Echoshade was a paranoid queen. She knew this. She'd always been overprotective of her tiny kits, always kept a keen gaze on them and kept them from anything that would possibly hurt them. Kits needed to be safe until they were old enough to leave the nest. Then outings, like today's, were to be closely monitored. Today was the first time she'd taken them out of the nursery and it was only to sit just outside the safety of the nursery and the other queen's company. Kits needed sunshine, and newleaf was the perfect time to let them out to play and enjoy the day. Not too hot, not too cold, and no thick snow to lose them in. Especially her little Fernkit, who was the spitting image of her father. The two she-kits tussled around near her paws, each trying to pin the other to the ground before pouncing her flicking tail with comical inaccuracy and starting over again. Echoshade was a doting queen, and indulged her kits with their antics. As long as they stayed close. The she-cat eventually looked around again, noticing one of her kithood friends walking nearby. Brother to the kits father. A slow smile spread across her face. "Dewkit, Fernkit." They gave her their immediate attention, though they were wriggling with energy. "That's Gorgeleap. He wants you to play with him." The she-kits cheered and charged over to their uncle, tumbling over their little paws and taking their best kitten leaps at the last second. Echoshade chuckled as she stood just as her two kits ran into the side of the fluffy tom and bounced off with little squeaks. Well, Fernkit bounced off, Dewkit clung to his side with little claws tangled into his pelt. "Look Mother, I did it!" BlooRey DVD

Tear the whole world down, tear the whole world down WARRIOR OF RAINCLAN || 22 MOONS || TOM Steady paws set down in a slow pattern, toes splaying slightly as his weight transferred from one to another. His jaws were shut tightly over the tails of two fish, one trout and one minnow; some might say he'd had a good hunt. But to him? It had been a hunt. He'd performed a necessary task for the Clan, and his efforts had returned adequate reward. His sights were set on the freshkill pile, and perhaps this accounted for his lack of attention to his surroundings. That, and he was rather ready to get out of this heat.
Unfortunately for him, that meant he was not aware of Echoshade's presence near the nursery's entrance. Had he been, the tom would have been suspicious of her sneaky, playful nature. Extraordinarily suspicious. Gorgeleap didn't clue in until a squealing, charging mass of fur and limbs collided with his flank. His head jerked up slightly, momentary alarm lancing through his grey-green gaze. But that ended his emotive streak; his paws didn't even budge from their position. No, the entirety of the the kits' momentum was funneled straight back into their own limbs. Or at least this was the case for Fernkit, who bounced clear of him.
Dewkit on the other paw, stayed firmly routed to his fur, kit claws desperately holding onto whatever they could reach. His gaze moved from the kit on his flank, to the kit on the ground, to their mother, before finally setting upon the freshkill pile with a heavy sigh. His long furred tail flicked behind him, tapping Fernkit's shoulder in a manner that might have been called taunting if he was any other warrior. Regardless, it beckoned to Fernkit, capturing her attention all the way to the freshkill pile where he deposited both fish before turning back to the nursery.
Of course, this required him to step over the kit, large paws swinging just clear of her before his tail quickly captured her focus once again. Thus began his trudge back to the nursery, one squealing kit pouncing after his tail while a second giggled delightedly still clinging to his side. Partially lidded eyes fell on the mother of the two kits as he approached, Gorgeleap still rounding the two kits back to her. "I think" He began, his voice flat as an ear flicked softly. "These belong to you." ~380 Words || Justice ||Gorgeleap is basically kit velcro

The kits were giggling the entire way back and forth, the trip to the fresh kill pile the most exciting adventure they'd had in their little lives. Echoshade smiled indulgently at them as she came to her paws and trotted over to stand near Gorgeleap. "They do." She leaned over and licked first one, then the other kit, making them squeal and come to her for some affection. Which she happily gave them before nudging them back towards Gorgeleap. "They want to play with you. It won't hurt you to indulge them, Gorgeleap." She smiled sweetly at him as she spoke, though the undertone of her words were that if he upset her kits he would be facing her wrath. But she did like this tom, they'd been in the nursery together as kits after all, and his brother was the father of her kits. So she tried to remain on good terms with them. "Besides, when was the last time you came to see your nieces?" The kits cheered at their mother's logic and climbed on Gorgeleap, one pouncing his tail while the other sat on his back and cuddled against his fluff. "See, they like you." BlooRey DVD

