B luepaw weaved her slender frame through the tall grass, squinting as the sun beamed down on her back. the wind blew softly but it made no difference, the heat still felt magnified to her shoulders and head. the grass which was pushed and packed down from the snow for so many months now stood just tall enough to tickle the insides of her ears each time a breeze pushed itself around her. the terrain was cool beneath her sweating paws, the calluses of her training were slowly beginning to form but she could still feel faint rocky and grassy textures between her toes. she came out here to be alone. this morning she was awakened by nursery kits and the chatter of elder warriors struggling to hear each other, bluepaw felt overwhelmed by the number of sounds thundering around the apprentice’s den and something in her stomach told her to get out. her heart beat loudly in her chest as she entered the tall grass but when there was nothing around her but the far away breeze and the sun she felt a little more at ease, at least for a while. now it was too hot. springtime had done away with her winter fur but she felt as if it covered her body ten-fold. she was irritated again and couldn’t seem to find an inch of shade in this seemingly endless meadow, the farther she went the hotter it seemed to get. frustrated, she stopped abruptly and sat down, ears flat against her head and her tail thumping, annoyed, on the ground behind her. she craned her neck so it dipped under what little shade the grass gave her and closed her eyes. she breathed deeply through her nose for a moment, closing her eyes, trying to soothe the frustration that tangled itself in her chest. she heard the grass shuffle around in the distance, her ears twitched towards the noise but her eyes were still closed. there was nowhere bluepaw could sit alone, nowhere for her to be calm. whatever cat approached her was in for a rude introduction to an irritated she-cat. L Y N X P A W I've got the eye of a fighter Dancing through the fire Lynxpaw had made the most of her newfound rank. No longer under the demand to remain in camp, she had completely ignored the rule that said she had to be accompanied by a warrior and made her escape. Plowing through the grass that seemed to be absolutely everywhere on LightningClan territory, she paused just a moment as a scent touched her nose. A deep inhale placed the smell: definitely not an intruder, unfortunately- she wouldn’t have minded tackling an enemy and seeing them off her land.
No, it was Bluepaw, a fellow apprentice. What was she doing out here alone? Well, why not go and see?
Darting forward, Lynxpaw made no effort to mask her approach; she sprang from the grass with a yowl and skidded to a halt right in front of the older apprentice. “HA! I smelled you!” she announced loudly, one ear flicking off a shred of grass. “Why are you out here, and not hunting, or fighting? Is Lakefur around?” And you're gonna hear me roar

B luepaw didn’t move, didn't even flinch, as some of the tall grass bent with Lynxpaw’s body as she darted through it, touching Bluepaw softly on the head. Lynxpaw wasn’t exactly the most quiet apprentice in the territory, making Bluepaw’s fur bristle with irritation. Of all the apprentices to find her, out of all her clanmates to run in to in the tall grass, it had to be her. She would have rather run into a fox. The soft gray she-cat slowly opened her eyes and turned toward her fellow apprentice. If looks could kill Lynxpaw would have been gutted. Bluepaw gritted her teeth to hold back an outright scathing response, continuing her deep glare on the tabby for a few seconds before abruptly standing and walking away, folding the grass under her paws. Her tail hung low behind her and her claws dug into the hard earth to try and keep herself from lashing out. Taxx hope this is ok! kept it short so lynxpaw had more time to irritate her before blue explodes ;p

L Y N X P A W I've got the eye of a fighter Dancing through the fire The glower that met her appearance momentarily confused Lynxpaw, but she quickly recovered and met the scowl with a sniff. “What are you so angry about? I’m not doing anything, so stop looking at me like that.” She held Bluepaw’s eyes as the older apprentice glared, but no reply came; then the tabby was on her paws and turning away. Oblivious, Lynxpaw missed the rigid set of her shoulders, the irritated twitch of her tail, and the unsheathed claws that sank into the ground with each of her steps.
“Hey!” the younger spluttered, and bounded after Bluepaw. “I asked you a question! Aren’t you going to answer? What are you doing, where are you going? Are you on an assessment?” Her fur prickled in excitement at the thought, and it didn’t cross her mind that she ought to leave Bluepaw to it if she were. She kept after the older apprentice, following along and quiet more a moment before piping up once more. “You’re not very friendly, are you?” And you're gonna hear me roar neversky This ought to do it for Bluepaw, yeah?

