The apprentice glanced warily around, unused to being surrounded by water. His paws felt as if they would slip at any moment, and his eyes glanced nervously from the water to his mentor.
She would want him to swim, he knew it. That would be how a proper RainClan cat went; but why? Why did he suddenly feel as if seeing Tsuki wasn't so far away....

In the light of the day the she cats pelt shone almost gold as she sat beside the water of the river that ran through the heart of her territory. Her pearl coloured eyes shimmering gently on the apprentice beside her. She could sense some nervous vibes coming from him, but she wasn’t surprised. Rabbitpaw was a newcomer to the clan, once just a kit that had been found on her territory. She had been her own kind self and had let him stay, taking him on as her own apprentice.
’Don’t be afraid…’ she mewed softly, her voice soothing against the lapping of the water on the side of the bank. ’All RainClan cats can swim, you will be one of them.’ Cherrystar was certain that he would make a good warrior one day, despite his background and his little lost sister whom the leader had never met. Taking a deep breath and trying to allow Cherrystar's words to sink in reassuringly, the tom slid into the water. It lapped at his fur, pulling him down, and he tried to keep his nose up while the rest of his white and brown pelt submerged. It was freezing.
This was very likely because the season was leaf-bare, but nevertheless Rabbitpaw would have disliked the wet feeling penetrating his skin. "I-i-is th-this al-alright?" The apprentice shivered beneath liquid.
'It'll be over soon! And I'll be dry... right?' He wondered.

Cherrystar immediately saw that the young apprentice was struggling, and she had been prepared for just that. As his words reached her ears she paddled into the river beside him, her long ginger pelt sticking to her sides making her look thin compared to her usual plump appearance.
’Your doing fine!’ she mewed in a soft voice as the freezing water lapped around her neck. She hadn’t thought that it would have been as cold as this and was regretting that she hadn’t checked it first. Maybe we should wait until it gets warmer to do this… she thought to herself as Rabbitpaw shivered.
Pushing herself closer to him she outstretched a paw to aid him and keep his head above the water, the first time in water was always scary and she wasn’t sure on his swimming abilities.

Attempting to keep his head up, Rabbitpaw continued pushing his paws. The tom didn't want to show weakness but... it was probably very visable.
His brown eyes began to blur, and the tom gave a burst of energy to heave himself back onto land, panting and shivering. His stump of a tail was even soaked through, and the apprentice sneezed.
'I feel dizzy....'

Cherrystar was glad to see that her apprentice had not weakened completely and felt a rush of relieve when he admitted defeat and hauled himself onto the river bank. Dragging her sodden ginger pelt out after him she licked him vigorously on the cheeks a few times to warm him up again. It must have been harsh for him in that ice water, and even more so because it was his first time. She knew it would have been kinder to wait until the warmer weather set in, but there was always the chance that he could end up in the icy water alone, and he needed to be able to handle it when that time came.
’Your alright Rabbitpaw!’ she mewed softly shaking herself as dry as she could and then lying beside him to share her warmth with him. She knew that he would need to be taken to the medicine cat to be checked over properly, but she could at least warm him up first.

The apprentice sighed, and pressed his fur against Cherrystar's warm pelt. His first leaf-bare... after all, only 6 moons ago he had been born in greenleaf. "Ch-che-cherrystar, do you think we will see Angleheart again?" He couldn't help but begin to think of the deputy (whom he discovered from other cats was usually very nice) who was hostile to the rouge kit. Would she... have let him drown?

Cherrystar was glad to see that the young apprentice was able to talk again; her sharing of heat seemed to be warming him through. She would not be trying this again until the weather changed, or at least until the snow had thawed away. At the mention of her lost deputy she looked away, she herself did not know what had happened to Angelheart, or where she was now. ’Only StarClan knows where she is, and if she will return to us.’ she mewed simply. She remembered how the deputy had not wanted this kit to stay in the Clan, but the leader herself had insisted, it was after that that she had gone missing.

