Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Eighteen Moons
WORDS 390ish NOTES grumpy bored Coal |
Flicking his tail back and forth, Coalmask made his way toward the muddy pools. The tom was bored and that often left him feeling stuck. He hadn't done anything exciting in a few days, it almost seemed pointless to be a warrior. Granted he did like having his warrior name, he wasn't sure if he liked the freedom. It felt overwhelming, he could do anything he wanted without question. He couldn't get in trouble anymore by his mentor, not that it mattered before. His mother was doting as always, grooming his pelt and pointing out his flaws in the same brush of her tongue. It wasn't as bad as it sounded. She simply wanted him to be a good warrior, not to become sloppy like a lot of young warriors. "Stay in shape, don't become idle just because you are a warrior," She reminded him while he let her groom him. Coalmask only rolled his eyes when she wasn't looking, if she had caught him he'd likely be sporting a few nicks in his ears.
However, all those thoughts came to a halt as the soft grown alerted him to the muddy pools. Looking down Coalmask took a quarter-step back to give him enough space to flick the mud off his paw. It wasn't that he didn't like being dirty, he just avoided it. His fur was far too lush to permit being caked in mud for any amount of time. Thus he looked around for a log or something to jump onto.
Noticing one a tail-length away, the grey and black tom leaped for it. But it was happened to be covered in moss and didn't allow for him to get any sort of purchase. In fact, Coalmask dug is claws in deep only to slide further down the log until he slipped the rest of the way into the muddy water. Hissing at the cold, Coalmask tried to claw his way back up but kept slipping. Finally, he accepted his fate and allowed himself to sink the rest of the way into the water. Glaring at the log he splashed water toward it but realized it only served to further his muddy condition. "Stupid tree," He growled before finding his way through the water to the 'drier' ground.

There's this love that is burning, deep in my soul So much had changed in the recent days and it was all so much for Squirrelheart to get used to. The change of her name was the biggest thing for her; considering how long it had taken her to finish her Warrior training. It felt odd now that there wasn't -paw attached to her name. Not that she was disappointed, but it was just different. No more lessons or worrying about disappointing her Mentor. Starlingcry had finished her training and Squirrelheart would be forever grateful to the she-cat for her no-nonsense style of teaching it. She had learned a lot about herself these last few moons, and looking back on it now she realized just how much she'd changed.
Gone was the timid kit she'd been all those moons ago that had only wanted the approval of those around her. She wasn't the Apprentice that wanted to prove she was her own cat, nor the young she-cat lost in her sister's shadow. Now she was a Warrior and she stood calm and confident in herself and her abilities. She knew her strengths and her weaknesses, and she knew she could provide and protect her clan and those within it. Maybe she was still a bit shy sometimes, but it wasn't something that held her back any longer. It was a good feeling to know she'd come so far from how she was, and yet she'd kept the essence of who she was the same.
She still loved her clan and wanted the best for them. She still believed strongly in protecting the happiness of others and having things be fair was important to her. She was still the same passionate young she-cat that had gone before Dimstar to question his breeding regulations, and she was comfortable in who she was at long last. So it was a lot to get used to for one who had spend so long in the background desperate not to be seen or heard. Now she was free to come and go as she pleased and she took great joy in that freedom even as that same freedom kept her very busy. She was always going and doing something, content in her place within the clan.
Just now she was thinking about going hunting again for the frogs she loved so much. She'd gone out earlier in the dreary day to hunt for the clan and help to fill the prey pile, so now she was wanting to go for herself. With her task in mind she moved on quiet paws out into the territory to seek out her prey. She barely made any sound as she moved; not wanting to alert her prey to her presence before she could catch it. White tipped ears caught the sound of splashing nearby and she grinned to herself at the thought of catching frogs. She never expected to find a disgruntled tom swimming out of the Muddy Pools instead of the frogs she was expecting.
Dark amber eyes went wide with surprise before lighting with amusement because, for once, she wasn't the one in an embarrassing situation. She couldn't stop the small giggle that left her at the poor tom before she could stop it. Getting herself under control, she realized who the tom was and moved for the edge of the pools, carefully picking her way up onto a branch that wasn't wet and slippery. "Coalp-I mean Coalmask, sorry. Are you alright there? Need any help?"
She was also eternally grateful for her smaller frame making it easier for her not to end up just like the tom was. Not that she minded much in the least; considering what her favorite food was, but at the moment she'd rather be dry. Constantly yearning to get out of control

