Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains Pale amber eyes watched the entrance to the badger burrow intently. An entire family, comprised of a mother and her three cubs, had taken up residence in the Sun Stones over recent days. The animal was a danger to both Clans, and as such, he and Firestar had agreed to mount a joint effort to chase the creatures away. At his side stood two StoneClanners, as well as a LIghtningClan warrior and apprentice. He was uncertain how Harestrike and Sparkpaw would perform, but decided he needed to trust Firestar's selection in attendees, just as she needed to trust his.
Movement caught his attention, and he raised his tail in a signal to get ready, but hold position. A broad snout pushed out into the open, the large female lumbering forth from the safety of her den. She turned her nose to the sky, scenting the air, but the Clan cats had chosen their waiting areas carefully. She would not suspect a thing. As she pushed forward, set on gathering food for her cubs, Hawkstar's tail snapped to the side, and his group darted out from their cover and charged directly toward the badger.
The beast chuffed in alarm, but Bearclaw and Harestrike had cut behind her, blocking the escape route back to her cubs. As the remaining members surrounded her, the StoneClan figurehead raised his silvered muzzle to the sky and yowled, signalling to Firestar leading the cub group that they could proceed into the burrow. Focusing back on the badger, Hawkstar watched as the she swung her muzzle between her attackers and bellowed in frustration. Sinking into a defensive crouch, the broad shouldered tom snapped his paw forward and slammed it against her muzzle. His intent was to serve as a distraction, ensuring the others were in the least amount of danger possible.
With a howl, the mother bared and snapped her teeth aggressively, lashing out at the aging tom. He just managed to leap clear of her retaliation blow, massive paw slamming into the ground mere tail lengths from him. Hissing at her and baring his own teeth, he had little time to check on the progress of the others. Someone must have struck her from behind, for the badger let out a pained sound, beginning to swing her lumbering head to deal with the pest. Taking the opportunity to strike again, Hawkstar's paw swung up from beneath, colliding with her chin and forcing her snout up into the air as she howled with pain once more.

GOING FOR THE TITLE Sparkpaw GOT HIT BY A TIDAL WAVE LIGHTNINGCLAN - APPRENTICE - 18 MOONS StoneClan?
Sparkpaw's mouth almost gaped when he had heard the news, though he was quite sure that it wasn't appropriate to sulk about the opportunity he was given. Just when life seemed to balance out to a boring, morose, and routine haze, the badgers appeared, and joint teams of LightningClan and StoneClan cats mixed together was a desperate, pathetic attempt at easing tensions and eliminating a shared conflict.
Or so the ignorant Sparkpaw had thought.
Firestar is getting soft. He thought snidely. We could have taken care of this problem ourselves, or let StoneClan get ripped to pieces by themselves. The ginger and white tom glanced at Bearclaw, Smokestorm, and Hawkstar with a cautious and unpredictable glint flickering in the depths of his golden eyes. StoneClan's leader, deputy, and one of their strongest warriors at risk? Sparkpaw's mind raced. Pictures of their deaths made his heart skip, though the young tom was unsure whether it was joy in the prospect of vanquishing his enemies, or fear of the absence of a true rival.
Having to decide made his head spin angrily and his chest tighten, though deep down he knew what he wanted. He wanted to see StoneClan fall into disarray. He wanted to watch them squirm in discomfort and fear without a single leader, deputy, medicine cat, or ancestor to look up to. He wanted them to wallow in the shadows, in hopeless calamity. He wanted them to feel cut off from reality. He wanted them to feel like a cancer killing the valley.
All the humiliation StoneClan had caused him made Sparkpaw's hackles rise intensely, hate tightening his jaw shut. For once in a long time, Sparkpaw was eerily quiet.
A shadow creased the senior apprentice's face as the group crouched in hiding, waiting breathlessly for the appearance of the mother badger.
Sparkpaw cringed at the thought of taking orders from StoneClanners, though a flash of black and white fur centered his focus. Arrogance quelled fear. Sparkpaw anticipated Hawkstar's signal, darting out slightly early, the rest of the warriors behind him, even if only by a whisker. The badger was his opponent, and feeling fire rush through his body limb to limb made the tom's confidence reel out of control.
It's time to show them what LightningClan is really made of. Sparkpaw thought, golden eyes drunk on glory as he crashed into the fray.

