Leaf-bare was probably the she-cat's favorite season weather-wise. Of course, LightningClan had it a lot easier during the colder moons that the other Clans did; even if food was a bit scarce, the weather was lovely, and Sleetshine couldn't help but appreciate that the lack of heat helped her fur to stay in proper form for a longer time. Padding through the moor with the air of pride around her, the she-cat looked nothing less than noble, and when she reached her desired destination, she turned to look back at Frostpaw, beaming at her new apprentice.
"Well, Frostpaw, this will be our first session together as mentor and apprentice! I hope you're ready to work hard," Sleetshine meowed cheerfully. The she-cat had been pleased, though not surprised, that she would be training one of her sister's kits. She adored them all, but Frostpaw, she thought, would be the best match for her.
Lifting her pale face to the sky, Sleetshine examined the clouds above, vaguely wondering if they would receive snow sometime soon. It would be the first time Frostpaw learned what snow was, and Sleetshine couldn't wait to show her exactly what frost was, too. "All right, why don't we start with hunting?"

At last! She was an apprentice! She could almost SING she was so happy!
With the words of Blazestar still echoing in her head from the ceremony yesterday, Frostpaw had left with Sleetshine early that morning, the prospect of actually getting to hunt making her paws itch and her blue eyes glow like ice crystals with eagerness. The chilly wind had the she-cat's fur fluffed up protectively, but judging by the almost hyperactive increase in activity, it was likely Frostpaw was plenty warm; investigating every bush and every rock and every tree, the white and ginger apprentice quickly circled back as Sleetshine's words reached her.
As much as she would have loved to have Cloudflight, her father, as her mentor, she couldn't say she was disappointed with Sleetshine; she really admired her aunt. Not really able to grasp the pacifist nature of her mother and brother Snowpaw, Frostpaw always felt a certain amount of kinship, almost sisterly with the older she-cat, and she'd almost purred up a storm when Blazestar had given her to Sleetshine as a newbie-apprentice.
"Can we catch some quail? Rapidwind says they're fast, and I wanna see first hand," Frostpaw mewed, chuckling at the possibly exaggerated tale her 'God-Father' had shared with her and the other apprentices. "If it's small, I can give it to Snowpaw, since he won't be learning how to hunt much, will he?" Her bright blue eyes were settled on Sleetshine's face, and it was clear that there was a little puzzlement in the she-cat's eyes over Snowpaw's decision and acceptance as the new Medicine Cat Apprentice. Why anyone would want to be trapped in the den of that alarming black-furred behemoth was completely lost on Frostpaw. Wouldn't Snowpaw rather be out in the open with her and Icepaw, exploring and hunting, playing and learning how to fight? No, no he really wouldn't.
Though she didn't understand the lure of being a medicine cat, she was very very happy that her soft-hearted, soft-furred brother had found a place he fit into. He wouldn't have been cut out for fighting, not like she and Icepaw were. So it was with relief that she put Snowpaw at the back of her mind, the new apprentice very eager to get started with the first day that was the first step to becoming a warrior.
She couldn't think of anyone better than Sleetshine to have guide her.

Purring in delight, Sleetshine responded to Frostpaw's question. "In this weather, I don't think you'll have very much finding any quail, but you'll definitely be able to catch one by the time new-leaf rolls around." The warrior was pleased that her apprentice had paid such good attention to Rapidwind; Frostpaw was definitely ambitious. "I'm sure Snowpaw would be happy with anything you brought him. Today, though, I think we'll start with mice."
Sleetshine had picked the field for a reason; it was a great place to introduce her niece the the variety of scents in their territory; many animals passed through the location, and there was almost always something to be found there. "Of course, the key to catching mice is to be light on your feet," the warrior explained. "You've seen a mouse before in the fresh-kill pile, correct? They're so tiny that they can feel you coming towards them if you start off running."
As the words left her, the warrior began to demonstrate. She crouched slightly and slid over the ground, soft grass brushing against her belly and her feet pressing silently into the ground. Had she not been in Frostpaw's vision, it would be impossible to sense the warriors presence. Once she had traveled a relative distance, the warrior padded back over to her apprentice and meowed, "Now, why don't you try?"

