It had been Palepaw’s suggestion: to slip off for a moment and test their hunting skills in the woods as a team. Ashpaw had taken a little persuasion, but once he’d agreed, he had wholeheartedly entered into the excursion. Ashpaw had been the one to call the lie to Rowanstripe as they passed, telling him that they were just going to the Moss Meadow and that they’d be back soon. Not to worry.
Talking and laughing as they went, short legs eating up the distance between the Woods and camp, and taking just a short break before they entered it, falling quiet as they began to stalk. Palepaw watched as her brother spotted a mouse and quietly crept up on it, pausing for just a moment before springing and pinning it before giving the kill-bite. “Well done!” Palepaw praised. “My turn now.”
Carefully padding through the trees, the ginger-and-white apprentice halted at the sight of a thrush pecking in the dirt. Cheered by the thought of showing up at camp carrying a bird, with Ashpaw having only caught a mouse, Palepaw sank low, held her breath…
Ashpaw shrieked behind her and a heartbeat later, two bodies plowed into her. Her ears were suddenly filled with snarls and screams, her body crushed to the ground, and she flailed wildly, panic making her heart pound. They rolled off her and she caught sight of the danger at last: a fox had its fangs buried in her brother’s body and was shaking him ruthlessly. Jumping to her feet, Palepaw screeched a challenge at it, diving in to rake at the fox’s eyes.
When it turned on her, she fled- only looking back to make sure it was following. If she could lure it away… surely there had to be warriors out here who would hear if she screamed?
She hadn’t expected a second fox. When it bounded from the bushes in front of her, the instinct to climb a tree took over. Scrambling up the trunk of one, Palepaw clung to a limb, shaking as she stared down at the two; lifting her voice, she yowled as loudly as possible- hoping someone would be close enough. Hoping someone would hear.
She could see Ashpaw still: her brother was on his paws now, but wobbling badly as he walked. Was he hurt? “Run, Ashpaw!” she shrieked at him, and then choked when she saw the first fox turn back to her brother and start toward him again. “No- no! Leave him alone! Ashpaw, run!” When she started to back down the tree to go to her brother’s aid, however, the second fox stepped forward, eyes gleaming in anticipation, and Palepaw froze, horror clutching her sharply as she realized she couldn’t do anything.
The fox’s snarl and her brother’s shriek rang through the air and Palepaw cried out in response, burying her face in her paws and wishing she could muffle her hearing too. There were no words in the screams, just agony and terror, and they seemed to last a lifetime; Ashpaw’s yowls cut off abruptly and the wood was suddenly dead silent- save for the quiet moaning of a young she-cat in shock.

Meadowpaw The calico apprentice faintly heard a scream coming from the Little Woods as she slipped back into camp after meeting up with Waspwing and from the urgency that took over her body she bounded towards the sound no longer an tiny kitten or apprentice with too large paws for her frame Meadowpaw was a full grown cat, awaiting only a ceremony to make her into the warrior she had dreamed about as a kit. " Mum, Daddy, Uncle Hawkstar, Waspwing, come quick I think someone's in trouble" She screamed out as she bolted through camp like fire was nipping at her paws , the urgency she felt turned to panic for as soon as she neared the meadow she smelt it. The stale air clinging to the hated image in her brain, one she had smelt before and it had cost Sootpaw, her sight... Fox. '" HELP.. HELP... FOX" The young apprentice yelled out screamed as she bolted into the clearing easily spotting the ginger and white coat of her niece, Palepaw and the metallic scent of blood.
Meadowpaw's eyes narrowed as she sped towards a fox holding a small bloodied object in it's mouth and her stomach sank when she saw that it was no object, it was a cat... " No... No... Ashpaw" she yowled in outrage, her nephew hanging limp, no sign of life overtaken his small frame and anger, along with a heavy dose of grief overtook Meadowpaw's better judgement. She swiped a paw at the fox in her anger ignoring the fact she was much smaller than the creature before her.
