The ginger and white healer finished dealing out the traveling herbs, before returning to where her own portion lay next to Tigerpaw. Pausing only to ensure Tallstrike and Poppythorn each consumed their bundle, Kindleflare ducked her head to lap up the mix of strengthening herbs at her paws. Dark amber eyes flicked to the growing apprentice at her side, and she smiled warmly, tail flicking softly against his flank in a gesture of comfort. The last few moons had been difficult on the Clans, and even Kindleflare found flickering images of the dreaded fox Gathering haunting her dreams at night.
She could only imaging what Tigerpaw was going through. Leaning over to press her forehead to her shoulder, she purred softly, to remind both of them they were not alone. Slowly, she rose to her paws and cleared her throat. "I-Is everyone r-ready?" She stammered softly, noting the nod offered by both warriors. When Tigerpaw gave her a positive signal, she curled her tail with a steadying inhale. "A-Alright, we can b-begin the journey. T-Tallstrike, Poppyth-thorrn, lead the w-way." With the blue-grey tom deferring to the blue-black she-cat for leadership, Poppythorn gave a sound of acknowledgement before ducking out of the medicine cat den.
The journey to the Moon Tree passed in relative quiet, Kindleflare keeping close to her apprentice as their paws crossed over terrain familiar to the ginger healer. Deep amber eyes glanced about to the snow drifting lazily from the sky, like bits of star dust coming to meet the earth. It was beautiful, the sight making up for the muddy ground beneath their paws. A-At least it i-isn't unbearably c-cold. She thought to herself, much preferring the Leafbare days with snow and warmer temperatures. Relatively speaking, of course. Eventually, the cavern to the Moon Tree drew into view. Picking up her pace slightly to catch the escorts a few paw steps ahead, she smiled.
"Y-You m-may wait just o-over there. I-I'll let you kn-know when the m-meeting is o-over." Poppythorn nodded at the medicine cat's words, altering her course to lead Tallstrike to the waiting area Kindleflare had indicated with her tail. Pausing to allow Tigerpaw to catch up with her again, the LightningClan medicine cat finished the walk to the entrance of the Moon Tree's cavern, and lowered herself to a seat on one of the drier patches of land. Blinking warmly at Tigerpaw, she smiled. "N-Not often that w-we're the f-first to arrive!" She mused, settling down to await the arrival of the other Clans. |

Are you sick of feeling sorry? And people saying not to worry?
After helping Kindleflare to prepare the traveling herbs for their journey to the moon tree, Tigerpaw took a moment to attempt to gather what little courage he could muster. It wasn't as bad as last time, at least. There'd been no sign of any foxes for moons since that horrible gathering attack. There'd been no terrible warning at the last meeting... only a relatively nice chat and visit with his sister, who had tried to reassure him about his own feelings of failure over the warning she had given him. Part of him was actually looking forward to this meeting, even if traveling so far still made him nervous after the fox attack. Especially since they didn't have as many guards as last time.
Kindeflare's affectionate reassurance helped as well, however, as she pressed her forehead to his shoulder and purred. He managed a soft purr in return, grateful for all the support she always offered him. As his mentor indicated they should head out, he stayed close to her side, ears flicking nervously, but at least he didn't find himself jumping at every noise, his fear not as overwhelming as it was on their last journey to the moon tree. The mud and cold made it rather miserable going, but he plodded onward, eager to reach the moon tree and the safety of its glowing roots, his sister's warmth and comfort in StarClan.
When the cavern came into view, his heart dropped momentarily as there were no other cats waiting for them. His mind immediately turned to the worst scenarios, wondering if something terrible had happened to keep the other medicine cats away, his amber gaze flitting about the area as he followed Kindleflare over to the entrance as though he might find them hiding behind a nearby rock. He jumped as Kindleflare commented on their being the first to arrive and slowly sat beside her, taking deep breaths to still his pounding heart. Right, they were just the first to arrive. Nothing bad had happened. Surely StarClan would keep medicine cats safe on their journey to the moon tree?
But they hadn't kept Dawnblossom safe at the gathering.
A tremble went through him and he pressed closer to Kindleflare at the memory. He didn't like being the first ones here. It made him realize just how isolated they were and it set him on edge. He hoped the others arrived soon.
Have you noticed that you're breathing? Look around and count your blessings. williams Ghost the Undead Goddess Justice Fawn @poptart BlooRey DVD

