Goldenkit stretched after she awoke from her nap cuddled up to her two sisters, Greenkit and Goosekit. Only an hour earlier, the three of them had been playing and wrestling. The more they grew, the more Goldenkit found herself having to hold back on her sisters, becoming exponentially larger than them. For now, she would leave them to sleep.
The bright young kit left the nursery with her nose in the air, smelling for Owlmind, her mother. The grey warrior was nowhere to be found, so Goldenkit shrugged and began to head to the Elder's Den, where she knew she could find company in Firesky. Wait! How could I forget my manners? Goldenkit stopped abruptly, then spun around and bounced over to the looming pile of prey. Green eyes scanned the pile until they locked in on a rather small rabbit. It would still be difficult for Goldenkit to drag, but it was entirely possible.
The young kit grabbed the rabbit by the front paw, having no idea what she was doing, and began to drag it over to the Elder's Den. By the time she had reached it, Goldenkit found herself quite tired from exerting herself so much. However, she tried her best to look as confident as ever as she dragged the rabbit into the center of the den, square in front of Firesky.
Goldenkit purred, going up to her grandmother and rubbing against her flank. "I brought you some food." The kit smiled hopefully. Usually, an eating elder was a talking elder, so there was a good chance that Goldenkit would get to listen to her grandmother speak on a wide variety of things. "Could you maybe," she started sheepishly, "tell me a story?"

G O O S E K I T Contrary to the belief of her sister, Goosekit remained awake. She had slept for a little while, but had been merely laying with her eyes closed more recently. She felt Goldenkit stir, though she didn’t move or react. She waited until her larger sister had turned away to go towards the entrance to open her eyes and look forward. She somewhat lifted her head just as her sister’s form disappeared around the corner of the Nursery. She did glance towards her, she assumed, sleeping sister to see if she had been the only one to catch their sister sneaking off. But she didn’t particularly care if Greenkit was asleep or not. Just as she didn’t care about where Goldenkit thought she was going off on her own. If it weren’t for the fact that she didn’t want whatever Goldenkit was doing to come back on her should something go wrong, Goosekit might have just laid back down and attempted to sleep again.
Instead, the big-eared gray kit stood from where she laid and slowly walked to the Nursery entrance. Her eyes took a moment to adjust to the light again, but when they did, one of the first things she saw was Goldenkit. She seemed to be going somewhere, but she suddenly stopped and turned around, going towards the fresh-kill pile. One of Goosekit’s ears twitched in slight amusement as she watched her sister grab a rabbit about the size of herself and drag it across camp. She merely shook her head. “Show-off.”
She only whispered to herself and continued to watch as her sister struggled to pull the prey, though it was more obvious where she was going now. The Elder’s den. A ping of annoyance suddenly hit Goosekit. “What an attention-seeker, ” she growled, standing and walking forward towards the Elders den just as Goldenkit disappeared from sight. Her tail lashed behind her as she approached the den, peeking inside to see Goldenkit snuggling up to Firesky, their grandmother, and asking so innocently and sweetly for a story.
“Seriously? You think you can get all of grandmother’s attention by bringing her prey and acting cute? Mouse-brain, ” she growled at her sister, her voice taking on that natural temper that her mother also displayed. Though, this growl seemed more intensional than her usual tone of speaking. She padded forward towards Firesky, taking two steps right over the rabbit that Goldenkit had worked so hard to drag into the den. She briefly rubbed her face against her grandmother’s shoulder before taking a seat next to her, narrowing her eyes at her sister.

