Dawnblossom For the last few days of her pregnancy, Skunkspots had stayed in the medicine cat's den - paranoia and anxiety obviously close littermates to the new queen. Dawnblossom was patient and kind, remembering fondly her own kits and that familiar sensation of nervousness and excitement that every new mother went through. When not sorting herbs or teaching Sandpaw, Dawnblossom found herself trying to reassure the black and white she-cat, that everything was as it should be.
Yes, the kits were a few days late, but that was not going to be life threatening.
"She-cats have been delivering kits for moons upon moons upon moons, you'll be just fine Skunkspots. Think of Valiantstride, and how delighted he will be when he sees them." Dawnblossom rasped her tongue over her patient's dark ears, but stopped as she saw her fidget, first with restlessness and then with a shudder.
"Ow! I think something's wrong--oh StarClan--OW!"
Dawnblossom suppressed a smile, and refrained from shaking her head. "Sandpaw, she's begun kitting. After you fetch her some soaked moss, I want you to pick out a strengthening herb for our newest queen." Skunkspots already looked like she was on the verge of panic as another shiver raked down her belly.
"Nobody told me it would hurt this much!" Skunkspots groaned, scratching the stone floor beneath her bedding.
"Skunkspots, you are a warrior of StoneClan. Pain is temporary, motherhood is eternal. Your mother's watching over you right now. Take a deep breath and listen to me and Sandpaw." To Dawnblossom's satisfaction, Skunkspots fell silent, and she watched uncertainty pass over the she-cat's face - and then, slow, cautious as a vole first out of it's den, resolve began to show through.

Sandpaw was calm and quiet as he moved confidently around the Medicine Cat's Den. He knew what to do and smiled gently down at Skunkspots; knowing she was scared and in pain. After getting more of the soaked moss as he'd been instructed; he chewed up some ragwort and mixed it with juniper berries before offering it to the new queen. "Here take this, it will help. Just keep breathing, you're doing wonderfully. And soon your kits will be here to greet the world. Everything is going to be fine, you'll see." He knew she was going to take one look at her new kits and love them unconditionally; just as his mother loved he and his siblings. He couldn't wait to see the look in the face of both the new parents once their kits arrived into the world to add to StoneClan's growing ranks. The young queen had been practically beside herself the last few days as her time drew near and Sandpaw had done as much as he could to keep her calm. Keeping her mind off of things wasn't easy, but he'd done his best. Now he was watching new life be born and he wanted nothing more than to stand back and watch with wide-eyed fascination. He couldn't though; it was his duty and privilege as an Apprentice Medicine Cat to assist his clan-mate in this trying time. He'd be excited about it later when he could talk privately to Dawnblossom. -- Fate of Five Staff

Dawnblossom Skunkspots looked skeptically at the herbs, as if she were going to voice a complaint about being unable to swallow them. However, another shiver of pain down the laboring queen's flank and Sandpaw's nest-side manner was enough to convince her otherwise. Dawnblossom purred gently in approval. It wouldn't be long now before Sandpaw became a fully fledged medicine cat.
However, they had a task ahead of them first, and Dawnblossom shook her thoughts free of ruminations of the future. Returning to the moment, Dawnblossom spoke encouragement to Skunkspots when the queen's breathing hitched, and coached her through regaining her breath - remembering her own kitting.
Skunkspots squirmed, crying out through gritted teeth as the first of a new litter was brought into the world. Dawnblossom quickly rasped her tongue over the wet bundle of fur, coaxing him into taking his first breath of life as a StoneClan kit. "Bring him to his mother's belly so he can nurse," Dawnblossom instructed gently, her attention going back to the queen as the contractions started again. "There appears to be one more on the way. You're doing wonderfully, Skunkspots. You know when to push."

