Victory sat like a weight in Cricketspring's belly, swirling around like the clouds above them at the cost of said win. They had the stones back, for now, yet a Lightningclan warrior was killed, and Sorrelpaw was injured. The action had been too quick for her to prevent. A stumble during the fight resulted in the opponent and Sorrelpaw falling into a crevice between the stones. Cricketspring had not personally seen what caused the gash on her back leg, but it was large enough that the apprentice had immediately collapsed once the adrenaline ran dry. Hopefully just out of exhaustion and not blood loss, she thought. The battle party found cobwebs to cover the injury for the trek home, then the now seemingly small cat was lifted onto Cricketspring's back and they raced home as quickly as one could. No one stood in her way as the warrior charged straight to the medicine cat's den.

"Dawnblossom, Sandpaw, are you there?" She called once she was close enough to the den. A slight frantic tone appeared in her voice. The party had done all they could. If this didn't work, nothing would. Sorrelpaw didn't stir when the warrior gently knelt into a crouch and slipped out from underneath. It was up to Starclan and their healers now.

Dawnblossom

Herbs had been set aside just for this purpose. Dawnblossom had been absently tidying some of the empty patient nests within the cool, rocky cave she and Sandpaw called home, when Cricketspring appeared - bringing the scent of blood with her.

"Lay her down as carefully as you can, right here." Not the apprentice! Dawnblossom's heart panged for the young she-cat, so close to being a warrior. Her flank was bloodied, and Dawnblossom made short work nosing through the mixture of fur and cobwebs to identify the shockingly deep gashes down Sorrelpaw's back right leg. The viciousness of LightningClan seemed to know no true end. Foxhearted...

"Sandpaw, get the raspberry leaves. We need to staunch the bleeding." They would be chewed into a paste and applied directly onto the injuries, which Sandpaw knew to do.

The other injuries seemed minor compared to the wounds on Sorrelpaw's leg, but they were not forgotten. They would need to be cleaned and bound in cobwebs after they dealt with the gashes. Dawnblossom made a small noise of surprise. There was a claw stuck in one of the wounds. It was too delicate for the former queen to remove, so she called over her apprentice. "We need to get that claw out of her or else the wound will get infected. My muzzle isn't small enough; can you try? If you can't, it's okay. We'll think of another way."

Green eyes widened at the sudden appearance of his injured clanmates. The shock didn't last more than a second before Sandpaw was moving to get the things they needed. He was quick to return to Dawnblossom's side with the asked for raspberry leaves to get the bleeding under control. He chewed them as he went, setting the mixture aside on a leaf to use as he nodded to his Mentor about the claw still caught inside the injury. They had to get that out before doing anything else or risk an infection. He set down some goldenrod next to his raspberry mixture to use as a poultice once he was done. He also set down some dandelion and turned green eyes to his patient whom he nuzzled gently.  He knew it was possible Sorrelpaw would wake up at any moment and when she did he didn't want her to be in unnecessary pain so he used his paws to gently pry her mouth open and after crushing the plant with a rock - because his patient was unconscious - and placing the mixture inside Sorrelpaw's mouth. He moved her jaw a bit so that the pain killing properties of the herb could begin to take effect while she was still unconscious.

He then darted to the far side of the den and came back with some moss still dripping with moisture. He used it to clean out the wound before taking a deep breath to brace himself before lowering his muzzle to the mess of the other Apprentice's leg and after careful consideration he dropped his head the rest of the way and carefully tried to extract the lodge claw. It took him a few tries but he finally managed to do it. It left his face speckled in blood but he didn't let himself think about it as he then again ran more cool water over the wound to make certain it was clean. He then took the raspberry leaves he'd chewed up previously and added them over the wound to help staunch the bleeding. He then finished his work by pressing the poultice he'd made from the goldenrod he'd brought. Once he was done he took a deep breath and sat himself down, turning his gaze to Dawnblossom to see if he'd missed anything. He also spoke for the first time since everything had started. "She'll need to rest for a while so we can make sure her injury doesn't get infected, but the bleeding has definitely slowed and she stands a good chance. You did well getting her here so quickly." His tone was calm and confident that everything done was certain to help the injured Apprentice. 

