Sagepaw woke up with a start in the apprentice's den, having no recollection of getting there. She remembered the medicine cat gathering and her dream, but returning to TreeClan was entirely a blur. She didn't remember her mentor scolding her so maybe she'd done well and performed the way a medicine cat apprentice should. In any case, the morning had dawned and the birds were chirping, so she'd hardly caused the end of the world by being picked as Falconstorm's mentor.
She stretched and hopped up for a morning groom and meal. Today was her first day as an official no-take-backs medicine cat. There was no going back from this point on; she would tolerate her mentor's attitude and learn how to heal cats as best she could, guided by StarClan's visions and omens. She waved her paw in front of her face but her eyes still saw the same as they always did. She wondered how she would know if StarClan was talking to her through her surroundings.
She headed over to the fresh-kill pile for something quick before she joined Falconstorm for the day. She figured that if he wasn't waking her up, she'd actually beat him to the punch for once. Prancing away with her baby rabbit, she took up a spot by the big stump. Only when she finished did she noticed the fluff spilling over the top of the huge stump. The sun poured through the trees, illuminating the stump in its warmth and creating the perfect nappin spot. Sagepaw, curious, put her paws on the stump and lifted herself up in several spots, trying to glimpse the face of the cat up here. Her expression brightened.
"Lionstar!" she squealed excitedly. Motes of dust and pollen filtered through the sunbeam. Lionstar seemed to attract a lot of them; Sagepaw glimpsed four flickering stars around his crown but didn't think deeper of them. She was too struck by the similarity to her dream cat to dwell on tricks of the light. "Good morning! Do you want the rest of my rabbit?" she rested her chin on the stump, for that was all she could reach without actually hopping onto the thing. She spoke quite cheerily, ignorant to the possibility that he was probably enjoying his snooze in the sun.