[smear:f3e471]Fallenleaf [/smear:f8c56a] ~~~~~~~~~
She'd been out on a walk earlier that morning, accompanied by one of the senior warriors assigned to her by Hawkstar. She relished the chance to get out of camp every now and again, especially considering Leafbare was creeping closer. Cold weather brought with it trials Fallenleaf could live a perfectly happy life without; her damaged shoulder stiffened considerably as the chill crept into it. The thought of the future brought with it another train of thought. Although Hailstrike was a perfectly capable warrior, the she-cat wasn't exactly the Clan's most well-known conversationalist.Fallenleaf missed the company of her last apprentice, but Skunkspots was building a life of her own now.
A swell of pride bubbled in her chest. Seeing the joy Valiantstride brought to Skunkspots was uplifting, but she'd be lying if said she wasn't a little bit jealous. What a silly emotion. She thought to herself with a smile. Unable to help the flick of amusement in her tail as the pair closed back in on StoneClan's camp, the elder glanced toward Hailstrike. Her jaws opened to thank the senior warrior for taking time out of her day to accompany Fallenleaf when a muffled cry erupted from the medicine cat's den.
Pale ears snapped up, and the elder stumbled forward, nearly tripping when she momentarily forgot about her incapacitated state, despite having lived with it for many moons. Regaining her step with only a strangle gasp, Fallenleaf limped toward the medicine cat's den more noticeably than usual. This time, she didn't care who saw, she had a place to be. Briefly wondering where in the name of StarClan Valiantstride was when his mate was clearly kitting, Fallenleaf pushed into the dim lighting of the den, leaving Hailstrike in her wake somewhere. Gaze flashing to Dawnblossom, almost as though challenging the medicine cat to even try to get her to leave, Fallenleaf closed the distance between herself and Skunkspots with a lurching gait.
"My, my, my." She rasped affectionately, slipping into the nest to press herself against Skunkspots comfortingly. "I was worried I'd miss the whole endeavor. Couldn't have held out until after my morning walk, hm?" She teased, her tongue lapping over Skunkspots' ear before she looked toward the small bundle of fur being pushed to the queen's belly. With a rumbling purr, Fallenleaf listened as the kit mewled its first protest. "What a set of lungs on that one." She commented, touching her nose to Skunkspot's shoulder. "Absolutely perfect, too."
Able to see the pain and worry rippling through Skunkspots, the elder continued in a gentle voice, hoping the familiarity of it would ease Skunkspots somewhat. "Breathe with me now, alright? You're doing great." When she inhaled, the noise was exaggerated, to ensure Skunkspots could hear and follow it. She may have never had kits of her own, but Fallenleaf had seen her fair share of kittings, so she knew a thing or two. |

StoneClan || Warrior || Tom
"Valianstride! Skunkspots is in labor!" Came the yowl of Petalrain as she ran toward the golden blotched tabby. The tom's head turned sharply at the words coming from Petalrain. It took him a moment to regiester what she said before he dropped his newly hunted prey. The tom expected Petalrain to pick up his catch as the father-to-be bolted for camp. Having went hunting to quell his nerves, he set a record with how fast he returned to camp.
Crashing forward through the entrance, he attempted to catch is breath before honing in onto the medicine cat's den. He knew Skunkspots had been resting there since the kits were late. Doing his best to appear calm, Valiantstride headed for the den and headed inside without an invitation. Glad to see Fallenleaf supporting his mate, Valiantstride felt his stomach coil. The sight of his mate in pain made his skin crawl. He worked hard to keep her happy and void of pain but now he wasn't much help.
Moving slowly and carefully to come closer to his mate, the tom pressed his nose to her cheek. "I'm sorry for being late, I was hunting." He purred softly into her ear, his eyes falling to the kit at his mate's belly. A strong surge of pride warmed his chest, the pride mostly for his mate. She had done so well without him. "I love you Skunkspots,"He purred into her ear before licking her cheek waiting for the other kit.