FIRESKY elder of lightningclan Retirement had suited her well. Her frame filled out gradually, while never back to her full glory of her prime moons. Firesky looked healthy, considering her age. Grey fur spread boldly across her muzzle. Even her paws had touches of silver. The look suited her, a regal queen with enough wisdom and experience to offer the younger generations.
Owlmind had confided in Firesky that Russetfall had been a great mentor, almost like a father figure. It offered the former leader a great comfort to know that her mate's legacy would live on. So when Owlmind asked if her kits could call her grandmother, she agreed without pause. Emotions clutching her throat that she almost choked on her words of agreement.
While being elder it meant she wasn't expected to hunt or patrol, Firesky found having idle paws to be annoying. The only drawback to retirement. Thus she created little jobs for herself. Mostly involving gathering moss soaked water, typically an apprentice chore, Firesky found pride in helping the Clan with the little things.
Luck was on Goldenkit's side when she managed to catch Firesky in the elder's den. Her amber eyes smiled as she purred . Greeting to the young she-kit with a nuzzle, cheek to cheek. "You are quite strong to drag that rabbit all by yourself," She praised, reaching a forepaw to drag it closer in a the perfect spot so that they both could eat. Not that Firesky had a great appetite anymore, but she would for the sake of Goldenkit.
Goosekit's arrival threatened to sour the moment but Firesky took it in stride. Welcoming Goosekit with a nuzzle, Firesky gave each kit a moment to settle. Goldenkit's request for a story heard loud and clear.
"Would you rather hear a story about our valley or the old forest?" She asked before taking a bite, allowing the sisters to decide what they would like to hear.

Goldenkit eyed her sister with a slightly pressed look. While she generally tended to ignore Goosekit's attitude, she was surprised that the grey kit would bring said attitude to Firesky. The golden she-cat let out a gentle sigh. She was concerned for her sister's future. So often did one's abilities to read the room and be friendly help put them further in life. She will learn. One way or another.
A warm purr escaped from Goldenkit's lips as Firesky offered the two sisters a choice in the setting of the story they would get from their grandmother. This was an important decision! Goldenkit could either learn about her history by learning about the forest, or she could learn about more recent and relevant events by hearing the story about the valley. Both stories would help propel her forward in life and enable her to help her clan, but which one was better?
I know! Goosekit can decide. The long-furred kit rubbed her head against Goosekit's head, using it as an excuse to sit a little closer to her moody sister. After picking her head back off her sister, she put her mouth next to the grey she-kit's ear. "How about you pick? It would make grandma happy to know how much you care." She gave her sister an affectionate lick in between the ears after speaking. Goldenkit only wanted what was best for her sister; she could only hope that Goosekit would one day understand how much love she had for her.
For now, all the golden-furred she-cat could do was help her sister in the only way she knew how, even if the more sour of the siblings did not much appreciate it. Firesky was not young by any means, and Goldenkit wanted every moment with their grandma to be a special one.

Narrowed green eyes having been drawn to Firesky at the mention of a story, the unusually large ears of Goosekit flicked in consideration. She had already began to think about what she would want to hear when a voice suddenly filled one of her ears, the light breath that accompanied the voice causing her to whip her head to the side, nearly nose-to-nose with Goldenkit. Her eyes narrowed further, but she did listen momentarily to what her sister said. She acknowledged the first portion about her making the decision and was alright with it, but the second part resulted in a small growl rumbling into her throat.
It was when she saw her sister suddenly lean forward and lick the gray she-cat between her large ears that she allowed the growl to escape, lifting one of her paws and shoving her sister away from her. It wasn’t a full-on shove that would have resulted in her stumbling or anything, but it was the sort that you did to someone when they get too close or are being annoying.
She knows that I care. It would be hard to believe if she didn’t, she growled in her head, shaking it as well. She then turned her gaze back up to her grandmother.
“Maybe the old forest?”

