Fernpaw Apprentice of RainClan
Newleaf's arrival, after the albeit mild cold and hunger of leafbare, was welcome. After a successful morning's fishing trip, Fernpaw was allowed a moment to relax and eat before Rushwhisker called for her again for another training session, or patrol, or hunting trip. She took the reprieve gratefully, snagging a vole from the pile; a glance around the camp and she wandered over to Brookfall, who was sitting alone.
Dropping the vole at her paws, she waited for the tom to glance over at her. Dipping her head to him in a mute gesture of respect, Fernpaw sat, curling her tail around her paws before she spoke. "Hi, Brookfall. Mind if I sit with you for a bit?" It was always good to ask, to not blindly assume that he would be okay with it, but he'd never discouraged her before and she didn't think he would this time either.

Brookfall 34 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior It had been a while since he had last interacted with his nieces (the ones he knew of, at least), and who was he to deny his kin the pleasure of decent company? Though not quite as doting on them as Gorgeleap was (a major source of amusement for Brookfall, who had seen right through his brother's cynical, apathetic exterior to the vulnerable heart beneath), Brookfall still greeted them warmly when he had a moment to.
There was a vole clutched in Fernpaw's jaws when she'd come over, and Brookfall's white jaws spread in a smile. He did not ask to share, as he had already eaten. She was young. Leafbare was over, it was time for building one's strength back up. "Not at all. How has your training been? I trust Rushwhisker has been civil and informative?" The ex-deputy had not been himself for many moons, or so Brookfall had been told; ever since the civil war had torn this Clan apart and they'd patched themselves back together with cobwebs and gritted teeth, Rushwhisker's outlook on life had been similar to Gorgeleap's. Perhaps even more negative, as it was stemmed in resentment and disgrace.
Speak of the devil... An enormous shape hooked Brookfall's peripheral vision, and he thought he spied Gorgeleap returning to camp - his paws sodden and dark from crossing the camp's stream. He did not envy any cat that had gone on the dawn patrol; the waters were always coldest in the morning following a brisk night, and with a stream full of snowmelt to cross? He could feel the ache in his paws already. That kind of piercing cold could turn any pleasant cat grumpy.
Of course, this was Gorgeleap. He'd have to have been in a good mood to begin with for an icy stream to change anything. No doubt his brother regarded the stream as he regarded everything else; a chore.
Brookfall, who derived a few inklings of amusement out of drawing his littermate into various social situations, hailed him with a courteous sweeping tail. "Care to join us, Gorgeleap?" We all eat lies when our hearts are hungry. 345 Words || Taxx BlooRey DVD williams || Notes

dewpaw, Dewpaw couldn't remember being up this early in a couple days. With a yawn, she found herself mentally counting what herbs her and Swanfeather needed to take care of for the day. The season change as she was learning, brought growth back to the valley and the medicine cat's duty would be to ensure it all was growing right and being collected. She had spent a lot of the time the past week outside of camp, by herself or with Swanfeather, to collect and prune the herbs as needed. Her paws were gaining some thick calluses, and Dewpaw wondered if her sister had them too.
Turning her attention outward, the young she-cat caught the end of her sister's words as she walked from the medicine cat's den out to the prey pile. Her ears pricked with excitement when more voices filtered in. It wouldn't hurt to hang out with her family for a bit, right? She thought, chirping out a little hello as Brookfall called for Gorgeleap. "Can I join too?" Dewpaw asked.

