There's this love that is burning, deep in my soul Much had changed for Squirrelheart in the long moons since she'd first left the Nursery. She was older and wiser now, no longer afraid of her own shadow and she was a confident Warrior in her own right able to hunt and defend her clan. She had her troubles; her confusion over a certain tom being the main one, but that was all part of life.
Today, she was heading back to watch the frogs in the Muddy Pools and maybe catch one since she certainly didn't mind getting her fur wet and dirty. She stretched, feeling the slight pull from old scars given to her by an irate mother fox she'd faced down to give a clan-mate time to escape. He'd been furious at her that day, but she still would do it all over again if she had to.
For now though, she was going to find a branch and watch the frogs for a bit. Lights steps led the golden she-cat to her desired destination and she was quick to jump onto her favorite branch and settle there, listening to the croaking of the frogs and the quite of the day. She'd already hunted for the clan and it wasn't her turn to do patrols, so she was free for once to just enjoy the territory that was her home. Constantly yearning to get out of control

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Forty-Two Moons
WORDS count here NOTES say something nice |
Starlingcry, Gracklestrike and his brother Ashfang had joined him on a patrol. An odd family reunion, not that it bothered Coalmask much. Gracklestrike chattered off and on about her exploits. The mention of a tribe cat seemed to catch his mother's interest. The older she-cat attempted to coax more out of Gracklestrike about the cat. His niece refused. She only mentioned the beating she gave him not the reason why the tom had ventured so close to the NightClan territory.
Coalmask quickly tuned them both out. Distracted for a moment by the scent caught in the wind. "I'll catch up later," He told his family. Not bothering to gain his mother's approval before disappearing.
Through the thicket and avoiding the worse of the mud puddles. Coalmask managed to jump onto a few low growing tree limbs and fallen trees to aid in his travel. Arriving at the muddy pool, Coalmask saw her from a few fox-lengths away.
Up and over various sided perches, Coalmask managed to join up with Squirrelheart. His expression was wide and eager.
Squirrelheart! Feels like ages since I've gotten a chance to see you!" He purred, his large plume of a tail flicking happily upon seeing her. "How are you?" He added, careful in where he jumped before joining her on the branch she had already claimed.

There's this love that is burning, deep in my soul She scented him well before he called out to her and Squirrelheart stretched and settled herself, long fluffy tail twitching slowly as her friend approached. Coalmask and she had an...interesting relationship to say the least. Still, it went against her nature to be rude and he hadn't done anything wrong besides that.
She also thought it was hilarious how hard he worked to avoid the muddy puddles and remembered he didn't like getting his fur dirty. Too bad for him she loved this place. She purred and flicked her fluffy tail at him in greeting. "Hello Coalmask, it definitely has been a while. How have you been? I've been busy keeping up with things, but I didn't have much to do today so I came here. It's my favorite place to catch frogs."
She also preferred to avoid her family if she could as they tended to be more judgmental than she liked with their hero worship of her sister. She loved them though so it couldn't be helped. Still, it as good to see Coalmask so long as he didn't bring up the subject of the old breeding regulations and how they could have strong kits together ever again. It was...very rude and rubbed her fur the wrong way. She preferred love, thank you very much. Constantly yearning to get out of control