FIRESKY elder of lightningclan Sibling antics were common enough for Firesky that it didn't bother her greatly. Instead she used a forepaw to pull the kits in closer, tuck them beside her to share in her warmth. The night promised to be warm but a mother's instinct drove her to keep them nearby. Goosekit's reaction to her sister's gesture did not go unnoticed. Nudging Goosekit in order to calm her, Firesky purred in delight at Goosekit's request.
"The old forest hm? I haven't thought of our ancestor's time there in many moons," Per words ended on a purr, thinking back on old stories told her to as a young kit. She fell into a pleasant moment of nostalgia. Memories of younger moons coming back to her, aided by the sheer legacy that LightingnClan created. She was born in the valley, raised her kits in the same nursery and now her grandkits. Overwhelmed for a moment, Firesky cleared her throat in an attempt to hide her emotions. Grandmothers ought to be cheerful. Not lost in thought of their younger moons.
"Do either of you know the story of the vanishing moon?" She paused long enough to gather their reaction before diving into the story.
"Long ago in the old forest at a gathering of all five clans. A terrible thing happened," Firestar sat up slightly, using a forepaw to create crude markings on the den floor. Pulling a moss ball to stand in for the Great Rock at the forest's gathering place.
"The Old ShadowClan, we call them NightClan now, was late to the gathering. Our ancient leader Dovestar was there with the other leaders. Then out of nowhere Ripplestar, ShadowClan's leader attacked the gathering cats." Her claws sunk into the floor, showing a fight.
"Dovestar fought bravely as did all the other WindClan cats. Then with a sudden flash of lightning, the moon disappeared. Ripplestar died right on the Great Rock," To show the lightning crack, Firesky slammed her forepaw down.
"It was then decided that while the full moon is out all the Clans come in peace or suffer StarClan's wrath," Her story ended with her clearing away the earlier drawing, fixing it to show the moon clear in the sky.
"That's why it's important when you go to the gatherings you are on your best behavior or StarClan will punish you,"

Goosekit's shove had little effect on Goldenkit, both physically and mentally. The fluffy kit was already much larger than her grey-furred sister, so she barely moved. And of course, Goldenkit was accustomed to Goosekit's antics. She always had such an attitude about her, but Goldenkit just knew that there was a fierce yet soft love that pulsed throughout Goosekit's entire body underneath her rough exterior. And Goldenkit loved her for it.
As Firesky began to tell the story of the vanishing moon, Goldenkit leaned in, drinking in every word that their grandmother had to tell them. In every story was a lesson, and Goldenkit loved to find it. Of course, at the end of the story, Firesky told them the moral of it up-front. That was rather helpful, although Goldenkit strongly believed she would have guessed the moral correctly without it being told. Most likely. Probably.
Goldenkit did struggle with, however, the idea that cats would attack each other at a clan gathering. She had been taught that gatherings were peaceful, good, and sometimes even a bit fun. The fear that those cats must have felt would be awful. As she continued to think, her expression grew more and more puzzled. Why would anyone want to cause fear? Why were there even four clans? There would never be awful ambushes and betrayals of sacred laws as outrageous as the case of the vanishing moon if every clan consolidated into one.
"Firesky, why are there so many clans? Why can't everyone just be Lightningclan?"

If she were honest with herself, hearing Firesky state that she hadn’t thought about the old forest in a long time slightly discouraged her choice. What if she ended up telling them some cheesy story about a brave Warrior who saved the clan or something like that? Heroic stories weren’t stories that Goosekit was overly fond of. Half the time they didn’t sound realistic or just weren’t even accurate to what one cat could likely do within a certain amount of time.
But there was no denying that her grandmother’s introduction to this story hooked her. Stories that started with “once upon a time” or “there once was” were often boring. But asking a question like that? “Do either of you know the story of the vanishing moon?” That was a great way to catch someone’s attention. Goosekit’s normally narrowed green eyes actually widened and were locked onto the previous Leader’s face, clearly waiting for what she would say next.
Completely caught up in listening to the story, the gray she-kit visibly jumped when Firesky slammed her paw against the ground, representing the lightning that struck during the gathering. Her gaze moved down to the little drawing that she crafted on the ground as she spoke the ending of the story. When her final statement was started, she looked back up, flicking an ear and slightly tilting her head at the thought. Starclan would punish them if they misbehaved at the gathering. So when she would eventually get to go to the gathering, she wasn’t allowed to attack anyone. A little bit of a bummer, but that also meant that no one was allowed to touch her. Starclan had wreaked havoc on Ripplestar because he attacked everyone else at a gathering. Surely if he had just insulted them all, he wouldn’t have died that night. The tiniest smirk appeared on her face, but disappeared when her sister chimed in with her own question.
She shook her head at this, her eyes returning to their normal glare as she side-gazed at her sister. “Because none of the cats in the other clans are good enough to be Lightningclan cats. If every cat in this valley was a part of Lightningclan there would be way too many weaklings, ” she growled. Granted, she had her own negative thoughts about nearly every single cat in her own clan, but in her eyes all of the other clans were much worse. She may have been able to see her own clan’s flaws, but she still knew that no other clan was superior to her own.