Meadowpaw never seen one up close before, its vile breath made her stomach turn and she snarled in warning to the second fox as it began to flank her left side, letting it know she could see it. " Dear Starclan, don't let me die before I avenge my friend" The female sent a quick prayer to her ancestors before launching her attack, a full on charge at the first fox, the one holding her sister's son in its putrid jaws.
Unfortunately the first fox managed to dart out of the way just in time before Meadowpaw could reach it, her hiss of agitation and eyes blazing caught the attention of the second fox as it darted foward to make it's attack. Meadowpaw shifted out of the way and using her hind paws launched herself onto the foxes back, it howled in pain as she dug her claws in and savagely bit at any flesh she could get a hold of. Her grief however had blinded her and she was quickly swung off so that she almost lay across the foxes muzzle her green eyes meeting its rage filled amber ones with a deadly glare. Sensing her chance Meadowpaw dug her claws into the soft part under the creatures eyes, drawing blood as she scratched the muzzle of the creature to prevent it biting her exposed hind legs. Unluckily a well timed grab had Meadowpaw's left hind leg trapped in the foxes jaws and with it she nearly screamed in pain when it bit down, blood oozing and her body paralyzed as the fox continued to thrash around. Eventually Meadowpaw was forced to let go of her claw hold on the foxes eyes, leaving two claw marks down the creatures muzzle as she was forced to let go, the momentum of the fox ripped her leg free but send the feline sailing though the air
The near adult apprentice collided with a tree, a heavy thump occurred as all the wind was knocked from her lungs, her leg and side ached but she shakily rose to her paws to stare down her assailant, The fox with blood oozing down its muzzle snapped it's jaws at her, seemingly liking the taste of her blood and was about to launch another attack on the she cat when something on the wind seemed to scare it off. It yipped to the fox holding Ashpaw's body and ran off into the woods, it's tail barely disappearing behind the foliage when Meadowpaw, on her three good legs, hobbled after it. All the while muttering murderous threats as her own tri-colored tail disappeared into the foliage. Frozenrain & Kestrelpaw "Meadowpaw, wait! Don't go off by yourself!" Kestrelpaw shouted after his sister, who had become a calico blur as she raced off into the territory. Smokestorm's voice rang through the stone encampment, a rescue patrol being hastily thrown together by the deputy. But he couldn't wait for that, not when his sister could have been throwing herself right into harm's way. The tom briefly touched his nose to Sootpaw's ear. "Stay here!" And took off after Meadowpaw, his heart pounding so hard he thought it would jump out of his mouth and shatter on the rocks. What if it's more foxes? What if someone's been attacked by an eagle? He hadn't heard the screech or whatever it was that sent Meadowpaw caterwauling into camp - but his blood ran cold with the possibilities.
Hawkdung! She's so fast! He lost sight of her quickly, and had to zigzag over the gritty, rocky terrain until he caught onto her scent. His tracking abilities were not precise or well honed (catching birds was more about sight, after all), but he managed to make progress.
The tang of blood mixed with fear scent, and his pulse kicked against his throat. No!
It was a confusing amalgamation of smells; Ashpaw's, Palepaw's, Meadowpaw's, foxes and-- Frozenrain? StoneClan's matriarch appeared a heartbeat after he sensed her, the she-cat's distinctive baby-blue eyes wide and piercing. "Find Meadowpaw, I'll find Palepaw."
Kestrelpaw nodded and hastily broke away in search of his sister.
Why didn't she mention Ashpaw? Does she know something I don't?
There was blood and bits of fur scattered everywhere, along with the deep, long-clawed impressions in the earth left by fox claws. It was the sight of a mauling. The fear scent and panic choked Frozenrain, her hackles raising - though she was somewhat soothed by the arrival of Smokestorm's patrol - as she called out for the missing she-cat. "Palepaw? Palepaw! If you can hear me, call as loudly as you can!" And if the apprentice was hurt too, or worse, dead, then there was very very little Frozenrain could do. Maybe with a bit of StarClan-given luck, Sandblaze or Dawnblossom had come with Smokestorm, but Frozenrain wasn't counting on that.
