The sun had begun to rise, golden streams of light pouring through the clouds beside the rainfall. Still warm, but not too hot thanks to the rain, it was the perfect morning for a walk.
Gracefully, Emberlight hopped about from rock to rock to look for the perfect place to sit and watch the remainder of the sunrise. However, none of them had that perfect view that the Abyssinian warrior had been hoping for.
As the sun continued to rise, Emberlight's movements became quicker in the hopes of finding a good spot before the sun was all the way up in the sky. Each new place had something terribly wrong with it. One of the rocks had an okay view, but was so terribly uncomfortable that the ruddy tom couldn't bear to stay on it for longer than a few breaths. Another was perfect: smooth and warm, but the view was completely blocked by a stray tree. How oddly inconvenient.
I know one place where there is a plethora of smooth stones and few trees. Emberlight smiled coyly before sprinting along the river, getting closer and closer to the border between Stoneclan and Rainclan. At the stone stream, there were large round rocks everywhere and barely a tree in sight. The petite tom had almost completely forgotten about it. If I hurry, I should make it there in time.
As he ran, Emberlight spotted the dawn patrol heading back towards the heart of Rainclan's territory. As of right now, Stoneclan had not been a big issue for Rainclan, so the patrols never paid much attention to the borders, sometimes neglecting them completely. It was sloppy, the tom thought, but it didn't seem to matter too much at the moment. Hawkstar was a very respectable leader who did not seem the type to launch an unprovoked attack.
Almost immediately after reaching the stone stream, Emberlight saw the perfect rock. It even looked as if it were sent from Starclan, for the light was hitting it in a way to form a halo-effect. With a giddy smile, the Abyssinian warrior leaped from rock to rock beside the stream until he was on his perfect rock.
With a content sigh, the warrior sat down and curled his tail around his paws, looking out towards the sunrise. The rays of light reflected on the clear water, brightening the whole stream. Birds in the distance had begun to sing. This was the moment Emberlight had wanted to witness. The sun waking up the world with gentle rays of warmth and comfort. The tom himself felt vitalized by the light as it ran over him, the warmth filling up every vein. Breathing in the fresh morning air cleared his mind of all worries, of all conflict. Everything was beautiful, and everything was golden.
A sudden movement caught his eye from Stoneclan's side of the border. Not wishing to open the conversation in a rude way, Emberlight instead decided to take his tone to the opposite extreme. "Hello there!" He flicked his tail to beckon beside him on the rock. "Care to turn a stranger into a friend?"

"Oh owl pellets!" Honeynose skidded to a stop as the vole she'd been chasing darted through a tiny fissure in the rocks where no cat paws could follow. Her slender tabby sides were heaving in and out, the she-cat not built for long sprinting periods - but her desperation to catch something before the heat of sunhigh set in had pushed her onwards. She could not wrestle with raptors like Herondive, but her tracking skills were some of the best in the Clan.
So she tried to utilize it as much as possible, though the rain - both a blessing and curse - had made even that talent seem more like luck.
So much dry air in her lungs and through her nose had parched her, and the warrioress kicked up clouds of dust as she maneuvered her way towards the stone stream, already picturing the cool fresh waters trickling over smooth pebbles. Had to get there before the heat of the day warmed the water, making it nigh undrinkable.
There was plenty of time before sunhigh, but Honeynose felt a sense of urgency. She needed to take Goldenpaw out for more training later - and Honeynose, not the best at managing her time wisely, was trying to do as much as she could for the Clan before she lost her chance. If I catch something soon, I'll be free to nap through sunhigh. Honeynose groaned in anticipation of the cool stone and moss of the warriors' den.
Honeynose didn't consider herself a morning person. Not by a long shot.
The stone stream was in reach, and some of her open tiredness had receded, though her throat still ached for cool fresh water. Something radiant and golden drew Honeynose's gaze away from the tantilizing water; it was a cat with fur lit by the sun, as golden as the dawn cresting through the thin trees behind them. Honeynose's heart fluttered in surprise, one paw raised, whiskers still as she gawked at the unfamiliar sight.