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Forty-Two Moons
WORDS count here NOTES say something nice |
He smiled easily when around Squirrelheart. He chuckled as she brought up frogs and the muddy pool. His most recent adventure with Brindlemask had resulted in him getting stuck under a sinking tree. Not something he wanted to repeat but then again if Squrrielheart asked he'd likely put his worries aside. Any excuse to keep her smiling and to help rewrite the awkward spat from moons ago.
Guilt still sat every in Coalmask's belly each time he looked at Squirrelheart. How ugly that fight had been. With the birth of Sootfeather's kits, his mother backed off. Now that those kits were warriors, it seemed Starlingcry didn't care altogether. Coalmask far more free to do as he pleased.
What a relief that was.
"I've been alright, grateful now that Sootfeather's kits are warriors. Training Gracklestrike was a chore. It amazes me that she hasn't tried to take on TreeClan by herself," He spoke fondly of his niece.
"I'd join you in hunting for frogs but the last time I was out here the muddy pools tried to eat me alive," He chuckled with the phrase. "Frogs have never been my favorite prey, I'm much more a bird cat or maybe a mouse," He glanced upward when a distant bird cry caught his attention. A warning cry, someone had failed their hunt. With leafbare approaching any missed meals meant future hungry bellies. Not that it mattered to him, he'd proudly give up a meal or venture into unknown territory to get one. Borders damned when it came to the health of his Clanmates.
There was little he wouldn't do for his clanmates. Risking his life was simply part of his duties as a warrior. Then came the thought of Squirrelheart in such a condition. He'd likely scale the mountains in search of food. Anything to keep her health in leafbare. The idea startled him. Devoted to Squirrelheart's health hadn't been something he considered in such a long time. Deeming it not his place after their fight, but given the fact she hadn't shooed him away. Coalmask hoped all was forgiven. He wanted to be forgotten.
"I missed talking to you, He confessed quietly, half wishing he could pull the words back when he spoke them.

There's this love that is burning, deep in my soul Squirrelheart flicked her tail casually, quietly amused by the relief her clan-mate seemed to have from just talking to her. He was the one to do something so stupid as to chase her off, but she wasn't a cat to hold grudges. So long as he didn't say something that horrible to her again, she'd say all was forgiven; especially as he didn't sit on her after the incident with the pregnant fox.
She snorted out in laughter at the mention of the tree trying to eat him and frogs not being his thing. She gently swatted him with her tail and purred at him, happy and content for the moment. "Mud and trees do tend to eat the unwary, but I'm glad you weren't hurt. And frogs aren't for everyone, but they have became my favorite as they remind me greatly of the day we met."
And it reminded her how much Coalmask hated the mud and being dirty; where-as she didn't care one bit. It was something she found endlessly amusing about him and often gave her the urge to nudge him into the mud just to see his disgusted reaction. His next quiet words had her looking up at him considerately, amber eyes focused on him even as he looked as if he might swallow his tongue for the desire to take back what he spoke. Sighing to herself, Squirrelheart decided to be true to her nature and give the poor tom less to worry about.
That in mind, she shifted and purred to him again, licking the top of his head affectionately and gently swatting him with her tail again to try and calm him down. She smiled for him, and spoke her mind. Because she knew what he hadn't said and she felt the same way. So she'd say it first. "I've missed you too, Coalmask." Constantly yearning to get out of control

His gaze widened for a moment, returning to their normal expression within a fraction of a second. The idea of someone wanting to remember the first time they met, like acutally conversed, amazed him. Squirrelheart continued to exceed all expectations.
He loved that about her.
Wait, loved?
Coalmask's expression shifted slightly, eyes falling to the ground. He avoided her gaze, afraid his pale color orbs would betray the sudden realization. He knew it had been lurking in the back of his mind for moons. But putting the word to the feelings made it real, made it fragile.
His mother would have his ears if he voiced the revelation. She'd cuff his ears for being foolish, remind him that emotions in relationships only made things worse.
Ears flicking to rid himself of the thoughts of his mother, Coalmask managed to relax enough to smile back as she mentioned she missed him too. The hope she might have some inkling of similar feelings was tucked away for a better time. The gray and black coated tom unwilling to taint such a pleasant moment.
"Have you talked to Rainfall about getting an apprentice? I'm sure you'd be a great mentor," He carried the conversation to something surface level, easier to maintain his composure.