Tear the whole world down, tear the whole world down WARRIOR OF RAINCLAN || 22 MOONS || TOM Blank, pale green eyes stared back at Echoshade, easily meeting her big blue ones. The large tom blinked slowly, evidently not as impressed with her logic as the kits were. His plume-like tail waved lazily behind him, long fur just barely brushing the ground as it weaved like a snake among the trampled reeds. Despite her cheery, warm exterior, Gorgeleap knew this particular she-cat to be fierce. He assumed one of the major triggers to this ferocity would be any perceived mistreatment of her kits. Dealing with a ticked off she-cat seemed far more inconvenient than, how did she call it... Indulging the two kits.
May the Dark Forest open up and swallow me whole. He thought to himself. He'd taken his eyes off the two bundles of fur for less than a heartbeat, and somehow they'd reattached themselves to him. He could feel the slightest weight between his shoulder blades, where Dewkit had evidently taken residence. Fernkit, on the other paw, had reoccupied herself with his tail; every now and again, needle-like kit claws would successfully latch into his fur, halting the swishing motion of his tail. With a heavy exhale, the brown Maine Coon's ear twitched atop his head.
You just had to introduce her to your tail, didn't you Gorgeleap. Came the sardonic voice in his head. "... Fine, indulge I shall." He meowed flatly, broad muzzle swinging toward the fresh-kill pile. "I am, however, going to eat." Large paws began to move again, the RainClan tom casting the queen another glance before adding. "Join if you want, I'm apparently taking your kits." Finishing his even-toned rumbled with the slightest of snorts, Gorgeleap set course for the fresh-kill pile. Dewkit mewled triumphantly, clinging to his back as though he were a great enemy to be defeated, rocking on her perch with each of his steps.
Fernkit determinedly held onto his tail, kitten teeth locked around a thick tuft of fur. The tugging weight didn't slow Gorgeleap, instead causing the second kit to be dragged across the terrain, giggling wildly the whole time. Every now and again, she'd take a few bounds forward before planting her paws to try and yank him back. But it was no use, and she would go down in a flailing, laughing mound of fur, bouncing along the terrain behind the larger tom. ~380 Words || Justice ||Kit Velcro and kit-napping XD

"Hmm." She gave him her best smile and followed, keeping a keen eye on her beloved kits. Gorgeleap may have acted all put out, but she knew he had a good heart. He deserved better than he got at times, despite his disposition. She hadn't given up on he or Brookfall even though they had left with mentors that were Purists. That hadn't been their fault, and so she now tried her best to make sure both of them knew she still thought of them as friends. Her kits were overjoyed to have someone to play with, their mother's overprotective presence nearby keeping them calm and happy to play. She had never let anything touch her kittens, and nothing ever would. She was a warrior first, even with two little kits to attend to. Warrior and queen, though the queen title would leave with her kits when they went on to apprentices. She prayed StarClan would slow time so that she could enjoy them while they were young and needed her. Fernkit, the little silver menace, seemed determined to take down the large tom. Echoshade could only smile and laugh internally. Despite how he complained Gorgeleap was a good kit-sitter. So long as he didn't sit on them in a literal fashion. She waited until he'd gotten his food and eaten it before sidling up beside her old friend and butting her head under his chin affectionately. "Thank you for letting them play." She was sweet and affectionate when she wanted to be. Of course, giving him affection meant the kits thought being she-cats they were supposed to do the same. So they went from climbing all over him to huddling in against his large frame and cuddling him mercilessly. Little kit purrs rumbled from their bodies, and Echoshade had to laugh softly. "They really like you." BlooRey DVD----------------------- Tagging: Fate of Five Staff for QOTS Quote: "Join if you want, I'm apparently taking your kits." Said by: Bloodrose's Gorgeleap

Tear the whole world down, tear the whole world down WARRIOR OF RAINCLAN || 22 MOONS || TOM The big tom did eventually make it to the freshkill pile, kits and all. After a moment, he bowed his head to pull a trout off the top of the pile. He thought Echoshade might pick herself something to eat, but she seemed content to simply sit with him. With a slow blink, the large brown tom focused his attention on his meal, doing his best to ignore the paws tromping all over him. It was moderately enjoyable, the kits mostly kept in check by their mother's stern gaze. Mostly. But he still could not figure out what she was playing at.
His tail tip twitched slowly, pale green eyes slipping sideways to glance at the she-cat in something akin to suspicion. Still, the trout took precedence seeing as everyone in his company appeared content with the current goings-on. He would not become aware of the depths of Echoshade's plotting until he finished his meal. Oh yes, just as he was licking his jaws, trout carcass void of anything but bones, his kithood friend suddenly slid over to him and pressed her head against his chin. Tufted ears shot up in a glimmer of alarm as his pale eyes stared down at her as best he could.
What was even more inconveniently alarming to the tom, however, was when the small kits read into their mother's actions and chose to mimic them. Abandoning their previous posts, the kits curled up against his belly with soft purrs. He looked at Echoshade, at the kits, and back again, though he made no move to get away from them. Instead, he moved his tail in long, slow movements. A pale gaze scrutinized her for a moment, a frown tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Now you've done it. If they fall asleep here, I'll be stuck until the day the sun shines in the Dark Forest."
Despite the impassive tone and the sigh bordering on defeated, the big tom shifted to make himself a little more comfortable. In the process, he wrapped himself around the two she-kits, bushy tail forming a barrier for them against the outside world. With his readjustments made, the tom crossed one fore paw over the other and set his gaze toward observing the camp a moment. He figured if Echoshade had any more to say, she would speak. Then he would offer her his full attention once more. 400 Words || Justice ||He's a softie deep down

