Honeysong We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky As we lie in fields of gold67 Moons, Senior Warrior of TreeClan She felt, for the first time since returning to camp, full of energy and well rested. The road to getting back on her paws and back into the role as a functional member of TreeClan had been a difficult one. She was happy now, as much as she could be all things considered. The deaths of so many clanmates still hurt, especially the more recent death of Bluejay. She'd collapsed the day she returned and spent the next few days in the medicine den. The day their beloved medicine cat had gone to join StarClan had been only the second day she'd been back in the warrior's den with the others. Now she was well and hole and slowly filling back out.
Her day had started out good enough, she'd joined a patrol for a check of the borders then returned to find that Lionstar wanted to speak with her. Or, more specifically, to take a walk so they could talk. She loved her clanmates very much, but they could be very nosy sometimes. Honeysong hummed softly to herself as they left camp, padding along at a good pace so that he wouldn't have to change his stride for her shorter legs. She wasn't a small she-cat, but neither was she large, and Lionstar was a big tom by all standards.
They had so much to talk about. What were they to one another? She loved him, she'd loved him since they were apprentices, and that hadn't changed. Even when she'd had her short-lived romance with Dustburrow she was always looking to see what Lionstar was doing. She'd supported him through everything, through heartbreak and triumph, through the best and worst the clan and their lives had been through. Even though she'd always known his heart was elsewhere she still fostered a deep abiding affection for the golden tom, that would likely never change. But, for some time now, things had been different. They spent more time together, she'd been his confidant and he hers. He'd brought her to his den, to the leader's den, when the world dissolved around them at all the deaths brought by greencough and her own return to the clan. He'd come to see her when the quarantine was in effect, and through Falconstorm she knew he'd gotten very sick himself due to her. She had born her soul to him, told him things no one else knew, let him soothe her when her nightmares overcame her. He was her safe place.
But...how did he feel? She knew something was going on, that much was certain, but was it the sort of thing that turned into a full-fledged romance? Could they be together, really together, as she had so long wished to be? She wasn't a lovestruck apprentice anymore, and life had hurt his heart more times than she cared to think on, but they'd always found a way back to one another. Perhaps, StarClan willing, it was a sign.
"The Great Maple is always so peaceful." She mentioned to him. And it was too hot for most of the others to roam out this way. The full heat of day had retreated as evening approached, but it was still very warm.

blinded by the light of a new sun take it to the world, gonna sing it like an anthem
If grief hadn't become such a large part of his life, through nearly every season, Lionstar might have been surprised only six sunrises had come and gone since Bluejay's death. This recent loss had struck him hard, perhaps the hardest. She had been... like a daughter to him, or at the very least, someone he wished his own kits would grow up to emulate (if he'd had any). How heavy his heart had become, how slow his steps, for the first few days after. But that hadn't been meant to last. Part of honoring Bluejay's memory was ensuring life went on as normal. She would not have wanted the whole Clan wallowing in sorrow; she would have wanted them to overcome this - even if it seemed impossible. Bluejay had loved TreeClan dearly. Loved her role as a medicine cat. There were three cats she had left behind to continue her work; Gorsetail, Lionstar, and Falconstorm. This sense of purpose helped mitigate some of the damage, though Lionstar knew it would be a while before he felt truly happy and cheerful again. With the intention of nudging his heart in a brighter direction, Lionstar had sought out Honeysong as soon as she'd returned from patrol. Already, the stones sitting in his stomach were beginning to disappear in her presence. Without conscious effort, Lionstar's pelt brushed against Honeysong's. She's recovered, finally. It brought a soft smile to his muzzle to see her back to her old self. The Great Maple towered above the two TreeClan cats approaching, and Lionstar's gaze was drawn upward to the treetops, golden eyes narrowing against the shreddings of light slipping through the dense foliage. A hot summer wind teased his mane into disarray, and he gave it a quick shake. "Mhm. I know others favor the wildflower clearing, or the sparkling brook - but this has always been one of my favorite places." Lionstar's claws unsheathed slightly as he stepped onto the massive roots, picking a comfortable spot in the shade. With a gentle sweep of his tail, he beckoned Honeysong to his side, his smile growing at the memories that were carried back on the breeze. "Do you remember what I said in leaf-fall?" His voice was a soft rumble, but there was a hint of apology in his eyes. "How if we were still without mates by Greenleaf, we'd be stuck with each other?" The golden tom let out an uncharacteristically awkward sound, half-laugh, half-exhale. "I'm sorry I said that. I wouldn't be stuck with you at all. I'd be honored and humbled to have you by my side. You're an amazing cat, Honeysong. I'm sorry it took me so long to realize it."Lionstar's heart began to trot. And then run. And finally, gallop. He couldn't stop the low, certain purr. "Is it too late to tell you I love you?" He put his heart in his words, leaving it there as an offering for her to take - or gently return to him. Lionstar couldn't be too late, could he? They had grown so close, and every time he thought of her, of how she made him feel, and how his life was genuinely better with her in it, Lionstar felt so certain of his feelings. Of the love he had for her. Maybe she'd be surprised? After all this time, that stubborn fool of a tom finally had the sense to fall in love with her properly... Or maybe she'd be relieved? They had survived so many difficult things. At last, this was their chance to be together. To acknowledge what had been nurtured between them for the past nine moons. leader of TreeClan