At this stage in life, Dovesong's daughter was the equivalent of a white-and-ginger-furred sponge, with bright blue eyes and a head ready for filling. Watching Sleetshine with eagerness, Frostpaw stayed where she was, her ears pricking forward with astonishment at the silence and the stillness with which her aunt moved. Wow, she gushed, her breath coming out in clouds as she spoke up, curious and ready to try; "Can they hear us through the snow?" Trying to imprint the image of Sleetshine stalking an invisible mouse, Frostpaw stepped forward, fighting through her awkwardness to mimic Sleetshine's crouch. She was a bit off balance in her stalking, she had mastered stepping lightly with her front paws - that wasn't hard, anyone who's had to tiptoe around the nursery knew that much - but she was a little heavy of foot in the back two.
Aware that something felt off, for one thing the snow kept crunching under her paws like it was just waiting for her to step on it, Frostpaw couldn't quite place why it sounded and felt so different from Sleetshine's. Frowning, her ears rotated and swiveled as the wind blew past, ruffling her white fur while Frostpaw tried to transfer more of her weight to her front, her crouch uneven in the opposite way now. This was kind of...hard. Maybe if I crouch down lower? Frostpaw's supple limbs bent with ease, and though her belly-fur brushed against the snow that hadn't already been stepped on, she was able to move a little quieter, but it was easy to see on her face that she was feeling a little off.
Shaking snow off her paws, Frostpaw turned around, letting out an awkward laugh. "Uh Sleetshine...The snow never warms up, does it? It's always this cold?" It felt like a stupid question, but to a new apprentice and a creature who was new to the highs and lows of winter, this seemed like a perfectly plausible inquiery. Her toes were cold.

The white she-cat's eyes traced her apprentice's movements as Frostpaw attempted to mimic her hunting movements. Of course, mice were probably the strangest of all LightningClan prey to hunt since the approach was more important than the chase, as with rabbits.
Still, mice were the only thing Sleetshine thought they might have a chance of finding under the layers of slow. No doubt that the rabbits had almost all taken to the ground. The thought frustrated Sleetshine, but she knew that the only thing she would be able to do for her Clan was hunt the best she could, and eat as little as she could survive on. Sleetshine's biggest worry, of course, was making sure that Frostpaw and her siblings would make it through their first leaf-bare.
Pricking her ears, the warrior listened her niece's question before shaking her head. "It won't warm up until new-leaf, and when that happens it all becomes water." Sleetshine inhaled, allowing the cool air to fill her lungs. "At least you'll only see snow in this season," she meowed.
Stepping closer to her apprentice, Sleetshine guided her with her nose. "Place your feet closer together, with such a wide stance you'll end up falling over, and also remember to keep your back straight. Luckily, you'll probably hunt best in this snow." Sleetshine allowed herself a lighthearted purr, trying to cheer up Frostpaw. "Nothing will be able to see you coming with that white fur!"

Listening intently to Sleetshine, Frostpaw drew her paws in closer together, and immediately felt a little more 'controlled' than she had before. Realizing she'd probably been stalking about willy-nilly, she flushed a little beneath her pelt. I bet Dad didn't look this ridiculous when he was an apprentice. Nah, of course he didn't. He probably looked cool and got it down in no time at all. Hoping to live up to the hero-worship she had for her father, Frostpaw almost missed Sleetshine's attempt to cheer her up.
Flashing her aunt a grateful smile, the ginger and white kitten purred back. "Iceki-- Icepaw siad something weird the other day about fur colors, actually." She shifted out of the stalking position and into a sit, taking turns lifting her paws up out of the compacted snow. "He said that Toadkit's fur was so dark because he stayed in the shadows - and that Rookfrost's fur was so black because he never goes out of his den for very long." It kinda sounds silly when I say out loud...but that might be true. "It sounds dumb, but do you think Icepaw's right? Isn't that how..." She paused, struggling to recall the exact words. "Isn't that how TigerClan got their stripes? From hunting in the shadows?"
If cats really could change their appearance based on the environment they lived in, then that made everything she thought she knew about the world...suddenly very different. For a few seconds she thought Sleetshine would laugh at her, but curiosity overwhelmed the desire to stick her face in the snow until the embarrassment had passed. I know Icepaw has quite the imagination but...he sounded so sure. [/style] |

Sleetshine bit her tongue, trying to hold back laughter. It sounded just like Icepaw to come up with such a ridiculous concept, but the warrior would be quick to dismiss that idea. "Not exactly, Frostpaw," she meowed. "Cats coats are usually similar to their parents. Of course, there are some exceptions, but that's how it goes. Besides, I think Rookfrost is out collecting herbs more often than anything."
Finishing her explanation, Sleetshine nodded reassuringly. "As for TigerClan, I'm sure their stripes went well with their grasses, but they all had stripes so all of their kits had stripes." Suddenly the warrior blinked, remembering they were supposed to be out hunting, not chatting.
"Back on topic, Frostpaw, why don't you try that crouch again?" As her apprentice went to do as she asked, the she-cat opened her jaw to inhale the scents around them. Maybe if she could find something, Frostpaw would be able to try and hunt something for real on her first day out.