FIRESKY elder of lightningclan
The difference between the two she-kits remained striking. Goldenkit seemed to be the diplomatic type. Her question came from a place of wanting everyone to be equal. Goosekit's statement the near-polar opposite.
It didn't help that Goosekit remained growly, a prickly kit. Perhaps her name should have been Thornkit. Her pseudo-grandkits would always be perfect in her eyes, but Firesky could have her favorites. Goldenkit's general sense of wonder was quickly winning over the aging she-cat.
"It's not about who is strong or weak," She correct carefully. A cat's pride in their Clan was often enough motivation to defend to the end, but Firesky didn't want either kit to be naive. Despite her age and lack of activity, Firesky had fresh memories of battles. Every Clan had their strengths and weaknesses. Every Clan had strong and weak members. Regrettably, she would place herself in the category of the weak. No longer able to properly defend her Clan.
"Each cat has skills and traits that help them to hunt and live. RainClan cats swim like fish, StoneClan strong legs to scale mountains. We are quick like rabbits. Our talents group us. So it's easier to be different Clans. That way fisher can train new fisher, rabbit chaser teach other rabbit teachers. Our traditions are passed on that way," She told him, taking a moment to nudge each of them. "By being separate we are honoring tradition and our strengths," She added, shifting slightly before sitting up. "I think it's time for a nap. How about I walk you back to the nursery and if Owlmind is busy I'll share a nest with the three of you in the nursery," She purred, taking a leading step, waiting for them to follow.

The two differing opinions on why there couldn't be a master clan were intriguing. Of course, Goldenkit heeded Firesky's words much more than Goosekit's spite-filled ones. Was it not better to focus on strength? But even in her own clan, Goldenkit saw a wide variety of differing strengths. Even among her siblings, this difference could be observed.
"But since Goosekit, Greenkit, and I are all so different, how are we in the same clan?" How could so many different strengths also be one strength? And even more, how did everyone decide which strengths made them different from one another?
Goldenkit shook her head, her long fur cascading about her. Too much thinking. What she needed was exactly what Firesky suggested: a nap! With Firesky! Maybe some of her wisdom gained as a leader would diffuse into the largest of the three kits if she snuggled up to her grandmother closely enough.
Goldenkit's tail shot up, and she couldn't help but bounce up while simultaneously realizing her exhaustion. "That sounds perfect!" The fluffy kit tailed Firesky, heading towards the Nursery for a well-needed time of rest.

The narrowed green eyes of the gray she-kit narrowed even more as her grandmother corrected her. Perhaps to some cats that was the case. But no one, not even Firesky, could deny that strength and weakness did matter in a clan. A clan full of weaklings could hardly be considered a clan. While Goosekit didn’t actually know anyone from the other clans, she knew generally what the other clans were like. Sure, they probably did have some strong cats. But, as any prideful cat would be, Goosekit was one of the ones that fully believed that Lightningclan was the strongest. They were tall, they were fast, and they were smart. All of those things put together were practically the same as physical strength by itself. Strength wasn’t everything. Shaking her head, the she-kit looked to her sister as she asked a question. But as the question was asked, Goosekit suddenly felt the urge to smack her head against the floor of the Elder’s den. “We are in the same clan because we were born here and come from the same cat, mouse-brain, “ she growled. Admittedly, her sister had her strengths. She was smart in her own way. But that question was a display of how sometimes cats didn’t think with whatever smarts they had. “It’s not like mother or Redstar would send us to different clans just cause we are different, ” she growled, standing and taking a few small steps forward, rubbing her head against Firesky briefly. At the suggestion of a nap, the gray feline began to exit the Elder’s den, the tip of her tail twitching behind her. She glanced back for a mere moment to see if her grandmother was following before she looked back forward, eyes set on the Nursery. 294 Ginger Hellion
