A gentle breeze ruffled the grass of the Star Field, whispering warnings to the prey sheltered there that a sleek sooty pelted figure was padding gently across the meadow. No warm scents reached the hunter's nose as he advanced, slinking like a shadow through the swaying blades as he waited for the moment the wind turned in his favour; spilling the secrets tucked safely away in the grassland. Or so they thought, presently.

Emberheart's ears twitched as they strained to pick up tell-tale sounds, dusk beginning to close in and painting the land in soft darkness. A thread of hope wove itself through him, the darkening conditions would mean that his already sooty pelt would be an asset; even with the smatterings of coppery-brown fur that betrayed his penchant for sunbathing dotting his coat. He stilled, taking root like a tree as the warm, airy scent of a bird was gifted to him by the gentle wind. The usually hyperactive warrior listened for a moment longer, cross-referencing what he could hear with what he could smell and cautiously − oh so cautiously − raised a forepaw. His heart thumped steadily as he took a glacial step, followed by another, and another...

His breathing slowed as he approached it; low to the ground and careful not to disturb anything lest the wind betray him to his quarry. The sound of its own feet scuffling in the turf greeted him as he honed in on the target and for the briefest of moments his world slowed. There was only him, and the quail.

Soon, there'd be only him.

When he was sure of the bird's location he bunched his muscles, shifting easily into a final variant of the hunter's crouch and springing at it. His paws wrapped around it, claws sneaking out to silence its final cries as he delivered a neat bite to its neck.

And just like that, the serious hunter was gone and Emberheart was back in his place. "Yes!" he hissed happily, tail whipping to and fro in glee. "You're going to make a tasty treat Mr. Quail, just you wait til I take you back to camp!"