S-StarClan?
"Hello there!"
The spell was broken by a masculine voice, and Honeynose flushed crimson beneath her pelt. Of course it wasn't a StarClan cat, for goodness sake. You're so silly sometimes, Honeynose. That's why Vipertail doesn't think of you as anything more than his sister's friend... That mental scolding hurt more than she'd anticipated, but the cat's welcome invitation wouldn't let her dwell on it.
"Care to turn a stranger into a friend?"
"S-Sure! I'm Honeynose. I don't think I've ever met you before, I'm sorry - I don't know your name." Honeynose's smile was bashful but sincere, her heart racing at the unexpected kindness shown at the border. StoneClan had had issues with RainClan in the past, but that seemed to be where they'd left them. Honeynose stepped closer until the damp stream bank brushed against snow white paws. Did he want her to join him on the rock, or stay here? Honeynose leaned down for a few much needed mouthfuls of water, shaking her muzzle to rid it of any droplets clinging to her whiskers. Honeynose plucked up her courage, asking sweetly. "May I join you?"
She still needed to catch her breath after that failed hunt. It would be rude not to take a few moments and chat with the RainClan warrior who had been so polite. Warrior || 45 Moons || StoneClan Honeynose Ginger || Made by Fawn || 550 Words

Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." Emberlight turned his head to face the cat he had addressed, his gaze warm and welcoming. She seemed rather shell-shocked. Probably because no one ever wants friends in other clans these days.
Honeynose. What a fitting name. Her nose seemingly dipped in the sweet amber substance, warming up her entire face. As the sun hit the rest of her pelt, even the brown seemed to become warmer, beckoning for souls to come near it. Her voice, her posture, but most noticeably, her eyes seemed...old. Not in the way most would describe the term, but Honeynose's entire body showed that there was a soul very experienced in both pain and joy. One that had been broken and healed many times. To Emberlight, those were the most beautiful souls, for they knew the importance of friendship and love. He too had an old soul, but his body was slowly starting to catch up with it. "Well, Honeynose, it's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Emberlight."
A lighthearted chuckle escaped from Emberlight's lips at Honeynose's question. "One of life's greatest pleasures is to share a moment with someone different from you. Yes, come join me."
Emberlight turned once again to watch the sun as it came up. It was incredible how something so big and far away could fill the world and everything in it with so much life. It gave the golden warrior a sense of great fulfillment to know it was the same sun that every cat looked to in the morning; it reminded him that they were all the same, just trying to make it through each day.
There was no need for small talk with this she-cat. Honeynose was very intriguing to Emberlight, so he saw no need to ask about trivial matters like "what brought you here?" He knew that she had her reasons and he had his, and all that mattered was that the two cats crossed points in a moment of breathless serendipity. "It seems so odd that either this tiny yet breathtaking stream is a different world. From the middle of the stream, both sides look to be of the same world." With a twinkle in his eye, he added, "But I may just be some silly fool who cannot discern the world of Rainclan from the world of Stoneclan." Looking at Honeynose, he tilted his head inquiringly. "What is it you see when you look out upon this stream?"

Emberlight! What a warm, friendly name. It suited him well, too; even though the glow on his pelt was a little less startling up close, Honeynose still couldn't help but admire how radiant he was upon the stream rocks. Honeynose lurched ever so slightly - rough pads unused to slick stone - but caught herself, holding her breath as she tiptoed from stone to stone, until she was at the tom's side. He was wholly RainClan, she could tell by the distinctive fishy odor that hung around him like an invisible cloud. The smell made her nose twitch, but Honeynose told herself she didn't mind.
She couldn't mind, not when he was being so friendly. He could have smelled like three-day-old prey and the StoneClan warrioress would still have done her best to stay beside him.
There was no small talk, which again caught Honeynose off guard, her large eyes appearing larger as she mentally tried to keep up with the abrupt, deepfelt conversation. Emberlight spoke as if they'd known each other their whole lives, making an observation - a poetic, thoughtful one - about the stream and what it represented. Honeynose felt butterflies burst in her belly, stirred up by this rare and exciting moment. I've never met a cat like him. He's so different.
