat who thrives by herself, content going about her duties without fuss or complaint and able to predict where assistance might be needed most. She can be quite intuitive in this way, eager to forego the need for someone to ask her to do something in favor of the simple pleasure of seeing them pleased that it's already been done. This is fueled chiefly by her compassion for others, particularly her Tribemates, but she would extend the same kindness to cats outside the Tribe as well. Despite this, Doe would not call herself a natural caregiver; she finds purpose in her ability to be of service to others, but she doesn't possess the charisma to make other cats feel at ease even if she can carry on a conversation well enough. She's been known to be very inattentive, sometimes even mid-conversation, which can be somewhat frustrating for others. She's been told many times she's a bit featherbrained, a response she's most often heard after she's asked them to repeat what they've just said because she forgot to listen.
Doe is happiest when she has a task - she has unrivaled focus and is very thorough in everything she does. Though she's not arrogant or exceedingly confident, she does possess a sureness when she approaches her duties, especially when hunting. To Doe, there's a beauty in the hunt she feels only she can see sometimes, where the world narrows down to just her and her prey and nothing else matters. It's just a test of her body's capabilities and limits against that of her prey. She's missed catches several times (she's only a To-Be, after all), but the misses don't frustrate her because she knows she's still young and she hasn't yet become as strong and nimble as she needs to be. It's outside factors that bother her. She would never admit it, but she loathes the Cave-Guards that accompany Prey-Hunters. When they make a noise that scares off her prey, she breathless with anger, and a few now have endured the bewildering experience that is Doe spitting venom at the cat who spoiled her hunt. Understandably, it's difficult to reconcile this furious cat with the peaceful and complacent feline she was only five minutes before. Her anger burns hot and fast though - within minutes, she's finished fuming and becomes detached. She feels ashamed in those moments, but is too shy to attempt to apologize - she instead opts for silent apologies in the form of a fresh nest lined with the fluffiest feathers or looking after your kits for the afternoon so you can relax.
Doe sometimes avoids chatting with others, usually only when she's in the middle of something and has been known to be purposefully vague in anything she says without any kind of spite behind it - she simply wants to end the conversation as quickly as she can. She's friendly and kind, if soft-spoken and meek, but doesn't do a very good job maintaining relationships with others. She doesn't seek out the company of others and, truth be told, she could go days without talking to anyone and be perfectly fine. She is always honest and transparent with others, having no reason to lie, but often forgets that others do not owe her the same transparency she gives to them. This can make her gullible - a cat wishing to manipulate her would have no problem doing so, and would probably meet very little resistance given her meek nature.
Overall, Doe is content with her life. She knows it in her very bones that she was meant to be a Prey-Hunter, and she's good at it - as good as a To-Be can be at 11 moons. She has a positive outlook on her life, and even feels she knows exactly what the rest of it looks like. To her, it's a comfortable thing, knowing what the rest of her life has in store for her. In Doe's eyes, there's beauty in simplicity, and this is her life's philosophy.
NEURODIVERGENCY: ADHD
Unbeknownst to her, Doe has ADHD, characterized in particular by her inattentiveness and restlessness, which is usually caused by feeling understimulated. Her desire for stimulation doesn't manifest in reckless or hyperactive behavior, though - it is simply an itch that needs to be scratched, and the longer she's gone without feeling stimulated the more detached she becomes. Her mind will wander until it becomes difficult for anyone to get her to focus on something she has no interest in, as she'll try to stimulate herself with her imagination instead, losing herself in daydreams that often have no relevancy to her reality.
When she is doing something stimulating, Doe has the feeling that nothing else in the world matters and enters a state of hyperfocus, which is very common in individuals with ADHD, where she even loses all sense of things that don't have to do her primary focus. She can be quite obsessive and particular about the way she does things, and is overall very thorough of her work because she takes a great deal of personal interest and pride in it. When something breaks her focus in a negative way, like a Cave-Guard making a noise to startle her prey, it's also common for those with ADHD to become uncharacteristically angry or upset in the way she does due to emotional dysregulation.
As for my reasons for giving her ADHD, when I starting writing her personality she was giving me ADHD vibes even though that wasn't originally my intention. A few of the traits I gave her are traits I also possess, especially in the way her ADHD affects her, and I wish to be able to write a character that reflects my own experience with ADHD.
Mother: Shadow of Soaring Eagle
Father: Glory of Morning Sun
Siblings: Lone Camellia in the Sun
Extended Family:Osprey That Rides the Wind (Maternal Grandfather), Light of Rising Sun (Maternal Grandmother), Strut of Ring-Necked Rooster (Maternal Uncle), Jagged Rock Under Tree Root (Maternal Uncle), Song of Shadowed Stream (Maternal Aunt)
Guide: Dawn on Golden Petals
Doe That Never Slumbers was born alongside her littermate, Lone Camellia in the Sun - both daughters of Shadow of Soaring Eagle. Because Eagle's decision to have kits was something that came from a sense of duty, she didn't seem to have much interest in being a particularly affectionate mother. As soon as she was able to do so, she returned to her Prey-Hunter duties, something Doe was able to accept quite readily as she might've been just about the easiest kit to raise in the entire valley. The first few times she was watched by one of the other Kit-Mothers, she hardly moved from her place outside the nursery, more than content to watch the daily life of the Tribe unfold around her. She overheard many things that took place outside the cave - from a boastful To-Be's story to a Cave-Guard's report, she heard it all, and it interested her immensely. Though she would never wander outside camp without permission, she could imagine what it was like out there all she liked - so that's what she did. Rulebreaking is simply not something that naturally occurs to Doe as an option.
An interesting disruption of daily Tribe life came in the form of the earthquake that rocked the valley, which drove the Clans to the Tribe's cave as they sought shelter. She'd been told very little of the Clans and had imagined them differently - more savage, living unorganized lives. Finding out they did have an organized group structure was as fascinating to her as it was baffling. Contrary to the rest of her family, Doe enjoyed having the Clan cats in their cave, cramped and stressful as life was during that time. Something was always going on and everything that happened to the Clans and their warriors (not Cave-Guard or Prey-Hunter, but both?) was a source of constant interest for her. This remained even after they left the cave to move into their new homes within the changed valley. Don't get her wrong, Doe isn't interested in the Clans in a way that would make her question her loyalty to the Tribe - she's incredibly proud to be part of her Tribe, her heart and soul. She's interested in the Clans in the way a child is interested in wolves because they're her favorite animal.
Once they left, Doe and Camellia were - at last - allowed to take the first step toward becoming a full member of their Tribe. Doe willingly and happily set her paws on the path of a Prey-Hunter and quickly found she loved it. The thrill of her first kill never left her and continues to fuel her interest in her training and the path she's on.
