Greenleaf 15 -------------- It had made sense for him to come into the nursery to do this check, mostly so that he could be surrounded by the one thing that soothed him these days within this clan; the kits. The queens greeted him and the kits that were big enough loved playing in his fluff and pouncing his tail. It made him happy to entertain them, and at the same time he could examine the kits as he needed to. Also, at times, their high strung mothers. Some queens were more stressed out than others, which was why he'd shooed the mother of these particular kits from the nursery the second he got there. So that he could look them over without her hovering over him like a hawk. Each kit seemed bright eyed and alert, but something about Asterkit seemed off right from the start. He didn't immediately worry about it and continued his examination. His method of examining kits was a little out of the ordinary, but it worked. He rolled each one over and plodded his paw along their little bodies gently, checking for any abnormalities in their pelt or bones or for any signs of malnutrition. Even with a doting mother, sometimes a kit's body didn't accept nutrition the same way and they needed a little extra attention. When the first two examinations were finished he flicked his tail at them along the nursery floor so that they could pounce it if they chose. Keep them entertained while he leaned over and quickly cleaned out Asterkit's ears before clicking right next to said ear. The sound was sharp and loud, and he noticed several pairs of ears turn towards him in curiosity. His main concern, for Asterkit, as the youngster sometimes seemed like he was off in his own little world, and he wanted to make sure there wasn't some alternative reason for this. Plus a click test was common for him to do. Mostly because it was hilarious some of the expressions kits made when he did it. ♛ 𝔽𝕒𝕓𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 Fawn BlooRey DVD

Asterkit 5 Moons || TreeClan || Kit A new face came to the nursery today, an unexpected visitor that Asterkit had at first been oblivious to. But the tang of herbs in the air drew his attention, and his bright blue eyes looked curiously upon the face of the large tom who pushed into the small, secluded den. Birchkit shoved past him towards the newcomer, but Asterkit barely squeaked in indignation. He always tolerated his brother's pushing and shoving nature. He had seen this tom many times before, and he always carried that haunting scent of strong-smelling plants. He watched Appleshade leave with a pang of confusion, and started to follow his mother, but his brother stepped in front of him to block his path, a look of bewilderment and scorn crossing his face. Asterkit didn't understand that look, but he was starting to realise it meant he was doing something wrong. So, he stayed. His eyes lit up when Falconstorm trailed his tail in front of them as a game. He and his littermates were getting older, but there would definitely never be a moment where they would refuse such a tantalising offer. Asterkit threw himself forward, trying to pin the rather fluffy tail beneath his small white paws.
Asterkit squeaked in surprise and protest when Falconstorm rolled him over. Thinking it was part of the game, he kept trying to regain his feet, only to be rolled back over again. The poking and prodding was ticklish, hence the wriggling, and he thought that was the idea. He battered Falconstorm's paws with his own paws, a look of quiet determination crossing his features, the same look he had every time he play-fought his larger brother. Each time, he lost, no matter how determined he was. When he was allowed stand once more, Asterkit was glad. The fact that he couldn't exactly fend off the larger cat only frustrated him, and he didn't find that part of the game rather fun. He sat up and watched Birchkit and Snowkit swipe at the swooping tail, waiting for his opportunity to join in. He felt Falconstorm's breath stir the fur around his ear, but did not react to it, keeping his intense blue gaze fixed on the medicine cat's tail. Can't you see I'm trying ?

Falconstorm frowned when the kit failed to react to the sharp clicks he put right next to his ears. It seemed the little tom was only interested in pouncing practice on his tail, which he let him do, eventually flattening the appendage flat to the ground to show that it had been 'caught' and 'conquered' by the pile of kits. It didn't seem like Asterkit's ears were infected or clogged, so the next logical conclusion he came to was that somehow the young kit had lost his hearing. If he had been born with hearing at all. He'd have to ask his parents to find out for sure. If the little one had acted the same since his birth, never reacted to noise or sound near him, then it was very possible. Lionstar's daughter had been born without the ability to see, so it was very reasonable that Asterkit had been born without the ability to hear. As rare as it was, it was certainly possible. He'd have to ask more questions to be certain. ♛ 𝔽𝕒𝕓𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟

Asterkit 5 Moons || TreeClan || Kit Asterkit was delighted when Falconstorm stopped attempting to roll him over. It seemed the tom recognised at last that all Asterkit wanted to do was pounce on the fluffy tail that trailed behind him. His littermates bustled into him as he attempted to join them in bombarding the tail, but that didn’t seem to curb his confidence in the least. He pinned the fluff with his small white paws, triumphant. He waited for Falconstorm to attempt to pull his tail free, to yank it away and continued his game. But when he lifted his gaze to the tom, Asterkit noticed that his eyes were focused on some point in the distance, deep in thought.
Alarmed, Asterkit released the tail. It wasn’t the strange look that cats had been giving him for as long as he could remember, though. He could detect worry in that perplexed frown, but not the same bewildered fear he had seen flash through his mother’s eyes, again and again. Asterkit did what he had learned to do each time his mother gave him that alarmed stare. A purr vibrated deep in his chest, and he brushed his lanky body into Falconstorm’s side, as though to pull his attention away from whatever was distracting him from their game.