Dewfrost knew this would be the last walk she would make to the Moon Tree with her mentor at her side. It wasn't the full trip, but it was still important to acknowledge the part they walked side by side. Age hadn't crept up upon the pair, but hung over them as a final declaration in their journey together. More and more days passed where Swanfeather needed assistance, or directed cats to her apprentice for care without even sparing them a glance. Dewfrost was filling the paws prints left behind with an ease inspired by her living mentor, and the confidence Frostfang gave her. This final walk then, was the end of a journey and the beginning of a new one. She hadn't cried when she kept walking to the tree and Swanfeather stayed behind, though she felt like doing so. She had to remind herself that it was the natural progression in an apprentice's journey. A cat was trained to stand on their own four paws, and care for their clan as the new generation. Dewfrost had a different job than her clanmates as the next medicine cat, but she was trained to succeed as the warriors were, and she would do everything in her power to make her mentor proud in picking her those many moons ago. The warriors at her side jogged to keep up, Dewfrost's pace barely below a run as they traveled. She wasn't antsy to get there, to meet the other medicine cats on her own. Instead, she knew that if she stopped, she would want to go back and bring her mentor along. The young she-cat hadn't known a time alone, there was always the familiar presence of someone at her side. Tonight, She thought. Tonight, there are warriors at your side. You will make your mentor proud, stop worrying so much. The medicine cat rolled her shoulders as their pace slowed in sight of the Moon Tree, her long fur fluffed from the run, but she showed no sign in stopping to fix it. Turning a smile on her warrior companions as a thank you for traveling with her, Dewfrost left them outside the tree and trotted to the meeting place. Inside, her hammering heart immediately settled. Her paws slipped into the grooves left by past medicine cats, the soft hum of their starry ancestors swirling around her as comforting as her mother's tail. There was a peace she would always find in the close proximity to Starclan. Of all her duties, communicating with Starclan was the strongest, and easiest, and knowing the barrier between the living and dead was weaker here made Dewfrost's earlier worries fade. Even when Swanfeather passed, they would still be able to talk with one another here. "Hi Kindleflare, Tigerpaw. I hope you two are doing well." Another smile crinkled the corners of her eyes, Dewfrost genuinely glad to interact with the other medicine cats. -- Ghost the Undead Goddess Justice Fawn @poptart BlooRey DVD @zen Hellion

Sandblaze StoneClan was third to arrive. Sandblaze raised the feathered end of his tail to the group, flicking snow from his paws before pausing to make sure Ebonypaw was keeping up. Though her coat was far fluffier than his own, Sandblaze still thought she looked small and young, too young to be making such a hard journey before she'd experienced a proper exploration of their own territory.
But there hadn't been time for a slow introduction to the art of healing. Dawnblossom had sent him a sign, and Sandblaze was eager to carry out her will. Eager to speak with her again in the protective glow of the Moon Tree.
"Greetings Dewfrost, Kindleflare, Tigerpaw. I've brought someone with me tonight." Sandblaze beckoned the she-cat to his side for introductions. "This is Ebonypaw, my new apprentice." It was too soon, thought the healer. Too soon for him to be the sole medicine cat in the den. It had been a hard season of adjustment after the tragedy of Greenleaf, but Sandblaze had found strength to keep going.
It was getting a little easier, day by day. Training Ebonypaw would be a worthy distraction from missing Dawnblossom too much. 196 Words Ghost the Undead Goddess Justice Fawn @poptart BlooRey DVD @zen williams

