Nightfall looked around him. The pitch-black woods were somehow calming, and his gentle walk was proving to go nicely. He liked having a little time to himself; it was nice to relax from his deputy responsibilities sometimes. His green orbs glazed the woods, and his ears were delicatly moving to hear any movements.
He sighed, and sat down. No prey was wanting to come out this quiet morning. He pursed his lips, and sat, still waiting for prey to scuttle, or flutter somewhere.
It was quiet a couple of moments, and finally to Nightfalls' releif he heard the gentle prancing of a mouse. He detected it from his right, and he slowly turned. There, was the biggest mouse he had ever seen in his life. His mouth watered at the sight. He crouched, and stalked forward lithely. When he was it distance, he leaped, jumping on the mouse and grabbed his neck until he satifactily heard the breaking of it's larger bones.

The dark woods were the perfect camouflage for the black apprentice as he crept slowly and silently through the undergrowth in search of prey. He had been bored in camp after seeing his ‘meek’ sister Lunarpaw leaving camp with the Medicine cat Mistheart. He had a loathing of medicine cats as he saw them as being weak; Mistheart was the perfect example of that as she refused to fight at all. The job was perfectly suited to his sister as well.
As Darkpaw picked up the scent of a sparrow nearby he instinctively stopped and began to search the branches in the trees. When he spotted it with he piecing amber gaze he smirked, easy! he launched at the branch, grasping the small bird in his paws with apparent ease as he twisted around to land on his feet again. The bird flapped in his grip but he finished it off quickly with a bite to the neck. As he lifted his head again he caught the scent of the deputy, Nightfall. I wonder if he saw that! he thought as he spotted him through some trees, I doubt it, it’s too dark! He loved being an ‘excellent’ apprentice in front of the powerful cats in the forest, according to him he was destined to join them.
He carried his catch through the trees to stand in front of Nightfall. ’Hello,’ he mewed simply after dropping his sparrow. His head and shoulders held high as he showed off his large size, there was no denying he was well muscled for his age.

Nightfall nodded. "Hello, Darkpaw." he said. He had seen the catch, so he said, "You need to hold your footing a little more. You were just at the right time, because the sparrow almost saw you." he said. "Just remember that and it will be better." He was just one of those cats. He was slightly impressed, honestly, but a slight problem in the footwork really bugged him. "Who is your mentor?" he asked. It just slipped his mind momentarily.
The apprentice was rather large, not too far from Nightfall, but Nightfall was completely stocked with muscle. Then he scowled. "You need to stop showing off, just so you know. It is getting a little agrivating, not to mention annoying." he said strait-forwardly.
((OOC: Sorry if he sounds mean, but that is really just how he is.))

The black apprentice listened to Nightfalls words hoping he would get some sort of praise for the catch he had just made. As he told him he had been close to losing his sparrow he found it hard to hide his anger. ’Ok, thanks for the tip!’ he mewed trying to seem calm, he wasn’t thankful at all but he respected the deputy. ’My mentor is Hawkeye,’ he mewed standing tall again, his amber gaze shining brightly.
Darkpaw did not like what the deputy was saying to him, no cat had ever told him to stop showing off, none of the apprentices dared to, and his brother just did the same as he did. ’I don’t show off!’ he growled trying to stay calm but not succeeding very well. He was clearly lying as his black tail flicked irritably while he looked around avoiding the deputy’s gaze.

Nightfall smiled. "My pleasure." for some strange reason he was enjoying this. This apprentice, he could tell, was clearly having a hard time facing the facts. When the apprentice tried not to snap back, he almost burst into a hysteria of laughter.
"Are you kidding? You puff out your chest like you are king of the world. I know you are larger than the others, but showing off really doesn't mean you are better." his amusement diminished as soon as he watched the apprentice.

Darkpaw smirked at the ground, he was not the sort of cat that liked being laughed and he could tell that the deputy was trying not to do just that. Theres nothing even funny!! he thought angrily to himself, I thought the other warriors were supposed to be supportive! he could feel a rumble in his throat as he tried not to growl. He was fast losing respect for one of the warriors he admired most.
Yes it does! he said to himself not wanting to say it out loud as it would prove Nightfall’s point exactly. ’I don’t show off!!’ he grumbled once again, he was clearly in denial but he didn’t care, he was better than the others, Nightfall was just jealous. He spotted a mouse by the trunk of a tree and slowly made his way towards it, his body flat to the floor and his movements smooth. When he was in pouncing distance of the mouse he pounced and killed the mouse with a quick swipe of his sharp claws and began to bring it back to where his sparrow lay.

Nightfall smiled. Now, that was much better. You held yourself better. Your hunting skills are good." he said. He really meant it, too. You could tell, and getting his compliments meant a lot. Then he shook his head.
"I know you think you don't, but you do. You don't have to show off, you know. If you be yourself it would be much better." he smiled slightly, deciding to be a little more gentle. "You might understand some day. It would be better if it was now, but that doesn't matter. But cats are who they are, not what they pretend to be."
((OOC: WOW. that was a good little-speech!))

Darkpaw stood tall and proud as the deputy now complimented his hunting skills, I just did the same as before, he thought to himself not knowing what he had done different or apparently that there were different techniques.
The black apprentice shrugged, he was not changing himself for anyone, not even the deputy of his own clan who he was loyal to. It was who he was and what he did so nothing could stop him. He felt the need to show the other apprentices he was better than them and would make a good leader. ’I know, I’m not pretending to be anyone else, I’m being who I am!’ he mewed a little calmer as Nightfall was more gentle.

