The grey warrior was restless, her swollen stomach churning uncomfortably, it had been a few days since she was due to give birth and the queen to be was NOT in a good mood. All but Bonetail and Medicine cats had ceased to visit her in her current state and when the pain shot up her spine, Lilyfrost let out a low snarl " OWWWWHHH" she grumbled shifting to lay on her side where it might be more comfortable.
" BONETAIL, GET SMOKEFUR OR SHADOWPAW RIGHT NOW BEFORE YOU LOOSE YOUR EYE!!! " She yelled into the void of the Nightclan nusery, hoping that her 'mate' would at least honour her request or risk having his insides claweed off by a furious Lilyfrost.
" Oh when I get my claws on him, he will pay for doing this to me" she snarled, more to herself in the seemingly empty nusery as a threat to the white warrior who had captured her heart and then of all things.. did this to her!!!!

Even if Smokefur hadn't heard the angered howling of Lilyfrost all the way from the nursery, which she had, Bonetail wasted no time finding the medicine cat and requesting assistance for his mate that was now entering labor. It was probably a smart move on his part as Smokefur didn't feel like she was in any danger, however that didn't mean Bonetail wasn't. Bonetail dismissed himself and left Smokefur to gather her things and catch up, which also included her apprentice. Shadowpaw wasn't a 'thing' however he was needed, there is no better training than on the job after all, and the young tom was about to get a lot of it today. As it wasn't Shadowpaws' first day on the job Smokefur didn't feel that it was too mean to put him on the spot, turning towards him she posed a short quiz. "Alright Shadowpaw, Lilyfrost has started kitting. What are all the things you think we will need?"

curiosity is not a sin...
...but we should exercise caution with our curiosity
Smokefur put him on the spot immediately, interrupting the preparatory list he had already been constructing in his head. Blinking in surprise at the direct question, the tom hesitated a few heartbeats, and then spoke the rest of that list allowed. "Ragwort, if it's not too late. Borage leaves to help with Lilyfrost's milk supply, and..." The last one, what was the last one? He knew it by smell, and after going to their herb stores, gently touching his nose to each one, Shadowpaw selected one of the leaves and brought it to Smokefur. "Raspberry leaves, to help with the pain!"
Another agonized yowl made Shadowpaw's ears quiver as if the sound had slapped him upside the head. The healer tom grabbed a second raspberry leaf. She sounds like she's in so much pain..."Are kittings always like this?" Shadowpaw mewed, trusting that because of Smokefur's calm, controlled demeanor that Lilyfrost wasn't in any real danger.
They were by no means taking their sweet time about this, but Smokefur wasn't rushing them either. Shadowpaw collected the other two plants he'd mentioned, and kept hold of the ragwort and borage, unable to carry the raspberry leaves as well. I could find something to soothe her nerves, too. However, Shadowpaw knew some herbs, like poppy seeds, couldn't be given to queens in labor. If he accidentally caused harm to Lilyfrost or her kits, he'd never forgive himself.
No wild ideas. No surprise herbal concoctions. Lilyfrost was trusting them to help, not play a game of what does this plant do?
Whatever Smokefur and Shadowpaw were doing, they were sure taken their sweet time, for a queen in labour, every second felt like an eternity and she was in so much pain, she couldve lost conciousness. " FOR STAR CLAN'S SAKE, IF THEY DON'T HURRY UP, I'LL CLAW THEIR EARS OFF... THIS IS VERY UNPLEASANT" She yelled, it seemed that this whole kitting thing was not something the young queen had ever experienced before, but Smokefur, this wasn't the healer's first time at watching kit's enter the world, but if she didn't hurry, this queen would make sure it was her last.
All Lilyfrost felt was searing hot pain from her stomach, her kits pushing each other, fighting to be born first, she had the overwhelming desire to push but all she wanted to do was sob, anything to make the pain stop. " Where's Bonetail, I want him.... get him for me please?" She mewwed softly at the nearest cat, ironically her mother. Rainsong snorted at the request " My darling, he is not exactly keep on having his insides removed..." she tried to explain but Lilyfrost just hissed at her in response, " I DON'T CARE MOTHER.... he calms me..." She snarled at the older grey she cat as tthe Elder finally got the hint and disappeared from Lilyfrost's side to find her daughter's 'mate".
While Lilyfrost muttered profanties about how much pain she was in under her breath her mother did not waste time rushing to locate the white tom with a urgency that could be described as feral.
" Bonetail, Lilyfrost needs you, Be the tom she thinks you are, the tom that she loves... Please..." the elder scolded the young tom, knowing her daughter thought highly of the warrior who fathered her kits. Rainsong's personal opinion should not spoil this joyful moment.

