It had been exactly five days since the fiasco at Sun Stones. Honeynose felt terrible - not just physically, but emotionally as well. No longer could the tabby and white she-cat smile cheerily at Wolfclaw, Frozenrain, Hawkstar, Eagletalon - and the other senior warriors. Their collective disappointment loomed over her like a perpetual stormcloud.
She felt like she'd let them all down. Lost any standing or respect she'd gotten as a warrior; yes, she and Herondive had tried to stop Vipertail and his group but... they'd ended up fighting anyway.
And then greencough had struck. Wolfclaw and Eagletalon, as well as what felt like half the Clan were in the moss meadow trying to fight off the illness. The Clan needed all healthy paws doing as much hunting and water-fetching as possible. Honeynose had taken it upon herself to clean out the bedding in the warriors' den, and was presently taking out the oldest moss first. Without thinking, her paws began to ball up Vipertail's, her mind wandering back to the furious look on Hawkstar's face six nights ago. Honeynose's stomach was tangled up like a spider's web, so much so that she feared she'd never be able to eat anything tonight. But she needed to keep her strength up. They all did.
Kicking out the dirty bedding, Honeynose worked until the warriors' den was practically empty, and, satisfied, turned around - to stare at the wall of moss she'd unintentionally created with her haphazard flinging. "Aw fox dung," Honeynose mumbled, and went to try to peer over the moss, not wanting to push her way through it. "Is anyone there? Hello? If someone could just move a little of this, I could get out!"

VipertailStoneClan - 24 Moons - Tom - Warrior As much as he tried not to think about it, Vipertail couldn't help but feel... well, unpleasant about what had transpired some days ago. What had gone wrong? It had all made so much sense in his head. The timing should have been perfect! Right? The warrior shook himself. He wouldn't dwell on it: not now. He had enough on his paws. Namely, the moss he'd just cleared out from the nursery, which had become irritatingly stuck in his claws. Hawkstar sure knew how to pick punishments; he had not missed this.
Trying to stifle his agitation, he walked across camp, thankful that it seemed mostly empty just now. His ear twitched as he heard a muffled curse come from the warrior's den. Curious, he turned towards it, surprised to see the entrance barricaded with old bedding. A little voice came from within. "If someone could just move a little of this..." Honeynose?
Vipertail's whiskers twitched as he trotted up to the den. "Hang on," he mewed, amusement clear in his voice. "I'll get you out!" Using his forepaws, he dug at the heap of moss, clearing an opening for his clanmate. Moments later, he was standing nose to nose with the she-cat.
"Didn't think that through, huh?" he chuckled, unable to resist teasing. Instantly, regret flashed in his eyes, his belly tightening in embarrassment. You're one to talk, he thought angrily, images of the losing battle he'd instigated crashing down on his mind like a mudslide. Swallowing hard, he tried to recover from his blunder and used his paw to brush off a bit of moss from behind Honeynose's ear, avoiding eye contact.

Honeynose's ears shot up as she heard Vipertail's answering reply. Oh no! Of all the cats to see her being silly, it had to be Herondive's brother... Before the embarrassment could fully set in, however, those feelings were steamrolled by a kind of giddy, girlish excitement over having him come to her rescue. She was hardly in any real danger - thank StarClan - but it was... nice, anyway.
"Thanks!" She chirped, poking her head out of the gap he'd provided, and nearly bumped noses with the black-furred tom. Blinking, startled, she flushed beneath her pelt, momentarily losing her train of thought when he looked her in the eyes. They were so green... Possibly the most vibrant shade of green she'd ever laid eyes on, and given their Clan's territory, that was probably true.
His chuckle broke her concentration, and she uttered a flustered laugh in response. "Nope, I-I guess not!" Relax, Honeynose. Just relax. You've never really been alone with him before... Just play it cool. Could she do that? Stars, probably not. But that wouldn't stop Honeynose from trying. Before another silly comment could jump from her tongue to break the (probably one-sided) awkwardness, Vipertail was reaching for her ear.
Going utterly still out of surprise, her bright, rounded eyes followed the path of his paw as he withdrew with a bit of moss that must've been clinging to her pelt. "T-Thanks," she mewed, shyly smiling at him. Honeynose backed up, hastily groomed down her pelt, and then wriggled through the moss opening to join Vipertail on the outside.
"I have to get all this moss out of here, then bring in fresh bedding." It wasn't the most exciting thing to do, but... Good company made boring things more enjoyable. With hope buzzing in her heart, Honeynose looked at Vipertail. "Do you want to help?"
Please say yes, please say yes. For once, just this once, Honeynose hoped Hazelpaw and Herondive didn't show up right now. It wasn't that she didn't love their company - they were her best friends - and they would undoubtedly lend her a helping paw, it was just that...
Honeynose could count the moments she'd had with Vipertail on one paw.

