Hope when you take that jump Dun dun… Dunn dunnn… Dunnnn dunnnn...
It was a silly little tune he hummed in his head as he paddled stealthily to the little woven nest lolling gently in the camp stream. Little kitten claws were gripping excitedly, squeals of joy music to the new father’s ears as they sensed the ‘danger’ approaching. Russethawk had to remind himself not to smile underwater - quickest way to ruin the hold-your-breath technique he had perfected for just such an occasion.
”I see it! There’s the pike!” Sablekit yowled, the reed nest wobbling but holding steady despite four kits all scampering and pawing all over it. Russethawk, with just his eyes, ears and an island of ruddy back fur showing above the water, slunk nice and close, belly brushing the stream bottom. He lifted his muzzle above the surface, spraying his hapless prey with a mouthful of water. ”Mmmmm, I smell dinner. Four tasty little minnows!”
Russethawk threw back his head and laughed like a villain from one of the elders' stories. "Muwahahaha!" Sablekit nearly toppled into the water trying to swipe at him. ”We’re not dinner, YOU’RE dinner! I’ll bop you so hard your fins’ll fall off!” Sablekit chirped, puffing his chest out and trying to keep his balance on the nest’s edge.
Russethawk grinned, and made to ‘bite’ Sablekit’s paws. ”You’re the first one I’ll eat!”
Rosekit squealed, teal-blue eyes as wide as bumblebees, her fur fluffed out as she tried to keep Sablekit on the nest, his tail clamped between her teeth. ”We haftoo sahv Sahblekiht!”
Sablekit, to his credit, writhed and hissed and made clumsy swipes at Russethawk’s face, while the ‘pike’ dodged and chortled, whiskers heavy with fat droplets of stream water.
”Splash him,” called Ashflight from dry land, and Russethawk could detect the mirth in her voice. ”That’ll scare off that nasty pike.”
Sablekit shook out his wet pelt, grinning. ”Did you hear that? Mom wants us to throw Splash at him!” The runt of the litter yanked his tail out of Rosekit's grasp and turned upon his brother, a mischievous expression clear as the camp’s stream. Side by side with his brothers and sister, Sunkit had watched Russethawk approach, the top half of his head and his back sliding through the water as he slipped closer; the young tom's tail stuck straight up, bushed in excitement, as Sablekit yowled threats. He spared a moment to roll his eyes at his excitable smaller brother and then darted forward. The nest wobbled underneath his paws and he fell, one front leg and his nose dipping under the surface. He breathed in, choked, and reared back, snorting water out of his nose before facing off with his father, trying to look brave past his streaming nose and eyes.
"No!" he screeched, and staggered to stand next to Sablekit and Rosekit. "Pikes don't eat cats and we're not minnows, we're too big! Maybe we'll eat you!"
"Splash him," Ashflight called from the bank, and Sunkit's eyes lit up as he did just that, bringing both front paws down in an attempt to send a rush of water into Russethawk's face. "Mother!" he screeched, letting Sablekit and Rosekit deal with trying to toss Splashkit into the water. "Mother, help us!"

Sablekit was always so loud. Splashkit’s ears flicked back as his brother yowled, watching their father creep closer through the water with wide eyes. “Hey, watch it!” he cried as their reed nest pitched forward, Sablekit leaning over one edge, fur all fluffed up and ready for a fight. Russethawk’s muzzle broke the surface, spraying them all with water, and Splashkit’s patched fur also fluffed up then, indignant. He began to step forward, to stand with Sablekit against this water dwelling menace, but when the reed nest dipped further, he stopped. It didn’t take long for him to realize if they all piled onto one side, it would topple them all into the water, where they’d be easy prey for the ‘pike’.
So he edged back to the other side to keep them balanced, since none of his siblings seemed concerned about the task. Sablekit threatened and Russethawk took him as a volunteer for the pike’s first snack, the smallest of the litter swiping at the older tom’s face while their sister held him back from falling into the stream, or being pulled in. Sunkit took up their mother’s suggestion to splash him, as apparently that was a good defense against a lurking pike, but Sablekit took their mother’s suggestion a different way.
Ashflight purred from her spot on the sand, lounging as Russethawk entertained their kits for the time being. Four rambunctious kits were trying on a cat that was not known for her vast reserves of patience. She loved each of them deeply, of course, but she appreciated the occasional break from having to keep them all in line. Sunkit called for her help and she laughed, “Surely you four can take one birdbrained pike?”
“Hey!” Splashkit’s ears flattened as Sablekit and Rosekit both converged on him, tugging and pushing, “Stop it! We have to-” Another shove, “Wait! If we’re all on one side it will-”
The nest went near vertical as his brother and sister gave him a final push toward the edge, sending him splashing into the water, and Sablekit with him, though Rosekit squealed as she managed to cling onto the edge. The momentum tossed Splashkit against his father and he clung to the tom’s shoulder, pulling his head up above the water with a gasp, hissing angrily, “Fishbrains!” Was he the only one that ever thought about anything before he did something? But, he supposed, since the opportunity had presented itself.... "Got you, big ugly fishbrain!" Splashkit squealed from his place clinging to Russethawk's shoulder, clambering onto his father's back and grabbing his ear with his teeth for good measure. Fawn Taxx