Smokefur watched as Shadowpaw dutifully selected the tools with which they would be working, under her gaze he did not falter and she was pleased to say they had plenty to handle the kitting. Before departing for the nursery, something that probably would have upset Lilyfrost had she known, Smokefur took a moment to answer her apprentices question and impart more knowledge. "Yes Shadowpaw, this is fairly typical for kitting. The reactions you will see vary from one cat to another, however the important thing to remember is to stay calm. You have to be look confident for Lilyfrost, she has to know you are competent as a medicine cat." With her words of wisdom finished Smokefur picked up a portion of the herbs Shadowpaw had set aside and began to make her way towards the Nursery. Pausing halfway to their destination Smokefur dropped her herbs and said, "Which you are, by the way." After which she picked them back up and entered the nursery.
" Bonetail, Lilyfrost needs you, Be the tom she thinks you are, the tom that she loves... Please..."
Bonetail stepped back with a startled hiss. Lilyfrost wanted him to be there for the kitting? His thoughts flashed back to that talk they'd had, about her expectations of him. The gray queen had swore she didn't expect much of him in the way of fatherhood - and Bonetail had been satisfied with that. Heart thundering, Bonetail cursed under his breath and nodded to Rainsong. "Fine."
He would be there for her.
The screeching from earlier had been taken by the white warrior as his cue to stay very very far away, and when he approached the nursery, it was with semi-flattened ears, as if he anticipated getting his pelt clawed off by an anguished Lilyfrost. It was crowded now with Shadowpaw and Smokefur present. He looked awkwardly at the medicine cats, until Shadowpaw nudged him with a paw. "Move, please. You're blocking our light."
Bonetail scowled at the apprenticed healer; there was nowhere to go but deeper into the nursery. Bonetail took a bracing breath, then weaseled in to curl up beside Lilyfrost, licking her ear though he felt like he was plucking blades of grass for all the good it did. "I'm here," Bonetail murmured, watching her belly shiver from the contractions. Seeing any cat lying down and in pain caused painful memories to resurface.
Coyotepaw's broken form, reeking of fox and blood.
What if Lilyfrost didn't make it? Bonetail was seized by that thought, feeling as if his heart had been dropped from the tallest tree. He couldn't explain the sensation, but he understood enough to know that he would miss her. That he might understand his father's grief a little more. "You're doing great, Lilyfrost." Bonetail forced a purr, keeping a sharp eye on the medicine cats as if he could make them work more dilligently that way.
When Smokefur had told him he was a competent medicine cat - not just an apprentice - Shadowpaw's heart had soaked up the praise like a dry mossball in a puddle. He felt validated, and though he loved his work and enjoyed the rare knowledge he had the opportunity to learn, it had not been easy. Memorizing herbs, perfecting his approach with stubborn or difficult patients... Greencough...
Shadowpaw walked into the nursery with a deep sense of calm. His nerves were still there, but it's like they were locked away somewhere - frozen beneath the surface as steady paws carried him to Lilyfrost's side. A few brief words with Bonetail, and the gray queen quickly absorbed all of Shadowpaw's attention, though he frequently glanced to Smokefur, both to watch what she did or said, and to confer over the right amount of herbs to give.
"These raspberry leaves will help with pain," mewed Shadowpaw, sliding them over quickly. "They're very dry, I apologize." He brought the ragwort closer, mixing it with the raspberry leaves. "This will keep your strength up."Were they coming soon? The kits. Shadowpaw had never witnessed a kitting until now, and though he could sense the shivers in her belly getting more frequent, he did not know if that was something significant or something to be worried over.
We'll make sure nothing happens to Lilyfrost and her kits, Shadowpaw promised, feeling awake and aware as he never had before.
Lilyfrost was on edge, in pain and overall in quite the mood when Smokefur and Shadowpaw made their appearence, followed by, much to Lilyfrost's suprise. Bonetail, himself and while she had asked her mother to get her 'mate' for her, she had actually not expected him to come. The half hearted attempt at a smile the grey queen gave to the white warrior as he settled down beside her was soon replaced with a grimace as her contractions got more and more intense,
Shadowpaw spoke about 'keeping her strenght up' and and she sniffed warily at the budle he had offered her, pain shining in her eyes as she gave a grateful nod the the apprentice medicine cat. " Is this gonna take much longer, it hurts and I;m tired" she muttered softly, leaning against her mate with heavy pants shaking her small frame. " Bonetail, thank you" she whispered, so softly it was almost unheard. She had always said that she loved him before the worst contraction of all hit her. " Oh Starclan that hurts" she mewwed, like a hurt kit complaining to it's mother as the first of her three kits entered the world. A white kit that immediately earned her paternal grandmother's name of Ghostkit. After Ghostkit, came Greykit, a sweet mix of both Lilyfrost's grey coat and Bonetail's white and then the smallest of them all, Crowkit was born, a mix of black and white that immediately reminded the queen of her eldest brother. " Are they okay?" she questioned the medicine cat's assuming that they would be checking over the tiny newborns for injuries or anything else. Speech"