Tear the whole world down, tear the whole world down WARRIOR OF RAINCLAN || 34 MOONS || TOM Long, dark fur pulled beneath the weight of water as the big tom plodded back into camp. One ear flicked in subdued annoyance as a persistent fly buzzed about his head. Pale green eyes were set to their default, half-lidded and considering the world around him with veiled disinterest. The dawn patrol had been as eventful as usual, and though he considered it a necessary and logical part of Clan life, he in no way enjoyed it. The unnaturally early start to the day was always a major obstacle, clashing with any normal chores he might have otherwise completed.
Instead of waking up around now and going to hunt before eating, and later joining a border patrol, Gorgeleap was on his way to go back to sleep. After he dried his coat, of course. Another obstacle in the way of a normal day. Soaking perfectly good bedding with a sodden coat made more work for no reason. Normally, his coat had plenty of time to dry after the last evening patrol. Now, he was just wasting more daylight hours. With a silent exhale, the large mottled brown tom stepped toward a patch of sun, only for his paw to pause midair as an all too familiar voice called to him.
A flat green stare dragged over the RainClan camp, settling on his paler-coated brother, before slowly shifting to the smaller shape at Brookfall's side. Before he could form an answer, Dewpaw's shape popped out of the medicine cat den. Fernpaw's sister chirped joyously, evidently excited at the prospect of spending time with family. Blinking apathetically at the medicine cat apprentice, Gorgeleap's shoulders shifted in another sigh. A long-furred (and still partially damp) tail swept around his frame, corralling Dewpaw in the process and guiding her forward.
"If I am adamant that I will only stay if you can too, they will have no choice but to accept." He told her flatly. "Be sure to grab yourself something to eat." The big tom added dismissively, slowing his pace slightly so Dewpaw could run to the fresh-kill pile and back before he made it to Brookfall and Fernpaw. Although his gaze remained as impassive as usual, he kept an eye on Dewpaw until she was safely back in front of him. With a slight dip of his muzzle, he motioned for her to continue, closing what little distance remained between the other uncle-niece pair.
"Brookfall. Fernpaw." He greeted them indifferently, collecting his paws beneath himself and dropping to a sit. His stare lingered on Brookfall, completely aware his brother found this amusing in some manner. There was no contest when comparing the two brothers' social skills, and Gorgeleap would be the first to admit Brookfall had and edge at starting and keeping up conversations. Figuring the quickest way out of this situation was to grant Brookfall the amusement he so desired, the big tom shifted his focus to the two younger cats. "Fernpaw, Dewpaw, how is your training coming along." He asked, though it more closely resembled more a statement than a true question.
Somewhere within the depths of his cynicism, he was vaguely interested in the answer. For, should he fail to intervene in a situation where either of the two young she-cats were unhappy, he knew with certainty their mother would shred him. And what a waste of time and energy that would be.

Fernpaw Apprentice of RainClan
Her question was met with acceptance, and Fernpaw settled at the tom’s side, tucking her paws to her chest as she tucked into the first bite of vole. Her answer to his question was delayed by the arrival of her sister and other uncle, a happy flick of her tail at the company. Gorgeleap also asked after the training of the two apprentices, and Fernpaw was only too happy to answer the questions.
“It’s going great. Rushwhisker and Ashflight are teaching me a lot, and he’s not so bad.” Considering what he’d been through, could anyone really blame him for being a bit short-tempered now and then? He’d never been anything but tolerant and helpful toward her, and he didn’t treat her like a wide-eyed kit who’d just taken her first steps from the nursery. Even when she had been just that.
He could be so much worse, with everything that had happened. “What about you, Dewpaw?” she asked, glancing toward her sister as she took a bite of the vole and spoke again, her voice slightly distorted around the mouthful. “What’s Swanfeather been teaching you?”

dewpaw, Swept along by a large, noticeably damp tail, Dewpaw grinned up at her uncle. Yes! Gorgeleap is going to come too! With quick steps, she grabbed her meal and hurried back, giving her sister a pleased nuzzle as she found her own space to settle down. Her joy was apparent and made her practically glow. The life of a medicine cat, as she learned, was definitely separate from the rest of the clan for their day to day routines. It was necessary she knew, but the young she-cat missed her family.
As Fernpaw spoke, she ate quickly but politely. “That sounds exciting Fernpaw,” She said through the last of the scales in her mouth, using a quick tongue to wipe them away. Now her turn, Dewpaw’s tail waved with excitement. “We’re going through all the herbs right now! There’s so many to memorize but they’re all important and- and Newleaf has made all this growth appear so we’ve been going out too an’ taking care of each plant to make sure Leafbare didn’t hurt them. Yesterday we found a new plant too by the river, under a nasty thorn bush.” She grimaced comically at the plant in her memory. They had managed to clear it with Swanfeather’s instructions but Dewpaw’s own paws still ached from all the tugging. “I think we’re going to go out again today to make sure we cleared everything, thorns are bad for new plants.”

