Night had cooled off some of the scorching heat of the day, though despite the lack of the sun the humidity was still awful. The sky would soon break and bring rain with it, but it seemed like it was ages away with the way the ground was cracking and the trees were brittling.

Slipping out of the Warrior's den, the young she-cat gave a quick and enjoyable stretch of her long, lanky body before giving each limb a good shake. With her feathered tail curled over her back the gray warrioress glanced around within the dim cavern of Nightclan's camp.

Mischief was a permanate glitter within those green pools, the resident troublemaker looking for something rather exciting to do. Gracklestrike and Nettleheart's scents were faint, so they were probably already somewhere out within Nightclan's pine forests, but as she was looking around the excitable she-cat caught sight of her aunt slipping out of camp.

With a purr of excitement and a quick trot, Graywolf followed her black coated kin out into the waiting territory, the slightest hint of a moon drifting in and out of clouds once she slipped out into the waiting night air.

"Hollystorm!" Graywolf called out in her silky, sweet tone, the purr even louder within her throat as she scampered over like a kit. Green pools glittered happily and feathered tail waved lazily over her back, paws quiet as she drew up to the older warrior's flank.

"Mind if I tag along? We haven't done anything together in a while." Graywolf loved to be around her family, though she tended to get on Bonetail's nerves with her constant antics and jokes. Despite not showing it, underneath her fierce and tough exterior, she still missed her grandfather. 

Blackwolf's death was still a sharp pain and she could only imagine how Hollystorm was dealing, now with the loss of both parents. Graywolf couldn't even imagine it, and with the thought she gave a comforting press into her aunt's side before moving to trot off into the shadows of their territory.

Flickering Hollystorm affectionatly on her nose with her tail, Graywolf gave an amused laugh, "Come on slow poke!"

The encroaching night beckoned, and Hollystorm answered. Green eyes sharp, pelt sleek and well-kept; she gave the appearance of a warrioress who knew what she was about. What she stood for. What she represented.

...but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Instead of her suffix indicating prowess in battle and an unmatched emotional strength, her suffix seemed to more aptly describe the mess going on inside of her. A confusing storm howled and raged inside Hollystorm's breast, beating her over the head with the same old questions. What do I stand for? What is my place here? I am not Blackwolf, I am not Ghostlight - so who am I?

Somewhere along the path to adulthood, that fire, that attitude that had once come so natural to her, had vanished. Snuffed out, leaving only cold, ashen remains that no one knew what to do with. Hollystorm walked out of camp with her head held high, a touch of haughtiness and a definite wall up between Blackwolf's daughter and the rest of her Clanmates. There were a pawful of cats who could pierce it and reach her, but those cats were few. So few.

"Hollystorm!"

Once such cat arrived with an arched tail and a mischievous glint in her eyes. Hollystorm forced a purr, a faint light of amusement in her eyes as the young troublemaker took off ahead, cat-calling; "come on slow poke!"

"Slow poke?" Hollystorm quickened her pace, lengthening into a panther's stride to catch up to her exuberant niece. "Cute." The older warrioress overtook Graywolf, breathing in warm night air with every inhale, letting the exhales rise to the stars beginning to wink into existance overhead. The night instantly felt alive and loud with the chorus of frogs near the ambush pond. Hollystorm flicked an ear, snorting. "Let's cull a few frogs, I can't even hear myself think with this racket."

Truthfully, all it would take was one wrong pawstep on a dry twig to send the frogs into a tense, fearful silence - but that wasn't nearly as fun as actually catching one.

The nighttime air felt good against the gray feline's feathered coat, plume tail curled over her back as she stood there for a moment. Though her ears rotated atop her head all she could hear was the constant croaking of frogs and singing of crickets as the moon passed to and fro behind clouds ahead. 

Tilting her head, the younger she-cat turned her attention to the black she-cat next to her, the older warrioress suggesting hunting some of the critters to help pass the time. While it wasn't what she had planned on doing with her aunt, the petite feline guessed it wouldn't be too bad an idea. 

Not to mention her stomach growled ever so slightly.

Flickering her shredded ear, a battle memento from one of her fights along the Treeclan border, Graywolf gave a faint signal of agreement while pushing her own personal intentions aside. For the moment. There was no doubt within her mind that she'd weasel her prying questions later on.

"Bet I can catch more than you." Graywolf challenged with a familiar smirk upon her face. Mischief was swirling within green pools as the residential trouble make waved her tail back and forth happily.

It was funny, how similarly she resembled the grandmother she never knew.

Parting from the older warrioress, the dilute she-cat slipped into the shadows of the looming pine trees while crouching low to the ground. Emerald pools darted back and forth in an attempt to land of the brown or green form of either a frog or a toad. Whichever had the luck of finding themselves within her sharp claws. 

A loud croak sounded to her left, drawing Graywolf's attention as she slowly twitched an ear in that direction before her head followed in a matching manner. A smirk made it's way to her gray maw as the warrioress slunk forwards, near silent on the ground.

Once she was in a close enough range the gray pelted feline leaped forwards, landing with a successful crack and squish as the reptile died beneath her weight. Though upon her movement multiple frogs leaped away from her, sending Graywolf into another leap in attempt to snag more. 

With a lucky swipe, claws sliced through a fleeing target and sent it thudding to the ground. Her other paw managed to daze one more in which she killed with a quick bite before it had time to regain it's senses and hop away for dear life. 

The sounds around them had quieted as the prey suddenly realized it was being hunted. Their scent was strong and muddled, almost impossible to try and track one while millions huddled about within the shadows and the mud. Yet to see another sign of frantic movement for her to hunt down. 

Snagging each of her catches by a leg, the prideful feline trotted happily back to where she had first left Hollystorm. With her feathered tail curled over her back, Graywolf dropped her frogs with a pleased expression, "Three so far, how did you fair?"

"Bet I can catch more than you."

Hollystorm purred in response, a lash of her tail an answer to Graywolf's challenge as her niece hared away. Graywolf reminded her so much of Ghostlight... She's a better successor to you than I am, Mom. It hurt, how true that statement was. Somewhere in the process of Hollystorm's warriorhood, she had lost that sense of mischief, that keen independence inherent in any daughter with Blackwolf in her lineage.

...Why?

Giving Graywolf a wide berth to hunt uninterrupted, Hollystorm let that single question sit in her thoughts, the black she-cat giving in to basic predatory instincts as she scented - and heard - a nearby frog. It made a messy escape, having strayed too far from a body of water, and Hollystorm pounced upon and killed it with ease. The question was still there, even after a second frog.

It was on the third that the answer presented itself in the whispered hush of ferns on fur as a patrol of cats streamed by a few foxlengths ahead. Hollystorm instinctively stilled, green eyes locked tight to the masculine ginger form that flitted between the fronds. How could she mistake them for anyone else? It was Sunpulse, the tom who had once caused her so much joy and satisfaction - only to have been left an icy shell of her youthful self.

Hollystorm's claws protruded into the wet earth, the time for blaming him had long passed. The she-cat thought she caught a hint of Sunpulse's smile as he traveled through, and some of the ice in her heart thawed. Thinking back to the last few hunting sessions with him, she recalled with a faint note of pleasure that they were breaking through the awkwardness at last.

"Three so far, how did you fair?"

"Two," Hollystorm exhaled, pushing Sunpulse's lingering scent off her palatte so she could concentrate. "But it's still early." The black she-cat stretched, pelt rippling like silk in the moonlight. "How about we turn this into a proper competition?" Raise the stakes a little.

The old Hollystorm wouldn't have allowed something so routine stay so routine.