White-tipped ears tilted at the sound of others entering but he didn't let it draw his focus from the one who really needed it. Sandpaw began to purr soothingly to the new queen and tried not to look wide-eyed at the sight of a new life being born. He managed it, but just barely. To occupy himself he focused on the task at hand, licking the new kit until he saw it breathing well on its own and moving it where it could then nurse. He made sure the kit latched on to eat before shifting and offering soothing and soft words to those gathered as well as to Skunkspots. "You're doing great, just keep breathing. You're almost there, and the first kit is just perfect." He shifted to let Fallenleaf curl up next to the laboring queen and turned his expression to the entrance when Valiantstride finally arrived. He purred gently to the clearly distressed Warrior in an effort to sooth him and made a mental note to have some goatweed present in the Medicine Den at all times for situations such as these. It wouldn't do, after all, to lose the father of a kitting queen to his stress and nerves. He'd mention it to Dawnblossom later, as he had other things on his mind now; like keeping everything nice and calm for Skunkspots. So he offered a reassuring word to the worried tom. "You're here with her now, and that's all that matters. She's doing great, and having those that love her nearby can only help her more." She smiled gently to the two cats that had come to the kitting; knowing tensions were high, but the new queen was more important. Yes, definitely he was going to get goatweed for the den. It would be useful for this exact situation in the future. -- Tags | Fate of Five Staff Fawn Hellion BlooRey DVD

Relief flushed through the she-cat's face at Fallenleaf's arrival. This was difficult, and the uncertainty of never having done anything like this before was weighing heavily on Skunkspots' mind. But she dug her claws in - metaphorically - and tried to focus on the sound of her mentor's voice. Eyes squeezed almost entirely shut, the black and white queen flicked an ear at the exaggerated breathing, and tried to follow along.
Surprisingly (she'd half expected herself to pass out from all this), it was helping.
Where is that stupid furball? Skunkspots mentally hissed through another painful spasm. Where was Valiantstride? She craned her neck towards the den entrance, and her heart skipped a beat as the tom rushed in as if StormClan were on his heels. He muttered something about hunting, but the only words that got through to her were the only ones that really mattered.
"I love you Skunkspots."
"I--"
Skunkspots pushed, bringing the second kit into the world, her thoughts becoming scattered as leaves in an autumn breeze. She couldn't think, only feel, and what she was feeling was exhaustion, and a dull, throbbing pain all over. Skunkspots was briefly aware of Dawnblossom passing a squirming, wet ball of fur to Sandpaw, but it wasn't until the healer confirmed it was the last kit that she slumped against Fallenleaf and Valiantstride with relief.
Thank StarClan that's over.
Yellow-green eyes found the two bundles pressed to her belly, and she couldn't take her eyes off of them. They had been ... something to talk about before now. But here they were, safely delivered, normal and healthy looking. It was as much as any queen could ask for, but Skunkspots found herself unable to relax immediately. What if we're not good parents? What if they don't like me?
Skunkspots glanced to her mentor and her mate for reassurance, as if they could read her thoughts.
"Well done, Skunkspots," mewed Dawnblossom to the uncertain queen. "Two beautiful kits. You must be so proud, both of you." The tortoiseshell healer addressed her apprentice. "Please fetch her some more soaked moss, she's going to need to rest for a while now."

Sandpaw felt like his eyes would fall out of his head if they got any bigger but he really couldn't help it. This entire thing was very exciting; though he hid it well as he moved to get some wet moss so Skunkspots would have some water to drink. The newest queen had done well and her two kits were beautiful. He felt pride for his clan-mate swell up inside him and a low purr left him in response. He was also proud of himself for not messing up and for trusting in himself and the things he had learned. He had known exactly what to do and that was a great relief to him. He could see the apprehension in Skunkspot's expression but didn't comment on it; knowing her mate or Mentor one would notice and likely help to settle her. As for him, he felt she would be a great queen and her kits would make wonderful additions to StoneClan. -- OOC: Short but sweet. Finished? Fawn Hellion BlooRey DVD