Emberlight saw no differences, but Honeynose certainly did. The land on Emberlight's side had less of a rock-strewn look to it, and there was a greenness to the area that StoneClan simply didn't have. Although... Honeynose studied each territory, noticing how the space on either side of the stream didn't seem so different after all... Maybe I'm so used to the way things are, that I can't unsee territories? That must be what loners saw, when they walked through this valley.
Just land, for miles upon miles. None of these boundaries and landmarks that belonged to this Clan or that Clan. It piqued Honeynose's imagination, and for a pawful of moments, she envisioned herself as a spry young longer - wise enough to survive on her own, and unbothered by things like a Code or rules. It was a strange life, surely, but there was freedom from boredom in imagining these things.
"What is it you see when you look out upon this stream?"
"Water," said Honeynose without thinking. As if struck on the head by a small stone, Honeynose winced and tried for a quick save. "Water and--what I mean to say is, I see... something that connects everyone all over the valley. The stream leads back to the river, right?" With a nervous tail-twitch, the she-cat stole a sheepish glance at Emberlight under her lashes. "And the river flows through all the territories and right around StarClan's Claws. That must mean something, mustn't it? I-I like to think so, at least." Warrior || 45 Moons || StoneClan Honeynose Ginger || Made by Fawn || 464 Words

Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." Emberlight let out a soft chuckle at Honeynose's immediate response. Indeed, there was water. Where there was water, there was life. Even in this tiny stream, small fish swam about, ignorant and unafraid. Some of those fish would look real good on top of the fresh-kill pile.
As Honeynose refined and elaborated her answer, Emberlight blinked in pleasant surprise. There were not many cats who could see the same things he saw -- the Abyssinian warrior usually had to deal with very thick-skulled cats. Honeynose was different in that she was open-minded, and her heart seemed like a kind one.
"Yes, this stream connecting to the river that connects us all means something." He looked softly at Honeynose, studying her warm-tipped nose, her yellow-green eyes, her tabby sides as the sun illuminated them. It was truly impossible for the orange warrior to see her as an enemy. Why did one's location when they were born determine the types of relationships and connections they could make for the rest of their lives?
Emberlight looked to his territory, to Stoneclan's, and to the stream. "Whether that connection be a good or bad thing is up to the individual." He sighed, closing his eyes and breathing in the combination of scents surrounding him: Honeynose's dry scent, the stream's damp and mossy scent, and his own territory's familiar one. "I would like to think that the river is here to remind us that we are not so different after all."
After his soft-spoken reply to Honeynose, the older warrior purred reassuringly. The she-cat seemed a little nervous, as anyone would be when sitting so close to a cat of a different clan. I admire her courage. The orange warrior flicked his tail, letting it land lightly on Honeynose's. "Perception such as yours is rare. I feel blessed that my walk today led me to you."

Sparks exploded from the base of her tail and traveled all the way up her spine until they reached the ends of her whiskers. Blushing furiously, she felt the weight of Emberlight's tail and couldn't get her mind off of it; he meant it as a friendly gesture, surely. Solidarity and warmth. But Honeynose, whose thoughts as an apprentice and younger warrior had been filled with imagined romantic moments, her fur brushing against Vipertail's, their tails entwined as if nothing in the world would separate them...
It was a different cat beside her, and there was a different meaning behind the gesture, but Honeynose still had to remind herself to breathe. "I-I feel that way to-too," was her bashful stutter, with a growing purr following just seconds after. "Is this really alright, Emberlight? Us sitting here like Clanmates?" Common sense spoke up in the back of Honeynose's mind, promising a routine patrol along the borders would eventually arrive to find them like this.
They must have been a pretty picture, two cats peacefully sitting beside one another under the radiant light of a new day. That Emberlight was a tom and she a she-cat would no doubt create a bevy of rumors. "I don't want to cause you any trouble." Honeynose's ears bent back in soft concern. "Not everyone is as amicable and open-hearted as you are."