Honeysong We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky As we lie in fields of gold67 Moons, Senior Warrior of TreeClan She looked up the length of the tree, remembering climbing in those branches when they were bare of any leaves. Seeing it now made the memory surface and a smile come to her face. It was usually good memories when it came to she and Lionstar spending time together. The ones that weren't so bright were still time she spent with him. Time together was never wasted, just channeled into different experiences. Honeysong finally leapt up on the roots and settled herself next to him, tail wrapping around her paws. Ears swiveled towards her long time friend, giving him her absolute attention while at the same time trusting that he'd let her know if something bad was coming.
"I do remember. I also remember saying that it wasn't stuck with someone if you were enjoying their company." Something to that effect. But then he was apologizing for it and she had to put a paw up and bat him with one. She was about to tell him that he didn't have to apologize, even had her mouth open to speak, when he continued his train of thought. Her mouth snapped shut and she ducked her head a little in embarrassment. Ears flicked back up and she slowly looked at him again, not sure where he was going with his line of commentary. "I've been at your side since we were young, it was always my pleasure to help you, to keep you company when you needed it, to be at your side. It made me happy to be with you, to have even a moment where I could say I'd been able to help you." She let off a soft sigh and butted her head against his chin. "You don't have to apologize to me. I'd rather you take the time to figure things out then push you too soon. You're the amazing one. You make me feel safe, even when nothing else does."
Her heart fluttered at his next question, and her eyes popped open wide. For a long while she couldn't speak, could barely breathe as she tried to comprehend what he was telling her. He loved her? After all this time, after waiting and hoping then giving up altogether. After contenting herself with his company and the life she'd built for herself within TreeClan, he'd fallen in love with her? What had changed? Why had it changed? Was he serious? Of course he was, Lionstar didn't joke about things like this.
"Lionstar?" Her voice shook as she spoke, and she felt her throat constrict. She looked at him, eyes still too big as her heart beat rapidly inside her. "Why would it be too late?" She asked softly, still too shocked to give much of a proper answer.

When forever rolls on through I’ll be holding on to you The silence that spanned his question and her answer was filled with agony and doubt. What if she was trying to tell him that she had moved on? Or accepted that he had just taken too long to finally see what had always been right here in front of him? Lionstar's tail flicked against the ground, a leaf caught in a storm. Wide golden eyes found his own anxious expression, and he felt his heart soften, hearing the emotion choking her up. "Because I'm as hard-headed as an oak-tree. It took me so long, I... feared your heart had changed its mind." He could still feel the soft caress of her fur against his, especially when she brushed the top of her head just under her throat, as if she were trying to rest against his mane. His heart. Those quiet, intimate moments were what made his heart beat fast, his pulse leaping for joy beneath his pelt as the world felt a little bit more right when she was around."I love you, Honeysong." To say those words felt like the first real warmth of greenleaf. It both warmed him up and made him feel a little breathless. They were utterly still, yet the golden tom's heart was galloping. Despite the maelstrom of emotions - raw, powerful affection coupled with the humble anxiety of a tom whose heart was laid bare - Lionstar was able to smile.Smile, because he wasn't thinking of himself any more. Lionstar would serve his Clan until his last breath. He put the needs of others before his own, always. Honeysong's happiness and safety was something he would fight tooth and claw to provide for her, whether they slept in separate dens, or shared a nest - and a life - together for the rest of their days. He wanted to take care of her. To make up for any past hurts. To prevent future hurts from happening. To just be with her, a concept that was as simple and complex as sunlight. It did not need to be put into words. It could be felt.leader of TreeClan