The tom startled and smiled at the young kit, sorry that he'd upset him. He pulled the kit over a little and rubbed his head against him, purring loudly and vibrantly so that even if it couldn't be heard the vibrating in his body would be felt. Asterkit was a good sort, and was otherwise healthy. After a good cuddle, which also had the side effect of making him feel slightly better himself, the big tom decided to entertain the litter for some additional time just to have absolute certainty in his diagnosis. Falconstorm played with the kits for a little while longer, every so often clicking to see if there was any reaction whatsoever and only seeming to get it from the other kits in the litter. Once he felt he'd tired them out enough, however, he rose carefully and nosed them back into their nest and headed for the entrance to the nursery. He needed to talk to Asterkit's parents. ♛ 𝔽𝕒𝕓𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 Fawn BlooRey DVD

Appleshade, 82 Moons, TreeClan, Queen I dare you to let me be your one and only Her babies were safe with Falconstorm. Perfectly safe. Perfectly healthy. Then what's taking so long? Agonized a voice inside of Appleshade's head. She had no frame of reference for how long a nursery check-up usually took, and the wait was killing her. Was this normal? Was this abnormal? Appleshade's cinnamon-sorrel tail swept to and fro in elegant - though twitchy - fashion as the queen was unable to settle her nerves. To her credit, she wasn't talking Skyfall's ear off at a mile per minute, so that was something.
Or not.
"Do you think it's going alright? You don't think he's noticed anything odd, do you? He'd tell us, wouldn't he?" Appleshade's eyes were large and earnest, rimmed with lighter fur that seemed to give her a permanent look of startlement - at least when she wasn't all flutter and charm. All thoughts of sparing Skyfall her frantic inner diatribe seemed to be forgotten, however, as she waited for her barrage of questions to reach her mate.
Any answer he came up with was only half-heard as Falconstorm appeared, and Appleshade whipped her head around, quick as lightning. The queen was in front of him in an instant, breathless. "How are they?" Snowkit had coughed a little this morning but surely that was from a hairball, not anything deadly. Surely she'd have noticed if her own kit was catching something! Birchkit seemed perfectly fine, thank the stars, and then there was Asterkit...
Appleshade, as if she'd been dunked into a stream of cold water, collected herself with a deep breath. "Thank you for looking after our little ones," she managed a smile, as if that might fend off any bad news her maternal instincts told her might be coming. "I'm sure the check-up went well. Don't you think, Skyfall? I think it went wonderfully." She couldn't help a bit of dithering, torn between dread and denial.

"Your kits are all fat, healthy, and happy. Rambunctious and their energy is good. I took the liberty of wearing them out a little bit for you before coming out, which is what took so long. I apologize for that. Snowkit and Birchkit are perfect, right on track for their age, and should be fine to become apprentices when their time comes, barring any unforeseen circumstances. My concern is for Asterkit." He sat down to speak with the two parents, knowing that it could take awhile and that Appleshade, at least, could be high strung when it came to her offspring. "While Asterkit is physically fine I am concerned with his hearing. His ears don't react at all to any sound, and I strongly suspect he's completely without his hearing." He gave the news a moment to sink in, though he didn't feel this was all that grave. While a hearing impaired apprentice was tricky, he didn't believe it meant Asterkit couldn't go on to become a perfectly adapted and capable member of TreeClan when he grew up. "There is nothing that you did wrong, either of you. Sometimes this just happens, and it isn't anyone's fault. If anything, it may be StarClan's desire to offer you a kit that needs a bit more attention than a normal kit. He'll need very specific training when the time comes, and before then he should be taught how to communicate with others in a way that he can understand too. Silentsong may be able to help you with that. Make sure any cat trying to communicate has him facing them so that he can learn to read what we are saying slowly. I don't expect this to keep him from going on to apprenticeship, he just needs some preparations in the meantime." ♛ 𝔽𝕒𝕓𝕣𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟BlooRey DVDFawn

Asterkit 5 Moons || TreeClan || Kit The silent kit felt a twinge of anxiety as he stepped out of the medicine den after Falconstorm. Awaiting him was the flustered, worried face of his mother, with Skyfall sitting nearby. He didn't miss the way her lips moved in a quick, jittery fashion, feathered tail twitching and flicking. That smile that played on her features was full of nothing but worry, and Asterkit hung his head in shame so he wouldn't have to see it. He knew he did something wrong. She was upset again, and it was all his fault. The small white tom shuffled his paws, blue eyes searching the smooth earth for anything else to pay attention to.
He quickly found it. His gaze fixed on a jagged pebble, laying discarded on the ground. All thoughts of how he had disappointed his mother slid from his mind as he launched himself onto the stone, pinning it beneath a delicate paw. His eyes flickered once to Falconstorm and his parents, checking to see if they were watching him, before he rolled himself over on his back and batted his rock into the air gleefully. A blur of white fur flashed in the corner of his vision, and Asterkit bristled with indignant fury as Birchkit made away with the stolen toy. Springing to his feet, the gangly white tom-kit hurtled after his brother, determined to reclaim his prize.