She could think of a few cats who would take issue with them sharing the border like this. Especially since the Stone Stream belonged to StoneClan; I should be chasing him away, Honeynose realized with a mournful inner sigh, but how can I when he's being so kind? Honeynose could picture Smokestorm's intense frown of disapproval, and tried not to physically wince. Was she being a bad Clanmate, by trying to be a good friend?
Oh my stars, why is this so complicated?

Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." This time, at Honeynose's words, Emberlight let out a rumbling laugh. Was it okay for them to be sitting like this? "Why is it that where you are born determines who you get to interact with?" At this, he let out a deep sigh. Emberlight found that he rather enjoyed Honeynose's open mind and her desire to learn. It inspired him, touching his heart in a way that not a lot of encounters did. This she-cat was special. "The greatest of wisdom comes when we draw it from different sources."
As Honeynose expressed her concerns about getting him in trouble, Emberlight purred gently and turned to look the she-cat in the eyes. In the rather remarkable eyes. "Stoneclan's border is the least of my clan's concerns right now. I'm probably the only cat who has touched this border since last sunrise."
Noticing her growing discomfort, Emberlight gently pressed against the friendly she-cat. "Don't worry about the future. This moment is a beautiful one. Even better to share with a beautiful soul."
Emberlight hated to look at the world through a lens of clan borders. He preferred to see all of the cats as the same, their only differences really being their culture and their hunting habits. Other than that, there was little variation between a Stoneclan cat such as Honeynose and a Rainclan cat such as Emberlight.
Not every cat thought that way. But maybe it was something that could be changed. Rainclan had once suffered a civil war between purist cats and "mixed" ones. But were those mixed cats really mixed? They turned out to be fine warriors of Rainclan once the war had subsided. There was no difference in the way they were built. They were all one.

Emberlight pressed against her, and something within Honeynose sighed - as if she'd just gotten out of the rain after a long, long time in the storm. He was warmth and reassurance in a way she was unaccustomed to, and already her heart was responding with an erratic beat, working itself up into her ears until it was all she could hear. "No one's ever called me beautiful before," murmured Honeynose, the pale fur on her muzzle showing hints of the flushed skin beneath.
'Don't worry about the future,' he said, as though he could visibly see the worries beginning to snowball behind her eyes - and had placed a paw in their path, stopping them. Honeynose's heart sang a few soft, girlish notes. He's so wise and thoughtful. So unlike any other cat she'd ever had the pleasure of meeting; how was it that she'd gone so many moons without speaking to him? I should've tried to be more social at Gatherings.
"I'm so glad I met you," Honeynose blurted, pelt prickling with self-consciousness, honesty driving her to voice her thoughts aloud. "I was... afraid of RainClan and LightningClan cats. I know that's silly, but we haven't healed from what happened between our Clans," she hated to turn the conversation sour, but the words wouldn't stop now that they'd started. "It's so good to be with another Clan cat who can see past those awful things, even extend friendship to complete strangers."
There was a tremendous amount of bravery in that. In choosing to focus on the present and the future, rather than let the past define one's every interaction. But when something so awful, so heartrendingly awful happens and the effects ripple over several generations, should they be so hasty to forget it? Honeynose didn't have any answers. That was for smarter, wiser cats.
All she had was her heart and her mind, and they were both inclined to live in the sunshine of the present, not the shadows of history.
"You remind me of Hawkstar, Emberlight." Honeynose smiled, warmth trapped in her heart like rain inside a cloud. "I know you don't know him, but he's... noble and compassionate. Everyone looks up to him. He's like everyone's father." When she pictured the regal scarred tom, benevolent and with a king's bearing, she felt safe, as if nothing earth shattering could happen without Hawkstar's say so.
