The smallest child of Sootfeather was an apprentice, and he could not wait to learn. He already knew a lot about camp- or so he thought as one proud of their own intelligence at such a young age- and he knew there was a world out there that the adults in his life seemed to enjoy spending time in it. Now, it was Privetpaw's turn to be in that world.

The ceremony had gone by quickly-and he was disappointed by that, shouldn't the clan be more excited to have three new apprentices? new warriors in training?- and he was given a mentor, Bonetail. The young apprentice rolled the name around his mouth, though that was as far as it went. There were so many parts of it that he couldn't say, and he was frustrated how it jammed in his throat at every step. He didn't bother trying to speak it then when he got his mentor's attention later, using a few considerate tail taps against the tom's side instead. When the attention was gained, he gestured outside camp and gave the older tom one of his short sentences. "p-p-plan for us?" He could only hope the warrior understood without mentioning the word 'training'.

A single eye opened, green amidst a rim of pristine white fur. Bonetail regarded the cat behind this disturbance, the way he might regard a worm that had suddenly gained sentience. If there was one thing he loathed, it was being woken up from a nap. It was impossible to tell the time of day (or not) when you slept as far back into the den as Bonetail did; it was a space reserved for the oldest, more senior warriors—but that hadn't stopped Bonetail from somehow making his nest there.

It was only the occasional shuffle of paws and the murmur of orders (or the always-irritating dawn-patrol assignment) that gave Bonetail any sense of time at all. He had become a master at ignoring his body's natural desire to rise in the evening and spend the night doing whatever it was NightClan cats did.

Hunting.

Fighting.

Training a little stuttering piece of frogbait like this one.

"p-p-plan for us?"

Bonetail ignored him, rolling over. Either the kit would get the message, or he wouldn't. Bonetail didn't care.

Privetpaw fell back onto his haunches at Bonetail's response, or lack of one. The small apprentice huffed with concern. He had taken the time to find his mentor, which wasn't hard once he had gotten the name out of his throat. The other warriors had given Privetpaw a look when he had asked, one he hadn't understood in the moment but now it was starting to click with a disappointing result. It was something sad, "oh poor you," the cats had said without speaking the words. He had seen that look before, but not in the context of his relation with another. It was primarily related to his voice, or perhaps, the lack of a consistent way to voice himself.

The tom circled the lump that was his mentor, thinking of a way to get Bonetail's attention properly. He couldn't upset him, he wanted to actually get work done and making the older tom grumpier wasn't the way to go about it. Privetpaw was small so he couldn't just push his mentor. But... he grinned, a sly little smile as a spark grew into a flame.

With a wiggle of his rump, Privetpaw leapt, and landed solidly on his mentor's head with a dramatic flop. "W-we h-have t-t-o, to t-t-rain!" He said with a wail in the words. It was a sharp enough tone to gather attention. If anything, the other warriors in the den could make Bonetail feel bad enough to at least get them out of camp. "I want-nt t-to be-be, hh, b-best-t war-warr, b-best-t s-s-so you c-can, can sssleep a-all day af-af-aft-'ter 'ma f-full war-warrr-or."

It was as if someone had dropped a wailing squirrel right on top of his head. Bonetail's muzzle was smooshed into his bedding by the little frogbait's jump; Bonetail's neck stiffened, spine bristling as he reared up like a cobra, shaking the insolent little tick off his face. "Sit. Still. And stop stuttering!" Great StarClan, it was like listening to a grackle fight a crow; he found the sound of the kit's speech impediment to be grating on his ears, jarring him out of what was supposed to be a much-desired rest.

Bonetail's green and blue eyes narrowed in offense, his attention momentarily stolen by the taunting mrrow-ow-ow of Moondance. The independent-minded huntress watched him with laughing eyes, and Bonetail's namesake flicked, as irritable as a disturbed grass snake.

"Just give up, Privetpaw. Ask one of the other warriors to train you. Bonetail's not good for anything."

Bonetail should have felt more riled up by Moondance's obvious taunts, but he managed a snort. It was either stay here with her, or train this little earth-worm to be a 'f-full war-warrr-or.' Slowly, as if the act of doing so were of such massive inconvenience to him as to earn the endless pitying tears of StarClan, Bonetail rose from his nest. He stretched.

He stretched some more.

Finally, Bonetail pushed the kitten out of the warriors den, sneering at Moondance as he passed. "Sleeping so soon? You're getting old, Moondance."

Moondance bristled. "You sleep even more than I do, fleabag."

Bonetail chuckled. "Raising three of NightClan's best warriors can take a lot out of you." Alright, so Lilyfrost had done most of the raising, but Bonetail wasn't about to miss out on the credit. He had spent a large chunk of time simply kitsitting, using them as much as they used him; he tolerated their kit antics, and in return, got out of most patrols.

