Beauty is a joy that forever increases It will never pass into nothingness
He took a breath and stared up at the sky feeling the first chills of Leaf-Fall creep into his fur to his skin. He did not know if it was fate or a joke and he inwardly prayed to his sister above that she'd give him strength for this. It was going to be a long road and despite many's opinions on the rather brutal tom Russet-Tail did not want to disappoint. The small female that was striding towards him with gentle blue eyes was a test he had to endure. He did not wish to disappoint her or his clan; those who found him appropriate to training an apprentice. He didn't think he was fitted for the role. He was crude and had one heck of a temper. Your typical hot head with a fowl tongue and anger issues from deep past scars. The thing was though; he still had his humanity. He still had a heart and someone in this clan must have seen that to have the guts to pair him up with the next generation of the clan; having someone so small and fresh from their mother's side under his care was rather intimidating. But Russet-Tail had a secret admiration for the young of the clan and he actually didn't mind them. They reminded him of his time with his sister before she died.
Dark amber eyes blinked and looked down as the fluff ball came to stand in front of him and he looked between her and the sky kind of awkward. The large male looked like a mammoth compared to Snowpaw and he didn't know how to proceed with this new adventure they had been paired for. He may have watched the kits and apprentices from afar; it was most certainly a different matter to be facing them in person and having to speak to them personally. Clearing his throat he lowered his head to look down at her a little so they were face to face.
"Uh, looks like it's you and me paired up together huh kid?" he offered as a greeting and mentally winced at how rude he must have sounded. He didn't want the next generation he worked with thinking he was a brute.
"Lets work hard together and do our best okay?" he added as an after thought before straightening up. He looked around the clearing before turning his attention back to her.
"Alright, Snowpaw for the um...the first training excersis we gonna do is getting to know our territory. It's sort of really important. We're going to learn about scents, borders, and marking scents to start off with. So um yeah, follow me." he flicked his tail and began heading out of the clearing of camp and traveled down the path towards the Tramped Clearing where he chose to start first with her lessons.
First lessons meant to impress he guessed. He remembered his own training days but that way different and many moons ago. What was this kid like? Should he talk with her casually and get to know her so that he can better understand how to train her without hurting her feelings? Probably or else he'd be training blind and the last thing he wanted was to waste both their time.
"So tell me kid...are you familiar with stories about the territories and history of Lightningclan?" he asked glancing down at the she-cat under his care with a curious look in his eyes. 580 word count Katara Silverburr Russet-Tail Ivoryrose poppypaw Tigerpaw Smudgenose PRIMROSEPETAL mousepaw rock pendulum

No matter how perfect the day is, it always has to end. [attr="class","snowybody"]In the grand scheme of things, six moons was not a long time, but it had been Snowpaw's entire life so far, so from her perspective it had taken forever for her to become an apprentice. She'd been so excited, she was practically still in shock over the experience, and wasn't entirely sure what she should be doing when the ceremony had ended. For a moment, she couldn't remember who she'd touched noses with to accept them as her mentor, and blinked as a dark ginger tom approached her. " Uh, looks like it's you and me paired up together huh, kid? Let's work hard together and do our best, okay?" Snowpaw blinked again to clear her confusion, and everything seemed to start settling in for her. She was an apprentice! She could start training immediately now - everything she'd been waiting for, for the past six moons, was at the tips of her paws waiting for her to learn it. Her blue eyes brightened as she focused on her mentor, and his name sprang into her mind easily now. " Yes, Russet-tail!" she mewed, her eyes shining. He was much bigger than her, and practically towered over her in size, but his voice seemed gentle and gave her the impression she would be safe with him. If he was acting awkward in any way, she couldn't