Hope when you take that jump "Mommmmm! Splashkit called us Fishbrains! Tell him that's not allowed!" The ginger and white kit stamped her paw, sticking her tongue out at Splashkit as if his insults were worse than she and Sablekit tossing him into the water.
Russethawk, meanwhile, gurgled a watery laugh - half yelp, half chuckle - as Sunkit's paws smacked him right on the muzzle. The ruddy tom snorted like a seal, and made a big show of thrashing around in the water as if they really were defeating him."Ahhhhgh!! No one told me these minnows bite back!" Yeouch, he's got some needle teeth! Splashkit was attacking his ear with vigor, and Russethawk vainly hoped he wasn't trying to draw blood; it was all fun and games until someone got a permanent scar, that was what he'd learned.
Suddenly he felt the latching of miniature claws trying to find a grip on the base of his spine. Sablekit had joined the fray too, and was alternating between growling ferociously and trying to nip him anywhere he could.
With a dramatic wail to Ashflight, Russethawk pulled a mock look of horror. "Help! Help! I've got water-ticks on me!'
The ruddy tom suddenly ducked under the water and gave his head a hefty shake, hoping the bouyancy of the camp stream against Splashkit's body would dislodge his son from his ear.
Rosekit puffed up in alarm. "Water-ticks? are that real?" The agitated state of her fur was significantly decreased - by the massive surge of water churned up by Russethawk's paws, her father having turned to kick out with his back feet and send spraying scoops of water right down on the two raft-bound kits. Rosekit squealed, tiny claws sinking into the reed nest as it pitched to and fro from the momentum. You don't fear the fall RainClan || 75 Moons || Tom Russethawk @zen Taxx || 294 Words || Notes

Focused as he was on Ashflight, Sunkit didn't notice Sablekit and Rosekit's efforts until the nest began to tip, and his little claws sprang out to hook into the reeds as he turned to look over his shoulder. "Wait!" he squealed, as the she-kit and tom gave Splashkit a last shove and the nest tipped; his hindpaws slipped, but he managed to hold on with his front claws as the nest dropped level again, and he cast a glance over to see that he and Rosekit were the only two left on the raft. Carefully he padded to join his sister, watching his brothers take on Russethawk with gleaming eyes.
If he sprang hard enough, he ought to be able to land right on his father's back. Would three kits be too much for him? One ear flicked and he glanced over at Rosekit, offering a flick of his tail at her. "Of course not," he replied, his tone lofty. "Dad's just teasing. Come on, Rosekit, let's get him!"
Squinting through the waves of water kicked up by the warrior's splashing, Sunkit took a breath, squeezed his eyes shut and sprang. And missed. He belly-flopped into the river, a faint squeak the only sound of surprise before his head went under, but he was back up a moment later, blowing water out his nose and paddling toward Russethawk. He slapped a paw over his father's back, kicking his way up between Sablekit and Splashkit, laughing as he wobbled with Russethawk's thrashing. "We're not minnows! We're pikes too!"

Sablekit viciously attacked his father's backside, tiny claws scrambling to grab onto Russethawk's legs. As soon as he had a somewhat decent grip, the wild-eyed kit felt his claws dislodge as Sunkit pounced on Russethawk. With a surprised hiss, Sablekit fell off of his father's back and into the water.
The tiny kit struggled to swim up, but he was soon confronted by his father's tail brushing the bottom of the stream. With a big push of his paws, he swam to Russethawk's tail and latched on. From there, he opened his mouth to bite it, only finding that his mouth became filled with water. Startled, Sablekit climbed up his father's tail until he was once again perched on top of Russethawk's back above the surface.
Letting out a loud and scraggly squeal, Sablekit wrapped his paws around Russethawk's tail. "You're not getting away from Sablestar, the strong leader of Pikeclan!" Of course, everyone was just now hearing of his self-anointed leadership in his newly-created clan, but Sablekit had no doubt his loyal followers would accept him as their ruler.

Little paws stayed rooted in place as all three of her brothers had latched their way onto their ruddy coated father. Despite the fact that she had been splashed earlier, the only she-cat of the litter had tried her hardest to keep her silky golden and white fur as dry as possible.
Unlike most Rainclanners, the little kit was not a fan of the water. Or rather, she didn't mind it as long as it wasn't drenching her, soaking her or anything else where she would get wet. How she got dragged onto this floating nest in the middle of the stream was still a mystery to her.
Maybe because she really wanted to play.
Tiny, sharp claws still clung almost desperately to the nest she was still atop, it moved too and fro with Russethawk's dramatic splashing and flailing about. Teal orbs were moving back and forth between Sunkit, Splashkit and Sablekit as they wriggled about on their father, each one of them just as wet as he was now.
Rosekit's ears leaned back against her head as she lashed her tail slightly, annoyed at the fact that they had all left her by herself. Taking a few steps forwards the tiny feline paused as she found she couldn't keep much balance by herself, nor with the stream rippling from the movement within it's watery surface.
Feeling defeated and lonely, the ginger and white she-kit folded her haunches and plopped down. "Dad-dy!" Rosekit squealed, even going so far as to throw her head back dramaticly, faux tears breaking the teal coloration of her gaze as she tried very hard to get his attention.
"I want to get on your back too..." Her voice was a little smaller than normal, and her eyes glanced at the water surrounding her little island to show she wasn't too excited about having to swim to him.