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Eighteen Moons
WORDS 220ish NOTES short! | Hearing his name, the grey tom's head shot up to see Squrrielheart balanced perfectly on a tree branch. He couldn't stop the narrowing of his amber eyes but he did try to relax. The last thing he needed was to be seen as a jerk in front of the only she-cat he considered a friend outside of his littermates.
Taking a moment to shake himself free of the water, he sighed heavily. "I'm fine, just the stupid tree," He replied flicking his damp tail toward the fallen tree he had slipped off of.
"I hate these stupid pools. Too much water and its all gross and now I'm going to wet all day because my fur is stupid and thick!" He ranted as he continued to shake his pelt. Only a little water at a time was being expelled but the motion was helpful in easing his frustration.
"Are you here for frogs?" He asked after a pretty violent shaking of his body, stray droplets going high enough to dampen the she-cat's paws.
"I thought I heard some but I probably screwed up and they all hopped away," He added with his head titled uptward to look at his fellow denmate.

There's this love that is burning, deep in my soul Amusement danced ever brighter in dark amber eyes the longer she stood there speaking to her disgruntled companion. She shouldn't find it so funny, but she really did. Coalmask was just such a stoic and serious tom most of the time so the sight of him looking so out of sorts was extremely amusing for her. She was glad he hadn't injured himself at least. She considered the branch he had been on quietly; knowing she'd fall in the water like him if she tried to jump onto the moss covered branch.
The feel of cold water against her paws made her aware of the water Coalmask was shaking out everywhere and she idly flicked her paws daintily in his general direction to shake the water he'd gotten on her off. She didn't mind it; especially if she wanted frogs, but it was the principle of the thing. After all, she was just as long-furred and fluffy as Coalmask was and would take just as long to dry out. "Sorry the pond is giving you so much trouble. It is the best place for frogs though; to answer your question about why I'm here. I hunted for the prey pile earlier so I thought it would be fine to catch a frog or two for myself. What about you, were you hunting?"
She climbed a bit further out on her perch and then went very still, ears tilted forward and tail out to balance herself as she listened for the tell-tale sounds of the prey she sought even while keeping her ears on the conversation at hand. She realized what this incident reminded her of and couldn't help the low snort of laughter that left her. "You know, this is similar to how we first met except back then I was the one in the mud. I seem to recall you didn't like me getting the mud on you back then, so this must really be uncomfortable for you. I usually have to go for a swim to get mud out of my fur before letting it dry in the sun. It takes forever since I'm such a fluffy cat, but I don't mind."
Coalmask was the opposite though, she believed. He really didn't like being dirty and seemed really annoyed at how long he knew it would take for him to get clean again. Such a strange tom he was. Constantly yearning to get out of control

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Eighteen Moons
WORDS count here NOTESweak i'm sorry. | Coalmask's ears flicked for a moment as he listened to Squirrelheart. It was nice to know he was right in assuming she was coming to hunt for frogs. While he didn't like the taste, he did like hunting them, they proved to be a bit more challenging than birds. Like his mother, Coalmask was talented with taking down avian prey. Thus he shifted his attention to learning to hunt frogs with better success. However, he hadn't thought about the nature of hunting near the pools where the frogs often lived.
In hindsight, Coalmask regretted the choice but considering he was already wet he might as well accept his fate.
Hearing Squirrelheart's question, Coalmask moved away slightly before jumping onto the perch. He was polite and didn't sit next to her but it was easier to talk to her instead of craning his neck upward.
"I was bored so I figured I'd come hunt something," He answered as he began the task of grooming the worst of his fur by shaking off the damp mud. As he heard Squirrelheart reflect on their first actual meeting he smiled to himself. 'Its funny how things can be so different but still very much the same,' He thought before turning to look at the she-cat little ways from him.
"I don't like swimming, I tried to learn but something about going into deeper water just makes my stomach twist up." Coalmask confessed as he did his best to scrap the worst of the mud on the branch he stood on.

