Adderpaw

"I see things no one else sees."

Adderpaw padded after Amberwing, with Hemlockpaw at her side. Battle training, the warrior had told them, and they’d be doing this together. She had shrugged and followed; it didn’t really matter to her whether Amberwing headed the session, or if Zephyrfang and Silentsong did. They were all warriors in name- only their tactics in battle changed. Adderpaw had spent little time with Hemlockpaw’s mentor before, but she knew Mockingbird had mentored her, so there was some connection to the family.

Hemlockpaw still looked locked in his misery, and Adderpaw didn’t know what to do- or say- to drag him out of it. She could say it wasn’t his fault all she wanted, but it did no good if he felt it was, and even she couldn’t deny that he’d played a part in it- after all, it had been his curiosity Magpiewing had encouraged, and he had been the one to carry the mouse- meant for Gorsetail, until Ravenstorm had snatched it from him. But she could offer her presence and remind him that he wasn't alone.

Gently, Adderpaw reached over to rub her cheek against her brother’s shoulder; Amberwing paused then, the three having reached their destination of the Thicket, and the tortoiseshell apprentice lifted her head to the gray she-cat, waiting for her first instruction.

Amberwing was watching the two apprentices as she led them along. It had been a suggestion from her mother to try training them together to see if it would bring Hemlockpaw out of his depression and back to the task at hand. He'd never become a warrior at this rate, and she was sorely disappointed that he had let himself fall so deeply into it that he couldn't get out. Pathetic really, and she'd had such high hopes for the offspring of her mentor. But she kept it to herself and gave him the benefit of the doubt. He was still young, still not desensitized and introduced to the harsh realities of the world. He'd grow out of it. She had. And better still, it gave her the chance to see what damage had been done to the young she-cat that was her own apprentice's sister.

"Alright you two, pay attention." She told them firmly, waiting until she had two pairs of eyes on her before continuing. "I'm breaking this training into parts. First off, keep in mind that in a fight its your life or theirs. Unlike when we hunt if another cat attacks you they are likely as strong or stronger than you are. So you have to be smarter, faster, better is some way. They don't care who you are or how old or not you are. To them you are the enemy and they will show you no mercy. Keep that in mind anytime you encounter someone that's not from this clan." She flicked her tail, shifting her paws and finally turning so that the two could see her from the side. "Just like in hunting, a good warrior knows how to use their environment to their advantage. So," She paused here and looked around before nodding to herself. "I want you two to go and find a place to hide yourselves, I'll count and when you're ready attack me. Together or individually I don't care, but come at me as though your lives are at risk. If we get hurt then that is what Falconstorm is for. Use your claws, use your teeth, expect to win even knowing you are going to lose to me. Lets see what you can do. Now go."