Oh. Well that made sense then. Feeling embarrassed, Frostpaw was all too quick to let this topic go, instead dropping into a hunting crouch again, feeling it come a little more easily with practice. Imagining a mouse nibbling on a fallen leaf, the ginger-patched she-cat pretended to stalk it, her body unused to holding this position correctly (as a kit she'd mastered the wrong way how to do it, and changing it now was new for her), but Frostpaw tried anyway. Slinking forward, she made sure every step was as quiet as could be, but impatience was beginning to make her movements rushed, and Frostpaw pounced, sending snow up into the air like cannon fodder, the she-cat shaking the excess from her pelt.
Turning around to talk to Sleetshine, she noticed her aunt had paused, perhaps searching for something. Heartbeat increasing, Frostpaw instantly fell silent. Did she find a mouse? As if in answer to her question, a red winged cardinal took off from one of StoneClan's very few trees, and Frostpaw, startled, turn around and watched it, her ginger tail fluffed. "What was that?" It was obviously a bird, but she'd never seen one with such bright plumage! How...how very strange. Wonderfully strange, that color. With Icepaw's thoughts at fur colors still on her mind, Frostpaw imagined for a few seconds that she had the stunning crimson fur color rather than her white and ginger pelt.
How luxurious would that be? The only cat in the whole forest with bright red fur!

For the moment, it seemed, prey was scarcer that Sleetshine initially thought it would be. Yet, as Frostpaw's voice caught her attention, and the warrior looked up in time to watch the flash of red vanish into the air. Tail curling in mild disappointment, since every piece of prey was valuable in leaf-bare, the she-cat meowed, "That's a cardinal; I'm surprised it hasn't flown off yet. They're one of the brightest birds; though, Blue jays are usually rather pretty too."
Shaking her head, the white warrior stepped over to her apprentice. "When you're hunting, Frostpaw, don't forget that you have to be patient. It's the element of surprise when prey can hide in the ground or fly away. Your speed will come in handy, though, when the rabbits return in the spring." In all honesty, Sleetshine was already looking forward to taking Frostpaw out to hunt in the spring; there would be plenty of prey fresh to catch.
"Anyway, why don't we try something a little different? I want you to try and track an animal. But first, how many scents do you know so far?" she questioned, her eyes focused on Frostpaw. Her niece had a lot to learn, and Sleetshine knew that today would just be breaking the surface.

Her aunt's words brought the white and ginger she-cat right back to attention, her expression full of quiet attentiveness. Blue jays? Had she ever seen one? Probably not, well maybe once when she was very very young, but apparently not old enough to actually recall what they looked like. Sleetshine's words about her speed warmed Frostpaw from her ear tips to the ends of her paws, the she-cat pleased that her hunting crouch and such weren't a total bust. Progress! Progress is goo- wait, track an animal?
What WAS tracking? Just...noting where an animal had been and where it was going, right? It sounded difficult, and yet surprisingly fun at the same time, but it would definitely require more patience than she possessed. Mulling over the actual act of tracking, Frostpaw started, remembering the second half of her aunt's words. What scents do you know?
"Fox," she mewed right off the bad. Rapidwind, once a patrol of LightningClan cats had killed it, had come home with a scrap of red fur, and told all three of Dovesong's kits to smell it and make sure they memorized this scent. "Hare, Rabbit, aaaaand..." She frowned, wracking her brain. "Quail! I think that's it though. The scents kind of just mingle when they're all on the fresh kill pile." Hare and rabbit were easy to distinguish, considering they were on the fresh kill pile the most. [/style] |

"Right then. Time to introduce you to a few more, stay put for a moment." As Sleetshine gave her apprentice a gentle order, she raised her head and tasted the air, her ears pricked to catch the slightest of sounds. As an adept, and overly prideful, hunter, it didn't take long for the pale white she-cat to pick out a nearby scent.
The lesson she had tried to show Frostpaw was quickly put to use as the LightningClan warrior slipped into a familiar crouch. Despite the pose, she moved swiftly, lightly, silently, until she had traveled a few fox lengths from where she had commanded her apprentice to stay. In a flash, Sleetshine pounced, and turned back with a scrawny rodent in her jaws.
Dropping it at Frostpaw's front, the she-cat gestured to the weak kill with her tail. "Although most of the time you'll find rabbit scents, occasionally you'll find mice. Another animal with a similar scent are squirrels, though they are rarely on the moor." Looking at her catch, suddenly Sleetshine felt slightly disheartened. The prey was pathetically small; of course, a well-fed mouse was unlikely to be out of its den in the snow, but the mere sight of it was almost offensive to Sleetshine.
Yet, prey was prey, and even if it was just a bite of food, it was edible, and it could help feed the Clan.