have noticed; any warrior seemed quite all-knowing to her, and she had an instant confidence in his abilities. He continued, and though Snowpaw was truly trying her best to listen attentively, her mind just about exploded with anticipation the moment he said they were going to tour the territory. She hid it well though, only her round eyes betraying how thrilled she was. " I'll listen to everything you say!" she promised. " I'm ready!" She sprang to her paws, the tip of her tail flicking to-in-fro with nervous excitement as she followed after her mentor. She cast a look back at her siblings, all three of them getting sorted with their own mentors, and felt just a faint tug of her heart at being separated from them. She'd never thought she'd feel that way about being away from Swiftpaw and Harepaw, but something about spending your entire life with your littermates really did wonders for your attachment to them... She let out a little purr, knowing she'd have the chance to catch up with all three of them later, and raced to catch up with Russet-tail, his longer legs having put him much further ahead of her. Once she'd caught up with him, she realized she had to keep her pace a little faster to make sure she more-or-less kept pace with him. " So tell me, kid... are you familiar with stories about the territories and history of LightningClan?" he asked, and she tilted her head at the question. She'd only demanded a thousand stories from the elders, but how much did he want to know? " Yes!" she said. " I've heard all about the tunnels, and I know Crystal Creek is nearby." Her ears swiveled, straining to hear a trickling of water and, sure enough, she could hear the gentle gurgle of the nearby water source. " I know the Trampled Clearing is where apprentices train, and that the Flooded Grasses is a good place for both prey and herbs. Oh! And the Star Field, I can't wait to see it..." Her father had described to her the first time he'd seen it, and she'd been entranced ever since. " And the borders, there's the-the Open Woods with... TreeClan..." Yes, that had to be right, because the other border was with-- " StoneClan has the other border, and that's the Sun Stones." She looked at Russet-tail eagerly once she'd finished rambling to him, as if waiting to hear whether or not she'd answered his question correctly. "Sadly enough, the most painful goodbyes are the ones left unsaid and unexplained" ~Russet-TailShe was small. A cute little thing with big bright eyes that took in everything. Very hyper, no maybe not hyper more eager than anything. Good, maybe she'll be a quick learner. Russet-Tail didn't mind the company of an apprentice or kit and Snowpaw reminded him a little of Littlepaw before she passed away; a thought that he wasn't sure if he agreed with or not right now. He didn't know how to proceed in interactions with his apprentice because it had been so long since he allowed himself to be in the company of someone so young and eager. But, the more he thought about it and listened to the small she-cat that tried to keep pace with him the more he realized it didn't matter all that much. It would be a learning lesson for both of them. As he padded along the path he felt her presence beside him as her smaller legs tried to keep up with his longer strides. He mindfully slowed down some so that she can keep up with him. Her bright and eager voice speaking up answering his questions. An impressed look down at her impressed. Nodding down at her as she looked up at him gave a small smile.
"Very good, that is very good. All of that is right; you must love listening to stories hmm? Anyway, though, my goal here is that is for us to take time to spend within each part of the territory so you will see the layout of the land that you will be going through every day to hunt and patrol. You must get familiar with the territory but it is not needed to get to know all in one day of course. The more we train the better you will understand. But be careful and watch your footing in some of them. Don't get too excited that you lose focus. Just because you are an apprentice does not mean you are invincible alright?" he said with a faintly worried expression as he turned away from her and went back towards looking at the territory as they walked.
"First though, tell me, what do you smell around you right now?" he asked as he walked looking around before looking back down. He stopped among the path and sat down. "Breath in the air and tell me what you smell." he instructed calmly. Word Count: #399 || Tag: Katara || Notes: sorry it's short!