Squirrelheart took note as Coalmask climbed up onto a dry perch of his own of where he was so she wouldn't unseat him on accident. Also she didn't want to get mud on herself unless she was doing it on purpose. Her head tilted to the side quizzically; amber eyes curious, as he spoke of hunting and realized with amusement that his current state was caused because he'd been bored. She shouldn't laugh at him, but it was a bit adorable. Her head tilted the opposite way as she learned that he really couldn't swim. That was curious, but she supposed most cats didn't really need to know how to swim in NightClan. She couldn't say she was the same though. "I love to swim, honestly. And since frogs are my favorite food, it helps to for me to know how." She chuckled lightly at herself; knowing that meant that unlike Coalmask, she actually preferred to get muddy. That thought in mind though, she could understand why he found it uncomfortable. Still...she turned her ears forward and went completely still and quiet. Amber eyes were focused and she didn't move a muscle as she listened for a long moment for the prey she was seeking. She took into account how high she was on her branch and the placement of the tom nearby so that she wouldn't catch him with mud if she decided to hunt. They were talking though, so she really shouldn't. Still, she was keeping an ear out. It had been quite a while since she'd been able to go hunting for frogs and she really wanted one. Surprisingly enough, she could still keep a conversation going while in stalking mode; it just made her light voice a tad softer than normal. Still, she didn't want to see rude. "I'm not the biggest fan of heights. You've seen me hunt from the trees, I'm capable of it, but passed a certain height I freeze up and it's hard for me to get down. We all have things that are hard for us, and there's nothing wrong with that." Which was true. -- Tags | Hellion

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Eighteen Moons
WORDS~400 NOTES idk why it got wordy sorry! | Hearing the Squirrelheart loved to swim was akin to her growing a second head. Staring at her, his eyes blowing wide Coalmask wasn't sure how to react. He hadn't really stumbled upon a Clanmate that would say the loved swimming. He heard of them tolorating it or knowing how, but loving was different.
Realizing he was staring at her awkwardly, he looked away and cleared his throat. He could almost hear his mother's voice chiding him for looking like a starry-eyed kit. He was a warrior now. Warriors should be serious and act like proper members of NightClan. As the embarrassment about his reaction started to fade away, Coalmask kept his eyes forward, not going out of his way to turn and look at her. It was more formal that way and left less room to make a fool of himself.
A bit of silence grew between them and Coalmask found himself missing the sound of her voice. When she talked it made things feel less boring. She had just interesting things to say but in an effort to act more mature he tried not to talk about stupid things. However, the more he fretted about not sounding stupid he noticed he couldn't think of anything to say. A mild form of panic set in, what if he was the boring one!
She started to talk again, this time about heights but Coalmask was able to note the change in her voice. He had a feeling she was waiting for sounds of frogs and for half a heartbeat, Coalmask considered excusing himself and leaving her to her hunt but he stayed. Watching her hunt would be less boring than going back to camp and suffering his mother's reprimand for getting filthy.
Hearing about her slight fear of certain heights, Coalmask thought back to the moment he saw her fall from the tree. A flood of protective emotions replaced the panic in his chest but he didn't utter a sound about it. Instead, he nodded along and waited for the right moment to add something to the conversation.
"My uncle Palefire fell from a tree once, he nearly died my mother was there when it happened. They were still apprentices and it messed up his leg really bad. He almost couldn't become a warrior," Coalmask explained, copying the same soft pattern of speaking that Squirrelheart had in order to be respectful of her frog hunt.
"I only climb trees if I have to or if I'm hunting birds. My mother actually didn't like me learning how to climb because of what happened to Palefire," He continued on but didn't further because of a few fox-lengths away there was a softly uttered ribbit. Whipping his head to look at Squirrelheart he waited to see if she heard it too.

Even though it seemed she wasn't paying attention to her companion, Squirrelheart did indeed notice the look of shock that filled Coalmask's expression upon his hearing that she honestly enjoyed swimming. Amusement lit dark amber eyes and she couldn't stop the little thrill that went through her knowing she'd surprised her stoic companion. She purred in gentle amusement at his shock and flicked her fluffy tail back and forth happily. He was such a peculiar cat, and she didn't understand what was so shocking about her enjoying swimming, but she left it alone. She flicked her ears at her companion as he spoke, nodding slightly to show she was listening. Then came a low sound that had her full attention diverted. Squirrelheart went completely still, amber eyes focused forward on the prey she could indeed see as well as she heard it. There was a patient quality to her stillness that said she could wait for hours if she had to. She shifted her stance one muscle at a time, not wanting to alert her prey and have it diving into the muddy water where she'd never find it again. She mentally began a countdown, holding her ready pose as she noticed her prey moving further out onto the muddy edges of the water. She dropped her tail slowly as she made it into her ready pose and just held her place once more. This was a distinct change to how she hunted anything else that crossed her path. Frogs were her favorite, so she put that much more attention into catching them. Still, it was a noticeable change to how she normally was. For long moments nothing happened and Squirrelheart held still, waiting. Then between one breath and the next she was moving in two quick strides off her branch and launching herself up and across the water before landing with as small a splash as she could. Like she had learned from Starlingcry, no sound came from her prey to alert others, and the disturbance she left in the water was minimal at best. When her head rose again as she turned to face Coalmask, a fat bullfrog was in her jaws and she was a muddy wet mess. Her dark amber eyes were full of triumph though as she practically pranced back from where she'd come. She jumped back onto the branch she'd started on, careful not to get any mud on her companion, and set the frog down once she'd settled. A bright, excited grin lit her expression, making her eyes dance in delight and the thrill she always got when hunting frogs. Her tone was bright when finally she spoke. "Well, that was fun. I hope I didn't get you dirty again." Even though she was an absolute mess, her pale golden fur matted with brown. She didn't seem to care though, she was happy. -- Tags | Hellion