Ebonypaw, Livin' in ruins of a palace within my dreams How proper!
The young she-cat had been quiet pleased with the fact she would be attending a meeting between so quickly after her new apprenticeship. Especially since she was not only still reeling from the glow of being picked for Sandblaze's new apprentice but she was also still getting used everyone calling her Ebonypaw.
But how she enjoyed the way it sounded.
It only took her a day or so to get used to sleeping with only one other cat around her. The first night was the hardest, the young she-cat had missed the scent and warmth of Rabbitfur, her mother, and it took her a long time to finally fall asleep to the steady snores of Sandblaze beside her.
With it only being a few days since Sandblaze and Ebonypaw were named in front of Stoneclan, there had only been a minimal amount of training and learning, not that that seemed to bother the bright apprentice.
After spending a long moment to quickly groom her already pristine fur, every long feathered end in place, Ebonypaw moved her attention to the herbs that were needed.
Needing only vocal guidance, the black she-cat had managed to pull together the herbs she and her mentor would need, as well as the extras for the two warriors that would join them. With Sandblaze's praise, Ebonypaw could feel a warmth rise through her thick black coat, though only the smallest wiggle of her stumped tail gave away any sign that she was happy with his praise.
"Come Sandblaze, we shouldn't keep the others waiting and I wouldn't want Stoneclan to show up last." Her voice was fairly straight, though of course it was hard to completely cover all the young she-cat's excitement.
She could tell he was hesitant to bring her along, though Ebonypaw could somewhat understand his worries. Dawnblossom had been lost all too recently, though the young she-cat didn't know much about her, not to mention there was still a fox on the loose somewhere within the valley's walls. It was also a harsh time, snow covered everything and it was very cold.
Ebonypaw was young, and despite her large stature as a six moon old cat, she was still small and new to the world around her.
That didn't stop her from keeping up with Sandblaze's stride as they made their way to the Mountain where Moon Tree resided, waiting quietly for those to sleep among her white roots.
With her head held high, fur fluffed up like a black cloud around her, Ebonypaw gave sure footsteps as she followed quietly after her new mentor. Flat paws were near quiet, if only there wasn't the slight crunch from the snow beneath her form, before it gave way to more harsher terrain.
Long whiskers twitched and ears trained forwards as pale green orbs widened, Ebonypaw's shoulder brushed against her mentor's flank as the grew closer to a group of waiting cats.
The other Medicine Cats.
Once again excitement started to curl around Ebonypaw, like a snake around it's prey. Her nub tail wriggled ever so slightly once more as she tried to remain as calm and collected as ever.
After all, she was a proper and respectful she-cat of Stoneclan.
The young bobtail drew forward when Sandblaze introduced her to give a low and respectful bow to her seniors before raising her head to fix them with a steady, pale mossy gaze. "Greetings, I am pleased to meet you tonight."
Ebonypaw slowly ran her sights over each cat, their scents all wafting over her pallet as she was curious as to which clan they all belonged to. And, of course, who was still left to show up. Though her gaze finally landed on the cat who seemed only a handful of moons older than herself.
Tigerpaw. That was what Sandblaze had called him, Kindleflare must be his mentor. As he sat closer to her than to the cat Sandblaze named as Dewfrost.
Ebonypaw was curious as to how long Tigerpaw had been an apprentice, of course other questions formed in her mind as well but she forced herself to fold her haunches and rest beside Sandblaze.
Rabbitfur would be proud of how respectful her daughter acted.

curiosity is not a sin... ...but we should exercise caution with our curiosity Shadowchaser The freezing mucky terrain of NightClan's territory was unpleasant underpaw; while snow could melt off limbs and fur once they went someplace warm, mud and plant matter weren't so easily gotten rid of. Shadowchaser didn't complain, however; as they left NightClan soil behind and drew closer to the mountains, the snow was deeper. It cleaned the mess from their paws, and though it chilled him more deeply than the mud had, he felt better. Though their peers would be understanding, Shadowchaser did not wish to arrive at their sacred ground with muddied feet or a sopping coat.
Winter's icy breath blew against chestnut brown fur, fluffing him further to block out what he could of the wind. Familiar shapes were gathered around the mouth of the Moon Tree; Kindleflare and Tigerpaw (who greeted him with a mew so quiet, he almost hadn't heard it), Falconstorm, Dewfrost (he smiled warmly at the RainClan healer), a new face he did not recognize, and to his relief, Sandblaze.
"Seems like we're last. My apologies, I hope you were not waiting long." He looked with interest to the kitten that smelled of cool stone and sparse grass. She was introduced as Sandblaze's new apprentice, Ebonypaw. Shadowchaser smiled and dipped his head in greeting, but his heart pinched. It had been two seasons since Dawnblossom had died - and yet it felt too soon for Sandblaze to take on a student of his own. They had become new apprentices around the same time. He still remembered that awkward, leggy kitten he'd met at the gathering...
He could not imagine the heartache Sandblaze was going through. It takes courage to press forward, like this. Shadowchaser admired Sandblaze's resolve and his dedication to his Clan. Falconstorm had lost his mentor many moons ago, and from what Shadowchaser had heard, it had hit TreeClan hard. The tom had yet to bring on his own pupil. Was that because of limited selection, or did the thought of replacing his mentor's old nest with someone else's make his heart hurt, too?
These thoughts would carry him to the Moon Tree, when the group of healers made the decision to step out of the cold and dark. medicine cat of nightclan | jk rowling | background image | table by phoenix@poptart @zen BlooRey DVD williams Ghost the Undead Goddess Justice(Skipped Jusice this round; treat Falconstorm as if he's already there)

Things would always change, nothing was destined to remain the same forever. This was the law of the land, and Smokefur was well aware that it applied to her just as much as it did anything else. The times when a trip to the moon tree was a exciting jaunt were long gone for Smokefur, and in their place nothing but a cold trudge remained. It certainly could have been worse, Smokefur wasn't alone as always Shadowchaser accompanied her. Thankful that the aching in her joints had leveled off as she aged, Smokefur found herself wondering how much longer her relationship with Shadowchaser would remain the same. Soon these trips would become too much for her, and she was thankful her companion had yet to suggest she take it easy. He knew better. Before that time came Smokefur prayed starclan would let her go in a dignified way, perhaps a fire. As Nightclan's patrol approached it was clear they had arrived last, and Smokfur remained silent as Shadowchaser apologized on their behalf.