There's this love that is burning, deep in my soul Squirrelheart watched in quiet bemusement as a multitude of emotions ran across her companion's face and shined brightly out of his eyes. She wondered, not for the first time, if Coalmask knew just how telling his expression were sometimes. Perhaps it was why he avoided her gaze for some time a moment later, and if so that made her wonder what he'd felt that seemed to have embarrassed him so. She supposed it was none of her business, but she was curious just the same.
She flicked her tail again as he changed the topic of conversation and after a mental sigh and the strangeness of toms, she gave him an answer. "I haven't really thought about becoming a Mentor really. I figured when it was time it would happen and not before then. I heard you made an excellent Mentor though, so do you intend to do so again or was one enough?" She honestly found it amusing some of the things she'd heard about the apprentice he'd trained, but that was another matter altogether.
Amber eyes watched her companion closely for a long moment, and a spike of worry filled her. Was something bothering him? They'd been friends a long time, and she wasn't usually one to hold a grudge even if the reason had been a valid one. Also it went against her nature to not be concerned for a clan-mate; let alone a friend. So she gently brushed her cheek against his and settled back again, making sure to meet his eyes as she asked her question in a tone beginning to show worry. "Coalmask, you seem troubled by something. Is everything alright?" Constantly yearning to get out of control

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Forty-Two Moons
WORDS count here NOTES i let him ramble..sorry |
Thankful she kept the topic about mentoring. Coalmask counted the different shades of color he saw. Allowing the numerical ask to soothe him enough to refocus on Squirrelheart. Which didn't help.
Caught up in her honey-hued eyes, Coalmask wondered if it was possible to drown in them. Logically speaking, his usual mode of conversation, it was impossible. However, logic had no standing when emotions pooled in his belly. His clear and level headed nature slipped away. Leaving the rest of him to sink deeper into honey. A peaceful place to be.
Her question was almost missed, the grey and black tom blinked a few times to recalibrate. Putting two and two together, he managed a half thought out reply.
Yeah," His word came out dull, distracted even. Internally scrambling to pull himself together, Coalmask opened his mouth again. Relief washing over him when a more complete statement came from him. "I think I did alright, they became a warrior. I think I'm better at helping. I'm not that strong of a fighter to train another cat to be one. Then again Ashfang was able to help, which was nice," Coalmask mentioned his brother easily, having grown especially close with his sibling since their sister's death. "If I was a mentor again I'd like to do a sort of co-op deal with another cat. The trade-off, no one is the perfect warrior, everyone has their own set of skills," Easing his way from the distraction that was Squirrelheart's eyes. Coalmask found renewed comfort in speaking about general things in Clan's life. Safe topics.
Not that it lasted long. Squirrelheart's question reminded him that no amount of wishing or wanting for something would make it true. Coalmask's expressions had given him away and the ever-attentive Squirrelheart caught on. To no surprised. Coalmask half expected her to.
Shying away for a moment, he thought about excusing himself. Offering some lame reason to why he had to leave at that moment, but his loyalty to Squirrelheart prevented that. He had to stay by her side.
"Everything is alright, I just have a lot going on," Awhile his answer remained mostly honest, Coalmask looked away once more. Doing his best to avoid her catching on. "You don't have to worry about me," His poor attempt at comfort was helped along by a genuine purr. The plume of his lush tail flicking over her shoulder. A carefully framed smile covering up his earlier expressions.

There's this love that is burning, deep in my soul Amber eyes narrowed at her companion as she took note of his changed posture and general state of distraction. She also noticed that he was trying hard not to look at her directly. Her fluffy tail flicked in agitation and worried concern before she wondered if she'd done something wrong. He said he was just busy and had a lot going on, but she'd known this tom since she'd first become an Apprentice and knew his tells pretty well by now. Some part of his statement wasn't the truth; or not completely at least.
Coalmask seemed ill-at-ease around her and she wondered in a brief moment of panic if she'd hurt his feelings somehow but that was silly as this was the first time they'd really interacted closely in more than a few moons. So she took in his tight expression and forced smile as well as the purr he gave her - that, at least, was genuine - and sighing to herself before deciding what she was going to do. Shifting on the wide branch they rested on, she turned slightly, rising up into a sitting position before settling her head against her companions back and giving him a quiet, gentle purr.
"Something's wrong, I can tell. You're distracted and look like you're either in pain, constipated, or very upset. If I said something wrong I'm sorry. If you need to talk about something, I'm willing to listen if that's what you need. But just...Coalmask don't look at me and smile like you feel the world is ending and you're in pain because of it. I'm here, I'm with you, and I'm not going anywhere." They had their disagreements and their ups and downs, but this...forced smile made her heart sink and had her worried out of her mind for her dearest friend. She licked the back of his head gently, purring quietly in the hopes it would bring him comfort. This was in her nature, it was part of who she was. Coalmask was upset and she wanted to fix it if it was at all possible. And if someone had hurt him...well they'd soon face the sharp end of her claws and teeth.
The vicious thought was unlike her and thus it was very jarring for the normally sweet dispositioned she-cat, but she'd always felt strongly about things and that translated into all aspects of her life. She'd sort this out with Coalmask, and then see who she had to go and destroy if someone had dared to hurt him. Constantly yearning to get out of control