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Eighteen Moons
WORDS ~390 NOTES song link
also, Coalmask just stepped in it big time. | She shifted and Coalmask watched her carefully. The fluid way her muscles moved as she made her way toward her hunt. Squirrelheart was an impressive huntress and Coalmask made a note to praise her. He knew his mother had a paw in her training but Coalmask had a strong feeling she was also pretty talented. There was only so much you could teach a cat and he doubted anyone would get as far as Squirrelheart if they lacked any base talent.
Curling his tail over his paws he ignored the mud still clinging to his tail in favor of studying her hunt. She lurched forward and went right for what Coalmask assumed was the location of a frog. Keeping any of his own movements subdued the black mask tom waited with baited breath for her return.
Once he saw her head pop up he started to relax. Her hunt had been successful. The frog in her jaw was well sized and could easily provide for herself and leave likely leftovers. Not that he would partake unless she offered, it was her hunt she deserved to eat her favorite meal in full.
Watching with an unmoving expression there was a flicker of praise in his pale eyes. A soft reflection of how happy he was that she made her catch. He kept his eyes on her until she was on her perch again. Thankful she was careful of the mud, Coalmask looked from her then back out. Realizing he had been staring and watching for far too long.
Hearing her words he smiled but didn't look at her but nodded along. He liked the sound of her tone, the lightness of it, how bright she was. "You know my father picked my mother as his mate because of her hunting abilities. He wanted his kits to be strong providers for the Clan and set an example for NightClan. It seems her skills have brushed off on you which is great! You will hopefully find a proper mate to balance out your skills. Perhaps your kits will be even better hunters then you!" He told her in his own attempt of praise. Turning to her with a small smile and friendly back and forth flick of his tail.

Squirrelheart blinked slowly at her companion as he began speaking once more after she'd settled herself back next to him with her prize. Her head quirked to one side and the contented purr that had started up stalled before ceasing altogether. Her expression said was uncertain about something and she put that something into words a moment later. "Um...thank you?" Her tone said she wasn't sure if his words were praise or not, but she decided she'd take them as such for the moment. Why would he mention his parents though? Amber eyes widened as she took in what his words meant. His parents, Dimstar was his father! She knew that, oft course, but it had never occurred to her before the significance of that fact. Coalmask was a result of ...an arranged mating like the breeding regulations she still wasn't sure she had ever believed in. It didn't change who he was to her, but it was a bit...worrying to her on some level. Instead of voicing her worry though, she focused on something else and offered another cautious reply. She did so respect the she-cat that had finished her training, after all. "Starlingcry really is a fine hunter, I learned a lot from her. She's also a skilled Warrior and I respect her. If she hadn't agreed to finish my training after Tinytail....well I'd still be stuck as an Apprentice. I owe her a lot. She's an amazing and talented she-cat and I hope to do her training justice through my actions." She didn't know what else to say about the matter, so she left it alone. What an odd way to compliment someone, if that was what Coalmask was indeed doing. -- Tags | Hellion