And now they had Crowflame, Graywolf and Ghostshadow in the warriors den.

Bicolored eyes flashed, haughty and challenging. "Remind me again, how your kits are doing? Oh, wait..."

Moondance snapped her teeth at him, forcing Bonetail to side-step to avoid actually getting bitten. He nearly ran into his apprentice. With a scowl, he nudged Privetpaw further in front. "You wanted training, didn't you? Quit dragging your paws."

He should probably feed the little earth-worm before he wandered around showing him the territory, but Bonetail ignored this. Maybe the earth-worm would get so tired and hungry, they could cut the training session short?

Now that was a plan.

Privetpaw spilled off his mentor's head like beads of water being shaken from a duck's side. He scrambled quickly to his paws, ignoring his mentor for a brief moment to clean up the moss the pair has scattered by their interactions. If Bonetail's aggressive attitude affected Privetpaw, he didn't let it show. There was only so much the apprentice could do against the grump of another cat who seemed hell-bent on being sour.

I did wake him up from his nap, Privetpaw pondered, watching the two older cats interact with interest. There was a laziness in Bonetail's system, as even this other warrior pointed out. The pity was bright in her voice and he felt his own response collide with the back of his teeth. His mentor instead reared up to the challenge, merely pushing Privetpaw out of the way. His head tilted, capturing their words between metaphorical claws. There was history there, and while the little tom didn't know how to use it now, he was planning on doing so in the future. 

Then the interaction was stopped like a cord was snapped, and Privetpaw stumbled as Bonetail leapt into him. "You wanted training, didn't you? Quit dragging your paws." A surprisingly flash of venom filled Privetpaw's mouth, fueled by the aggression he was receiving. He spoke deliberately slow to ensure he was understood, words low as a growl, a brief glimpse into the kit's snarky intelligence. "You did-didnt ssay whe-where w're hh-head-headed." How can I lead us there, came the unspoken follow up sentence. His green eyes were narrowed briefly in frustration, then the look vanished quick as a blink, easily missed. Privetpaw turned, waving his tail for Bonetail to pick up his pace and tell him where to go, and the kitten trotted towards the camp entrance.

If Bonetail noticed that fleeting look of venom, he didn't say anything. Instead, the white-furred warrior circled the prey pile as if considering his chances of getting a few bites in before the older warriors thought it necessary to reprimand him. A chubby looking finch was temptingly close by, and Bonetail's jaws watered. He could take the finch's feathers and use it for additional nest bedding. A good reward for having to deal with the earth-worm and the rest of his peers for days and days on end.

A ripple of annoyance passed over Bonetail as he noticed his father's eyes upon him. Blackwolf was giving him the kind of cold, unbroken stare the old scarred tom used for insolent apprentices. Bonetail snorted, deciding a momentary snack wasn't worth his father's unending disapproval.

"Take your pick," Bonetail drawled, finding Privetpaw near the entrance. "Muddy pools. Flooded marsh. Ambush pond. Black woods. Pineneedle clearing." He mentioned the fight-training area last, finding he didn't particularly want to watch Privetpaw flail around in mock battle. Bonetail's natural talents lied in combat. It was one of the few things he had been given by Blackwolf apart from the two-colored eyes.

That didn't mean he liked teaching others how to fight, though; in fact, he'd much rather have his tail-fur plucked out one by one over mentoring some empty-headed kitten on how to defend himself. The fur would eventually grow back; he had no way of recovering wasted time.

Alabaster ears caught snippets of conversation; it was the start of another NightClan evening, but the promise of a full moon in just a few short hours had the camp buzzing like a beehive. Bonetail's muzzle began to smooth. With any luck, Privetpaw would be invited to the Gathering. With StarClan's divine mercy, Bonetail wouldn't.

Then he would be free to sleep as much as he wanted while the remaining warriors and apprentices were idle. Well, as idle as they could be with his cranky old badger for a father left as defacto leader in Foxstar's and Briarthroat's absence.

Bonetail snorted. Maybe he'd be better off finding an empty nest in a tree and curling up there? At least then he'd get some StarClan forsaken peace.

Notes: based on the Gracklepaw/Darkstorm thread, Bonetail and Privetpaw have been training together since LF 3rd! It is now LF 30th in this thread! Safe to say they've already done a territory introduction, so this can be a more in depth hunting thread or even battle training. (OR we can backdate it to the 4th of LF and get a fresh start on Privet's training! Whatever you like! DM me and we'll talk about it <3) I don't mind editing my post to fit.
