28 MOONS LIGHTNINGCLAN WARRIOR
Dovecloud had the dawn patrol. Harestrike stretched out, appreciating having their shared nest all to himself. He'd spent the previous evening practicing some new battle moves - just to blow off some steam (he was beginning to feel like he was going to burst, if he didn't find a way to vent soon), and had collapsed into his nest without a second thought. That his bed wasn't as soft as he wanted it didn't matter to him.Word Count: 654 Words
He was relishing the peace and quiet.
Harestrike heard paw-steps approach (delicate, though they dragged a little as if the cat they belonged to was tired), just as Dovecloud's scent reached him. He rolled over a little, trying to give her some room (and resist grumbling). Just go straight to sleep, Dovecloud. Don't tell me about your morning. I was having such a good dream.
He didn't want her complaining and fussy to chase away his pleasant mood.
Dovecloud settled in beside him - and no sooner had he closed his eyes to doze off again - when she SHRIEKED as if she'd found a fox in the nursery. Harestrike bolted upright, whacking the top of his head off the den ceiling. He hissed, seeing stars, and Dovecloud was wailing, dancing from paw to paw with a few spots of crimson staining her pretty white flank. The whole den was awake now, and Harestrike, his ears wanting to tuck in to protect themselves from the shrill pitch of her voice, was able to make sense of the words.
"OUCH! Something BIT ME! HARESTRIKE!"
"Hold still," he mewed, and gently nosed through her flank - until his teeth enclosed around what felt like a thorn. What's that doing in there? "It's a thorn, I'll pull it out, okay?"
"NO don't!" Dovecloud wailed, scooting away from him as if he'd just told her had fleas.
"Just go see the medicine cat," snapped one of the warriors near the back of the den. Dovecloud, with another whimper as if mortally wounded, limped from the warriors' den with her tail tucked against her legs. Harestrike felt a stab of annoyance - with himself - why didn't I notice the thorn earlier? Dovecloud looked really hurt, and even though she was overdramatic at best, he still felt bad.
He followed after her like the dutiful mate.
What ensued, was an even bigger scene in Kindleflare's den. Dovecloud needed constant reassurance that once they removed the thorn, they'd be able to stem the bleeding. She'd been so sure it had pierced something vital, and went into heartwrenching sobs about how she was too young to die.
I'm not. StarClan, kill me. Harestrike had thought, his morning thoroughly ruined. After an hour, they were out of the medicine cat's den, but Dovecloud was still limping, and she'd refused to even look at him after they left. No matter how many times he said sorry.
"I'm going to stay with Firebird and Darkcloud. YOU do something about that bedding!" She snapped, and went into the elders' den to curl up with her parents without a second thought.
Harestrike ground his teeth together, already anticipating many, many nights spent convincing his mate that there were no more thorns in their bed. That it was safe to sleep, that she wouldn't wake up with a thorn in her eye, blah blah blah...
"Harestrike, I'm going to stretch my legs. Watch your siblings."
"Yeah, sure," he grunted, turning irritably towards the nursery. Wait a second...
Eaglekit.
That little piece of crowfood! Once he was sure Morningfrost was at least a few foxlengths from the nursery, Harestrike quickened his pace, until he was looming over Dawnkit's and Eaglekit's sleeping forms. He almost hesitated. Almost. Without ceremony, Harestrike gripped his little brother's tail, and yanked him out of his nest.
"You little pile of ratdung, do you think putting thorns in cats' nests is funny?" He growled, not caring if he woke up the other den's occupants.
