Swiftpaw
Fallingstar is dead. The thought unnerved Swiftpaw; Fallingstar had been leader since he was a kit and now she was dead. The dark grey apprentice hadn't been close to her or anything, but it still shook him as much as it did to perhaps her closest friends. Hawkwing is leader now. No, Hawkstar.
Swiftpaw liked Hawkstar and although he didn’t know him very well, he seemed like a decent cat. He would make a good leader, just as good as Fallingstar was, if not, better.
"Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather here, beneath the Rock Pile, for a Clan meeting!"
Swiftpaw looked up from preening his luxurious, dark grey fur to see Hawkstar, standing where he’d seen Fallingstar so many times at the top of the rock pile.
It must be time to announce his deputy, he realised. He briefly smoothed down his chest fur before rising to his paws and trotting over to where the cats had begun to gather.
I wonder who the deputy will be?
There were many cats who, in Swiftpaw’s opinion, had the makings of a strong and valuable deputy. Honeynose would be a good deputy perhaps? The dark grey tom respected his mentor, she had taught him so much, but he wasn’t quite sure she was exactly what StoneClan needed, as much as he’d love her to be picked as deputy.
The new deputy would need to have the trust of Hawkstar and the whole of StoneClan. They needed to be loyal, strong and capable of all the tasks that being deputy required. They needed to know how to pick their battles, they couldn’t just leap into battles at the smallest thing.
"Cats of StoneClan. We have been through hardships in the recent days. We've lost warriors. We lost a deputy. And most recently, we lost a leader. We have known grief. We have encountered things one might never imagine."…"I cannot guarantee we will not experience further difficulties as time moves forward. What I can promise, however, is that I, Hawkstar, shall remain strong in the face of hardships. For StoneClan."…"But I won't be able to stand alone. I require help. From StoneClan, and from a deputy. It is for this reason that I have gathered you here today. I say these words before StarClan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors, the spirit of Fallingstar, may hear and approve of my choice. The new deputy of StoneClan is Wolfclaw!"
Wolfclaw! An excellent choice on Hawkstar’s behalf Swiftpaw thought privately. He joined in with his clanmates yowling, ”Wolfclaw! Wolfclaw! Wolfclaw!”
Swiftpaw knew that with a strong deputy and leader, StoneClan would be stronger than ever. The memories of Falconleap, the StoneClan deputy before Hawkstar, betraying her clan to go and be with her RainClan mate, Vultureleap, were still fresh in their minds. With a loyal deputy, StoneClan would be secure again.
Swiftpaw had thought the ceremony was over when Hawkstar began to pick his way down the rock pile and was in the process of rising to walk away when the StoneClan leader’s mew sounded again.
"Cricketpaw, Swiftpaw, please step forward.”
Swiftpaw’s heart stopped. Why had Hawkstar called his name? It took a while for him to realise why.
Wait, is he going to make me a warrior?
Swiftpaw’s warrior ceremony was long overdue; he should’ve been made a warrior several moons ago. Was today the day he would receive his warrior name?
Quite speechless, Swiftpaw took a step forward, his breathing shaky. Is this really happening? he wondered.
He forced himself to calm down and watched eagerly as Hawkstar spoke to Cricketpaw.
"Cricketpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?”
Adderpaw should be here. he suddenly thought and all of a sudden, he wasn’t so excited. His sister, Adderpaw, oh how dearly he missed her.
