Padding wearily up to a sheltered cave, Maverick was absolutely relieved that he had found this place. There was a strange scent around, one he couldn't place, but he didn't care, he was too tired. He had been wandering around the mountains for a while, but hadn't found a suitable new resting place yet. This place seemed great, the entrance to the cave was partly hidden by scraggly mountain scrub, but Maverick had keen sight and had spotted it a while ago.
Padding up to the entrance, he snuffled around, his pelt prickling, the strange scent was very, very fresh. From inside the cave came a deep growling and his hackles raised in alarm. He back up slowly, but nothing followed him out. Sitting and combing his tongue over his fur to get his bearings, he stood and crept forward cautiously. At the entrance, his ears pricked and he remained there, low and alert, waiting.
When nothing happened, he scooted forward in the slightest, scenting once more, trying to figure out what it was that was occupying the cave. The scent was faintly feline, but also... there was a very strong smell of death and alarms of danger went off inside his head like angry bees, but he pushed it away. If it was only a cat, what was there to worry about? Listening for a moment longer, he realized that the heavy growling was actually something of a snore, and that whoever this cat was, he was sleeping.
"Hello? Sorry to wake you, but do you mind at all if I share your cave for a night? I'm a bit tired and have no where else to go," he called softly, hoping not to startle the cat or make him think he was a threat. The low growling stopped immediately and he heard heavy pawsteps echoing up from the depths of the cave. Backing up so that the current occupant of the cave could get through, he waited, but what came out was no cat, or at least was much bigger than any cat he had ever imagined.... All his fur stood on end as fear coursed through him, but he could find no words.
Demon looked down at the cat, lithe and supple, he looked like a tasty little morsel. Suddenly the lynx began to laugh as the cat's fur fluffed up in fear, his fear scent was so strong it almost overpowered him, "Wassa matta litta cub, did I fright'n yo?" he laughed once more, his muscles tensing almost imperceptibly as he prepared to take this pitiful excuse for a cat down and tear into his flesh.
Maverick took a single step back as the huge cat began speaking, his language very similar to a cat's, but with a strange sort of accent. maverick's eyes were so wide it seemed they were about to pop out if head. He took one more step back as it laughed again, and though most cats' fear would blind them to the tensing muscles in the lynx's body, Maverick was a master of survival and he saw it and ran! The lynx was not far behind, though it had not been expecting him to recover from the shock of his fear. What is that thing!? He dared not look back, but ran faster, faster than he had ever run in his life. He could hear the heavy pawsteps behind him, and they seemed to be keeping up just fine. In all actuality, Maverick thought the huge cat could overtake him if he wanted to, but was just toying with him, having fun with his prey!