"N-Not that I'm calling you old!" Honeynose's whiskers twitched with mortification and humor. "I didn't mean that!" Oops! Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." Emberlight looked Honeynose in the eye, surprised at what she had said. Was it really possible to go your whole life without being called beautiful? "I find it hard to believe that no one has ever called you beautiful. Sitting here under a sun almost as warm as your fur, you make me want to be around you."
A slight grimace crossed Emberlight's face at Honeynose's mention of the past conflict that had caused her to be apprehensive of Rainclan. The friendly tom hated everything about the history between Stoneclan, Lightningclan, and Rainclan. It was one of strife and misery.
However, that awful history taught many great lessons to each of those clans. Lessons on loyalty, respect, and peace. Rainclan for one was not a clan that would go rushing in senseless wars on a whim. Especially with Silverstar in place.
"It gives me great joy that serendipity worked out well for us today. Maybe our 'friendship' can help us to understand each other's clans to a better extent. We may just be the two cats who can enable complete healing between our two great clans." It was possible, for sure. Emberlight rather enjoyed the time he was spending with Honeynose on the border -- her presence filled something inside of him that he hadn't even realized had been empty.
A friendly huff escaped from Emberlight's lips as Honeynose next compared him to her own leader, Hawkstar. Emberlight did not know much about Stoneclan's leader other than his renowned wisdom and seeming immortality. He had been around for a while, older than Emberlight currently was when Emberlight himself was born. "I would hope that you don't see me as an old tom, but I am grateful that you can see some of the same good qualities in a cat from another clan as you can your own leader." However, not everything Honeynose said sat quite right with Emberlight. The ginger tom looked back towards the sun, a slight wistful air taking over. "The problem with being everyone's father is that you don't get to be someone's father."
Out of everything in the world that was possible to want, Emberlight wanted a family. Wanted a mate. Wanted kits to call his own. Yet his own fear of watching them suffer, watching them die, as he had with the rest of his family, severely inhibited him.
It looked like everyone had some healing of their own to do.

"Oh but that's not true at all!" The words left Honeynose's maw before she could rein them back in; her eyes were big and earnest as she struggled to follow his line of thinking. "Hawkstar has plenty of kits. Snowfeather and Minkfire and Herondive, his daughters, and his son Vipertail. I think he's adopted Eagletalon's two kits too - Kestrelclaw and Meadowflight." Aware that she was babbling a bit, or that some of these names would make no sense to him, Honeynose had to stop herself, take a deep breath, and refocus on what she was trying to say.
Emberlight had just sounded so wistful, as if he were stuck in leafbare, waiting for a spring that would never come... Honeynose's heart ached. "You can be both. Just like a cat can be a mentor and a mother, or a deputy and a father." She had never known anyone to give up one thing to focus solely on the other. Maybe things were different in RainClan.
Maybe things in Emberlight's world weren't as easy and harmonious as hers.
"I'm... I'm sure it gets hard, to focus on duties and on family at the same time, but that's okay isn't it?" Warm eyes searched his for confirmation, before she continued after a nervous flick of her tail. "I think I'd rather have a hard life surrounded by loved ones than an easy life all by myself." Something inside the she-cat wanted to shiver at the scenario she imagined for herself.
No Hazelcloud, no Herondive, no Sedgefoot, no Cloverspring. How colorless her world would be without those cats in it. Shyly, Honeynose looked at Emberlight from beneath her lashes, wondering if it was safe to include him in that short list of cats who... made her life better. "Is that what you want, Emberlight? To be a father?"
She didn't know why, but the question felt intimate, as if she were smoothing back his fur to take a look at the real Emberlight underneath. Honeynose averted her gaze to the water, feeling butterflies battling it out inside her stomach. "S-Sorry, I know that's a personal question - I-I just thought about what you said, and you said it with such longing..."
Honeynose shook her head. "I'm as nosy as my warrior name, I'm sorry!" Warrior || 45 Moons || StoneClan Honeynose Ginger || Made by Fawn || 380 Words

Emberlight "In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself." The hope that pervaded throughout Honeynose's words seeped into Emberlight's unknowingly heavy heart, lifting it more than he realized he had needed. There was a constant fear that weighed him down and turned him away from the possibility of having a family. A constant "what if" that held him back.
