into that bright world to I go Although the day was overcast, Fogsight did not let it trouble her. Her heart was focused too much on other matters making her feel heavy and a little unusual. Before tracking down her apprentice, the small warrior had given herself a large shake, and a quick grooming. It didn't completely remove the feelings but it helped bring back the focus she was known for. Now, with her apprentice next to her, Fogsight breathed in the forest air. It would be a good day for hunting she decided, glancing over at the tom. A sickness had kept him behind, something Fogsight was eager to fix. His skills would be there, especially for hunting. Even as an apprentice, he stood tall. It would be easy to run through the undergrowth or leap up to catch a bird trying to leave. "Tell me what you know of hunting, Aspenpaw." Fogsight broke the silence, gesturing with her tail for a low volume of voice. They didn't want to startle the prey away before they could catch anything. But she needed to quiz him, see if his mind was recovering from the many moons spent sick.

Aspenpaw I respect those who tell me the truth, no matter how hard it is. Aspenpaw's training while slowed was gradually starting to pick up. The black and white coated tom had expected Fogsight to push him a little harder and was ready for her call that morning. His sisters were all well on their ways to warriorhood and he hoped he wouldn't be too far behind.
Thankful his growth was starting to slow, Aspenpaw found it hard to walk when he was still learning his new height. Now nearly at his adult size, Aspenpaw felt more like a warrior every day.
Keeping pace with his mentor he paused when she did and listened to her words. Hunting came only slightly easier for him, his body built for it but his coat pattern made it a struggle. Black and white stuck about among the greens and browns of home. He was slowly becoming better suited for a fighting, but he didn't bother to mention it to Fogsight. Her question wasn't referring to it.
"I know that it is importnat to judge how far you are away from your prey. A hunt can be ruined by one missed jump," He replied softly, keeping his volume low. The scents of mice and small birds filled his nose but he kept his focus on Fogsight. Careful not to get distracted by the prospect of a good hunt.

into that bright world to I go "I know that it is important to judge how far you are away from your prey. A hunt can be ruined by one missed jump" Fogsight nodded, glad something was kept in his memories. Illness was a harsh reason to be delayed in training. Only Starclan knew when the cat could return to their duties, and for an apprentice at Aspenpaw's age, it was stunting. She turned her head enough to watch his reactions to being outside on such a busy day for the forest. His sense were absorbing it all, and she could practically taste his excitement on getting back to work. Fogsight would not let him fall behind, and with good days like this ahead of them, it would be hard to. The forest sung at them, the smell of so many creatures sinking deep in her belly. They would be successful today, even if it was a single piece of prey. Comfortable with the pauses, knowing her apprentice would soon remember how much his mentor thought about the world, Fogsight flicked her tail for Aspenpaw to follow once more. As they walked, she gave her instructions for their session today. "I would like you to catch me two different creatures. This will test your knowledge of different jump lengths and allow you test theories on what prey needs what type of leap. Do not be afraid of missing your target. There are no consequences for that." Letting her rather clipped words settle, Fogsight gave the tom a gentle smile. "I don't want you to tire yourself out before you get a chance to stretch your skills." Aspenpaw I respect those who tell me the truth, no matter how hard it is. The black and white tom's tail twitched. The prospect of hunting, even if it was meant to gauge his progress, was always something he looked forward to. Eager to start, Aspenpaw nearly missed his mentor's instructions. He needed to find two different prey animals, which wouldn't be an easy task.
Aspenpaw was better at hunting slower moving animals like voles or too fat birds. Needing to change up his 'style' between the two animals wasn't going to be easy but he wasn't going to shy away from the challenge.
Holding back for a moment longer, Aspenpaw waited to be sure Fogsight didn't have anything else to say. Once he was sure his mentor was finished, Aspenpaw headed away from her and into the undergrowth.
The first scent that caught his attention was that of a chipmunk. Getting into a crouch, Aspenpaw's firey amber eyes scanned the ground for the shape of the prey. Considering that leafbare was coming, Aspenpaw knew that most prey animals were gathering food for the cold moons.
Moving forward almost painfully slow, he spotted the golden brown creature. It was comical to watch the prey animal stuff its cheeks full of seeds, but Aspenpaw was too focused on hunting to smile. Adjusting his paws he leaped forward with his claws out before landing on the chipmunk. With a sharp bite to its neck, the prey was finished and quickly buried.
Turning his head to see if he could see Fogsight, Aspenpaw decided not to wait for her correction. Instead, he scented the air again and went looking for something else.

into that bright world to I go Her apprentice practically leapt away, his excitement crackling in the air. He was eager to prove his worth, and Fogsight knew he would succeed at doing so. She moved slowly after him, using her size to her advantage to keep her steps light among the undergrowth that wrapped the trees. As her senses told her, the forest was full of prey. She could hear the scuttling of something up ahead, smiling as Aspenpaw found it as well. Shifting into view, Fogsight watched as her apprentice correctly stalked and dispatched the chipmunk, the prey's catch of seeds spilling out as its jaws became slack in death. Noting Aspenpaw's look towards her, the warrior flicked her ears, a signal to keep going. She would wait to talk to him after both pieces were caught. There were things to fix of course, but nothing other than details that'll make his hunting more successful. Hellion | words: 167 | notes: short n sweet