"If they fall asleep I'll carry them back to my nest." She flicked her tail so that it brushed against his side. "Lighten up, won't you. You act as if a little affection from a couple of kits is going to kill you." She did scoot over so that she wasn't being so forward with him. She was affectionate by nature and had never thought of it as being much of a big deal. Still, some cats didn't like it when she cuddled them. Apparently, Gorgeleap was one of those. Echoshade leaned over and gave each purring ball of fur a good nuzzle, making their little purrs ramp up a little bit. Fernkit actually climbed in-between Gorgeleap's paws and snuggled against his chest, looking up at him with eyes the same shade as the cat that sired her. "Mew?" Her heart melted. How could anyone not like kits? When he shifted to protect them she gave him a smile and headbutted him in the shoulder. It seemed little Dewkit got the idea and climbed in next to her sister to purr in against his chest where it was warm and secure. They trusted him to protect them like they trusted their mother to protect them. Kits were like that. Even cuter? Now there were two pairs of kit eyes staring at him adoringly. BlooRey DVD

Tear the whole world down, tear the whole world down WARRIOR OF RAINCLAN || 22 MOONS || TOM His gaze was drawn downward as the two kits clambered into a new position, stationing themselves between his crossed fore paws and his fluffy chest. Pale green eyes shifted from one blue-eyed kit stare to the other slowly, blinking as though expecting them to ask something of him. Echoshade's headbutt against his shoulder caused an ear to pivot, the large mixed-brown tom eventually tearing his eyes away from the two kits to glance toward their mother once more. His tail tip twitched slightly, and Gorgeleap considered his brown and white kithood friend silently for a moment longer.
Though his eyes drifted back to the two younger she-cats staring up at him from the ground below, his attention remained very much on Echoshade, as indicated by the pivot of his ear closest to her. "Affection? No, I admit that would be an unlikely, and unfortunate end." And yet, there was a common saying, what was it... If looks could kill. Sure, in most cases it referred to the daggers some temperamental characters could send with their glares alone. But if you asked Gorgeleap, there was a whole other meaning behind that silly little saying.
"I might, however, disintegrate into nothing beneath their stares." He made a thoughtful sound, something caught between a snort and a sigh. "Though I suppose that shouldn't come as a surprise. Between yourself and Silverfrost? They were bound to be endowed with incomparable gazes." He meowed flatly. Lifting his gaze from them once more, he considered Echoshade behind partially lidded eyes. She was one of a string of she-cats that his brother had swept up and left behind. And yet, Echoshade had something those other she-cats did not; they'd grown up together, and if you asked Gorgeleap? Silverfrost cared more about her than the others, though not necessarily in the romantic sense.
Echoshade's situation was different, though he could not put a paw on why. Perhaps it was insensitive of him, but Gorgeleap had never been known for his... Social graces. "Why Silverfrost, after Thrushthorn. His reputation is not a secret. Did you not want more than what Silverfrost could offer?" He was by no means criticizing her, or speaking ill of her kits. To be frank, he was merely uncertain as to the motivation behind it all; it was a curiosity of sorts. He figured asking was the best course towards figuring out why. ~390 Words || Justice ||-shakes head at Gorge-