Nightfall laughed, not something he always did. Everytime he tried to say something he ended up laughing. Finally, he had some self control, and he took a deep breath. "Well then, you really are a little rascal after all!" he yelped, then again burst into a hysteria. He shook his head after a while. "I'm telling you, things get weirder and weirder as I get older. As everything gets older."
He didn't like the way that sounded. It made him feel old. 'Back then', man did he hate the phrase, you would get seriously scolded if you showed off. He shook his head again. Time passes so quickly. And pain overtook him.
Bobbing head....
Lifeless body....
His stomach churned and knotted. He gulped, and dug his claws in the hard earth ground. They sank in easily, and it was cold under where he sat. His breathing was just a little unsteady, but it was hard to notice, thank Starclan.[/font]

The black apprentice did not see anything that was funny at all, he lifted his tail high and padded a small distance away to site under a tree, it was starting to lighten up slightly now as the sun began to rise. Faint shadows could be seen around them now. ’Things change all the time!’ he finally grumbled at the deputy lifting a black paw and licking it clean of the dirt that had stuck to him.
He glanced at Nightfall in time to see that he had tightened his grip on the ground around him. Is he angry? he asked curiously, it wouldn’t surprise him too much, the deputy never really was the friendliest of cats. But looking closer and squinting his amber eyes he could see Nightfall looked more troubled than angry. ’Are you alright?’ he asked casually padding back over to him.

Nightfall gulped. His head was churning. He shook his head to clear it. "No." he gasped. He was trying to channel his breathing. Then he looked at the apprentice. "It's...nothing." he had never told anyone the whole story of his past. He knew he couldn't. Ever. His beloved brother was...dead because of him. How was he going to live with himself? He was here, second in command of his clan. He was still there, when he should be the one dead. Duskkit should be the one here in his place. The deputy.
Not a murder like him.
"It should have been me, Darkpaw. It shouldn't have been him." Nightfall said, his heart splitting and shreding as it did that night. He suddenly looked at his thigh, and saw a huge scar. "That was all I got...and he got so much worse..." he whispered, hardly able to hear it himself.

Darkpaw looked around, confused, he did not know what was wrong, but he knew that the deputy was lyeing when he said nothing. He was not blind, he could see the upset he was going through, but he did not know where it had come from all of a sudden. Him being a show off?
Once again the black apprentice had no idea what he was talking about. ’What should have been you?’ he asked quietly, probably the quietest he had ever ever been. Being only an apprentice Darkpaw did not know anything about the deputies past, only that he had lost a sibling to a fox, but he did not know the whole story. Could this be what he meant, it seemed a little strange, it surely couldn’t have been his fault.
[[OOC-Aww I see! That’s so sad! And sorry it’s a bit short I have no muse…]]

Nightfall looked at him. His green orbs tortured. "Darkpaw..." he whispered. Then the same tortured orbs turned to anger. Not at Darkpaw, but to himself. It pulsed through his body, taking over all of it. "I should be dead!!" he cried, loud enough for a lot to hear. Not the camp, but this apprentice sure could hear it.
Nightfall fell to his paws, gulping air. "Duskkit should be alive. He should be here..." he whispered. "Now...he's gone and it's all my fault!" This peaceful walk had turned it's course to the worst. His mind had wandered, and it had chosen the past to think about. Where his brother had died...his best friend. "I'm a murderer." he whispered, hardly audiable. He could barely hear it himself...and he looked at the apprentice before him, his eyes sad. Would the apprentice run? Fight him? Would he himself just sit there and let him?
He wanted to die. He wanted to. His brother was dead because of him...drowned...

Darkpaw looked on at the deputy, confused. ’Why should you be dead?’ he asked hoping he was not being too forward. ’It can’t be your fault he is dead,’ he protested, ’Starclan decide the fate of all of us!’ he mewed. Nightfall as th deputy of Nightclan should know that.
As Nightfall fell to his paws Darkpaw stared at him and rolled his eyes a little impatiently. ’Why was it your fault!?’ he mewed, he was getting frustrated that the deputy was going on about something he did not know, he couldn’t place the blame on anyone or comfort him at all if he didn’t know the whole story.
The black apprentice took a step back at his last words, a murderer he did not know what to think but eyes him suspiciously. ’Did you kill him with your own claws then?’ he mewed apparently a little scared for his own ‘precious’ life. He was finding it hard to believe that the deputy could kill a cat, if he had he would have surely been sent away from the camp and definitely not made deputy.

Nightfall gulped. "I was the one who told him to come. We went to the river...and the fox was there. He had followed us." he grimaced, and heaved in a breath of air. It didn't work. The feeling of guilt and fault consumed his frame, his heart.
"He was my brother, Darkpaw. He was my best friend. And I led him to his death. I practically put him in the paws of that fox." he looked down, unable to contain his emotions as they tortured him. "The fox...," he gulped down a lump that had risen to his throat. "it grabbed him...and flung him to the river. He drowned. And I was there! I watched him die, his head bob on the water's surface...it never came up. And it's all my fault, Darkpaw."
His confession hurt. It stabbed him deep in his chest...his lungs were like paper, so thin he couldn't breath. He gulped once, and a second. He couldn't hold it in his decomposing chest. "What have I done?" he said in a voice barely loud enough to hear. But he was sure Darkpaw did. He finally looked up at the apprentice, and really looked at the face of the young cat. He couldn't read it. Would Darkpaw hate him? Think he was horrible?