He didn't allow himself to doubt his abilities; mostly because he knew what he was doing. It was only when treating certain cats that he doubted himself so this wasn't an issue for him just now as he didn't know either of these cats too well.

Cricketspring hovered awkwardly as the medicine cats worked. She has assigned herself to this apprentice and now looked what happened. Unsure if it would help, she rambled.
"We were fighting a warrior together, and Sorrelpaw got a jump on the cat. I thought it was going to be the move that turned the fight to our favor, but the both slipped off the rock and into a gap between the stones. I, I just tried to help them get out. Sorrelpaw tried to get the Lightningclan cat out too, and, and she just collapsed once the warrior had run off." She inhaled sharly, remembering the look of determination in the apprentice's eye when trying to rescue the other cat. "I didn't see what happened, but it was a really small place for two cats to be." Her voice was barely above a whisper, the shock of the situation settling over her.

As they worked, Sorrelpaw did not move. When the last mixture of medicine was placed on her wound, the static blackness lifted. She groaned as the world slowly came back to her. The world felt too loud after being out, though it was the typical sounds of camp, hushed after the battle. A strong earthy taste drew her back to the den, to the shuffling cats above her and the awkward pacing by the door. The apprentice gently flicked her tail to show she was awake, energy draining again.

Dawnblossom

Though she was the more experienced medicine cat present and this was considered a serious injury, Dawnblossom actually hung back to allow Sandpaw room to work. When the tom set his mind to something, he worked hard and seldom let doubts or hesitations turn his paws unsteady. The tortoiseshell healer assisted minimally - keeping Sorrelpaw's leg still while Sandpaw removed the claw - and watched over the proceedings with approval.

She had trained him well. The credit most certainly didn't all go to her; learning required effort from both the teacher and the student. Sandpaw had, just as she'd predicted, absorbed knowledge like moss did rain-water. "Very good, Sandpaw. Now she's going to be in shock. We know thyme is a potent herb used to soothe frayed nerves. What can we mix it with, to strengthen it?" It was also plentiful within StoneClan's territory, so they seldom had a shortage.

Dawnblossom rested her tail gently on Cricketspring's back. "You did everything you could. Sandpaw and I believe she will pull through. She is a strong cat. Please tell her mentor what's happened - but take some thyme before you go." Dawnblossom glanced back to her own pupil. "When you decide what to mix with the thyme, please give it to Sorrelpaw. She's awake, and we must not let her get too stressed while her body tries to heal itself."

Sandpaw's ears twitched, the only sign he allowed himself to show his pleasure at having done a good job. He instead nodded at Dawnblossom to show he'd heard her instructions and went to retrieve the asked for thyme along with some poppy seed to help ease the stress from the pain Sorrelpaw was sure to be in. It would help to keep the Apprentice calm while she healed; which her body was sorely going to  need in the coming days. "These poppy seeds should help her remain calm while her body heals, and it works well with the thyme." He gave a gentle, reassuring nuzzle towards his injured patient before turning and equally as gentle purr towards the Apprentice's upset companion. "You did well getting her here to us so quickly Cricketspring." He offered the older she-cat another soft purr and a soft nuzzle in the hope of getting her to settle down.

Her distress or calmness would reflect in Sorrelpaw, after all, as he well knew from experience. Young cats watched their elders to know how to react to things more often than not after all. So if Cricketspring was calm, Sorrelpaw would be calm and trust that all would be well. In reverse, if Cricketspring remained so upset, it may upset Sorrelpaw and cause her healing to be slower because it would stress her out. Honestly he'd remove the older she-cat before that happened, but he hoped that by Dawnblossom giving her something to do it would help her to calm down. The danger was now passed them and the injuries had been seen to. All that remained was for time to pass so that Sorrelpaw's body could do what it was meant to while it healed the wounds she'd sustained.