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Eighteen Moons
WORDS count here NOTES say something nice |
Coalmask was no fool and realized that he likely upset his fellow warrior with his comment. Unsure of how to amend things, Coalmask decided to simply turn away from her again. This time his attention fell to the murky water ahead of them. His tail continued to flick back and forth but at a slightly faster rate, a sign of his growing anxiety about their conversation. Squirrelheart was the only cat outside of his family unit he considered a friend. The thought of upsetting her made his heart beat faster and stomach threaten to twist into knots.
His words were intended to be a compliment but perhaps he wasn't clear enough and that was important to him. He wanted to be fully understood but he currently lacked something to make it clear. Perhaps Squirrelheart didn't share the same upbringing. Perhaps her parents were together because of mutual affection instead of the betterment of NightClan. Not that Coalmask found that bad, it just wasn't what he was used to. From an early age his parents were very clear that their affections weren't out of love but mutual respect. Coalmask could count on one paw the moments he saw his parents at all romantic. That total was zero. Dimstar was stoic and unattached looking at him and his siblings as a legacy, not as his kits. His mother had been a million times more affectionate but she had her own quirks about romance. Coalmask knew of his grandfather, Roughthroat, how his grandmother Gracaklefire had nearly died after the loss of him. Coalmask had a feeling his mother didn't want love out of fear, but he never dared to ask her. Instead, he kept the knowledge he gained from hearing passing conversations or listening to his own extended family to himself. No one paid much attention to him or even bothered to remember that Coalmask had an uncanny ability to remember most interactions with near perfection.
However, at the sound of Squirrelheart's voice, his mental tangent faded away. He focused again back on her and nodded in approval. He respected his mother as a son should and it was nice to hear a fellow clanmate show her the same courtesy. "I really admire her too. She taught me a few tricks as well and made sure I didn't get distracted by silly apprentice things like crushes. She reminded me to stay focused and work hard," He told her, trying to sound friendly like before but also remaining careful with his words. The last thing he needed was to annoy her further.

A prickle of distress filtered through Squirrelheart as she realized that Coalmask believed she was upset with him. Slowly she purred in reassure and gently tapped him with her tail - even if it was still damp - as she would with any friend of her's that was upset. She considered him quietly as he shifted the subject to his mother and she wondered why he seemed so sad. It wasn't in her nature to leave things like this, so she quietly clarified where Coalmask had not. "Coalmask...I'm not upset by what you said. I just wasn't sure it was a compliment at first, but I've decided to take it that way. It was just unexpected is all. So please...maybe....don't look so sad okay?" Her heart clenched painfully at the thought of whatever could have put that look in her friend's eyes. She hated how cautious his words were now, and it was her own fault too! Her ears tilted backwards against her skull in mild distress over their situation now. She wanted to comfort him, but wasn't sure how. Maybe... "I'm bad at things like this, I guess. Social things like this make me say and do stupid things, I'm sorry Coalmask that I'm such a mess. Your friend is a mouse-brained idiot sometimes so...I'm sorry." It was the first time she'd openly referred to herself as his friend and that did make her happy, but she still wanted the ease they'd had before. She wished she was better at social situations, or that she was brave enough to do something more than apologize. Why had she been cursed to be such a shy cat? -- Tags | Hellion

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Eighteen Moons
WORDS count here NOTES say something nice |
The touch of her tail was....nice. Coalmask could remember every moment of non-training related affection and realized it came mostly from his mother and stopped abruptly when he became an apprentice. The only time he felt contact from her was in the form of her correction a stance or making him hold still to groom his pelt. The latter being most of the time unpleasant simply because she often nagged him about something he did wrong or that she heard about him doing wrong. In fact, the time he lost against Darkpaw had him avoiding his mother like crowfood. He often times ducked out her line-of-sight when he caught the faintest whiff of her scent. It was easier to stay away from her than face the fact he had lost to a younger cat in a spar and likely hear about it for hours to come.
Comforted for a moment at her words, Coalmask attempted to give her a smile but still, his eyes lacked the sparkle. He remained careful even if he wasn't fully aware of it. "I'm sorry because it came out wrong and I should've known better," He replied again letting the forced smile fill his face. He was trying to look less sad for Squirrelheart's sake. He didn't want her upset either. Feeling a little more jumbled then before, Coalmask felt prickles along his neck and down his back. An uneasy feeling, torn between excusing himself to walk it off or staying with her and trying to talk it out. For a split second, he wondered which would be less stressful. The first would likely hurt his friendship with Squirrelheart and the second was almost guaranteed to do the same.
Flicking his tail at an even faster rate, he was thankful his tail wasn't covered in fresh mud otherwise he'd likely be spreading it everywhere.
Hearing her claim herself to be a mess had Coalmask quickly rising on the tree in a huff. "Your not a mess! You are great! I think you are really nice and a great huntress! Plus you don't mind that I'm weird! You are my on-best friend!" He told her, barely catching his slip in time. That last thing he needed was for her to know how truly lonely he felt sometimes. How every time she was around he felt a little more normal. When she was around Coalmask was able to be Coalmask instead of Coalmask, son of Dimstar. "And please don't call yourself mouse-brained. I think you are the smartest she-cat in NightClan. " He meowed softly dropping his gaze a bit as the prickles returned this time going up to heat his face. A sensation he wasn't sure he hated or if it was easier just to tolerate it.