Aspenpaw remained low to the ground, his black and white coat being a disadvantage but he tried not to focus on it. Instead he moved through the undergrowth, trying not to wince when sharp bamble rubbed his fur too much. He'd probably need a good solid grooming from his mother upon his return home.
At the last second, he had to sidestep around a fallen branch but it allowed him to notice a small mouse. The creature was doing something at the base of a tree, likely building a nest for leafbare.
Gathering himself up Aspenpaw didn't wait too long before jumping forward but something went wrong midleap. The mouse must have scented him and quickly bolted for the safety of the tree roots. Aspenpaw didn't have enough time to prepare and instead jumped right into the trunk of the tree. A pained yelp escaped him as he quickly scrambled away from the trunk. He had smashed his nose and muzzle into the tree, forcing his teeth against his tongue and blood to drip. Trying to blink away the pain, Aspenpaw felt stupid and foolish and prayed that Fogsight hadn't seen his failure.

into that bright world to I go Again her apprentice darted off, and Fogsight couldn't help but smile. He had recovered well, and already proved that he was returning to training as smoothly as a fish swan through the water. After neatly burying the first catch, Aspenpaw kept tracking. The warrior couldn't sense what he was after, but by his steps, something was there. She kept a safe distance away, noting as she traveled little bits of his fur stuck along the brambles of a particularly low tunnel through the undergrowth. An idea came to her at seeing it. His fur among the green and browns of the forest stood out, as did her own. But with his being more speckled, a certain advantage was there. We'll do birds next. Teach him to use the sun-like aspect of his fur to his advantage Fogsight thought, hearing a muffled thump as the tom leaped after his next catch.
Aspenpaw had vanished from view as he leaped, and she hmmed to herself when she saw no bit of prey under his paws and a particular expression of pain on his face. A misjump, she thought, consciously making her steps heavier as to not startle her apprentice before speaking. When her presence was assured, Fogsight asked, "What did you learn from this catch?" It wasn't a question about the negative aspect. He didn't catch it yes, but each failure was a chance to learn how to catch something else better. She didn't waste breath asking if he was okay. If he wasn't, it would show in his next answer and they would address the issue then.

Shame was added to his pain as his attention turned to Fogsight before his eyes fell to his paws. He had hoped his mentor didn't see it and would let him carry on without being notice to his mistake. But that wasn't the case. Instead she asked him about it which only served to make him feel worse but deciding to face her he did.
Aspenpaw flicked his tail and tried to stand up a little straighter, wondering if he looked bigger if it would be easier. "I didn't time my jump very well, I jumped too soon" He told her, ears twitching and heart beat slowing down.
"I messed up," He added his eyes shifting back down to look at the ground, the pain subsiding to a forgetable dull ache.
"I should've waited till I was closer and make sure I knew where the mouse was exactly," He explained further looking back at her with a mixture of frustration and guilt in his golden eyes. "I also missed a chance to feed a Clanmate so someone will be hungry tonight," He pointed out, adding even more guilt to himself in a minor downward spiral.

into that bright world to I go "I didn't time my jump very well, I jumped too soon. I messed up. I should've waited till I was closer and make sure I knew where the mouse was exactly. I also missed a chance to feed a Clanmate so someone will be hungry tonight." As Fogsight listened, a frown appeared on her face. Not out of disappointment in Aspenpaw's missed catch-every cat missed prey once and a while- but in his attitude towards himself. His sour self-esteem had built up when she hadn't noticed, and would be hard to fix. Yet she was going to. Flicking her tail to get his attention, Fogsight gave him a comforting look. "Yes Aspenpaw, you did miss it because of your jump. It was a risky jump that didn't pay off. However, that is not a reason to pull yourself down so low." She gestured with her muzzle back the way they came. "You have already caught something for the day and listen-" Fogsight flicked her dark colored ears, taking a pause for the pair to hear the forest. It was noisy still. His jump and resulting failure had not scared off the birds, nor the creatures scuttling across the undergrowth. There was more to catch the sounds said. "All cats miss prey. Even our senior warriors have missed prey in their recent moons. It is a game of luck we must play when we hunt." The small warrior turned her full attention back to her apprentice, spotting his stiff posture at trying to appear bigger. Does height help I wonder? She thought with a little amused laugh. "Come, you have done well today. Relax." Her tail flicked against his size with some weight behind it, aiming to knock that silly pose out of his system.

Aspenpaw caught the frown on his mentor's face and his ears tucked back further. Shame budding in his chest. Was she going to yell at him? Agree that he failed to provide for his Clan. Dread, joined the shame and filled up the young tom-cat. He considered his fate with a ditached saddness. What would happen to him?
However, what his mentor said to him was a surprise. She wasn't mean nor did she make fun of him for failing. In fact, she made a point to tell him it was okay. He tried to relax with her words but struggled. He messed up, just like how he messed up with his mother. At that internal realization for his own sour thoughts, Aspenpaw's eyes blinked the gears turning in his head.
But he didn't say anything about it. He kept it to himself and focused on heeding his mentor's words. Feeling her firm but gentle nudge to try and make him relax, Aspenpaw let his shoulders slack and head dip. It didn't take away his mood but it did settle him.
"Okay," He replied after a pause. He wanted home to sit in the apprentice den and push away the hurt that was the real root of his problem. This will scroll. 12 Moons TreeClan Tom Aspenpaw Honesty has a power very few people can handle