Rabbitpaw finally got up onto his forepaws, standing. His stature was shaky, but nevertheless he insisted to go. "Brightpool can check me when we get back to camp. I can make it, really!" He took a few slow steps, showing her that it was possibly for the tom to walk. Turning to face his leader again, brown eyes gleaming with confidence.

The ginger she cat was a little alarmed as the small tom stood shakily up. Nodding her head at her words she was no cat to argue with anyone without good reason and she knew that this experience would make him stronger. ’I am here for you if you need help on the way.’ she mewed softly and padding around to the side that the river was on. The last thing she wanted was for him to fall back into the frosty depths.
Her pearl eyes showed the care of a mother to her kits, she had chosen to take him on as an apprentice because when he came to the clan he was so small and innocent she had thought once again to the fact that she couldn’t have the kits that she had always wanted. But she wanted to bring Rabbitpaw up as a strong warrior, so she could say that he was her own, he hadn’t known the life of a Clan cat before he came here, just like a kit wouldn’t until they were born. *Caracalfang strode along the bank with Smoketalon. The two had decided to try for some pre-ice fishing and thought the sand bar would be a good place to try. The brown tom looked to the island and saw a shaky Rabbitpaw rise to his feet beside Cherrystar. With a good natured smile, he called to the pair.* Morning, you two! First swim, Rabbitpaw? Little chilly, isn't it? *He chuckled and slipped into the freezing water, stifling a gasp, then crossed to the island. He sat close to help add to the heat and share a little himself as he began to groom the better part of the water out of his fur, not bothering with his forepaws for now since they would just be getting wet as he fished anyway.*
*Smoketalon smiled sympatheticly at Rabbitpaw. Having been found too, he understood well sliping into ice-cold water for the first time. He touched his tail to the apprentice's shoulder.* Don't worry. You'll get use to it soon enough. It gets better after the first few times.

(Rabbitpaw's furture name would be Rabbittail, not Rabbitfur.)
The young cat nodded to Smoketalon, and shivered once again. At least, by the time he got back to camp maybe Snowfluff would let him play with her kits for awhile. The thought cheered him.
The tailess cat bounded ahead of Cherrystar with a new energy, but then stopped to make sure his mentor would still be with him. He didn't feel safe without her. Not just from wild things, but from his own adopted Clan.

Cherrystar nodded to her two warriors as they joined her and her apprentice by the river, it was nice for them to be so accepting of the young Rabbitpaw when so many of the others had frowned upon her letting him into the Clan so easily.
As he bounded on ahead she smiled and let out a purr of delight at the courage the apprentice showed after such a troublesome kithood. Feeling her own young side coming out she bounded along to his side once again. ’Race you to camp?’ She purred softly, she just wanted him to feel welcome in the clan, as any other member should feel.

*Caracalfang laughed as Cherrystar ran to catch up to her apprentice. He knew well how taking a kit for your own could make you feel like an apprentice again. He playfully splashed Smoketalon, who was gazing after the two in much the same manner.*
*Smoketalon was startled by the sudden addition of water to his steadily drying pelt. He yowled and jumped further back on the sand bar before he realized that Caracalfang had splashed him.* Mousedung, Caracalfang! Didn't you see Rabbitpaw shaking? The water is cold! *He shook he damp shoulder to try and rid himself of the drops, then sliped back down to fish.*
*Caracalfang laughed again. He knew his son wasn't really mad this time. He could always tell a slight difference in tone. He dabbed at a fish and barely hooked it by the tail. When he finished dispatching his catch he smiled at Smoketalon.* Who are you trying to fool? You've been a RainClan cat for a lot longer than him, you just got surprised!

Without replying, the tom stopped and leaned on his haunches. His amber eyes focused ahead intently.
But, he heard Cherrystar. "Catch you later!" He pressed his legs out for a burst of speed, running as fast as his young legs would carry him. Although, he was sure which way camp was in he didn't know if he could find it without stopping to check scents... oh well, the tom would worry about that later.
