[attr="class","bs"]Birdstar heard the pebbles and dirt skittering before anything else. The gray tom's ears pivoted, and he frowned, letting out a worried mrooow to bring some cats to his flanks as he ran out to meet whatever was making the sound of three cats running quickly across StoneClan Territory.
Littlepetal, Sorrelclaw, and Sagefire appeared from around the corner of the big boulder that served as one of the outermost points in the camp (that didn't include the living quarters). All of them panting, out of breath. Birdstar looked from one cat to the other. He opened his mouth to ask what happened when Sorrelclaw managed to catch air and sputtered out, "He's there-- at the border--" The cats who'd gathered behind Birdstar started murmuring to each other "Who? Who?"
"Redstar!" Littlepetal answered them all. The silver tabby's eyes flashed, and she stepped forward to inform their leader of who was at the LightningClan-StoneClan line. The small she-cat reminded Birdstar much of his predecessor Smokestar, and she hadn't taken Frostpaw's death well. The apprentice's transformation into a strong and capable warrior was cut short because of some LightningClanner's ambition.
Birdstar's eyebrows knit together. "I'm going," he responded immediately, cutting short the murmurs and angry growls. "Show me where," he ordered the patrol, and they hurried off with the gray leader in their company. Birdstar felt a burgeoning sense of unease. This would be his first confrontation as leader. Who knew if things would turn for the worse like that fateful skirmish day when his clanmates had come back with a dreadfully wounded Frostpaw.
The dirt gave way to pebbles and stones as they closed in on the Sun Stones. Birdstar smelled a scent there, but it smelled of a myriad of things. He didn't know Redstar's scent well enough to recognize it but he knew what the tom looked like. The leader of LightningClan was nearly twice his age. He'd been deputy when Birdpaw had gone to his first ever Gathering. In truth, he did not know much about the other leader.
This meeting could change that.
He dropped back slightly and let his patrollers reenter the situation first, trying to ascertain the possibility of another ambush. His beryl eyes washed around the highly contested territory before finding Redstar. He could tell his clanmates were itching for him to lay into the other tom at first sight, but Birdstar was not Smokestar and did not allow pride to rule him. He would hear what Redstar had to say about all this, that way he could prepare his words in time instead of speaking rashly. He channeled all of the strength his nine lives imbued him with. StarClan, go with me..., he asked of them.
His tail lashed like a whiptail lizard. Birdstar steeled himself for whatever Redstar would say and stared directly at the cat who had his warriors in such a tizzy.
"Greetings, Redstar," he remarked. He could ignore the humidity clinging to the air.