L ike thousands of gnats biting at the skin along her back, Bluepaw’s fur twitched in irritation with each syllable that sputtered out of Lynxpaw’s mouth. She could feel her peer trotting close behind her, chattering, bouncing, as if she was somehow powered by Bluepaw’s growing fury. The more they walked in tandem through the grass the more energy she seemed to consume, the more exhausted Bluepaw felt. The gray she-cat’s paw pads were sweating into the ground from the sun beating down on her back, dirt and small twigs sticking to the webbing of her feet between her toes. Her glare was so sharp in the ground her brow started to cramp a little. And the wind blew, shuffling the grass around them. And Lynxpaw fell silent. For the first time in what seemed like three eternities. Bluepaw’s expression softened. Bluepaw hoped and prayed the apprentice got the hint and wandered off, leaving to her thoughts and letting the older she-cat find her way home. Alone... But her voice. It appeared from thin air, again, like a ghost haunting Bluepaw so vehemently she had to be a demon. An angry being sent by Starclan to punish her. What had she done? What did she do to deserve this? Why can’t she be somewhere, anywhere that isn’t here? Lynxpaw’s tiny voice, yet so, so loud, echoed through Bluepaw’s head like a crow’s call in the distance. Her vision seemed to blur. In one fluid movement Bluepaw flipped around to face the tabby, baring her teeth. She reached out to pin Lynxpaw beneath her paw with a dull thump to the ground. Her claws weren’t supposed to extend completely but in that quick flash of fury they did. “ Will you please...!” A pause, a heartbeat. The reflection of her actions replayed before her in an instant and Bluepaw paused. She didn’t mean to actually lash out, but something inside went too far. Looking down at Lynxpaw, Bluepaw felt her own chest clench. Taxx left it wide open so lynx can dart out of the way but if you want her to be pinned, feel free :9

L Y N X P A W I've got the eye of a fighter Dancing through the fire The speed of Bluepaw’s lunge caught Lynxpaw off guard, and the breath rushed from her lungs as she hit the ground, the older apprentice’s paws firm on her chest to keep her there. Pain pricked, barely, through her thick fur, and the younger realized that Bluepaw’s claws were unsheathed. For just a few heartbeats, surprise held her still, and quiet, and then fury swept through her once again. “Get off!” Deliberately loud and shrill, she screeched, and kicked up with her hind paws at the same time to try and push Bluepaw off.
“I wasn’t doing nothing, and you can’t tell me what to do anyway, you’re not my mentor! You’re just an apprentice like me!” The rustle of grass caught her attention and Lynxpaw turned her head to where Harestrike had appeared; Lynxpaw directed her next words at him. “Tell her that she can't tell me what to do, Harestrike!” And you're gonna hear me roar neversky Left it open whether Blue lets her up or not

HARESTRIKE
40 MOONS LIGHTNINGCLAN SENIOR WARRIOR There's only one king, and there's only one crown Harestrike had been watching the scene unfold from the tall grasses, seeing Firestar's short-tailed daughter traipse after Bluepaw and chattering as loudly as a spring chickadee. He'd smirked, watching the signs of annoyance increase until Bluepaw eventually lashed out - catching both her opponent and her mentor by surprise. Harestrike recovered more quickly, and intervened before all of this got out of hand.
"Neither one of you's supposed to be out here by yourselves," he replied, tone cool and authoritative as he looked each 'paw in the eye. "Two apprentices is still a few warriors short of a real party. Since you're out here, you get to check the sun stones with me."
Harestrike deliberately turned and bounded away, calling over his tabby-striped shoulder. "Or you can go back to camp and tell Redscar you wandered off without permission! Your choice!" Notoriously fast, the warrior didn't immediately slow down. Rather, he let them burn off some energy (especially Lynxpaw) in their efforts to catch up. He'd originally left camp in search of Bluepaw, bearing the news that her mentor had been switched from Lakefur onto him to finish her training.
It had been fun to see her lash out at Lynxpaw. She had good reflexes. Hard to say, though, if she had a short fuse or if Lynxpaw was very good at getting on Bluepaw's nerves. Harestrike suppressed a chuckle. Maybe it was both? No, if it was both, Lynxpaw would have had tufts of fur missing.
And it's looking like me