She couldn't help but laugh, but at the way he said it and that he'd said it at all. More that she couldn't decide if he was serious or just being sarcastic. She headbutted him again for good measure. The kits mewed at them both this time, and Echoshade leaned over to nuzzle them each in turn. Dewkit snuggled against Gorgeleap's chest again, trying to disappear against his fluffy hide. Fernkit, too bright to even try such a thing, moved so that she could sit on his paws. Silverfrost's eyes in her tiny face was actually a fairly unnerving thing for her mother, especially since the small kit tended to stare at others for long periods of time without blinking or speaking. She laughed again at his comment. "I have to agree with you there. They do tend to stare very hard. My mother used to tell me that kits could see straight to a cat's spirit if they looked them in the eye long enough." Because kits were spirits of StarClan before they came into being. At least her mother had told her that. She considered her kithood friend for a long moment, meeting his gaze with her own. Of course, then he had to comment on the kit's eyes and compare them to her own and their sire's. It took a full minute for her to realize he'd given her a compliment, albeit a very veiled one. Still..."Incomparable hm?" She tipped her head then rubbed her head under his chin. "You're sweet." And she didn't care if she embarrassed him for calling him out on the compliment. If he even realized it had come out that way. And then, of course, he had to bring up Thrusthorn. Her body went stiff and the kits immediately stopped their cuddling to stare at her, seeking reassurance. They were safe with an adult cat around, but their mother's stillness worried them. Finally, Echoshade sighed, the kits relaxing too. "I was in a bad place after losing Thrushthorn. Silverfrost drug me out of it. For awhile, I thought I could change him. I was wrong." Which was more of the story than most get. It was only partially the truth, but no one would know that. BlooRey DVD

Tear the whole world down, tear the whole world down WARRIOR OF RAINCLAN || 22 MOONS || TOM A rush of air escaped him in another soft snort as Echoshade rubbed her head beneath his chin once more. Really, it was directed at her use of the word sweet to describe him. He'd been called many things before, but sweet? That was certainly a new one. Most preferred to compare him to the blunt side of a rock wall. Gruff, indifferent, and just as emotive as a rock too. An ear pricked forward as his kithood friend's body seemed to go stiff, the slightest twitch of Gorgeleap's mouth the only sign he'd noticed the she-cat's reaction.
He was dimly aware of Fernkit on his paw, just as stiff as her mother. Apparently, the kits had picked up on the reaction too. He kept his flat stare upon the oldest she-cat, however, more interested in what she might have to say than what the kits were doing. Whatever had seized her ebbed away finally, accompanied with a sigh. Dewkit and Fernkit seemed to accept that as a signal to return to normal, his long fur suddenly becoming much more interesting to them. Gorgeleap, on the other paw, listened intently to Echoshade's reply behind his stone-faced mask.
As if he might spot Silverfrost in that moment (despite the odds of such an event being extraordinarily slim), the large brown tom's gaze drifted to the warrior's den. He made a sound mildly akin to interest, thick tail tip flicking up. "Change him." He rumbled in a disinterested tone. The big tom couldn't help but feel as though she might be hiding something, as though she'd lied to him if only through omission of a fact. But he held his tongue, for he'd recognized he'd already pressed on her patience upon bringing up her deceased lover's name. "Perhaps some day he will change. But the catalyst to that will have to be grand." He paused for a moment.
"It is our intrinsic nature to resist change. Silverfrost is certainly no exception, nor is he daft either. He will change when change becomes the option of greatest importance." Eventually his gaze made it back to the she-kits, aware of their stares once more. He looked from one to the other, his features ever lacking in emotion, briefly assessing their behavior and appearances. Pale green eyes didn't remain there long, however, returning to the mother of the two kits to eye her speculatively for a moment.
"I suppose I should apologize. It is obvious I brought you displeasure and discomfort with my question. Such was not my intent." He meowed, just as flatly as ever. ~420 Words || Justice ||Sorry about the delay!

She took a deep breath and let it out slow. Gorgeleap meant no harm, it was a cat's nature to be curious about things. And what was more curious than a she-cat that had born his brother's kits but was not his mate? She certainly wasn't the first, nor would she be the last, if his personality stayed the same. Her kits were content in the tom's company, and it was nice to talk to someone her own age for once. She loved her kits, but the nursery did get claustrophobic after awhile. Echoshade finally gave him a smile, one that was a little wilted at the edges, but at least she smiled. She was usually a very happy she-cat. After all, she had everything she wanted. A safe clan to live in, kits of her own, and friends. A mate was something she didn't expect to find, not after losing Thrushthorn, but she wouldn't think on that right now. But, back on track. "The cat that can change Silverfrost I don't think exists yet. It'll take more than being a mentor to make him take things seriously." And stop chasing she-cat's tails. That tom flittered in and out of love so easily, and no one could keep him tied to them for long. And he had no care for the consequences of his actions to the clan. Kits were wonderful, but a single she-cat with no mate sometimes didn't have a help system in place if she didn't have a family. Echoshade had been lucky to have her kits the same time as there were other queens in the nursery, so she didn't have that problem. And Silverfrost did come to see her, just not the kits. Which was fine. But he'd apologized and it was okay. "Its okay." Everyone thought Gorgeleap was nothing more than sarcasm and an often flat tone, but she knew otherwise. He was a kind tom who seemed to like kits enough that he didn't knock hers away. Though that could be because she'd shred him if he did so. BlooRey DVD