Squirrelheart realized her mistake too late and shook herself; tail flicking around a bit. She took a deep breath before letting it out; trying to calm herself. She'd always been too emotional for her own good. She felt her pelt heat up with shame at how hard Coalmask was pretending just for her. She shouldn't have made him feel like he had to. Amber eyes widened in surprise at his outburst to her negative words about herself, and she caught his sudden change in words. Was she...his only friend? That was so sad, he must be so lonely all the time. Emotions flitted through her expressive eyes in a wave before she settled on determination. She didn't call him out on anything this time, instead deciding to just accept and be honest. "It's alright really. And I...you shouldn't feel that you have to be anyone other than yourself. I don't like that you're sad, but you don't need to pretend to be happy if you aren't. It's what friends are for; worrying about each other. If you're sad, be sad, but know that I'm here if you need me. That's all I meant."She flushed again from both the praise and vehement denial that she was anything other than brilliant from her companion. "Thank you for that, by the way. Except for my mother and sister...I don't think anyone has ever told me I was anything other than a means to an end. You're...a good friend Coalmask and...you're my best friend too." Her tone was shy but genuine, and it made Squirrelheart relax to be able to simply be herself for once instead of what everyone thought she should be. She then decided truth was good and offered him her own opinion on him in her soft tones. "I don't think you're weird at all Coalmask. I think you are an amazing hunter and you're so confident and you always seem to know what you want out of life. I...really admire that about you." Which was the truth, but she still sort of felt like she was sharing some sort of personal secret. Darn her lack of social skills. Instead of lingering on it, she offered Coalmask an opening to change the subject if he wanted. "Did you know...when Dimstar passed the breeding regulations...I was the first to approach him to speak to him about them? He was really surprised an Apprentice had come to him first instead of one of his Warriors."-- Tags | Hellion

Coalmask! NightClan Warriors Eighteen Moons
WORDS ~520 NOTES say something nice |
As a sign of respect he felt she deserved Coalmask looked up to reconnect with Squirrelheart's gaze and quickly realized how expressive her eyes were. He felt captivated for a moment. Dazzled by how everything seemed to swirl around them. He felt foolish for a brief moment for not noticing it before. Were they always like that? Perplexed for a moment he had to remind mentally remind himself to listen to what she was saying. Focusing his attention on her mouth he found it easier to hear her words. The concern in her words was comforting and Coalmask actually had a true smile tilt the corner of his mouth. It was tiny but it was something.
"I'm not exactly sad, I'm just sorry for being rude and being unclear, plus I don't want to upset you," He told her choosing his words carefully, this time not out of fear but as a desire to be heard correctly. He didn't want a mistake like that again.
Her praise about him being a good friend washed over him like a ray of warm sunshine on a cold morning. Refreshing and energizing. He basked in her words for a moment, the tiny smile growing a little bigger and almost becoming a full grin when she said he was her best friend. He never thought she'd consider him a best friend and hearing her say it was enough to push away a bit of that lonely feeling that was deeply rooted in his core.
As she kept going about how she thought he knew what he wanted, he felt an awkward laugh coming on but stopped. If only she knew just how unsure he felt. The whole reason he was outside and slightly damp with mud was that he was bored. He had nothing to do, he made it over the biggest hurdle in his life, warriorhood. He wasn't sure where to go but still, he held on to the fact she admired him. It gave him a hint, a clue to where he could go. Maybe he could motivate others to be a cat to admire. Not in the way his mother was admired or how his father was remembered. He wanted something different but he wasn't sure what to call it, but he didn't get a chance to dwell.
Instead, his father was brought up and Coalmask internally stumbled. The breeding regulations were now an unspoken ordinance in the Clan. When his father died they weren't actively enforced anymore but they still hung over the Clan. A new expectation, one he wasn't entirely against.
"Really? I don't really see the harm in them. I mean NightClan needs strong warriors. So why not make sure only the strongest warriors reproduce. I'm technically a product of that and I like you said I'm an amazing hunter. I think maybe Dimstar was on the right track," Coalmask told her with his careful wording. He watched her and was prepared to read her expression. Searching her face for any sort of reaction.
