there's a light that you give me when I'm in shadow

The Gathering was exactly the same as last full moon's, only a few faces were different. Sprucefur greeted those he knew and gave polite nods to those he didn't; every time he arrived at one, he felt older and older. There was always a new generation of apprentices or young warriors mingling with the crowds.

However, he wasn't just by himself, trying to make small talk and avoid bumping into anyone. Nightpaw was with him tonight, and it was her first real gathering since the first time she'd been made an apprentice. He wasn't going to leave her the embarrassment of trying to socialize with the other, much younger apprentices. Instead, he tried to steer her towards cats her own age.

"If anyone brings up your age," Sprucefur began solemnly. "Feel free to make an excuse. Your business is no one's but your own, you don't have to tell them about Grayowl if you don't want to." Besides, no good would come of mentioning the TreeClan rogue; that kind of gossip would spread through the whole of StarClan's Claws like wildfire in dry grass.

Nightpaw had experienced many things in her life, most of these experiences could be honestly labelled as traumatic. In her own mind Nightpaw had figured she was nearly untouchable, after all how could anything ever be worse than things had been for her in the past? That feeling made the current worry welling inside her completely unwelcome and unfathomable. How could a peaceful gathering of cat's be anything other than an interesting experience to add to her growing pool? That logical thought didn't seem to calm Nightpaw any sadly, it seemed her unique position as an apprentice was the source of her fear. Luckily Nightpaw was with her understanding mentor who gave her advice on just that subject, and she was keen to do just as he said. That said the she-cat wasn't willing to leave her mentors side just then and found herself stuck to her mentor as if with tree sap.

A little withdrawn himself, Sprucefur had to break outside his own comfort zone to keep this experience from being a complete waste of their time and energy. It was supposed to be a social occasion. Spotting a battle-scarred ginger tom loitering near a group of LightningClan cats, Sprucefur recognized him and called him over.
"Greetings, Redscar. LightningClan seems well." Except for Firestar...

The leader of their moorland-loving neighbors was sporting some kind of injury. He could see the piqued curiosity in the eyes of the other cats on the high boulder, but knew better than to bring it up with Redscar. He didn't know the tom very well, and even if he did, he had no interest in collecting Clan gossip. If it was truly important, Firestar would make an announcement about it.

Trying to break the ice, Sprucefur gestured with his tail-tip from Nightpaw to Redscar. "Nightpaw, this is Redscar, LightningClan's deputy. Redscar, this is Nightpaw, my apprentice." And that was all he said. Loyally choosing not to elaborate on Nightpaw's rank or her age, he instead met the other tom's gaze evenly, ready to fend off a question about it or any kind of comment that might make his apprentice more nervous than she already was.

So far, this is fine. With a bit of luck and some caution, it would stay that way.

It was good that Nightpaws' mentor introduced Redscar, Nightpaw felt so far out of the loop that she probably couldn't even name the leadership of any of the clans besides Treeclan. Obviously she wasn't completely at fault for the gaps in her knowledge, returning to her former clan had been difficult for her. Nightpaw wasn't completely without blame however, she obviously hadn't given it her all when she attempted to re-assimilate however. She figured Lionstar had picked up on that fact and it probably played a big part in her rather late attendance of her first gathering. Dipping her head Nightpaw offered a polite greeting to Redscar, who to his credit had figured out much about the she-cat before him. Obviously she was a loner, or perhaps something similar. Nightpaw hadn't approached with a limp or anything else clearly noticeable, this seemed to rule out injury barring her from becoming a warrior. This put the fiery coated tom in a bit of a predicament as he knew Firestar expected him to remain absolutely professional at gatherings, something he also expected from himself, and potentially insulting a Treeclan apprentice could be problematic. "Good to meet you Nightpaw..." Redscar began unsure of what to even discuss that couldn't be brought back to her apprenticeship. "How is the hunting in Treeclan?"

"Hunting is going well," Sprucefur replied evenly. He glanced around the area, wondering if a younger cat would quickly be joining them - but it seemed as if Redscar did not have an apprentice. Or if he did, the 'paw had been made to stay home for this gathering. Rather than fish in the dark for something interesting to say, Sprucefur chose a topic that usually always got an answer out of toms. "Some of those scars don't look that old. Keeping your claws sharp, Redscar?"

It was an easy segue into 'been in any fights recently?' Warriors loved talking about previous battles, whether it was between each other or one of the valley's many predators. Sprucefur didn't care for any of the bragging, and he seldom had stories of his own to share, but Redscar was experienced and tough. Nightpaw might learn a thing or two by listening to the LightningClan deputy's more exciting accounts.
