Jaggedthorn stood stone-still, fur ruffling down his spine and tail flicking restlessly side to side. One side of his muzzle curled up, showing off a pointed fang, and his ears went flat back. He didn’t move, because he had stumbled the one time he’d tried to take a step, his inability to feel just when his paw touched earth leading him to try to take that step before he had his balance. Better to stand still than give his brother a wide open opportunity to catch him off guard.
His gaze never left Alderfrost’s face, except that one time he’d staggered, but the moment he had been back on stable paws he’d resumed the fixed stare. It was impossible to know what thoughts were brewing behind his brother's bland expression, but if Jaggedthorn knew him (and he did) then it was most likely a steady measure of Jaggedthorn's posture, a recitation of his strengths and weaknesses, and a perusal of just how to start. Alderfrost knew battle, was good at it, and Jaggedthorn knew it. This might only be a spar, but the older, bigger tom had never been one to go easy even on his Clanmates- even on his kin.
"If it weren't for your fur moving in the breeze, I'd think you'd turned to stone on the outside too." Half-quip, half-observation: not for nothing had Alderfrost received his name, and he might not join in on the banter or react to it, but then, baiting cats with barbs aimed at their ego was just how Jaggedthorn liked to play the game.