Frostpaw's eyes were peeled upon the hunting crouch her aunt had fallen into; I need to get this perfectly. Though she didn't follow after the snowy-furred she-cat, she did try to mimic the crouch from where she was standing, being sure to keep low and not startle whatever it was Sleetshine had set her sights on. Wow! She just...got it in no time at all! Frostpaw purred, her paws warming as she took pride in watching her kin hunt as well as everyone had claimed she did; not that Frostpaw had ever doubted Sleetshine's abilities, it was just...different, seeing them in action.
She DID notice, however, that the rodent was particularly scrawny looking. "Why is it so small? Actually...where IS all the prey? Is it because it's too cold for them to come out of their burrows?" Rapidwind hadn't really explained that much to her, whenever she brought up leafbare, he said he hadn't wanted to ruin the surprise. She assumed he meant the snow, which was, two parts exhilerating, two parts cold and weird, but a little heads up on the scarcity of prey would've been nice. Since she and her siblings were in the nursery, it never seemed like a shortage of prey. They always went to bed with full bellies.
"Is the prey this...absent every year?" asked the ginger-patched kitten. Not forgetting the whole point of the exercise, however, Frostpaw gently nosed the animal carcass, taking in a deep wiff of the mouse. It smelled kind of leafy, very earthen and a little bit like berries or nuts or something she couldn't quite place. It was interesting, very woody.

Sleetshine nodded in response to her apprentice's question. "Indeed. Leaf-bare is the hardest season in the year; the weather gets cold and the prey burrows underground. In new-leaf, however, they will return, but it's hard until then. Especially since green-cough usually sweeps through camp in this season." The white she-cat's eyes seemed to mist over a bit as she explained; though Sleetshine was not yet a senior warrior, in moons she had seen the effects of the cold, harsh weather on a Clan.
Blinking a few times, the LightningClan warrior suddenly realized how gloomy she was sounding. "Anyway, Frostpaw, we're going to turn you into a great hunter so that, no matter what the season, you'll be able to catch something! Now, why don't you try to find something again?" As she asked the question, her gaze locked on the ginger-and-white apprentice, and Sleetshine was reminded of her sister, Dovesong. In some ways, the two were very much alike.

Greencough. Frostpaw felt a certain trill of worry creep along her spine as though she had a massive spider on her back, and Frostpaw shivered where she stood, trying not to get worked up over the idea of catching a highly infectious, and often times fatal disease. Besides, I don't wanna have to be anywhere near Rookfrost than I have to. He's okay, but he's not really that nice...
//"Anyway, Frostpaw, we're going to turn you into a great hunter so that, no matter what the season, you'll be able to catch something! Now, why don't you try to find something again?"//
Stirred from her thoughts, the ginger and white she-cat dipped her head immediately, returning to her vigorous state once more; "Right! I'll check over here." Mewed Frostpaw confidently, determined not to get the season blues that seemed to sweep through camp like it's own sort of epidemic. Spinning around to survey the wintry terrain, the wanna-be-warrior ran over everything she had been learning since Sleetshine had become her mentor.
Check your position with the wind, see what you can scent. Frostpaw padded forward, trying to minimize the noise, forgoing grace in favor of efficiently as she made a few small bunny hops, neck craning out, mouth open, blue eyes sharp as she surveyed their hunting grounds. I think I- YES!
It wasn't a rabbit or hare, and it wasn't a mouse or anything, they were all tucked away underground until Newleaf, if she was remembering that correctly. Frostpaw immediately crouched down, trying to blend in with the powdery, crystallized water as she spotted her target. Or rather, her target was spotted. The little bird had a speckled breast, with a light tan base and dark brown spotting and particularly heavy striping on it's tail. What are you, little birdie? A...thrush? Are you a thrush? Frostpaw half considered glancing over her shoulder to ask Sleetshine, but silly questions in the middle of a hunt was...not wise. Besides, the proper identification of this bird could wait until after she had it in her claws.

A gentle breeze pierced Sleetshine's thick white coat, inducing a shiver in the warrior. She stayed silent with her eyes locked on to the apprentice as she made her next attempt at a hunt. Blinking, the warrior inched silently towards a bank of snow that would block out the wind; though, it wasn't much protection since LightningClan had always been rather sparse. From the way Frostpaw moved, she was seemed to be doing well.
The apprentice seemed to have found something; and as much as she wanted to get closer, the warrior knew that it would be best for Frostpaw to learn through experience. Realizing that she was holding her breath in anticipation, the white she-cat let a sharp breath escape her muzzle. She wanted to be hovering over Frostpaw, but the she-cat knew that the only way that the apprentice would learn would be through practice. It took so much effort for the warrior to stay out of it, but she did.