Frozenrain circled closer to the trees, praying to StarClan she wasn't too late. Please, StarClan. Not another young life lost.
Kestrelpaw heard a muffled thump, like something falling out of a tree. He raced towards the sound, arriving just in time to see the bottlebrush tail of a fox disappear into the brambles - and his sister, hobbling on three legs trying to chase after it. Kestrelpaw cried out in horror, envisioning the mangled, bloodied stump Beetlepaw had been left with after the attack on the nursery.
”Meadowpaw! Wait! You’re hurt!” He pounced to close the distance, grasping her tail in his teeth to tug her back, digging his paws into the ground to stop her from gaining so much as a mouselength more. ”We--have--to--get--you--too--Sandblaze--” he grunted around a mouthful of her fur.

The entire clan seemed to freeze in place as Meadowpaw came running past the camp and into the clearing, disappearing as quick as her words were spoken. All heads turned to follow her and Kestrelpaw as they sprinted out of the clearing. By instinct, Littlepetal stood to start after them, but paused to look to Smokestorm. Their eyes met briefly and Littlepetal understood to follow the deputy into the clearing.
Past Stoneclan’s barriers the musty odor of the foxes slammed her in the face and Littlepetal’s ears flattened with disgust. The fox must have just shown up because the stink hadn’t reached the camp before now. The silver tabby assessed the situation quickly, no foxes were in sight but there was a dark stain on the floor and droplets leading across the dirt to the foliage beyond the clearing. Meadowpaw and Kestrelpaw were struggling with each other near the treeline, Meadowpaw was visibly injured, but her brother’s frantic pulling didn’t seem to deter the apprentice one bit. The warrior dashed past Frozenrain and stopped to stand in front of the apprentices. They were almost the same size as her, but she managed to stand in front of Meadowpaw and force her to stop moving.
“Is anyone else hurt?” Littlepetal said with urgency on her tongue. The smell of blood was growing stronger, the smell of fox was deepening. “There might not be enough time to get everyone to safety,” Littlepetal thought, and looked to Smokestorm to assign orders to the patrol.

Smokestorm This gal right here's gonna rule the world No, I won't sit still and look pretty From the moment Meadowpaw had raced into the camp, yelling for help, Smokestorm had jerked into action- not even understanding what the danger was, but reacting swiftly all the same. "Meadowpaw!" she called after the apprentice, her tail lashing once in irritation as the younger she-cat whipped around and ran from the camp once more. Kestrelpaw followed on his sister's heels, so she wouldn't be alone at least, but Smokestorm would have rathered them both remain in camp.
"Morningsun, Sorrelclaw, Littlepetal, Dustclaw, you're with me. Everyone else, stay, be on guard!" Hawkstar could stay or come as he wished; with the four cats ready the moment she spoke their names, Smokestorm flicked her tail and burst from the camp, racing after Meadowpaw and Kestrelpaw. Fox! the she-cat was screaming, and Smokestorm's pelt prickled as she remembered the one she and Eagletalon had faced after Minkpaw had wandered from camp. That one had been driven off easily enough- had it just wandered across the boundary line to threaten StoneClan?
Neither apprentice was in sight, but their scent on the air led to the Woods and Smokestorm followed it as quickly as possible, making sure that she wasn’t overrunning the trail in case it twisted off in another direction. But it remained straight, and before too long the party of five reached the Woods, and the deputy’s attention was first caught by Kestrelpaw and Meadowpaw. A flick of her tail directed Littlepetal and Dustclaw to the apprentices, catching the reek of fox and wondering where the foul creatures were now.
Frozenrain’s voice caught Smokestorm’s attention next, and she beckoned Morningsun and Sorrelclaw to stay with her as she hurried to the older queen’s side. The familiar scents of Mistcloud’s two- and the stench of blood- filled her nose, and horror pricked at her at the sight of blood and torn fur that lay across the ground. Gray fur, her mind noted, but she recoiled from it- refused to believe it. “Where are they?” she asked Frozenrain, the beginnings of panic in her tone; but she didn’t wait for a reply before lifting her own voice. “Palepaw! Ashpaw!” Then, to the two she-cats she’d brought along, she snapped, “What are you just standing there for? Look for them!”