Brookfall 34 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior Their maturity and easy-going personalities were as refreshing as cool water in greenleaf. Brookfall would not go as far as to say he disliked his apprentice, Pipitpaw. However, he would be lying (as he so often did), if he claimed to adore the younger tom's enthusiastic, stubborn need to challenge or question every little thing. Brookfall was early into his mentoring duties, yet already he felt the weight of their remaining moons piling up between his shoulders. Certain warrior ceremonies couldn't happen fast enough.
And yet, for the two she-cats chatting amicably near Gorgeleap, if they so happened to stay apprentices a little while longer, Brookfall would be the last to vocalize a complaint. Well, almost the last. Echoshade would likely enjoy their youth a bit more, even if they were no longer in the nursery snuggled at her belly.
Brookfall chuckled. "Ashflight too? Be sure to mind your manners, then. Her tongue isn't the only thing that is sharp." He and Rushwhisker's lost long sister had seldom interacted. However, she was still a staunch loyalist, and had made it crystal clear that she did not trust or like those who had stood on the side of the purists. His reasons for doing so had nothing to do with blood ties (he cared not an ounce for that sort of thing), and everything to do with a she-cat whose presence had been a dominant force in his life.
Until it wasn't.
"Well done, Fernpaw, Dewpaw. You're both learning quickly. Gorgeleap and I do not want to step on any toes, but if you would like to train or fish with one of us, we'd be more than happy to oblige." Striking yellow eyes found Gorgeleap's face, his brother wearing an expression of disinterest, bordering on statuesque-blankness. Yes, he had just volunteered 'Uncle Gorgeleap's' time and energy to their nieces. It was likely a hassle by Gorgeleap's standards (to be fair, everything short of breathing could be viewed as a hassle), but Brookfall was well aware his brother would not find a good way to say no.
He cared, despite being about as cuddly as a particularly hefty tree limb.

Fernpaw Apprentice of RainClan
Chewing on the fish as Dewpaw explained what Swanfeather had been teaching her, Fernpaw kept her eyes on her sister, giving her attention and filling her belly at the same time. She purred at Dewpaw’s excitement, glad to see that she was still greatly enjoying her apprenticeship under Swanfeather, and as she swallowed the bite she spoke. “It sounds like you’re keeping busy, and having fun. Careful of those thorns, though, they’re a real nuisance.” Speaking from experience, as she gave a lick to the forepaw that had already received one unwelcome meeting so far.
Glancing back at Brookfall, Fernpaw flicked her tail. “She’s not all that bad. She just doesn’t suffer fools, that’s all. She helped a lot when Rushwhisker was hurt. I learned how to catch birds when she trained me, and she helped with my battle training too. She’s smart. Maybe a bit pushy at times but I’ve learned loads from her.”
Tugging another mouthful from the fish, Fernpaw kept her blue eyes on Brookfall, beaming at his offer before flicking her eyes to Gorgeleap. “I’d love to! Can we, today? If Rushwhisker agrees- I can go ask him. I don’t know if he’s already made plans for today. Maybe you can come too?” Fernpaw added, turning to Dewpaw again, excited to spend time with her family, and hoping both Rushwhisker and Swanfeather would allow it- already forgetting that Dewpaw had mentioned plans for today.

Tear the whole world down, tear the whole world down WARRIOR OF RAINCLAN || 34 MOONS || TOM Gorgeleap regarded Brookfall with a particularly narrowed stare, although the impassiveness never left his gaze. It looked almost as though the large tabby had failed to hear what it was Brookfall had said upon volunteering them both for additional training. But Brookfall would know better; his paler coated brother would understand with that look alone that Gorgeleap knew what it was Brookfall was trying to achieve. RainClan's resident cynic only looked away from his brother when a younger and much more feminine voice piped up excitedly. Dull green eyes dragged to where Fernpaw was now excitedly rattling off about Brookfall's suggested training session.
The mottle tabby had yet to dry off from his last stint outside camp. Not to mention, he hadn't exactly had a proper sleep. He considered Fernpaw a moment, before glancing toward Dewpaw for any similar signs of excitement. Lastly, his flat stare returned to the charmer of the family. Was there really a point in attempting to avoid this? Even if he succeeded in ducking out, sleep would likely escape him. With his luck, Echoshade would catch wind that he'd disappointed her daughters. She'd hardly let him sleep then. Might make his coat into new bedding for the apprentices' nests though.
Wouldn't that be inconvenient. Flayed alive by a former queen. Probably better to just resign to his fate. "I have no other commitments for this afternoon. Assuming Brookfall is equally unencumbered, permission from both your mentors should suffice in confirming the launch of today's escapade." He never once dropped Brookfall's gaze as he spoke, his tone as disinterested as usual. Although he couldn't discern whether Brookfall had originally intended to toss him into the river and escape unscathed, the tabby tom essentially ensured that they were now both in this together.
Now that he'd potentially destroyed any free he might have had for the day, it was up to the two apprentices to take action and ask permission. The day was turning out to be even busier than he'd originally anticipated. Who needs sleep anyway. He deadpanned silently. ~360 Words || Taxx Fawn williams || XD He sounds like he's signed a death sentence
