Sootpaw dimly felt her mentor pulling her gently away from the threat. The fox was well handled, for now... what smelled like Smokestorm was attacking it and goading it. Valiantstride had already carried Beetlekit out of harm’s way, Sootpaw has vaguely felt him move her out of the way from her position of crouched protection. Cicadakit had already been taken away by Hawkfall (according to her mentor).
it was as if everything was happening in slow motion.
For a second, Sootpaw felt like she had closed her eyes to attempt to erase the sight of Beetlekit’s severed leg hanging from the maw of the fox. Then the illusion was ruined by something as simple as a blink. Her eyes were open. Her eyes had been open the entire time. She just... couldn’t see. All she saw was blood-tinged blackness. She blinked a few more times, desperate to see if it was just her eyes playing tricks, as they sometimes did when she was very tired.
Nope, still couldn’t see.
She swung her head round in wild panic. ”Petalrain I can’t see... I can’t see! Petalrain I can’t see!” The thrashing of her head continued, her entire body seizing up as the last of the adrenaline that had fuelled her desperate attempt at a rescue finally drained away. It felt as if her lungs were full of fire. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t cope, couldn’t see. struggling to breathe, She did something that she hadn’t done since she was a kit. She pressed her left against Petalrain’s, not caring who she was per-se, just needing to be close to somebody while she attempted to get herself back under control. She was trembling so hard her teeth were chattering, her head continued to thrash wildly... but at least her breathing was starting to slow.
”Is... Is Beetlekit going to be alright? I tried Petalrain I tried to save him but I failed I didn’t get there in time... I hope he doesn’t hate me for the rest of his life”
Still trembling, though not as vigorously, she fell silent, taking comfort from the touch of and the reassuring scent of her mentor, her head on her paws.