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Forty-Two Moons
TAG @name WORDS count here NOTES say something nice |
He watched her honey eyes narrow, his stomach fluttered for all the wrong reasons. She seemed concerned, it eased the butterfly in his stomach. Calmed it down enough that he could ignore it.
Not that he had any hopes of ignoring it for long, the gentle press of her head against his back caused the butterfly to morph into a full-grown bird. Eager to open his tummy and let forth a beautiful love song.
Swallowing loudly to keep himself under control, Coalmask visibly fought to hold onto his composure. Claws extended into the tree bark, his body like a stone. All over tense in a poor attempt to keep it together. She knew something wasn't right but did she know the effect she had on him? He doubted it. Not because he thought of her as dense, in fact, he thought the opposite. She easily bared her emotions. The passion she alluded in everything she did easily rivaled the sun.
He wanted to bask in her company, forget the NightClan ways of loving the darkness.
His dilemma only worsened as she pointed out everything she noticed. Coalmask's brow rose for a moment, her attention to detail quite impressive.
Her words seemed painfully sincere. He wanted to tell her everything, but fear and his mother's cruel upbringing came crashing back to him. Reminding him how terrible it would be if he ever confessed.
Lessons of lost loves and dead mates were told him like scary ghost stories. Meant to teach him that emotions were meant to be pushed down. Starlingcry insisted her kits didn't get caught up in such silly things. She wanted fighters, not lovers. Loyalty to NightClan should be his only motivation to live.
'I want to live for her,'
The thought came to him like a warm beam of light into his chest, a warming sensation. "Isn't that what love feels like?". He asked his inner self, which offered no answer. He remained lost in the unmarked territory with only a few things for certain.
He wanted to live for Squirrelheart and he didn't want her to worry.
Another soft smile came across his face when he realized both his goals involved the she-cat who spoke to him so fondly. The gentle swipe of her tongue to the back of his head, made his smile widen and his eyes close. His purr growing louder.
His mother's warning and cruel examples of broken relationships threatened to charge into him. Remind him why he kept cats at tail length.
Not anymore.
Squirrelheart's promise to stay with him was enough to seal the deal. It could go one of two ways. They live happily ever after as mates and pray they both joined StarClan together or they didn't and Coalmask would go on, having learned his mother's lessons the hard way. As long as neither of them died in the near future he could live with either outcome. Even passing glances of her would be enough.
Electing to forgo his mother's upbringing, Coalmask drew away from Squirrelheart. Not to far to avoid her wrongfully assuming he was pulling away entirely. With the new space between them, Coalmask carefully pressed his nose to her nose. A shortlived romantic gesture.
"I'm distracted because you are captivating. I'm upset because you are proof I was raised upon lies. My world is ending because of you, Squirrelheart. It's ending because I'm too afraid you will one day be gone and the little bit of sunshine I get will go with you," His confession made his voice waver, the grey and black tom-cat once again dropping his gaze. "I don't love you Squirrielheart, I need you. With every breath in my lungs and every beat of my heart I need you," Surprised by his admission, Coalmask untangled himself from the she-cat. Putting an even larger bubble of space between them. His heart pounding, threatening to burst from his chest.
The overwhelming sense of being out of control made his skin itch. The urge to run and hide fought to take over his body. It painfully won out.
"I'm sorry, I should go," His partings words were left there as he eased himself off the branch, attempting to disappear to lose himself in the undergrowth.