She actually got to her paws and moved so that she was standing in front of him. "You are a mousebrain." She told him deadpan, still feeling her heart race at what he'd said. And he was serious. How could he really want her? She shook her head. "I've been in love with you since I was an apprentice, nothing has or will ever change that." There, she'd said it. But more over. "You know, in choosing me, that you won't ever have kits of your own. I can't." Dustburrow had made sure of that when he'd caused her to lose the one litter she'd been pregnant with in her life. "I would be content, in this life and any other, just being with you. I adore you, Lionstar. I've walked at your side for as many moons as I can recall, and I want to walk the path StarClan has lain before us together from here on out." She stepped forward and rubbed her head against the fluffy expanse of his chest, just under his head. "My heart has been set on you for moons. Honestly, the only reason I even let Dustburrow court me was to see if it would make you jealous, get your attention." And then she'd fallen for the tom and the world had gone downhill from there. "If you're okay with no kits in our lives then I am yours." As she'd been for many moons now, he just had to catch up to her. Fawn

blinded by the light of a new sun take it to the world, gonna sing it like an anthem "My heart has been set on you for moons. Honestly, the only reason I even let Dustburrow court me was to see if it would make you jealous, get your attention."Horror sank its claws into Lionstar's heart, his ears briefly pinning back. To make me jealous? All that pain and sorrow she had suffered at the malicious intentions of Dustbarrow had been... for him? No, he inwardly moaned, praying to StarClan that wasn't what she meant. This was Honeysong, she was too intelligent, to perceptive to possibly become mates with a tom just to make him jealous. What had started off as a rouse to catch his attention must have... grown into something. StarClan, that had to be true. Lionstar felt like a wound was being ripped open, the happiness leaking out of him. The golden tom closed the harelength of space between them, and rested his chin on the top of her head, nuzzling Honeysong between the ears. A soft murmur drifted from his maw. "TreeClan is my family. You are my family. I don't need kits to be happy. Just you." Those words were still haunting him. Rather than let them fester, Lionstar took a hard swallow and stepped back until he could see her eyes. "What happened with Dustbarrow..." Could she see what he was going to ask? Lionstar shook his dark golden muzzle, whiskers twitching. "Was all of it to make me jealous?" Anything but that. Standing on the tallest branch, Lionstar had that rushing sensation that he was about to fall - either onto jagged rocks, or into a pile of leaves. Exceptionally long claws peeked out from their sheathes, gripping onto the earth for a little stability. As his heart beat hard in his ears, Lionstar was able to get a hold of himself. Even if that's true, you have the chance to make up for it. It was as she had said; they would walk the path StarClan had laid down for them together. She would be protected and loved and made happy in every way he knew how. leader of TreeClan

Honeysong We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky As we lie in fields of gold67 Moons, Senior Warrior of TreeClan It eased something to know that even though they couldn't have kits together he still wanted to be with her. That was one of her deepest fears, and now one that had been lain to rest. They could be together, be each others family, kits or no kits. Honeysong leaned into his body, letting herself relax and just be happy being here with him. It was a beautiful day, even if it was a bit hot. But they were together, they loved each other, and that was enough.
His next question made Honeysong lift shift away from him to look at him. "Only when he was courting me, then I fell in love with him. I would never accept someone as my mate just to make another cat jealous." She butted her head back under his chin, feeling his heart beating too fast. "Dustburrow was my mistake, I should have known better from what other she-cats told me about him. But at the time I was lonely and he was good to me, so I ignored it."
She butted her head against his chin again, being affectionate even as she discussed one of the most painful times in her life. "I regret ever letting him into my nest, but that is in the past now. He's gone, probably died out in the valley somewhere after he was banished from the Clan. I'm happy and healthy and I have you. That's all that matters to me."

blinded by the light of a new sun take it to the world, gonna sing it like an anthem "He'd better hope he's dead already," Lionstar grumbled, a flash of anger as quick as a lightning storm striking his heart. He would rip that tom to shreds, otherwise. There'd be nothing left of Dustburrow but a memory. What came the pulse of anger, was the soothing rainstorm of relief. Honeysong repeatedly butted her head against his chin, and he was prodded out of his dark musings each time. Lionstar smiled, nuzzling back."I'll keep you safe, Honeysong. Always." The stars did not need to be out for Lionstar to know he had his parents' blessings. He could practically feel the warmth of his mother's gaze on his pelt like sunshine. After so many moons... His heart had finally found a place to call home. A home that had been there the whole time. Lionstar pressed his pelt against hers, a gentle purr rumbling from the dark golden mane spread across his chest. He'd been a little afraid that Honeysong would be uncomfortable at the mention of Dustburrow - that wretch of a cat was the cause of one of the most painful, tragic moments of her life - but the happiness between was not so easily dampened. A discussion of Dustburrow couldn't break the giddiness and relief and joy over a confession well-received.leader of TreeClan 215 Words | Justice | notes: Finished? <3
