The calico she-cat had been resting in the apprentice’s den, exhausted after a long week of training. She had been working hard on her training with Storkleg but now that she was done training for the day she wanted to have a bit of fun. She knew she wasn’t to leave camp alone and decided that she would visit the stream that surrounded camp. The water in the stream is quite shallow and there was often another clan cat or two hanging around; perhaps there she would find someone to socialize with! She stood and padded out of the apprentice’s den, glancing around at camp as she made her way to the stream.
Leafbare was upon them now and the camp was bustling with activity. Snow had begun to fall and prey was scarce. There were lots of cats working to make sure the fresh-kill pile was fully stocked, cats fetching bedding, and other small tasks to do. She had been trying to help around camp as much as she could, eager to aide her clanmates wherever she could. It was so important to her that she pulled her weight, wanting nothing more than to be a loyal RainClan cat. She paused, feeling a bit guilty she wasn’t working now. She shook her head and continued towards the stream while convincing herself that she had earned a bit of a break.
She stepped out of the camp and breathed in the cold air deeply. Snow had settled on the bank of the stream and she found herself wondering if the water had frozen at all. Larkpaw made her way to the edge of the stream and crept forward. To her surprise, the snowy surface held her weight and she did not feel the cold wet of the stream water. It must have frozen, at least close to the bank! With a paw, she swept some snow off of a patch of ice – it’s cool surface making shiver a little. The she-cat found herself thankful she had a thicker coat, it certainly came in handy in leafbare.
As she stared into the little icy patch she could see some tiny minnows schooling under the surface. She batted at the ice gently with a sheathed paw, unable to help herself from the instinct to catch the little fish. She purred in amusement as she stared down, and bent to get closer to the ice. The tiny school of minnows were alerted to the intruder by the shadow she cast, and they disappeared in an instant. She let out a sigh. What in StarClan's name was there to do in leafbare?