No matter how perfect the day is, it always has to end. [attr="class","snowybody"]Russet-tail shot her an impressed look after she answered his question, and she was so pleased she had to keep herself from doing a little bounce on her toes. She was a warrior apprentice now! She could save her dances of triumph for later, when she was boasting about her first day's experience with her siblings. "... you must love listening to stories, hmmm?" Snowpaw bobbed her head happily. If she were lucky, perhaps he'd share some of his own stories with her one day. She stood still now, listening closely as Russet-tail went on. It made sense that they'd spend time learning the territory today - he was right that it was important to learn it now, since she'd be spending the rest of her life hunting and patrolling in it. Even though it was arguable hunting or fighting would be a more exciting way to start her training, she thought Russet-tail was smart to begin with learning the territory first. Maybe she wouldn't catch a rabbit today, but she'd know the best places to find them! Utterly unable to see a downside to her first day, she just soaked in every detail her mentor gave her. He warned her not to get too excited, a layer of concern in his tone, and she nodded solemnly at him. " Okay, Russet-tail! I won't get too excited." She was maybe being a little bit too eager, she realized, and wondered if the older tom thought she might accidentally rush head-first into danger. " I know apprentices aren't invincible," she added, " or warriors. Especially when Demon is out there." She shivered. She'd heard only nursery tales about the giant cat that preyed upon the Clans of the valley. Even the elders didn't talk about him much, not when the memory of recent deaths by his claws were so fresh. Snowpaw could hardly go near the medicine den without feeling her pelt itching; she felt deeply sorry for Kindleflare, whose apprentice had been killed by Demon. Approaching any emotional situation always made the young she-cat uncomfortable. Snowpaw kept pace with him, finding it easier now, not noticing the ginger-tailed warrior had slowed down to accommodate her. He slowed to a halt as he asked his next question, instructing her to take a deep breath. She sat down with him, inhaling deeply to let the scents of the moor rush over her senses. " The air is so clear and cool up here," she murmured, and shivered when a cool breeze buffeted her. Her short fur fluffed up a little, but she kept breathing in. " Sharp, tangy scents... maybe some herbs? Mouse, I think... but it's stale," she added, realizing it was faint. The wind changed direction slightly, bringing her a new scent. " Rabbit!" she mewed excitedly. " Are we near good places to hunt?" She was so distracted by the scent of prey that she dismissed any other new scents, losing focus. "Sadly enough, the most painful goodbyes are the ones left unsaid and unexplained" ~Russet-TailHis senses were on high alert as they moved through the forest. The weather was getting so cold and the chill of the air around them were frozen as they entered their lungs. But, the weather change meant more then just the uncomfortable temperature. His dark eyes lowered to see the excited face of his apprentice and he couldn't help but feel the twitch of his mouth turn up ever so slightly. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad training this young apprentice. She was so eager and happy; maybe it was Littlepaw's way of letting him know that everything would be okay. As they walked he listened to her speak and her bright voice showed just how eager and excited about her future she seemed. He hoped he'd do her justice.
When they finally stopped and he'd instructed her to listen and smell around her he waited patiently for the young apprentice to sift through the scents. His jaws parted some to be able to scent the area too; not just for danger but to be able to smell exactly what she was too. His head dipped a few times as she spoke up about what she was smelling and gave a small hum of approval.
"Very good, you catch on quickly. But no, right now lets not focus on hunting. We are here for a territory tour this morning. I know you are eager but we will get to hunting soon enough; patience is a key you might want to start learning now because you'll need plenty of it when your hunting." he told her as he looked down at the fur ball beside him.
"Do you smell anything else? Perhaps some feline scents around?" he suggested nudging her to refocus her attention to the surroundings. "I want you to familiarize yourself with the scent of this territory land marks and the many scents that can be found here. As you learn you'll start categorizing the different scents to the territory parts of our lands and go there when you are on a particular mission perhaps. We will learn all sort of scents later on our journey and some will be different clan scents." he nudged her forwards as he rose to his paws again so that they could keep moving along the path.
"As you well know this land is Trampled Clearing. It is where apprentices like yourself train. This is where most of your beginning training will be; from there we will go back out to the land to practice what we learned here." he spoke up as he looked back over his shoulder at the Trampled Clearing remembering his own training sessions when he was younger. He hoped that he'd be a good enough mentor to Snowpaw to do his former mentor justice for the training he had received. Word Count: 492 || Tag: Katara || Notes: #
