Ebonyheart,
Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams
Leafbare was coming.
It was only a matter of time before the slightly drifting snow that fell from low hanging clouds covered the valley in a thick blanket of freezing white. The sky would grow dimmer, the temperature colder and life would be harder for the coming moons as the clans weathered it as they always did, struggling to fill their bellies and stay warm.
The large black molly flicked her small nub of a tail as she lifted her head to glance skywards with those pale mossy pools of hers. So far the stinging wind had yet to penetrate the depth of her inky, long fur though the falling powder was cold against her wet nose as it landed and melted quickly.
The sight of snow reminded her of her first moons as apprentice beneath the watchful gaze of the now deaf and retired Sandblaze. This time of the year was always hard. The proper she-cat had experienced several deaths to Greencough fresh out of her den in the Nursery, and only this time moons ago did her former mentor take a tumble into a freezing river that removed one of his important senses.
A small sigh broke through the chest of the large healer, Ebonyheart shifting his green hues back to the small pile of herbs before her flat paws. With each breath a fog puffed from her muzzle, only another sign of how quickly the chill was starting to seep into the cracks of the boulders and rocky terrain that made up Stoneclan's near barren territory.
An ear atop of her had flickered as she nosed the still green herbs into a crevice in which she stored several of her other medicinal plants before pulling herself into a standing position. A few days ago she had requested Birdstar set aside a couple cats to join her on an adventure through their land in search of herbs that would aid the possible onslaught of Whitecough and Greencough.
Both were prevalent during Leaf-Fall and Leafbare, but if she were prepared then the possibility of her preventing it before it became too bad would ease the worry that weighed heavily within her stomach.
Pulling herself from her thoughts in which the young healer often found herself lost with, Ebonyheart shook out her lengthy coat before padding from the seclusion of her den and out into the more openness of Stoneclan's boulder bordered campsite. The familiar tone of her dilute leader caught her attention for a moment, those pale pools of the healer shifting to gaze at Birdstar as he sat talking to Sorrelclaw over near the residentially empty Leader's Den.
There was that rise of warmth beneath her inky pelt for a moment as her heart skipped within her chest. The Medicine Cat was still attempting to completely sort out her feelings when it came to the older tom...
Flickering her nub, Ebonyheart shifted her attention once more as she drew her gaze slowly away from the matte gray warrior with handsome green hues to where the silhouettes of two tomcats waited patiently near the entrance as the snow slowly drifted around them like a faint powder shower. A rise of familiarity rose within the ebony molly's chest as she padded closer to their waiting forms.
"Lynxfang." Her tone was sharp as always, though she gave a dip of respect with her head towards the pale Bengal she had grown up with inside the nursery before turning to yet another cat who shared kinship with the two of them. "Elderpaw." Once again she repeated her actions as she greeted the new apprentice, the eldest of Shadepool's brood who had recently just earned their new titles and ranks among Stoneclan.
"Hopefully the sudden chill hasn't killed any of the herbs." Ebonyheart mewed off-handedly as she once again flicked a ear atop her head before making her way through the two similarly patterned Stoneclanners as she took the lead of their little patrol. Normally she didn't insist on taking battle-prepared cats with her, but since the turn of the weather and the recent territory issues they had been having, it seemed best to be accompanied.