--
Voices- so many of them, and familiar too. It was a moment before they sank past the stupor she’d sunk into, lifting her face from her paws and turning her head to blink over at the forms of the cats she’d known since her birth. Frozenrain, Sorrelclaw, Morningsun- and her mother’s sister and the Clan’s deputy, Smokestorm.
Her chest began to heave with shallow breaths now, misery and relief whirling through her, and her voice shook as she spoke. “I’m o-o-over herrreeeee.” Deputy of StoneClan

Meadowpaw The full grown warrior to be almost snarled in irritation as her pursuit of the foxes that took Ashpaw skidded to a halt with a painful pressure on her tail letting her know that her brother was there, his words muffled by her own fur in his mouth. As if it wasn't hard enough to move already Littlepetal soon stood in her path and after a brief stare down with the warrioress the apprentice finally backed down, slumping to the ground as the pain of her leg caught up with what was happening around her. " The fox, it has Ashpaw, let me go I need to get him for Mistcloud" She hissed at both Littlepetal and Kestrelpaw but since neither backed down she relaxed, exhaustion taking over her frame and with a powerful tug she managed to free her tail from her brother's jaws, weeping loudly as she stared off into the treeline, her eyes glassy with unshed tears and it seemed as if she was staring straight through Littlepetal, she did not react to the warrior in any way until she released the breath she didn't even realize she was holding. " Where is Palepaw, where is my neice, I have to see her, I have to make sure she is safe" she squeaked out, the blood loss now starting to cloud the edges of her vision but her focus as razor sharp as her ears narrowed in on the frail broken voice of her sister's remaining kit. "She's over there!!!" Meadowpaw yelled her head jerking towards the sound, she stared at the spot for a few seconds before she finally seemed to fully acknowledge her half sister and Kestrelpaw. " Where is Waspwing or Mum and Dad?" she rounded on her full sibling with accusing eyes. Smokestorm was cool, but her half sister was so.... militant that she would have preferred Waspwing's smooth drawl or her mother's kind words. Her father had always been a source of comfort to the apprentice since she was a tiny kit, Meadowpaw was no doubt a daddy's girl but right now all she wanted was a bit of cob web for her leg and a long nap. " I.. d...don..t wanna s...sss...see ... Sandblaze til.. I g... get him back " she mummered before her eyes closed and she lost consciousness completely.

MorningsunThe long-haired ginger she-cat nodded her head and jumped to her paws and was at once to Smokestorm's side. She was ready to fallow the deputy. She followed in step with no issues. She kept her eye out for the missing clan-mates. As she followed the deputy and they got to the place they were told the missing clan-mates where. She didn't even wait for Smokestorm to say look for them. She was already off to look for them. She then thought she heard someone's voice. "Over there," she yelled to the other clan-mates that joined her in the search. She rushed to where she heard the voice after she told Frozenrain, Sorrelclaw, and the clan deputy Smokestorm. She got to the apprentice's side first. "Over here!" she called again to Frozenrain, Sorrelclaw, and Smokestorm so it is easier for them to get to one of the apprentices that they were looking for. "It is okay, we will make sure you see Sandblaze when we get you back to camp." she meowed calmly as to try and keep the apprentice calm. Taxx williams

Frozenrain & Kestrelpaw "The fox, it has Ashpaw, let me go I need to get him for Mistcloud!"
Kestrelpaw gasped, releasing his sister's tail. "A-Ashpaw? But!" StarClan, no. If the foxes had carried off such a young apprentice... Kestrelpaw now understood his sister's fervor, but he couldn't bring himself to regret preventing her wild, bloody pursuit of the foxes. She would've made an easy second meal for a fox; the smell of Meadowpaw's blood made him flatten his ears, worry mixing in with stomach-bile to create a roiling cocktail of nausea in his belly.
