At a particular point in the river as it weaves and flows through the mountain lands, a fallen birch marks a crossing over the deeper waters. The tree is a little unstable, and can be slippery when wet, so it is best to cross carefully. Not only is it a crossing point for feline paws, but many other animals use it as well. Racoons and foxes can also thread along its papery bark, meaning it isn't unusual to come across a hostile presence at this point.