B luepaw’s heart was beating so fast she was sure it was visible through her coat. The two apprentices were statues among the trampled grass around them. Time stood still, but Lynxpaw’s sudden shrill voice seemed to bring both of them back to life, making the grey she-cat jump slightly in surprise. Bluepaw felt the tabby kick at her stomach with her hind legs and she immediately lifted her front paws and backed up a few steps, her face frozen in stunned shock. Bluepaw’s eyes were wide with surprise as Lynxpaw shouted at her but Bluepaw wasn’t able to look her in the face, she just stared at the ground until the swaying movement of grass and Lynxpaw’s demanding made her head snap upwards, looking straight in the face of a senior warrior. Where did the oxygen go? Bluepaw’s breathing became faster as Harestrike entered the small clearing to face the apprentices, his tall stature dwarfed both of them and if Bluepaw’s jaw dropped it would have hit the floor. Never one for seeking out trouble, Bluepaw was sure she would be given a suspension, or something of the sort. Some kind of punishment, she couldn’t imagine what, but as Harestrike scolded the two apprentices the only thing on Bluepaw’s mind was being stripped of the ability to even become a warrior. At the time she wasn’t aware of how ridiculous that sounded, she was just so scared of being punis-- Suddenly, Harestrike bounded off into the tall grass and Bluepaw’s train of thought was completely derailed. Her light green eyes darted from Lynxpaw to where Harestrike had disappeared and in an instant began sprinting to catch up to him, much preferring the company of an experienced warrior than someone who she had just embarrassed herself in front of. In the distance Bluepaw could hear Harestrike running through the grass, a soft airy shuffling sound like leaves as the wind blew let her know as he turned and how fast he was going. Her claws were out, they clutched the dirt as she ran giving her traction. The sun was setting but the rays still buried themselves deep in her fur, she felt flushed and exhausted but continued running until the meadow turned into grasslands and Harestrike was able to be seen in the distance, no longer entwined in the prairie’s tall weeds. L Y N X P A W I've got the eye of a fighter Dancing through the fire Lying flat on her belly, Lynxpaw eyed Harestrike as the tom scolded them both, but it turned quickly into an order to follow. The Sun Stones? Great! Better than going back to camp and doing nothing.
"Wait for me!" she yowled, breaking into a run and doing her best to keep up despite her youth and soft muscles. She wasn't about to be left behind, no way! "Tell him yourself!" she retorted, and then realized what she'd said and scrambled to take it back. "No, wait, he knows I'm already out here, he sent me!"
Lynxpaw had no idea which way the Sun Stones were, but she could just see Bluepaw's tail through the grass and she followed it, having no other way of trailing the tom who'd disappeared through the stalks that reached above her head.
The grass trailed off, leading to the tumbled boulders that served as a marker, to show clearly the border between LightningClan and StoneClan- and where she'd met that pesky StoneClan apprentice. And where they had also been attacked by a fox. Not entirely the best day of her life.
"What do we do now?" she asked, turning to the warrior and waiting for his instructions, thoroughly ignoring the other apprentice's presence and fixing all her attention on the warrior. And you're gonna hear me roar

HARESTRIKE
40 MOONS LIGHTNINGCLAN SENIOR WARRIOR There's only one king, and there's only one crown "Now, we meet up with the rest of the patrol." Harestrike flicked his tail ahead, where three figures had been loitering in the tall grasses just a few foxlengths in front of them. Dawnflight, yet another sibling Harestrike couldn't claim to be particularly close to (or even like all that much), Tallstrike, and Desertblaze, his first apprentice.
Harestrike greeted them with a nonchalant mew, conserving his strength for the long walk along the borders. When Bluepaw was close enough for conversation, Harestrike caught the younger cat's eye. "Lakefur's sprained her ankle. I'll be taking over your training from now on." Thus the patrol. It wasn't his favorite method of getting to know others - he'd rather test her mettle in the trampled clearing, see how she handled herself in a fight - but he'd been given a duty. Might as well catch two rabbits with once pounce than give himself extra work.
"Keep up!" Harestrike brushed past the other warriors to take the lead on this patrol. He was only two moons younger than Tallstrike; the age gap was so minimal, Harestrike considered himself more senior simply because he had the strength to take initiative. "Watch out for snakes, little 'paws," taunted the tabby and white warrior. "They know apprentices are easy meals."
That ought to keep them focused. Patrols were boring, and the sooner they realized that the sooner he'd start having to hear them whine about it. At least this way they'd have something to watch out for.
And it's looking like me

As she approached Harestrike she slowed to a trot in an attempt to catch up to him but still remain behind, but the high twang of Lynxpaw’s voice sounded behind her and Bluepaw’s brow furrowed visibly, the sound that came out of her fellow apprentice made her want to grit her teeth but she made sure to breathe in slowly and do her best to keep the tabby out of her peripherals. From behind Harestrike’s tall frame some other warriors could be seen in the distance, standing idly by the Stoneclan borders. Bluepaw swallowed, feeling anxious to be around so many of her superiors, but if she could pretend to be at least a fraction less annoying than Lynxpaw she figured she would make a pretty good impression.[break] [break]
Harestrike greeted the party as they approached and Bluepaw looked around at the other warriors. Their eyes were on the two apprentices, she could see in their expressions they had high expectations and Bluepaw hoped she didn’t embarrass herself, her chest ached with nervousness but she tried to suppress it, jogging forward slightly to stand almost side-by-side with Harestrike. As the patrol began to move along the border Harestrike leaned toward Bluepaw and spoke softly:[break][break]
“...I'll be taking over your training from now on.”[break][break]
Bluepaw blinked in surprise and her eyes turned downcast towards the dirt in thought, she hadn’t had a lot of time training with Lakefur but was hopeful they would get along well. This turn of events certainly impacted the future of their professional relationship, but Bluepaw could see that Harestrike was a strong mentor. He kept Bluepaw on her toes and she was able to keep up with him during their short first encounter. He had stumbled upon a surprising turn of events with Bluepaw’s sudden outburst with Lynxpaw, but maybe that was a good thing, she thought. If anyone was able to turn sudden flashes of anger into something she could use as a warrior, it would be Harestrike. [break][break]
The hot sun sat lower in the sky than it did when she began her trek into the meadow, even though the beams still pierced her fur and her paws ached between the pebbles and thistles, Bluepaw felt strangely at ease.
