Leaf-fall 14, year 8: A day of heavy cloud-cover and bleak skies. Leaves crackle underneath, making hunting a challenge.

Lightningflash STONECLAN WARRIOR not a yes, sir. not a follower. [attr="class","lightning"]“I... don't know what I'm doing, Sorrelclaw.” He admitted, looking up at the withered, dead branches of the one miserable tree in StoneClan territory. His yellow eyes shone in the semi-darkness as night approached, hinting that they should probably return to camp. Silently, the brown tabby she-cat drew up beside him and sat down. She didn't ask him to elaborate, but he did anyway. “Being Elderpaw's mentor, I mean. Shadepool, she does have a point. I was never an apprentice.” He flicked an ear awkwardly. Sorrelclaw finally turned to him. “You know how to hunt, how to defend yourself. Who taught you that?” Lightningflash was surprised by the question. “My mother, Wander.” He laughed slightly. “She had her paws full, with the two of us.” Sorrelclaw smiled, perhaps recalling fond memories of her own parents. So many families were alike, regardless of where they came from. “Then you already know some of what you need to know. You'll do fine.” She promised, resting a tail-tip on his flank. He frowned doubtfully. “I was never taught how to mentor.” He pointed out, meeting her gaze. To his further bewilderment, Sorrelclaw chuckled. “You think we're taught how to mentor?” She asked him, shaking her head. “When I got my first apprentice, I didn't have the slightest clue how to teach a cat anything.” She purred. “Mentoring is a learning experience, for you and for your apprentice. And if Smokestar thought you and Tumbleheart deserved to join StoneClan, I trust her judgement more than I'd ever trust Shadepool's.” The thought that a first-time Clan-born mentor would be as lost as he felt made his shoulders relax. As both deputy and warrior bent to pick up the birds they had slain, he began to trot back to camp with a newfound plan and determination to do right by Elderpaw. ⚡ It was not the perfect day to begin training. The sky was scattered with the most miserable, dreary-looking clouds Lightningflash had ever seen, and a cool breeze wafted across the territory. But Lightningflash didn't want to keep Elderpaw waiting, and besides, he'd need to know how to work in conditions like this. Still, the cold would make prey reluctant to emerge from the warmth of the rocks, so he'd probably not get much hunting done today. The black and white warrior poked his head into the apprentice den, feeling somewhat rude. Sorrelclaw had advised him that apprentices were supposed to have early starts, but he still already felt intrusive as he watched some of the young cats sleeping peacefully. “Elderpaw?” He meowed into the darkness, his yellow eyes struggling to place where the orange-brown tom slept. Yewpaw groaned and tucked her tortoiseshell paws over her head. Finally, he spotted the apprentice, and gave him a nod. “Let's go.” i was lightning before the thunder |