He blinked gratefully at Littlepetal, realizing the warrior had stood in front of his sister, blocking her path until she eventually gave up - and rounded on him with a sharp cry. "Probably out hu-hunting," he mewed abruptly, startled, his concern giving way to full-blown alarm as his littermate keeled over. Kestrelpaw threw himself in front of Meadowpaw's flank, grunting as her weight toppled into his back and shoulders, Kestrelpaw having managed to at least sort-of catch her. "Help get her onto my back," he grunted to Littlepetal, feeling the pressure on his paws as he crouched as long as he dared before getting up became impossible.
Meadowpaw wasn't especially heavy, but they weren't little kits anymore. Her sick days in the medicine cat's den were over.
--
Relief swept over her like a cool breeze, partially soothing the worry in her heart as she found Palepaw fixed tightly to a tree. She looked unscathed, physically; the haunted look in her eyes promised many moons ahead of psychological damage; long, sleepless nights, even longer nightmares, and... profound loss.
The littermates had been close.
"I believe the foxes took Ashpaw," Frozenrain's gaze was locked with Smokestorm's, delivering this grim news with conviction. It was a tone that suggested no hope. How would their deputy handle this? It was her sister's on kit that had been taken, her nephew, her kin. But Smokestorm had to stay rational; should the deputy's reason waver, Frozenrain would not hesitate to do what she could to keep the situation under control.
In a softer voice that lacked the somberness of just a moment ago, Frozenrain approached the base of the tree beside Morningsun, her gaze on the apprentice. "You're alright, Palepaw. You're safe now. Do you think you can come down on your own? If not, I'll come up and get you." Her tree climbing skills left much to be desired.
But she would always do what must be done to protect her Clan.

Littlepetal held her ground, emotions from Meadowpaw and Kestrelpaw could have upturned trees if they were able, so the tabby warrior kept her expression calm and her stance strong in the face of her clanmates’ peril. Her heart ached with adrenaline as the smell of blood and fox continued to surround them, ebbing and flowing with the breeze that swept through the clearing. Meadowpaw’s outbursts were erratic in volume, it was clear she wanted to be a hero but her body was betraying her. The weaker the apprentice’s voice became the more her eyes closed, Littlepetal jerked forward in surprise as Meadowpaw fell over onto Kestrelpaw’s side. [break][break]
The silver she-cat watched with both sorrow and admiration as Kestrelpaw struggled to hoist Meadowpaw on his back, the two were roughly the same size but Kestrelpaw was considerably stockier, the developing muscles in his back and legs would grow stronger in time but shock and fatigue kept him from his full abilities. “Please, don’t push yourself,” Littlepetal said softly, and scooped her paw underneath Meadowpaw’s slack chest, lifting her gently to shift the weight from Kestrelpaw’s back onto the warrior’s leg.[break][break]
“Smokestorm,” she called, looking at the deputy, “she can’t hold on much longer, I’ll take the two of them back to camp.”[break] She paused to receive further orders from her deputy, dipping her head down to grasp Meadowpaw firmly by the back of her neck. The apprentice was much too old to be carried this way but it was the least wounded part of her body and the warrior didn’t want Kestrelpaw to exert himself. She made eye-contact with the tabby apprentice and motioned with her head towards camp.[break][break]
As Littlepetal started running towards the Medicine Cat den she noticed a bloodstain along the side of her leg where she had lifted Meadowpaw off of Kestrelpaw’s back.[break][break]
As the two cats neared the medicine cat's den, Littlepetal rested Meadowpaw on Kestrelpaw's back, gently, and instructed him to go inside and help Sandblaze while she went to get more help from other clan cats. On the other side of camp Dustclaw and some other warriors stood, looking concerned for the activites going on. Littlepetal relayed Smokestorm's orders as quickly as she could before padding back to join Kestrelpaw in the Medicine Cat's den.