Emberlight had a great deal of love for his clan. But it wasn't familial. They were his clanmates. Some of the RainClanners he had gotten incredibly close with, making for excellent friends. Some even viewed the small warrior as a fatherly figure. But there was no one to call brother, sister, mother, or father.
Was he alone?
It was a question Emberlight had often found himself debating. He had so much love and life to give to the world, so many lessons and pieces of advice to impart upon those inquired. But was that all his legacy would be? Would he ever be able to pass down those lessons to one of his own?
By StarClan, he wanted to.
"To be a father...to have a family I could call my own." Even saying the words warmed Emberlight's face. "It would be a dream come true." Then, looking to the ever-shy yet sweet Honeynose, Emberlight sighed. "I am afraid, Honeynose."
It felt good, speaking with this beautiful she-cat for the first time and feeling such a connection to where he could tell her what resided in his heart. "I am afraid to lose everything again."
Not realizing what he was doing until he had already done it, Emberlight pressed his head to Honeynose's, an intimate gesture not often initiated between strangers. "Your heart is inspiring. I aspire to one day have the courage that you do when it comes to family and duty." He paused for a moment, taking in the scent of the StoneClan warrior. She smelled refreshing, like the breeze rushing over a field of Lillies on a warm green-leaf day.
"And what is it that you want?"

"To be a father...to have a family I could call my own." [...] "It would be a dream come true."
Something inside of Honeynose let out a little sob of joy and longing. Her heart wanted to weep at Emberlight's honest answer -- but the tom's sudden intimate press of his forehead against hers froze her insides in place. Honeynose gulped, pulse racing, her gaze locked with his. Every nerve ending felt like it was on fire, and she was so sure her face was burning that she had to keep her paws flat to the rock to keep from dunking her face in the stone stream.
"I-I-I want... I want..." Honeynose's heart raged against her breast, trapped and trying to get out. Oh Stars, no one had ever asked her that. Not in the way that Emberlight was. It was not some silly little question that she could blurt out an answer to, or ramble on as she worked her way to some sort of response. This was the kind of question that peeked into the soul, and Honeynose felt a tingle of fear ripple down her spine like a leafbare chill.
If he knew how badly she wanted what she wanted, would he look at her strangely? Would he reel back, realize she was a desperate, pathetic mess and keep a healthy distance between them? He was so close...
Finally, finally, Honeynose whispered. "I want a family too. Oh Stars, to have a mate and a family of my own would be--" she hiccupped, voice breaking. "--I have to go!" The tabby and white she-cat skittered back, her hind paws losing traction and dunking her legs and tail partially into the water. The stream lapping at her belly was enough to snap was some sense back into her. Honeynose whipped around, hurrying back to StoneClan -- to safety -- the words coming out of her in a frantic string. "I'm so glad I met you butIreallyneedtogohome."
Honeynose dared to look back, her heart thumping an erratic beat along her bloodstream. She could feel it in her ears and in between her pawpads. "Goodbye," she mewed, "I-I'll see you later. At the Gathering maybe. G-Goodbye."
It was as undignified a finish as their meeting's initiation. Even now, Honeynose had to force the memory of his warmth and his kindness and his beautiful way of speaking out of her head. She wanted nothing more than to curl up on that rock, basking in the light of the sun and that rare, precious feeling he gave her. It was a feeling Vipertail never had.
The sense that her company was wanted. Cherished, even.
You're being an absolute fluff-brained fool, Honeynose, she chided herself as she trotted through StoneClan's territory. The dry dusty earth seemed to stretch on for miles. He's going to think you're desperate or unreliable or just strange! Why did you have to react like that? Oh stars stars stars STARS why had she made such a fool of herself? Worse still, than all these things, was that single treacherous thought inside her head.
That maybe, just maybe, in a different life, if they'd been born in the same Clan at the right time... that maybe Emberlight would have been the key to everything she'd ever wanted.