HARESTRIKE LightningClan, 49 Moons, Senior Warrior Washing my hands but the water is wasted, I tried a darker side and I liked how it tasted. What was Firestar thinking, sending a little runt like Sparkpaw along on this mission? Harestrike tolerated the echoes of his own adolescent thirst to prove himself, remembering the rivalry he'd once had with Thrushwhisker, with Blazefang and even with Sunblaze, his former mentor. But time had been harsh upon his adversaries; Thrushwhisker and Sunblaze died, and Blazefang had been crippled, turned into a crochety shadow of his former self.
That had not quelled Harestrike's inner fire. He'd turned his challenging gaze to another group of cats; Nightstep in particular was a fearsome warrior, and Harestrike sneered internally, wishing the sire was replacing the young, wild-eyed kit representing LightningClan.
"Don't make our Clan look soft, Sparky." said Harestrike after pulling the young cat aside, the glint in his grass-green eyes as much a warning as it was a challenge. "And try not to get yourself killed, either. I like taking orders from them as much as the next cat, but if it'll keep me alive, I can put up with it."
With a rough brush of his tail across Sparkpaw's ears, Harestrike was quick to join the rest of the group, lapsing into a preparatory silence as they awaited the mother badger's appearance.
The balance of strength was clearly in StoneClan's favor; by sending one warrior and one apprentice to represent LightningClan, Firestar obviously expected the final blow to go to StoneClan. Harestrike smothered his irritation, knowing he couldn't let that cloud his judgment. Dovecloud wouldn't forgive him if he died doing something foolish; not when they'd been just talking about having kits...
But Firestar's lack of faith in him rankled Harestrike. His mother's voice came needling in at times like these. If you were stronger, Firestar would think better of you. She'd think well enough of him to give him a better battle partner than an apprentice.
Harestrike's eyes flashed, latching onto the signal from StoneClan's ancient patriarch. In a display of breathtakingly foolish heroism, Hawkstar seemed to be challenging the mother badger all by himself. Harestrike shared a look with Bearclaw - a dark, well-built tom around his own age - and the two surged ahead, cutting her off from a hasty retreat into the den.
Harestrike's pulse was racing, and even amidst the thrill of excitement - the rush of blood, the war-drums in his head - he was aware of how stupidly they were positioned. The cats that got between a mother badger and her cubs were the ones most likely to get their faces torn off.
Claws flexing, muscles rippling, Harestrike saw an opening and took it. He struck a glancing blow against the she-badger's left haunch, skirting one kicking back foot to sink his teeth into the coarse-haired hide. It was a shallow bite - meant only to harry and distract, for now.
I'll make sure LightningClan gets the final blow. Smokestorm looked like one good wind would bowl her over, which left only Bearclaw and Hawkstar to get ahead of. Hawkstar was older than the stones their Clans fought over. Bearclaw didn't seem like the glory-seeking type.
That just leaves Nightstep's little brat... As long as Sparkpaw didn't get in the way, Harestrike knew this wouldn't be the last time he tasted badger blood. Will you hold my hand when you know I'm a sinner? Tags || 535 Words || Notes JusticeTaxx@jet BlooRey DVDOOC: How many rounds are we doing?

Smokestorm This gal right here's gonna rule the world No, I won't sit still and look pretty If it wasn't one thing, it was another, Smokestorm griped under her breath as she padded alongside Hawkstar, with a group of StoneClan warriors and Palepaw following. Badgers, a mother with three cubs, and their sett right on the border between LightningClan and StoneClan. Personally, Smokestorm would have been happy to tell her cats to avoid the border and let the other Clan have them, but Hawkstar either didn't feel the same, or felt the danger to their Clan was too great. Either way, here they were; the dilute calico deputy paused and stared at the rival Clan cats, fighting to keep her distaste of them hidden.
She was even less pleased when Palepaw was sent with a group of three LightningClan warriors, and her fur prickled at the thought of what the three might do to her niece. Palepaw had been thrilled to be chosen, and Smokestorm had promised Mistcloud she'd keep the younger she-cat safe, but how could she do that when they weren't even on the same group? If anything happened to Palepaw... the ginger-and-white apprentice had brushed against Smokestorm, purring, and promised she'd be fine as she headed off to join the chasers, but Smokestorm was hardly comforted.
Still, she had her own threat to take care of, and here at least StoneClan outnumbered LightningClan. She, Bearclaw and Hawkstar, along with Harestrike and Sparkpaw. A decently sized group, considering their target, and Smokestorm waited, tail switching from side to side as she stood next to Hawkstar; his signal to charge came and she hurled herself forward with the rest of her group, circling wide as the StoneClan leader too the task of distracting the mother from the other four. She worried about him, too, but Hawkstar had fought badgers before, and despite his age he was strong. Nor would he appreciate her trying to protect him like he was a defenseless kit.
Harestrike was going for the creature's left hind leg, and Smokestorm veered for the right. It was the safest place, really, so long as she kept clear of the teeth. Smokestorm raked her claws through the badger's fur, feeling them catch on skin and tear as the badger roared in pained protest. Deputy of StoneClan

His focus was on his leader. The others could take care of themselves, and if Firestar was stupid enough to send an apprentice into a dangerous battle then it was on her head, not theirs, if the little tom was smart, he'd not take any risks. The badger was huge, even compared to the adult cats involved in this fight. When the signal was given he didn't hesitate to circle around and actually bite the badger in the backside, sinking his claws into the beast and holding on while it charged forward.
The intention was to bleed it in the very least, as he'd need all his strength if someone had to be removed from the battle. He eventually released his hold and sprang back as the mother made a swipe at him, bounding back to stand near Hawkstar again. "She's a feisty one, this badger." He deadpanned it, fur stood up on end to try and intimidate the beast as he awaited his orders. he'd take another swipe at it, leaping and clawing whenever she came too close to he or Hawkstar. Something bad was going to happen, there was no denying it. No way were they all getting out of this without some injury.

Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains A snort answered Bearclaw's deadpan, pale amber eyes still focused on the badger as the broad-shouldered pair took turns taunting the beast. From his peripherals, he could see the shapes of the other members darting in and out, clawing and biting to whittle down the beast's resolve. Hackles raised along his back, a sound starting in the depths of his chest as he prepared another taunt. A lash of his tail preceded the snarling hiss, which locked the badger's attention onto him once more. Exactly as planned. He thought to himself, sidestepping away from Bearclaw to avoid a slamming paw.
As far as fights against massive beasts who also happened to be mothers went, this was going well. ...Which only served to put Hawkstar on edge. He'd lived through many moons, and seen many things. Rarely were fights like this as clean as they seemed. Perhaps it was for this reason he was watching the badger so closely. It started with a stamp of a foot, annoyance as smaller claws ripped at her side. Next, it was the flick of an ear, toward a ginger-coated apprentice with burning desire in his eyes. And then it was the slant of her shoulders as the beast's head swung toward her next target.
Hawkstar didn't need to think about the tradeoff he made then. With a pawful of extra lives to spare, he launched forward to shove himself between the badger's snapping jaws and LightningClan's Sparkpaw. With a hiss of pain, he felt teeth sink into his shoulders and neck, pinpricks of fire ripping over his skin. Soon, his paws slid uselessly against the ground, claws trying to find traction as the badger hauled him in the other direction. He was a big cat, but the desperation and anger fuelling the black and white demon gave her strength alongside her size, enough to throw him side to side like a piece of prey.
She tossed her head up then and for a moment he was weightless, until teeth crashed back down as she readjusted her grip. The pressure was immense, jaws intent on crushing him as she continued to grunt and snort at her other attackers. With the onslaught continuing, the great beast grew tired of the weight in her maw, and after on final tightening, causing the sand brown tom to cough and sputter, she flung him violently to the side and sent him sprawling against the rocks they fought on.
He recalled the initial slam, the impact rattling his frame as flesh and bone connected with unforgiving stone. It chased what little breath remained from his lungs, and set the world spinning. Or perhaps that was simply him as he rolled over relatively flat terrain. He had little time to consider it, for a boulder violently halted his path. He remained suspended in a strange place of dull ache and muffled noises, but he could feel the darkness settling over her. The cold crept forward, and before long, he surrendered to the quiet amongst the storm. leader of stoneclan and may you have the courage to scale their summits background image | harley king | @tags

GOING FOR THE TITLE Sparkpaw GOT HIT BY A TIDAL WAVE LIGHTNINGCLAN - APPRENTICE - 18 MOONS For StoneClanners, they aren't that bad. Sparkpaw thought, scratching and gnawing where he could, though caution did seem to sharpen his wits after a few close calls. There! Sparkpaw saw a chance and leaped forward, latching onto one of the badger's hindquarters and digging his claws deep. Pride flashed through his veins like lightning, and a growl resonated from the back of his throat like thunder. It was this moment that he fulfilled his name, sinking his jaws into the badger's haunches: a small flame alight on the creature's back.
Though that fire was rapidly quenched. Sparkpaw felt teeth snag at his shoulder and rip him from his podium atop the oversized skunk, sending the ginger and white tom hitting the hard ground with a thud. One of the badger's massive paws smacked his chest and crushed him into the ground as she turned. Fury sparked in the badger's gaze, though a heavy onslaught from the others distracted her from the winded apprentice for a moment.
Sparkpaw's head spun angrily and his breaths were ragged, though it didn't keep him from bouncing clumsily back to his paws, just in time to see snapping jaws, to feel hot, rancid breath, and to hear a guttural growl from the back of the badger's throat. Time seemed to freeze, and when Sparkpaw's life flashed before his eyes, in the quick seconds he thought to be his last, he raised his feeble, front paws boldly, leaning forward and bracing himself as fate bore down on him.
Life had never seemed so black and white.
When he thought all was lost, a flash of brown crashed between him and a bloody, dizzying death. Sparkpaw's front paws hit the ground as Hawkstar's lifted off. The old tom's body snapped back and forth limply in the badger's jaws. Wrath lent Sparkpaw strength to steady mind and paw. Without question, the apprentice lurched forward and tore viciously at the badgers neck while her jaws were full of StoneClan's leader.
That could have been me. Sparkpaw's conscience whispered in his ears as he ripped and tore at whatever he could. That would have been me.
One swift swing of her jaws sent Hawkstar's body flying into the side of the hollow with a heavy thump, and Sparkpaw retreated hastily towards StoneClan's leader, shoulder searing like a touch of fire, and chest burning like a lung-full of hot smoke as the ginger and white tom limped.
The youth stumbled to Hawkstar's side, watching as StoneClan's icon bled out. The brown tom's eyes grew lifeless: he twitched, gurgled, and eventually sighed, letting go of this life, all within moments. Sparkpaw whipped around and braced himself, standing between Hawkstar and the badger, watching dizzily as the battle continued.
He couldn't fail to protect the tom who gave him a life. He wouldn't.