VipertailStoneClan - 24 Moons - Tom - Warrior Vipertail was grateful Honeynose hadn't seemed to notice his gaffe, or at least was pretending not to. He flicked his ears at her stammered thanks. She's always so shy, he mused, watching as she quickly groomed her pelt, obviously a bit flustered. A deep purr resonated from his chest as she stood, not taking his eyes off of her. Their eyes met as the she-cat piped up, "Want to help?"
"Of course!" he mewed, excited to have another to work beside. "I just finished with the nursery." The black tom went straight to work, pelt brushing Honeynose's as he began to bundle rolls of moss. "Dawnblossom wants the dens cleaned out regularly," he started, adding, "because of the greencough." Vipertail was barely able to suppress a shudder. A foe he couldn't slash at with his claws was one he never wanted to face.
Determined to lighten the mood, he nudged his companion with his shoulder, an impish gleam in his eyes. "Guess that means we'll be spending a lot of time together, eh?" He winked playfully. 176 - Fawn - So tired....

With every bit of eye-contact and every brush of his pelt against hers, Honeynose's heart beat twice as fast, trying to keep up with the burst of butterflies in her belly. He made her so nervous, but so giddy at the same time; she never knew whether to run the opposite direction to get her bearings, or let herself float away into the clouds like she feared she might.
What stifled these girlish thoughts, however, was mention of greencough. Honeynose winced; the leader of their litter, Kitekit, had died of greencough. It had been a terrible, tragic moment in Honeynose's life that to this day, she was unable to forget. Greencough had nearly claimed her life as well - and it left her paranoid beyond measure that she would be tempting fate this time around also.
How many times could she get lucky before the illness claimed her? And what if it took away someone else? Honeynose gazed at the dirty bedding as if it were suddenly coated in snake venom; she forced her voice not to shake as Vipertail jostled her out of her brooding. "Wh-What? Oh! Good thing, too." Honeynose purred, focus snapping back onto the handsome tom winking her way. "I like spending time with you, Vipertail."
Oh Stars, was that too forward? "A-And Herondive too, of course." It was a meek finish, but the best Honeynose could come up with on the spot. It would be good to talk about something else while they worked; she didn't want to spend their time together stressing out over greencough. Worrying for herself and her family and her friends.
The short-coated tabby and white she-cat began to gather up the moss into balls, and added them to the collection Vipertail had already made. The issue with the Sun Stones suddenly felt so far away; Vipertail was easy to like, and easy to follow. Honeynose admired his ability to earn the trust and faith of his Clanmates so easily. No wonder they had gone with him with him to the Sun Stones. And no wonder Herondive and I got caught up in it too...
With a softened, sincere voice, Honeynose purred at Vipertail, unable to stop herself from speaking. "I'm really glad you're okay. After the disaster at the Sun Stones. Fighting those LightningClanners was the scariest thing I've ever done." She was NOT eager to do that again. No way. Hopefully Vipertail wasn't either. She didn't want to disappoint Hawkstar further, or see Vipertail risk his life for a couple of warm rocks.
He was too good a warrior, too kind a tom, to die such a young and pointless death.

VipertailStoneClan - 24 Moons - Tom - Warrior Vipertail peered over to the she-cat beside him, a warm feeling spreading over him. She's like a turtle scared to come out of her shell, he thought, but she's peeking out just a little at a time. Hearing her purr was like finishing an especially good hunt. It felt like a triumph, even as she backtracked, stammering. He blinked amicably at her, turning back to gather up the rest of the moss.
The she-cat's next words made him feel as if he'd just fallen in to icy water. Right. The Sun Stones. I'd been trying to forget. But that was wrong of him. The silence stretched for longer than he'd intended, but he maintained his calm exterior.
"That," he began, trying to keep his voice steady, "was my fault." The dark-furred tom took a breath, unsure of what was to follow. His guilt was staggering, and knowing Honeynose had gotten drug in to his mouse-brained scheme... he moved closer to the she-cat. "We are warriors, and that will not be the last time we face the claws of our enemies." He draped his tail across her as he spoke, lifting his green eyes to meet hers. "But next time, I promise I will be at your side." For once, he was completely sincere, the playful inflections absent from his voice. StarClan, let me lend her courage.

Honeynose gazed at him with surprise, her already large eyes growing larger at his sincerity. But then, heart beating so hard she was afraid he might hear it, even with the mouse-length between them, she smiled, flushing beneath her short tabby-and-white pelt. How easy it was, to believe in him. He had a way of getting others to follow him - or maybe she had always been biased? Always been padding after him?
It didn't matter if he had one loyal admirer or a dozen. This was a good warrior standing in front of her, mistakes and all. In a show of bravery, Honeynose pressed her flank against his in gratitude, the sleek dark pelt of Vipertail's mixing with the clean white fur and tabby stripes of her own. Forgetting, for the moment, that others might see them, Honeynose let herself appreciate this little piece of... of... happiness?
Of feeling like maybe her affection for him could have a chance of being returned. Happiness wasn't the right word to encompass that sensation. No, the right word was... hope.
